I called St. Paul Plumbing and Heating to fix the leaky taps in my shower. My family has used them in the past and was impressed with thier service, and they seemed to be reasonable in price.
With this past experience I didn't hesitate to call them, thinking it would be an easy, quick, relatively inexpensive fix. I wish I would have hesitated a little more.
The tech arrived on time, and was very nice, friendly and professional looking. That is where the nice things I have to say about this company end.
He took one look at the taps in my shower, turned them on to notice how they were leaking, and told me that it would be very difficult to fix such old valves. (they are from the 60's) and that half the time when you try to fix them, you break them.
He ended up writing me a quote for the eye-popping amount of $415 to REPAIR the old taps, OR $1200 to put in a new single handle shower faucet, which didn't included repairing the tile.
He seemed to already know the answer to what I was going to pick, and wasn't surprised when I declined the service, and happily took my $68 check.
But, the story doesn't end there. I work at a large home improvement store, and I told one of the plumbing experts we have my story. He explained to me that this whole type of plumbing operation (so called "flat rate" plumbers) is essentially a giant scam. He said he has talked to flat rate plumbers who have done no actual plumbing working in years, they simply drive around, throw out ridiculous quotes, collect thier service call fee, and move on. THIS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!
My connection at work ended up offering to come over and take a look at it for me, he ended up fixing it PERFECTLY with only a screw driver, 2 wrenches, and about 6 ft of teflon tape to fix the packing in the stems. I paid him less than the service call to SPPHC cost, and the work was done in the time it took SPPHC to write up the estimate.
Even if I were to have gone with a plumber who was actually "in business", at the average rate of $100 or so an hour, this repair should have cost less than 1/4 what SPPHC quoted me.
These guys are in business simply to drive around and take call after call making $70 a call. I dont know what happened, since they used to do good work. This is a travesty. To quote what comes out to be over $800 an hour to do a simple repair requiring no special tools and no parts! SHAME ON THEM.
I dont know if all the positive reviews of them are ligit, but if you look at the other reviews those people write, they never seem to have anything bad to say about any company, sounds a little fishy to me!
DO NOT hire these guys unless you have already gotten other estimates and they are for some reason cheaper...
