Paul Medawar Fine Jewelry is by far the highlight of Grand Rapids. Similar to the reviewer below, I had very poor experiences with Jared. They overcharged me for simple services (even with my purchased warranty), and I was just another number. They just wanted me in and out. \r Quite a contrast to the service I received at Paul Medawar Fine Jewelry! I was genuinely welcomed in the store. Dan and Dave were especially helpful, and even took the time to teach me about the differences in the pieces I was considering. I continue to have only the best things to say about this store. more

The finest jewelry store in Grand Rapids. I originally went there to sell old gold and they paid me top dollar. I recently brought a very nice ring in to have resized and have stones reset. The workmanship is beautiful and the repairs were done in a timely manner. While in the store I feel in love with a beautiful pair of ruby earrings. Unlike the ""mall jewelers"" the stones at Medawar's are 100% natural. I have gotten numerous compliments on my new earrings. The quality shows. Don't waste your time on junk jewelry found at the mall stores. You get what you pay for. more

AMAZING!!! I recently inherited a Rolex watch from my grandfather. The watch needed some meticulous work done on it in order for it to work smoothly again. I brought my watch to Paul Medawar Fine Jewelry and I could not have been happier with the service and respect I was given. Not only are they a licensed Rolex dealer and repair store, they have an amazing selection of other fine jewelry. I was greeted warmly as I entered the store and a very professional young man helped me with my watch. The customer service I received was exceptional and my watch is now in great working order. I decided that since I am having a major birthday this year that I was going to buy myself something I have wanted for many years - an emerald bracelet. I went to the 5 stores in one of the malls and left disappointed. About a week later I passed Medawar's on Plainfield on my way home. I decided to stop in to see what they had. I walked in and within seconds was greeted by Dan Medawar. I saw 5 bracelets in the emerald showcase and fell in love with one of them. I took some time to think about the purchase then went back to buy it. Paul Medawar and his other son helped me then. I needed an extension but it wasn't possible to match the design of the bracelet and so Paul showed me another option - two gold closures that would give me the fit I needed. I also had decided to purchase a pair of emerald and diamond earrings. I asked if it was possible to remove the post and put them on wires. Yes it was! I received a call a few days later to let me know the items were ready. I walked in and Paul waited on me. He said he wanted to do something special for me and the bracelet extension was not the closures. It is made of gold links and diamonds! He did this at no extra charge to me. The earrings were great too!! Mr.Medawar and his sons have been so great to work with!! Several people who have seen the bracelet say it is beautiful but when they see the extension they say it is exqusite!! I was coming home the day before Christmas and I had no idea what she would like so I called the store and a gentlemen actually found something for me and I was able to come in at closing time to pick it up. Very honest and generous. Spent significant time explaining the issues with two table clocks I brought in. Couldn't repair the antique table clock except for a very steep price, not worth repairing. Another table clock I have worked except the chime was stuck and wasn't chiming. He fixed this without charge as he knew how much I loved the clock chimes. Furthermore, his son added a bracket to a bracelet watch, replacing the pin for no charge. Very sincere and honest. Wouldn't hesitate to return there in the future. Pros: null Cons: null more

I'm surprised to see a negative review, as my experience has been nothing but positive. Paul Medawar and his sons are knowledgeable and friendly, and I recommend them across the board for their sales, selection, and service. I have never been disappointed. I once took a mechanical watch in to have the timing regulated; the store was not very busy just then, so Paul invited me back into the shop to observe as he did the service. Very interesting opportunity to see what's inside the watch, to get a tutorial on how it functions, and to see a craftsman at work. Most recently, I took an Omega mechanical in for timing, and David did the work. It's now running with quartz accuracy. Oh, and they didn't charge me -- did that service as a friendly gesture, even though it normally runs about $150. Again, compliments to Paul and his sons. Highly recommended. I have been in to this location a few times. Once to get a ring sized and a prong fixed. They did good work but kept adding another $10.00 to the price. I have a diamond ring I had them take a look at to see if they would buy it and how much they would pay. He started out telling me what a nice diamond I had and gave me a decent price for it. After thinking about it for a day I decided I would take him up on it and went back in to make the deal. When I arrived, the same sales people were in the store. Paul took the ring from the salesman and took it into the back room. He came back out and tried to tell me it was a different ring. He asked if anyone else had access to the ring and that it had chips in it and it was an i,J clearity. Mine had no chips and was a SI1 clearity. There was no way anyone else coule have touched it. I never took it out of my purse. He offered me $200.00 less for the diamond because "he could not sell this to his customers". I declined his offer and drove to another jeweler. I asked them to check for cracks and see what the clearity was.........You guessed it SI1 and there was not a crack or chip in it. This is something he does on a regular basis people. He is not to be trusted! everyone that I have spoken to has had a story about him. I will never go back in his store again and suggest you don't waste your time going there either. I have done business with them over the last several years and have found everyone in the store to be helpful and polite. I have had watches serviced there, jewelry cleaned, and custom rings made. Each time I enter the store, I am greeted and welcomed by name (the advantage of doing a regular business with them). The estimates for repair have been right on and the prices for custom work have been both fair and upfront - no surprises on the back end. This is to advise people. A few years ago one of their sales associates told me the new white gold won't turn yellow, so I had my ring redone in white gold. 2 years later it started to turn, so I had to take it in to have it rhodium plated. So, that wasn't true was it? Second, the misled me on appraising my rings. I was charged $200 EACH ring, for an APPROXIMATE appraisal!! I thought for that kind of money it would be exact, where they have to take the diamond out of the mounting. I went in and questioned them on it later. I sold one of the rings to another jeweler in town who took one look at it and told me it was .75ct not .81. I was furious with Medawar's. Oh, and I also sold him several thousands of dollars of gold and I think they overcharged me for the appraisals due to simple greed. I will never take my business there again. And, he does do the stare at people like others have mentioned. Strange. more

After seeing all of the ?we buy gold? stores and commercials I decided to take a look through my jewelry box to see if I had anything I was willing to part with. I had a couple necklaces and an old ring that I thought I?d take it around to see what I could get for all of it. I shopped around to all the gold shops and jewelry stores around Grand Rapids and even though everyone claims to ?pay more? for gold, Paul Medawar?s really did pay more! Not only did they offer me the best price but they also explained how the gold process works. It was nice to talk to someone who knew what they were talking about and actually took a couple minutes to explain things to me. I will definitely be back and hopefully to buy some jewelry instead of selling it! more

I just bought my fiance's ring and Paul helped me. I have been helped by their other staff members who have been very helpful as well in a "no pressure" environment. After looking at other very good jewelry stores in town and Minneapolis where I live, their selection was better. Their selection is more sophisticated and updated. Really worth going in! more

It has come to my "attention" that certain members who own Jewelry Stores are purposely fabricating false meetings and circumstances. Shame on you! Just as a point I made an appointment to see the the showroom, went in dressed "very casually" and was treated rather pleasantly even though I didnt actually intend to purchase anything (which I was upfront about as well). I purchased a platinum ring & had my diamond set into a new setting in July 2006. After wearing 3 mths the platinum scratched horribly especially for the thousands of $$ I paid for it. I asked Paul Medawar if I could look into resetting the ring into something else. He started yelling & screaming at me in front of other customers saying that I picked this ring, it was my choice, etc. I totally agree with that. I again asked him for his professional advice on what we could agree on together to compromise on a solution. He went ballistic & was very unprofessional. I have never been treated so rudely. He bullied me right out of the store. He is a very unkind, rude, condescending, vicious & dishonorable man. more
