Angies List was wrong 11/21/2011

We checked Angies list and went with Mike's but Angies list was wrong. The price was higher than we expected and service average. more

Highly reccomended - fair, honest, competitive and convenient 5/13/2010

I learned about Mike's from Angie's List and NPR's Car Talk. He had such positive reviews and I saw he was registered with AAA so I brought my car in for brake service. I liked the fact that he offered loaner cars at discount and that he was truthful and upfront on my estimate and didn't try to low ball me. I don't know alot about cars other than putting in gas so having a mechanic that is honest and fair is really important to me. I got the feel from Mike and his son that they would do right by me whether I know the difference or not. When something came up during the day that would have effectted the original estimate I was called and advised of my options before anything was done. The work was done on time and within the range of the estimate given. I was a little early to pick up my car so I was able to get some work done in their waiting area ( they have a really nice clean waiting area with WIFI, coffee and flat screen tv) while I waited. I was really impressed with my overall experience and how competitive they were on the actual service done and the conveniences offered. I had gotten a dealer estimate and another shops and they ended up about in the middle. I would reccomend them to a freind or coworker without hesitation. I actually spoke to a neighbor recently and he told me he has been going to Mikes for years and has always been taken care off. I have a 90K major service coming up and I will definitly bring it to Mike's rather than my car dealer ( who I usually go to for major services) Really impressed! more

Finally, an honest mechanic. 5/13/2010

Mike's offers great service at very competitive prices. They always get back to you in a timely manner & explain everything they are going to do to the vehicle and why they are doing it. Also, if a repair isn't super urgent, they give you the option of coming back at a later date to get it done then (it's a big help for the cash-strapped). They have wonderful, friendly customer service. Plus, they even have loaner cars so you won't be stuck while your car is in the shop. more

demoting Mike's to one star 5/18/2009

Well, I wrote that last review three years ago, and I'm sorry to say I know more about Mike's than I did then. They kept trying to charge me $850 to fix an oil leak, using scare tactics about the car catching fire, saying it was so expensive b/c they had to remove the engine. I freaked out and had my dad look at the thing because, come on, the car is going on 20, do I want to spend almost $1K to fix it? Long story short, he found they'd not replaced the oil gasket seal last time they gave me an oil change. You know, that rubber thing that goes around the cap and keeps your oil from slowly leaking out. Yet they claim to have this 25-point check or whatever. Mike's is very smooth at finding problems with your car you weren't aware of and which aren't really that important. I never went back there again and am glad. I now see the honest guys up at Teele Square Auto. more

Unprofessional organization 5/18/2009

Well, if you're into highway robbery then check out Mike's in Somerville. This guy and his staff were both unprofessional and downright rude when my pregnant fiancée and I had our vehicle towed to their shop last week. We were initially quoted an insanely high price to replace a common and very easily installed part. Then, when we decided to seek help elsewhere, Mike himself refused to release my fiancées vehicle without us tkaing care of a 200 diagnostic fee which was neither authorized or discussed prior to AAA taking the car over there. (Note to self: do not mess with a disgruntled, very pregnant woman) We were looking for easy and honest and weren't terribly concerned with price. However, we ended up being treated terribly and we're out 200 bucks for nothing. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!! more

Mike's Auto seems good, but isn't. 1/23/2007

I moved to Somerville over a year ago and immediately looked for an auto repair shop to have some work done on my 1998 Toyota Camry. The rear brakes needed to be replaced, so Mike's did the work and charged me what I thought was a fair price. Unfortunately, I had to bring the car in TWICE within four months to have them completely replace the rear brakes again. TWICE. They didn't charge me for the additional repairs (thank goodness because it was obviously their faulty service that was the problem). During the second repair, I also had them do an oil change. Shortly after that, my car started leaking noticable amounts of oil. After taking my car to a Valvoline Instant Oil Change to see what the problem was, they explained that my filter had just been installed wrong during my last oil change. They quickly adjusted the filter and fixed my oil leak. So my experience with Mike's auto is over $1,000 in repairs amounting to two very bad break replacements and a faulty oil change. Not to mention that Mike Sr actually told me he was going to "kill my car" because the brakes wouldn't work properly. Don't be fooled by their clean premises and father/son business, this auto repair shop isn't worth the trouble!! more

Mike's Auto Service Is High Priced and Unfriendly 11/21/2006

My girlfriend went to Mike's Auto Service in Union Square in Somerville to get a battery replaced. Initially Mike told her it would cost $90. After they finished the work they called her and told her it would cost $215. When I called Mike to politely ask how he came about these costs and charges, he immediately got angry and defensive. He told me that a new battery for a 2002 Altima costs $99 and that labor to install the battery costs $73, plus $30 for testing the alternator and charging the battery. The remaining costs were due to the disposal of the dead battery and taxes. After asking what type of battery was installed, he said he did not have time for me and hung up the phone. I have called numerous body shops in the area and have found that the average cost to purchase and install a battery in a 2002 altima costs $75. A complete rip= off and a joke of an autobody shop!!! I have filed a complaint with the BBB and plan to tell everyone I know in Somerville about this experience. more

Highly Recommended Mechanic 5/13/2006

At least four people recommended Mike's to me before I finally gave in and dragged my aching Mazda there. It was everything people said it was: clean, friendly, efficient, and, above all, honest. My car ended up needing a minor repair in an expensive place (the middle fo the engine), and Mike really went over the pros and cons with me of bothering. I never felt pressured and - this is important - I never felt condescended to for being a woman. They explained everything in a straightforward and clear way and I got fairly charged for what they did (I didn't opt for the big repairs). It's a family run business, with Mike Jr and Mike Sr. If my car lives long enough I am definitely sticking with them. Bonus: you can get a loaner car for $10/day if yours is in the shop. This place really was everything people told me it was. more
