Food was great and the out seating with the band made for a very fun night. Will definitely go back. more

bad food and service 12/28/2011

We've tried Mt. Fuji 3 times this past year to give them a chance and were disappointed each time. Service was bad, food presentation and flavor - terrible. Sushi was just mediocre. Ordered a pasta dish that we were told was a ""customer favorite""; it looked like slop and tasted horrible - it was inedible and sent it back. We won't be returning until things improve. We really want to support the Brightleaf restaurants but this place needs new staff and chef. more

disrespectful 4/9/2011

I have been to Mt Fuji before and I like their pad thai so we made a reservation to dine once more on a Saturday evening. We ate our meal and our waiter was average and I have no complaints there. Literally 5 minutes after we signed the bill (with a 20% tip as usual), the hostess came over to our table and said, ""I am sorry but we have another reservation that is waiting for this table, so could you please..."" more

Satisfied in the end 2/17/2011

My wife and I have been to Mt Fuji for several occasions. We have always had the sushi, have never ordered from from the dinner menu. Tonight was Thursday, the usual 50% off sushi rolls night. The food has always been stellar. Fresh, tasty and the presentation is delightful. Tonight my displeasure is with the service. Arriving at six, we were seated promptly and drinks were served without delay. We placed our sushi order and the wait was minimal. As expected there was no issue with the food. Halfway through our meal, a worker(later determined to be the manager) stopped next to our table, flipped out a stepladder with a loud SNAP and proceeded to adjust the light directly above our table, after a glare of displeasure, he mumbled sorry. We never saw the server again until our meal was nearly completed and the bill was delivered. Upon inspection, we were charged full price for the two most expensive rolls and the the two lower priced rolls were marked ""Free"". When I pointed out the menu indicated that Thursday nights after 5pm sushi rolls were half off, the server stated that the new menus have not arrived and the half off special is no longer available. I also pointed out that I had been overcharged for one of the rolls. The server stated the Manager would come help us, but a new bill was delivered instead with the price of the overcharged roll corrected. When I said I wasn't satisfied, then the Manager was called and agreed to adjust our bill to the advertised half off. The food was great but the hassle of having to deal with the advertised prices and unacceptable service was unpalatable. more

Some of the best Sushi- Slow Service 10/9/2009

This is some of the best sushi in Durham especially when it is half price! I have had a couple of the dishes off the menu and they have been great. Always the same consistency unlike PF Changs. Pros: Better than PF Chang's Cons: Understaffed more

Bad sushi 5/28/2009

Haven't been so disappointed in sushi as I have by Mt. Fuji. For $13, I only received 4-5 rolls of spicy tuna roll when one should get at least 8 rolls of a special roll (at least in every other sushi place I have been). Secondly, the tuna was chunky tuna, such as one would find in a can, not rare tuna pieces. Complete rip-off (and still hungry!). Even though I am not local (was driving through) I would not recommend this place. more

Best sushi in durham 3/17/2009

Great sushi and very fresh. Nice decor and always fun on half price thursday. They also have many other asian dishes for those who do not like sushi. Pros: Nice Saki selection Cons: can take some time when busy more

Good food, just avoid Thursday night 7/15/2008

We go to Mt. Fuji on a regular basis and have always had good service and good sushi. Never tried the other dishes because they don't look too interesting, but the sushi is really good and so is the garlic calamari. Just a tip, avoid half price sushi night on Thursdays, the place gets packed with drunk Duke kids that create a seriously unpleasant atmosphere. Otherwise, I highly recommend it. Pros: great sushi Cons: duke brats on thursday night more

First and last dinner at Mt Fuji 5/17/2008

First time I have left almost a full meal on the table in ten years; and not ask for the rest to be wrapped up. Food was amateur, poor. The taste was quite memorable; but not in a good way. Service was slow and poor...almost comical. There are other similar restaurants in the area with similar menus that are wonderful. They need to step it up or they probably will not be around long. I should have gave the $70 spent to charity or some other worthy cause. Always a great disapointment when you walk away from a restaurant regretting the money you spent. I usually will give a restaurant a second and sometime even a third chance; but I will not be back. In my opinion the food was that bad. Sorry; but in my opinion, I definately do not recommend this restaurant. Pros: Leaving the restaurant to hear the great Friday music and atomosphere outside in Brightleaf Square Cons: Food,Service, more

Very disappointing, as usual 5/13/2008

I have been to Mt. Fuji on several occasions now. The food is okay. No better or worse than P.F. Changs. The problem is the service and atmosphere. Each time, the service has been terrible. Last night's meal was the last straw. There was one table of drunk undergrads who were screaming and pounding on their table for hours. They were clearly disturbing everyone in the restaurant, but no one did anything. There was no way anyone could have a pleasant conversation during their meal. It was overwhelming. When we talked to the wait staff, they didn't care and made excuses for the undergrads, likely because of the large tip they were anticipating. Then we talked to the owner who was drinking at the bar the whole time. He said that he didn't do anything because he was ""off duty""! Are you kidding me!?!? He is the OWNER! He couldn't have been more indifferent about our terrible experience. I've never experienced anything like that -- an owner who did not care about return business. Cons: The whole dining experience more

Acceptable sushi 11/6/2007

Depending on the night (I recommend Tuesdays and would stay away on Mondays) this is actually pretty good sushi. Pros: fish can be very fresh, presentation always good Cons: bad service more

Bad food 10/10/2007

The food on our table was not cooked proper at all. My dish smelled like raw egg :( Cons: Thumbs down more

Good food in a cool atmosphere 8/27/2007

I've gone several times to dinner to this place. It would take awhile to get seated and then get the food. But I went for a business lunch and there were few people there. We got the food quickly and it was delicious. I recommend this place with one reservation: the prices are not the cheapest. Entrees are a dollar or two more than similar places. Pros: Tasty food Cons: Prices are a little too high more

Great Food & Great Atmosphere! 7/16/2007

Located in downtown Durham in the Brightleaf section I have to admit that the sushi is great. It does not have a fishy smell or a fishy taste. The atmosphere is relaxed and the service is relatively great especially if you happen to get the waiter name Dan. He has tons of personality and charisma which can make your dining experience a joy. Get there early before it gets crowded or you will have a long wait for your food. If you are planning to come for lunch try to get there between 11:00AM and 11:30AM. That way you will be promptly seated or you can pick your seat. You may even want to sit outside if the day is not too warm. Make sure that you try the seaweed salad. It is to die for. Be exotic and go for a dish that you would ordinarily not order. For it is better to try than to not have tried at all. Pros: Great Food! Cons: Can be very crowded and service can be slow if you get there later than earlier. more

Great Sushi, Avoid Thursdays, Friendly Staff 4/15/2007

Delicious Asian fusion food and sushi, the curries are all soo yummy and it has the only good pad thai in the triangle. Prompt seating usually, unless its the weekend-- call ahead to give your name. Drinks are also great-- the bartender was extra friendly and able to match my food with an equally wonderful cocktail. Its also vegetarian friendly; theyll make any dish with tofu instead of meat. Its kind of pricey, but worth it! Call ahead and reserve if you have a big group or want to sit in the seperate room with straw mats. Pros: Good mix of foods and nice cocktails Cons: Can be crowded/long wait more

Mount Fuji 2/27/2007

I went to this place with some co-workers and I thought it was a great Sushi restaurant. They serve big portions and everything was well-presented. I had one of the sampler platters, and everything was great. It's also a great atmosphere. We sat at a table, but they also have a neat sushi bar that looks like it would be fun. Pros: Sushi Cons: parking is difficult more

Cooking Needs Revamping!! 7/20/2006

We have visited this restaurant three times. On two of those occasions, my husband requested medium rare beef .... both times, the cook sent WELL DONE beef! On the last visit, I had chicken terriyaki and it was so overcooked, it was rubbery!! Good sushi but the food is lacking and the service is bad, even when there are few clients. We will NEVER recommend this restaurant to anyone! Pros: good sushi Cons: food overcooked more

Finally, a restaurant to love! 6/9/2006

I traveled extensively throughout Asia and fell in love with the unique and healthy cuisine offered by China, Japan, and Thailand. Pros: Authentic Cuisine, Warm Servers, Great Food more

Good Food But Service Needs Improvement 5/3/2006

I love the food and have been impressed with every dish I've tried. Often contemporary Asian fusion places fail to create dishes with complex taste and character, but Mt. Fuji succeeds where other places fail. The ambience is enjoyable--a little dark, but I love the exposed brick walls and decor. The special room in back is also great for a larger dinner party. My biggest suggestion to this restaurant would be to work on improving the service. The servers have generally been nice but in one case in particular I was less than impressed with my service and felt extremely undervalued as a customer who is paying good money to eat there. Nonetheless, I would still recommend this restaurant hands down. Pros: Taste and Variety, Ambience Cons: Service more

I can't wait to go back! 4/30/2006

Im so glad that theres a sushi restaurant in Durham now. The food is great and the Makis are very creative and beautifully presented. The atmosphere is very romantic perfect for taking a date. more
