Editorial review from Citysearch 12/18/2013

This place sells the best steak I have ever tasted in my life. I have been to Ruth's Chris Steak House and Manny's Steak House. The Porterhouse Steak & Seafood restaurant wins first prize for having the best tasting steak. Their prices use to be much lower years ago, so I haven't been able to go to this restaurant much anymore; I remember they use to server an 18 oz. butchers secret sirloin for only $18.95 [I sure miss those days]; And they use to serve their bread toasted with garlic and butter [I wish they would do this again]; Instead of a large steak for a low price it seems they changed to smaller steaks at a higher price; So I don't like that. It's a higher class restaurant great for special occations; They gave my parents and I a free little cake because we went on my Birthday; It was like a white Pepperidge Farm cake without the coconut [Just white frosting]; The cake was cold and delicious; That was a nice surprise giving us that cake free for my Birthday. You can also order to take your food out, but they may ask you to come in, pay, and sit and wait for the food [Perhaps they had some people place orders over the phone and then those people never showed up]; They use to let me order over the phone and come pick the food up when it was ready. Overall I really like this place; but can only afford to go there on special occations. more

too expensive, food not spectacular for the prices! 5/8/2012

I was here for a birthday celebration and wow, expensive!! You wouldn't guess by walking in the door that the prices should be that high? The fish was awful and they were surprised we didn't like it. Really? It was extremely fishy tasting. The steak was good, but I've had just as good a steak at Outback for a fraction of the price. I'd go to a Minneapolis steakhouse if I'm going to pay these prices. Restaurant needs updating too. The wait staff was nice and attentive that was the only plus I can give the restaurant. more

Best Overall Steakhouse-Porterhouse 2/18/2011

Porterhouse is a gem. We eat out at steakhouses 10-2- times a year at the top spots-Ruth's Chris, Mortons, Murry's, Capital Grill...and since a couple of years ago have settled in going to Porterhouse in Little Canada. They charge a lot less and the food is tops. It rocks-try it out. The steaks are great quality-we have never had a bad experience. Well prepared and the service is great. Jason, Leese, Kathy and the rest of the staff work hard to make you happy. Never pretentious. Need something special? Call Jason-he is the best!. Once a car blocked me in by parking 12 inches from my door-no problem; one of the ""thinner staff"" came out in the snow, crawled over the car and went through the window to get my car out. That is just an example of they aim to please. more

Treat yourself to a real dining experience!!! 2/8/2011

This is a wonderful establishment. The food is carefully prepared and made with quality ingredients. The recipes are solid and goo. Not high marks for adventurous cooking just great flavor... great steaks.\r The staff is professional and just the right amount of class and friendly casual.\r The bar is one of the few places in the area where you actually get what you pay for.\r Highly recommend more

good food 1/2/2010

We've never had a bad meal. The staff is well trained.\r The food has always been perfect. The scallops are\r wonderful whatever way they a prepared. The Salmon is alvays good and the Steaks are always done to order. The wait is worth it.\r I'm glad we found you!!!! Pros: great food and service Cons: always a 30 min. wait even with reservations. more

Been there many times, will not return 11/13/2009

I have never been so offended at a restaurant in my entire life.\r I ordered a filet, medium-well. The steak came RARE, I didn't even need to say a thing to the waitress- she noticed and immediately took the steak back. I was not bothered by this, it happens.\r My husband ordered the sea bass and something wasn't quite right with it. He said it was rubbery, not flakey he honestly could not eat it. He told the waitress that something wasn’t right with the fish. He didn’t want to insinuate that it may be possible the fish wasn’t fresh, so he just told her that “something doesn’t seem right with the fish” as politely as possible.\r The manager came to our table and asked “does the water taste okay at least?” How rude. \r I didn’t say a thing about the steak and my husband felt really bad about mentioning that he wasn’t able to eat the fish. I immediately placed my check card at the end of the table. \r I feel justified in writing this negative review because I shared my opinion with the waitress. She was shocked when I told her what the manager said, her exact response was “what?? The steak was rare. I don’t understand- I was the one who said the steak was rare.”\r In the restaurants defense, my steak was good when it came back (fyi: the baked potato was way too salty), the hostess, bartender and waitress were wonderful. The manager should be replaced. He is rude.\r I will not be patronizing this restaurant again and will make sure to let others know why. I actually left the restaurant feeling sad that I had been treated this way. Pros: Good steak. Cons: Poor manager. more

Looking forward to my return visit 8/1/2009

I am looking forward to my second annual Aug (2009) trip to MN when I will make a visit to the Porter House Steak and Seafood establishment. I cannot get walleye in Colorado... so this is my chance to eat up. I was there in 2008 and loved the food, atmosphere and other people at the bar. It was great.... I can't wait. Pros: Walleye Dinner Cons: ? more

The Porterhouse is never a dissapointment!!!!! 2/7/2008

I have eaten at the Porterhouse at least 20 times in the last 4 years and I can't say I have been dissapointed even once. As much as I like steak I am finding myself ordering the ""Shore lunch"" walleye most of the time. It's the best fish on the menu (in my opinion) and has been consistently cooked just right. The service is always 5 star. The wait staff is well trained and even when it's busy (which is most of the time) they are always watching to make sure your needs are met. Pros: Service-Consistency of food quality Cons: If you don't make a reservation you will have to wait. more

A Hidden Gem- Consistency of Excellence 12/26/2007

Hidden in Little Canada, the oldest community in Minnesota, is a tiny gem of a steakhouse that has delighted us every time we have dined there. We have visited the restaurant several times, since the first week it opened. We have been very, very pleased with the food and service every time. The most remarkable thing is the quality of the steaks. I would put them on par with the St. Paul Grill or Lindy's. Each time we have dined there, all of the side dishes were also very nicely done. If one were to imagine what a restaurant steak experience should exactly be- top quality, flavorful meat, seasoned perfectly, done appropriately, and with each side dish exquisitely done, that would be Porterhouse. The particular site of this restaurant, 35E and Little Canada Rd. has seen every restaurant in this building fail since 1971. Porterhouse has been at this location several years, seems to be busy every night, and has a wonderfully solid reputation. In each of our visits we have seen a consistency of excellence, and we have been pleased by the attentiveness of the wait staff. Pros: Excellence Cons: Not where you'd expect to find it. more

Too rare 10/20/2006

Dined there on 10/16/06 and were not impressed. My mother and my wife both got potatoes that were burned. They traded them in for green beans which were ok. My wife's pork chops were pink inside when she ordered them medium. I ordered my steak medium and it was rarer than my father's steak, which he ordered medium rare.\r \r All in all, it's a decent place, but I don't like it when food is not cooked as ordered. Pretty pricy too. more

Awesome 6/9/2005

I had the sirloin and lobster, I never order meat in a restaurant, ususally shrimp or lobster or crab. I loved the steak so much that I enjoyed it more than the lobster and that just blows me away. The food was seasoned just perfectly. I loved the fresh bacon and pepper. The service was wonderful and I met new people in the lounge while waiting to be seated. Also, My son washed his gift certificate I had given him and his wife for Easter and I brought in the shreds and they replaced no questions asked. Customer service at its best... I truly cannot say enough about this restaurant except I wish it were a little bit bigger cause sometimes I have not been able to wait the time it has taken to get seated.... Pros: service, food, location Cons: parking, wait more

Excellent Service 5/19/2005

My husband and I have been dining at the Porterhouse about once a month for the last year. While the food is excellent, what keeps up going back is the service. Everyone is so friendly, knowledgeable and most importantly, approachable. The Porterhouse has quickly become our ""go to"" resturant for all occaisions. I highly reccommend making reservations on the weekends. Pros: Spinach/Artichoke dip, Service, wine list Cons: parking more

No Walleye Pike 3/13/2005

I heard good things about this place and finally went and checked it out on a recent Friday night. I made reservations at 7:30 and out table was ready and waiting which was nice because it was busy. I ordered the pike and got it blackened. It wasn't very good and a little pricey. The other 3 I was with loved what they had ordered. Sea bass, which was a special for the day, and the 10 ounce filet. The artichoke dip was very good. The service was excellent. Pros: Service, Artichoke Dip Cons: Prices, Cajun Walleye more

A Northern Metro Must! 8/18/2004

Excellent food...Excellent service...Excellent location. It was definitely comparable to Murray's or Morton's as far as quality of the steaks and their preparation. And you get more for your money! I had the filet mignon and lobster, and my date had the New York Strip. Both steaks were perfectly prepared, and my lobster had a seasoning on it that made it very tasty! The garlic mashed potatoes and mushrooms (the mushrooms!!!) were also to die for! Thanks to the reviewer that added information about dress. We were dressed down, and didn't feel out of place at all. I thought the atmosphere was great! I would definitely go back again! Pros: steak, service, location more

Supreme steak house 8/3/2004

Porter House was recommended by co worker. Husband & I tried it and were so pleased!! The food was WONDERFULLY prepared. I especially enjoyed my Spinach salad with warm bacon dressing. Both of us had the filet mignon, mine the smallest portion and it was exquisite.....accompanied with the Bernaise sauce. I damn near licked the plate!! Can't wait to go back again. A must for everyone to try! Pros: varied menu, steaks, spinach salad option more

Marvelous 6/11/2004

My wife & I have been to the Porterhouse 6 times in the past 5 months. We have never failed to have a perfect meal. The steaks are outstanding and the fish dishes have always been mouthwatering. The waitstaff is attentive without being in your face and are very knowledgeable about their fare. They have a small but good wine list. We will be back many more times. Pros: Waitstaff, Management, Food & wine more

A wonderful hidden Gem! 4/21/2004

Porterhouse is a suburban gem. Don't judge by viewing the outside of the building or location. It's well appointed. The staff is unbelievable and consistently friendly and helpful. We've been there several times sense it opened - alone - and with friends - and have never been disappointed. Cocktails are expertely prepared and the wine list much better than many standard wine lists. Steaks, Seafood, fish entries are well prepared and consistently tasty. I personally love the crab legs. They are easy to eat because they are partially cracked and I have found them always to be served warm. This is a great spot for a regular dining, special occassions and for business dinners. Pros: consistent, friendly, helpfulstaff, excellant mgmt. more

Excellent value and quality! 7/1/2003

We've been to Porterhouse about 10 times since it opened. The food is always consistent and the service is very good. It's nice because we've taken our 2 year old there a few times and they don't seem to mind. Last week, I had the pork chops wrapped with jalapeno smoked bacon that were incredible. We'll definitely be going back.... more
