After reading some of the negative reviews...I felt like I should post my recent experience at Monk's. I felt the service was very professional. Both bartenders were pleasant ...

Worst

Great beer selection and cozy ambience if it's not too crowded. Service can be slow and sometimes rude regardless of how busy they are. The food is good (especially the fries), ...

MMM...Mussels! 9/19/2002

I'm not sure why a few people complained about the service- I've been to Monk's about 6 times, and have always had good service. I highly recommend going if you enjoy mussels and a great beer selection. The burgers are pretty good, the fries are great, and the mussels are flavorful and juicy- I recommend the spiciest two (ask your server- they're very helpful in this respect). The weekend crowd is friendly and classy, and the ambiance is terrific in the back room- a great place to take a few friends. Pros: Great mussels, Beer selection, Cozy Cons: Loud at times more

WONDERFUL all around!!!! 8/30/2002

Monk's is my favorite bar in the City of Philadelphia. You go there if you want to hang out and have some great food and a few beers. The beer selection is amazing and the staff is very knowledgable and can help you decide which beer best fits you. I have heard alot about the quality of service, but you have to keep it in perspective. They service is not the most attentive, but, if you ask for service or help selecting a beer they are most helpful...you just have to ask for it. The mussels and fries are among the best around and the remainder of the menu is very good (don't miss the burgers)...easy on the pocket book too. Pros: Great Beer Selection Cons: Sometimes long wait more

beer,,, food,,, beer,,, 8/10/2002

I love beer. New beers, old beers, different beers. I love food. I love beer and food. I love bartenders, and waitresses who can accurately describe the characteristics of beers and food,, so I don't order something that is not to my liking. Great beers and food,,, knowledgable service. Monk's has got it. You've got to have the spanish flies,, fries,, and a piraat,, or try the monk's brown ale. Friendly, prompt, attentive service,,,, and you don't need to sign over your youngest child to afford it. Pros: Beer Selection, Beer description, Service Cons: limited seating more

Fun night out without breaking the bank 8/7/2002

My husband and I discovered Monks nearly a year ago and it remains one of our favorite spots. We love sampling from the extensive beer list and enjoy the crowd. The mussels, burgers and fries can't be beat and at Monks prices...this place is a keeper! Pros: excellent food, fun environment, phenomenal prices more

Spanish Flies 8/7/2002

A beer drinkers dream where above average bar food accompanies great tasting beer. The fries are out of this world with the special sauce provided, I recommend spanish flies for the more adventurous types..... Pros: Good Food, Great Beer, Reasonable Prices Cons: Crowded, Tight more

WORTH THE TRIP TO CENTER CITY 8/5/2002

I have been here at least 3 times and have never been disappointed. The atmosphere is divine. Granted it's small and a little tight but the food and beer selection make the size pale. The food is simple yet it tastes excellent. The beer selection is the largest I have ever seen. Make sure you ask for thier fries and (must have) the apple sausage sandwich---YUM!!! Bring a friend or lots of friends. This is without a doubt the best little pub I have ever been in. ENJOY!!! Pros: DRINKS, DELICIOUS FOOD, VALUE Cons: SIZE, NOISE LEVEL, SMOKING more

Warm and fuzzy 7/25/2002

Monk's has the best atmosphere, especially in the back room. The low lighting make it feel comfy and inviting, and the service is terrific. Our server seemed extremely knowledgable on what they had to offer for alcoholic beverages, which is pretty impressive, considering on how big their drink menu is! The food is delicious, which makes up for the slightly uncomfortable seating. Go there! You won't regret it! Pros: atmosphere, service, food quality Cons: seating, parking more

RUDE, RUDE, RUDE! 6/3/2002

I have been to Monk's a few times because I like their fries alot. The service is very rude and you can't sit at a table unless you are having an entree. If there is no room at the bar, I guess you just have to hold your fries in your hands. They seem to care more about making money than happy customers. I'd rather spend my money where there is less attitude. more

Simply the best 5/28/2002

Best beer, best ambience, best food (especially the moules frites!)--simply the best bar in Philly. The only real drawback--and it is a rather big one--is the crowd. The space is small, and they don't take reservations; if you arrive after six or six thirty (any night of the week), count on at least a 45 minute, if not a full hour, wait for a table. And don't count on getting a seat at the bar in the meantime--the two bars only seat about six or eight people each, and they're packed even before the tables. If you don't want to fight the crowd, go for lunch. Then it's utterly charming and headache-less. more
