I left Piece with a cloying aftertaste in my mouth. I'm not quite sure if it was disappointment or the flavor of luke-warm canned mushrooms. Whether thin crust is New Haven style...

Windy City Pizza Club at Piece 12/13/2010

I went to Piece on a Sunday night for a 7pm reservation with the Windy City Pizza Club. Originally, we had a group of 22 booked to come; however because of the weather conditions, we had 12. I spoke with a manager a few weeks prior to the reservation and I said that we would like to be at a connected table to make it easier to talk, but the day of they moved us to ?The Pit?. ?The Pit? is down some stairs at Piece, where there are a bunch of small circle tables and booth style couches. It wasn?t exactly what we needed but we made it work by taking several of the small tables and putting them right up against each other to make a long table, still not convenient, but fun nonetheless. I had fun where we sat as there was a big screen TV and pinball machine, and of course it was more private, but it could use a massive update with its design and Piece d?cor. Our waitress was great. I don?t expect anything more from a University of Denver alumnus, which she was because she did a fantastic job with our requests, food prep, and check. The service was sometimes a little bit slow but I understood with the weather being so poor that they didn?t bring in as many servers. It was also a Sunday night and there were a couple other groups in the Venue. The Pizza. I won?t yet say that it was my favorite, however it is definitely way up in the Top 5 places I have ever been to. I had the red medium half spinach, half artichoke hearts. It was nice to have an inexpensive pizza that had premium toppings. The waitress told us that we had ordered too much for 12 people, as we ordered about 10 different types of Mediums, but in the end, everything was gone. A medium is the right size for 2 people, however there are 12 slices per medium so depends on how big each of your appetites are. The Beer. I had a great microbrew IPA called ?Cap?n Kickass? (7.5%). It sort of tastes like Gumball Head, but with less fruitiness and I would recommend it to people that like Pale Ales because it has a good kick to the aftertaste. Overall, I would go back to Piece but not in a group. I really want to try their chocolate pizza and more of their beer selection. Windy City Pizza Club very much enjoyed the venue and it?s time at Piece. more

It was pretty average - I had the individual. The toppings were fresher than Pizza Hut I guess Cons: Overrated more

Fabulous thin crust, great beer 11/2/2009

After living in Bucktown for only 6 weeks, I've already frequented Piece 4 times! The pizza is addicting and Piece brews its own beer, making it extra delicious. I'd rather go their during the week when the place is less crowded, and the service is better. Also, check out the $25 large pie and growler special for Take Out on Sundays! Pros: White thin crust pizza Cons: Long wait for table on Saturdays more

Amazing Food, Beer and Service Every Time! 8/1/2009

I just LOVE this place! Its amazing every time! Gum ball beer is so yummy! Salad and pizza are even better! Service is great! One time our waitress forgot something on our pizza and gave us %20 off! I recommend this place to anyone in Chicago! Its like no other! Pros: Prices! Cons: there can be a wait some times more

Great Pizza and Beer! 3/13/2009

Huge portions, fresh ingredients, and awesome beer. It can get crowded on the weekends, but that is understandable. I would recommend going on a weeknight or if you go on the weekend, give yourself plenty of time to hang out at the bar and try a few beers while you wait for a table. The staff was friendly and attentive, and even though you could tell our server was very busy, she made time to stop and chat/give us a couple suggestions. I will definitely be back! Pros: LOVE their thin crust more

very good pizza, bad service 1/18/2009

We'd never tried New Haven-style pizza before, and we weren't disappointed with the quality. A small red with clams and spinach was more than enough for two. Now, I am not a picky person when it comes to service. When the hostess told us it would be a 25 minute wait when it was closer to an hour, I understood that it was Championship Sunday. However, the hostess inexplicably called two groups who were further down the list (each with 2-3 people who didn't have reservations--same as our group) before us. This happened although we were standing no more than three feet away from the hostess the entire wait. After we were skipped over the second time I approached the hostess, who asked ""have you been helped yet?"" I noticed the wait list and that every group called before us (and after us) was clearly blacked out, so there was little chance the hostess simply made a mistake. When I pointed out that we were actually next, she made no apology. After being seated about 15 minutes later, the waiter was very pleasant, and we eventually got our pizza. Again, the pizza was very good: the red sauce is not overwhelming; the clams/spinach combo worked well and the thin crust was perfect. However, the hostess' random sub-mediocrity just about ruined an otherwise good pizza experience. I understand that hostesses get busy, but really, they only have one job: call the next name, count the menus and guide customers to a specific table. At least one Piece hostess cannot perform that job. Pros: crust, variety of toppings, unique New Haven style Cons: Hostess may arbitrarily skip you more

Piece It Together 6/29/2008

A slightly edgy restaurant that offers a piece of many things: pizza, a local bar, micro-brews, sports, art and entertainment. Try ordering two small pizzas -- a staple you know you'll like and something daring. Everytime I've done this in a group, most people have preferred the unique creation. The choices of crusts and toppings create an everlasting set of options. Likewise, the bar itself seems like an almost different place at different times. In the afternoon, it's just a local pizza place with a bar to one side. During sporting events, it's packed with fans who can see TVs thoughout half the large open main room. On a Friday or Saturday, it's a 20 to 30-something hang-out for people who refuse to completely become part of the establishment. In short, it's a fantastic place with great pizza and wonderful selection of brews. Try it! Pros: Great, unique pizza; good selection of microbrews, great atmosphere Cons: Long waits during peak weekend hours more

Great east coast stle pizza 5/16/2008

This is my favorite place to go in Chicago for East Coast style pizza. The selection of Microbrewed beer is great too. Try the Worrying Ale if they have it on tap. Pros: Great pizza if you like thin crust. Great Microbrews. Cons: Microbrews on the pricey side. more

2nd best pizza in the city - You can't beat the beer! 7/14/2007

Without being said, there's a lot of pizza to choose from in Chicago. Piece is excellent and a much needed change from your traditional Chicago thin crust and deep dish. It only ranks behind Renaldi's on Broadway. The beer is amazing, I've never had a bad appetizer, and there are tv's everywhere. Unlike finallife2004's experience, I always get a the feeling that the staff rather be anywhere else besides Piece. Regardless, so long as there's good food, beer, and entertainment I couldn't care about a few slightly disgruntled workers. more

Best Beer and alright Pizza 6/15/2007

Th bar at Piece is a great place to get drunk and watch any game that is one, especially during any big games. The pizza has a very crunchy crust and a lot of flour or that white power on the bottom and top of crust. The workers are amazingly nice and always seem to have a smile on their face no matter how busy it gets. Pros: Beer and Pizza Cons: Parking more

Great Homemade Beer, Good Pizza...Somewhat bad service though 6/4/2007

The first time I heard of this place was on one of Rachael Ray's Food Network shows. She was interviewing part owner of the place, Cheap Trick's very own Rick Nielsen, and filmed the the majority of the show inside the place with a live audience. Anyway, I decided to try this place out sometime back in the Fall of 2006. Now, the first time was an awesome time. The pizza was great and their award winning home brews were the best beers that I've ever tasted. The 2nd & 3rd time there weren't so great., the 3rd visit being recent (6/2/07). Basically, it's live band Karaokee night on Saturdays (no, sorry you're not singing with Cheap Trick) and it's a free-for-all for tables. The staff just shuts down on you and don't even bother saying that the kitchen service is closed after waiting 20 minutes (which is around midnight-ish). Parking is a disaster on weekends (or on any day come to think of it) too. I'm not sure what else to say about this place. I like the pizza, nice thin crust, but it's no Lou Malnatti's. The beer is top notch and should be distributed like Goose Island does with theirs. And their ""Chololate Pizza"" which was also featured on Rachael Ray's show is really something to try...that is if you still can stomach a whole other pizza =). Bottom line, take the Blue Line to Damen and come here and ""pregame"" (come here before going out for the night). Come for the beer, stay for the pizza and (on Saturdays) the obnoxious crowds singing with the live karaokee band. Pros: Live band karaokee, BEST home brewed beer, good pizza Cons: PARKING, Overrated, overcrowded, declining service, bad singers that come sing on Saturdays =) more

Good beers and thin crust pizza 11/14/2006

Not your typical deep dish Chicago place...Piece is about New Haven style pizza which is thin and red sauce is an option. Pizza was good. Service was casual and friendly. Great beers (they brew themselves). I would recommend for a casual pizza and beer place or to catch a game. Pros: Great home brewed beers and pizza more
