Mary Coakley has been my psychiatric nurse practitioner for many years now. I have found her to be a caring and compassionate person, and completely professional. I had many problems adjusting to medications, and Mary always listened to my problems with empathy, and addressed my concerns. She always made herself available to me when I needed to consult her or during times I was in crisis. She always discussed treatment and drug options with me and was very aware of my fears and concerns. Through trial and error we eventually found the right medications to treat my particular illness. Her goal was to work with me toward good mental health and she never let me down. I continue to see Mary as my psycho-therapist. I am completely satisfied and feel confident in recommending Mary Coakley to others in need of psychiatric treatment. more

I have nothing but positive things to say about my experiences at N.W.P. I see Dr. Robert Beaton for individual counseling and he is wonderful. He is very attentive, caring, and insightful. He listens and addresses my cares and concerns while offering real help that I can carry with me and use in my day to day life. I also see Dr. Blake Smith for medication. There again you will not find a more concerned, empathic and knowledgeable doctor. He found a combination of medications that has given me relief from the depression and anxiety I've been dealing with for over 20 years. Please don't let one clinician's reviews make you hesitant to seek help there. I will always be thankful for finding these two terrific doctors. more

I just came across the ""tips"" people wrote about Newton Wellesley Psychiatry. Aside from the fact that anyone asking a psychiatrist for a note to be able to skip work as needed for anxiety needs to get a grip, I can honestly say that I have had nothing but excellent care at this practice. Dr. Blake Smith is very knowledgeable and empathic and pulled me out of a devastating depression. I will always be grateful to him. more

I am truly surprised by the negative comments about this practice! I and my family have been using them for many years, and we have had experience with Drs. Leonard Freedberg and Rachela Elias, as well as with Susan Luckman, both LICSW's. We have been very impressed by their compassion, expertise, and professionalism. One would think that Mary Coakley was the only provider here, and she is only 1 of many, many fine practitioners in this practice!! Too bad there are always some sour grapes... more

Mary Coakley- worst MH specialist I've ever seen 4/2/2012

Had a long-winded post that Citysearch told me was too many characters long. Head over to Yelp if you want to hear about my horrendous experience in its entirety. In short, I wish I had read some of these reviews before I kept my appointment with Newton Wellesley Psych, where I had been referred by my PCP for anxiety. Mary Coakley was ignorant, condescending, flippant, and made me extremely self-conscious/uncomfortable for the duration of my visit. She ignored or belittled concerns that I brought up, especially regarding prescribing me daily medication (she said it was necessary for anxiety treatment) and a note I requested for an ""as-needed"" leave of absence from work (not necessary, as the Lexapro she prescribed would eliminate all traces of anxiety). I am seeking a second-opinion, and will not be returning to Newton Wellesley Psych. more

200.00 purely mechanical service 10/19/2011

The description of the group does not match what is provided. For 200.00, you receive a purely mechanical approach. You will receive a prescription if needed that your primary care can do for you. There is no interest in providing follow-up so do not be fooled by beepers and 24 coverage. The person I saw could have been a robot. Sensitivity, interest in their work, and trying to make your paid time meaningful are non existent at this practice. It was quite disappointing. more

Mary Coakley 9/4/2010

I completely agree with the other reviewer- I had a horrible experience with Mary Coakley. She's belittling, egotistical, lacks compassion, and is clearly in the wrong profession. She is the last person I would trust with my, or anyone else's emotional health for that matter. She has no understanding of the often dangerous drugs she disperses like candy, and it's a mystery to me how she sleeps well at night. Of Paxil and it's dangerous withdrawal symptoms, she stated ""I have no understanding of that"", of Lamictal inducing mania and racing thoughts, as well as a stimulating effect, ""I don't believe it's the drug that causes this, you don't know what you're talking about"". I could go on, and in each circumstance there is literature online to back up each of the instances of which she had little to no understanding. She has no idea what she's doing, and it's a scary thought that she is aloud to treat people with her methods... more

With minor exceptions, excellent counseling. 5/17/2008

I was pleased with the majority of the psychiatric staff at this clinic, and especially with Dr. David Golden whom I saw for counseling, as he was easy to talk to and knowledgeable in his subject matter. I was, however, very disappointed with my experience with Dr. Mary Coakley, as, not only did she trivialize my problems during counseling sessions, but seemed distant and uncooperative. In general, I found her to be unprofessional, and her insensitivity resulted in the ultimate termination of my visits. Other than this unpleasant incidence, I would recommend this clinic for its relaxing environment, central location, and accessible staff. Pros: Easy parking situation, relaxing interior, helpful staff. Cons: A less-than-friendly receptionist and general environment, but welcoming in other aspects. more
