After reading some of the negative reviews...I felt like I should post my recent experience at Monk's. I felt the service was very professional. Both bartenders were pleasant ...

Worst

Great beer selection and cozy ambience if it's not too crowded. Service can be slow and sometimes rude regardless of how busy they are. The food is good (especially the fries), ...

Beer, beer, and more beer 7/11/2007

If the crowd is any indication, this is the place to be. The place is really crowded after work as people flock here to relax and unwind. There is no reservation so definitely come early to get a table. The policy is that they will only seat you once your WHOLE party is there just so you can plan accordingly. This could be a hassle for some but it is well worth it. If you are here, you will definitely need to try their mussels. Somehow, every single mussels are huge and succulent. My mouth waters just thinking about it. Monk is definitely known for their beer. It has an impressive and unrivaled collection of beer from everywhere in the world. The Bible is something to be hold. Come often and try out all of their beers if you can. Pros: Huge beer selection, mussels Cons: Crowded more

Best mussels in Philly and the burgers and fries are really good as well 6/14/2007

It can take awhile to get a table (especially on a weekend) and the service isn't always the most prompt (because they are usually packed), but don't let that scare you from experiencing the wonderful mussels, burgers, fries and especially beer at Monk's. more

Avoid Monk's if you are looking for good service 4/10/2007

While Monk's has one of the best veggie burgers I've ever tasted, the restaurant and bar are always overly packed and servers will frequently leave customers unattended for 30 to 60 minutes at a time. Consider ordering 2 drinks up front because many servers here will bring your food and not get you another drink thus leaving you with food and no beverage. Pros: Food Cons: Service, management more

Brilliant beers dimmed by disgruntled servers 4/2/2007

Monk's is appropriately famous for its dizzying beer selection, mulitple mussel choices and hot fries served with addictive dipping mayonnaise. However. Our server seemed overwhelmed with her workload. Water glasses went dry, requests were ignored, and food arrived half-hot, half-warmish and rubbery. The inconsistency of service here is starting to annoy me. The draft Delirium Tremens keeps me wearing a path straight to the bar, past this bitchy server and her helpless, waiting tables. Pros: unusual beers, good food prices, serves dinner late night Cons: service is a roll of the dice -nice and knowledgeable, or evil incarnate more

HORRIBLE! 3/17/2007

I went to Monk's the other night and was greeted by hostile hosts, servers, & bartenders. I don't know how they remain so crowded when their staff is so rude and there are plenty of other blegian themed places to eat at in philly! The food took forever and was served warm, the mussells were rubbery, the sauces were bland. the server basically threw the check at our table. Pros: beer selection Cons: rude staff, high prices, long wait more

Greatest selection of beers, decent food and service. Crowded though. 12/16/2006

We went mainly to try the beers. Boy, what a selection. If you are a Bud Light kind of guy, go someplace else. If you want to try some really nice beers, this is the place. The fries (or wedges i think they call them) were really good too. The rest of the food we had was actually rather nice as well. The only thing is that the place really fills up - we showed up at 6:30 and got the last table. By the time we left at 8:00, there was a crowd of people up front waiting to get in. Pros: Beer, food Cons: Crowded more

Beer and Vegan! 11/19/2006

I'd recommend going on a slow night when you're not starving, but worth the wait. Great beer list, and tasty food. I'm also always impressed when I can find a great beer place that actually caters to vegetarians and vegans. Pros: Food, Beer, Vegan Burger Cons: Busy Busy more

Beer lovers rejoice 11/1/2006

The owner does a great job keeping the selection vast. The 'beer bible' includes some of the best beers from all of the world, not just belgium. To top it all off the food is good and the muscles are great. For those of you who aren't die hard beer fans try the Lindeman's Framboise or Kriek. more
