Best restaurant in Hamtramck! 1/5/2012

I was born and raised here in Hamtramck. Polish Village is by far the BEST restaurant! From the old times when it was Zusia's, to now. The pork chops, city chicken, and dill pickle soup are awesome. Great atmosphere and workers. If you don't like the pierogi deep fried, just ask for it to be pan fried! Not that hard! When people talk about Polish restaurants or delis in the suburbs, I have to laugh. Hamtramck has the true Polish foods! Don't go to the ""imitation places,"" get the real deal right here in Hamtramck. Keep up the good work Polish Village Cafe!! more

Pretty good 4/7/2010

I work at a polish restuarant in dearborn called jims place and I am constantly hearing about the restuarant in the basement so i decided to give it a try.... it was packed i had pierogies and cabbage soup the soup was ok but i was not a fan of the deep fried pierogie because at my work and through my life ive always had pan fried, also it was a very long wait for our food i almost felt walking out..... they do have a really nice atmophere more like a bar though very loud and tight Pros: nice atmoshpere Cons: long waits more

Always a great time at PVC 1/17/2010

We have been going to Polish Village for 5 years now. What a gem. We are constantly introducing friends to this place because of the charming atmosphere and food which are always consistent. We were there last night and had to wait an hour and a half for a table. Was it worth the wait? Of course the bar is the best part. My husband and I are always meeting new people if it is just the two of us. Last night we were with a group and we had a great time. It does get busy and crowded and yet once you are seated there is absolutely no rush to leave. Carolyn, we always appreciate you and the other staff. Thanks for another great evening. Pros: Food, Drinks, and Atmosphere Cons: Wait time if you are hungry more

BEST EVER 12/23/2009

I have been going to this place for 20 years now and LOVE IT everything is amazing... Pros: great food Cons: location more

One of THE BEST 12/23/2009

Had to try this place because it was voted ""One of the Best"" in Detroit and I would have to agree. Menu had lotsa choices. Food was great. Help was OK. Pros: Great food Cons: Crowded more

bad 11/1/2009

Horrible service and mediocre food. Both Under the Eagle and Polonia are better options. more

bad 10/6/2009

where do i start?......... the waitress was rude, the Polish platter serving is small. one pierogi...... you got to be kidding. the golbaki was appetizer size. i am 6' 4"" and weigh in at 250 - (big pole). the food was bland. please don't think this is a good representation of polish food. on the bright side, the Polish beer was good. Pros: the beer Cons: everything else more

pretty good food BUT the other place is better! 7/26/2009

We came across the border to sample the two polish places. I am a pierogi eating and making expert, and I ordered the peirogi sampler. Priced right, the server was quick and pleasant. My Lady had the mushroom crepe (she didn't want her soup so i ate the borsht). the peirogies were deep-fried . They were tasty but they squirted when I opened them up...too crunchy. The fillings were all good. Lots of sour cream offered. My Lady's crepe was dry but fine. The soup was fresh but too sweet for my taste. Prices are reasonable, food is tasty, and I would come back this place gain.\r The other restaurant is just a walk away. We went there after and shared an order of pan-fried pierogies and potato pancakes. Theirs were definitely better. Both restaurants are as Polish as you are going to get! The Cafe does have ""flacki"" (tripe!) which i can't stand but that is certainly very Polish! \r We went an early Saturday afternoon. Pros: authentic surroundings..quick service Cons: deep-fried pierogies? c'mon now more

Lard City--Fat City 2/9/2009

Everything here is fried in animal lard. From the golbaki, to the stuffed peirogis. Hence, why it tastes sooooo good. It's even put into the soups. Pros: The beer selection. Cons: Too Fat, and bad for you. more

Coockrooach in my menu 1/17/2009

This is not a lie people. We were seated back near the kitchen area, just past the bar. We were sat probably by that rude waitress from the review below, since she had no knowledge of the ""list"" thing. We sat down, and given wet menus. Upon opening my friend found a crushed, dead coockrooach behind the plastic....that is all I have to say. He did not eat...and I stuck with the Zivietz beer. more

Rude Service 7/15/2008

After waiting in line for over an hour, one of the waitresses made a mistake with the list of names for seating. Instead of seating our party of five, she broke up a group of seats and made them into a few smaller tables, then called out 2 names for groups who had been waiting less than 15 minutes. Apparently she grabbed the wrong list of names. When called out on her mistake, she did nothing to rectify the error, not even an apology. Two groups behind us who had been waiting for a long time walked out. When I asked her where we were on the list, she snapped, ""I don't know anything about the list. Whatever."" Needless to say, we took our party of five elsewhere and don't plan on ever going back. Pros: Good food. Cons: Rude, poor service. more

Great Polish Beer and Food.....and VERY reasonable 7/13/2008

My buddy and I went to the Polish Village Cafe last night around 7:45p and it was packed! We decided to walk around a little bit to see if there was something else, but came back to the Polish Village as we figured the food must be really good if there was a line at close to 8pm. Well, we were right, the food was great. I have only had Polish food once before, and don't remember it well, but I order the Hungarian Pankcake. The potato pancake had somewhat of a spicy goulash on top with pork. The pork was very tender and could almost melt in your mouth. I had a couple of the 16oz Polish beers and they really went well with the meal.\r \r The beers were $4 a piece which I thought was really reasonable considering they were 16oz imported beers. The dinners were about $7 a piece and got a pretty good-sized portion. I really can't wait to go back there and am debating about heading down there tonight! Definitely recommend! Pros: Vlaue for the money, great food, cheap Polish beers Cons: wait staff can be a little surly more

Polish Village cafe 6/5/2008

Authentic polish cuisine served in what feels like Babka's basement. Food is delicious. Specialties include the polish plate, city chicken, and cheese pierogies. Entree's are served with soup or salad. Seating is limited- expect a wait during prime dining hours. Wait staff makes you feel rushed. Full bar available. Cash only. Prices are inexpensive. Recommended for the food. more

Worth the trip....great food, great price, great place! 3/16/2008

This place it the best!!!!! My husband is half Polish and I am Irish (don't worry all fellow Irish, my time is St Patty's day). A group of our family, (husbands side) drive 4 hours to Hamtramck just before Easter to get our groceries for our Polish Easter dinner. We go downtown to the meat market for our kielbasa, to make the famous borsch soup, onto the bakery for our rye bread, babka and cookies. Then its lunch time and we head to the Polish Village Cafe. Walking down the stairs into the basement you feel like you are stepping into the old world. The smells of Polish food along with the atmosphere are so relaxing. First off you have to order a Polish beer. You know the old saying when you are in another place, ""when in Poland do as the Polish do'. The server can help you on this one. She recommended a beer starting with the letter Z, I think pronouned Jivitz. However you say it, it was good. It was light in color, not a dark beer. You have to go for the sampler plate with mushroom soup and a side of City Chicken. You will get to taste all the classics in one meal. The cabbage roll is soooooo good, the flavor is savory, compliments everything else, the kraut is the best I have ever had, a little on the sweeter side, the perogie is perfect, the kielbasa is juicey and full of polish flavor. The City Chicken is not chicken, its pork on a stick, something you will not find anywhere else. When you are done you will be soooo satisfied you will want an order to go. The server was friendly, interactive and spoke Polish which made you feel you were somewhere else other than Michigan. As for the price, you get a great home cooked Polish meal for a great price, anyone can afford to go here. That's why its so packed, great food, great price, great place. For an experience in Polish food this is the place to go. Enjoy!!!! more

Love this place 2/13/2008

I love Polish Village Cafe. My family and I go here every year on Good Friday, I wish I could go every friday. In the past, yes we have encountered cranky wait staff, but the key to that is being nice to them and smiling and joking around. They're not so cranky after that. I am polish, my grandmother used to make Polish food all the time when I was growning up. Eating here is like eating my Grandmother's cooking all over again. We've never not have an excellent meal here, it doesn't matter what we order. The atmoshpere is wonderful. The memories we've made here are one's I'll cherish forever and it's wonderful because it's part of my heritage and I'm passing that on to my daughter. If I didn't live an hour away, I'd eat there more than once a year. You just have to put up with a few cranky Polish women... That's not much to ask for a wonderful authentic polish meal. And the wait is worth the experience and the food. Pros: Food, atmosphere, experience Cons: waitstaff can be cranky, but they are busy. Wait can be long but it's well worth it. more

Simply the best 1/31/2008

I have been here numerous times and the food is sensational! I just wish I could get the recipe for the sausage soup! Pros: everything Cons: nothing more

Disgusting 11/26/2007

Disappointing. One word--nasty. The food was gross...waitress was rude and stupid. Don't go. Waste of money even though it's cheap. Better off at McDonald's. Pros: Parking Cons: Everything more

It's well worth the Wait! 11/19/2007

I would wait 2 hours to eat this food. As you can see, so do many. It's a very busy and crowded restaurant, not to mention smaller, so of course there will be a wait. Crowded restaurants = Good restaurants. Also, why would you leave a tip if you did not eat? Can't wait til they open the new building for expanded seating, should seat at least 100. Pros: Great, real polish food Cons: Small more

Be prepared to wait and wait and wait and wait... 11/17/2007

This place was recommended by people in the Polish community of Detroit. We drove 45 minutes in heavy Detroit traffic to find it. Located a parking place on the street and were promptly seated. Then we waited and waited and waited and waited and waited.... Finally my wife stopped the waitress and asked politely, ""Could you please take our order?"" And we waited and waited and waited and waited and waited and waited and waited.... Meanwhile the ""waitress"" was standing on the other side of the dining room walking with another waitress... Double wait time.... After 15 minutes of not being served, we got up and left. Now we know what the ""wait"" in ""waitress"" stands for. We would not go back and would not recommend it after all the trouble and time we went to find the place. TIPS is an acronym which stands for "" To Insure Prompt Service."" We did not leave a tip. We got home and I decided to call to speak with the manager and give them some feedback that might improve their service. The phone rang and rang and rang and rang and rang and rang and rang... Tonight we are having hot dogs on the grill. At least we won't have to wait for them in order to eat... Pros: Promptly seated... Cons: blond waitress more

Great Polish Food-Authentic 11/6/2007

Sorry, your grand mother must of never had real Polish food or isn't from Poland. I have 3 grand parents, and 2 uncles who lived in Poland for 30+ years and they say Polish Village is very Polish. They enjoy all the Polish restaurants in Hamtramck too. They don't have a favorite but they say all are very authentic Polish. more
