The worst - ever! I don't even know where to begin, but I will have to say this, I read the reviews on Yelp and Citysearch about this dentist and they seemed to be ok. , but my experience at Dr. Douglas James's office was beyond awful. It was so bad, I filed a complaint with the insurance on them. \r I went in to Dr. James's office to check on an existing crown. They put together a treatment plan for me for over $1500 AFTER the insurance, claiming my insurance hardly covered anything. I did some research online and couldn't understand why the crown cost so much. I contacted my insurance and understood that everything was covered and that the dentist never called them. Dr. James's office claimed my insurance didn't cover the removal of existing crown, pins for the new crown, the temp crown etc. Basically they charged me extra for each piece of work which according to HMO pricing booklet and multiple insurance representatives told me are covered under a pricing for a tyical crown. \r After I spoke with Dr. James's office explaining that they don't follow the negotiated pricing standards with CIGNA HMO, they provided me with a new plan which was slightly less expensive but still way higher than what it should cost according to CIGNA Insurance representative. I finally decided to switch my primary dentist per CIGNA representative's suggestion. When I called to have my X-rays released to the new dentist, Dr. James's office tried to charge $25 for them. AGAIN, I called my insurance and asked if this is normal. CIGNA's representative said that they can not charge extra for X-rays they have already taken. \r At the end of the day, my insurance company was shocked by all of this and followed up with me to get all the information they could about the dentist. If I were you, I would stay clear of this office. more

Outstanding dentist. He doesn't make a mountain out of a mole hill. Go to see him if you want a conservation approach to your dental needs. He doesn't look for problems. There are several specialists in his practice. I like knowing there are specialists close by in case I need one. more

Thank you Linda for recommending I change my insurance to a PPO. My HMO was terrible!!! They only covered cleanings and had restrictions on everything else. Your staff is nice and so are the doctors. more

This is the greatest dental office in the city!!! HANDS DOWN. They made me into a new man! A little bonding, a little gum reshaping, a little orthoddontics, a little reshaping of my from teeth, a little replacing old dark silver fillings, replacing some stained while plastic fillings and two porcelain crowns on my back teeth. Fantastic results!! The doctors all worked well together, the treatments were seamless since the specialists were all in the same office. That is definitely a plus for me. I feel much more confident when I go into court knowing I look OK rather than have people distracted by my crooked tooth. (no pun intended). I didn't want my ""crooked"" teeth to reflect adversely on my client's innocence or guilt. The doctor's and staff were all professional as I expected them to be. They made it relatively easy for me to undergo treatments considering the craziness of my work schedule. So thank you Dr. Kizor for straightening my teeth, Dr. Biama for my gum reshaping, Dr. James for my fillings/crown and not forgotten, the hygienist whose son went to the same college as my daughter. more

I am blessed to have had the opportunity to be a patient for 10 years of Michigan Avenue Dental Associates. I started as a young teenager, had preventative sealants placed on my teeth , had orthodontic work done and I do not have any fillings, absolutely ZERO. They inspired me to clean my teeth thoroughly daily and I do and consequently have not had a ONE cavity. They emphasized prevention to me at any early age and I am grateful for that. more

Michigan Avenue Dental Associates has been the dental office I have been going to for many years. I have great confidence in their work. Their fees are relatively standard for the area. But what is most important is the honestly and ethics they have. I would never go to another dental office and take my chance the dentist is as ethical and honest as the doctors at Michigan Avenue Dental Associates have multiple times demonstrated to me and my friends whom I have referred to the office over the years. Go here if you want honest, upfront and kind/gentle treatment. more

I was in the office recently and their receptionist, Linda, asked me to write a review. I welcomed the request because I think I know the office very well after being a patient for over 20 plus years. When I was young, I've dreaded going to the dentist. Needless to say, I'll never feared going to the dentist after visiting their office. After my experience at Michigan Avenue Dental I've not only realized how imperative it is to take care of your smile, but I've also realized that a dentist is nothing to fear. In all my past experiences, no other group of people have worked so well with their patients. No other persons have had the patience, kindness, and just overall positive attitude as this team. Even the atmosphere of the place was welcoming and comforting. They'll do whatever it takes to make you feel more relaxed and more at home. When you walk in, you can't help but feel a bit at ease. In other traditional dentist offices, you'll see small, closed rooms with probably no windows, but at Michigan Avenue Dental you have a beautiful view of Lake Michigan!! And the whole office is open which gives you a welcoming and a more comfortable feeling. I also loved how instead of overwhelming you with little booklets of startling teeth related illnesses, they had your typical fashion magazines and others to choose from. They do not try to overwhelm their patients or chide them for what they are not doing, but at the same time, they are being helpful and you leave knowing full well what you must improve on in order to have a healthier smile. Overall, they are a great group of people working together to get their jobs done and at the same time make you feel 100% comfortable. They understand that many people dread the dentist and go out of their way to make their patients feel at home. They deserve five stars, in my opinion. The office has been around for 100 years, so that says something very good about the quality of care, the kind of care, everything that makes an outstanding office an outstanding office for year after year. more

Thanks everyone for doing such a terrific job!! You guys are the best!! And have always treatment me so well. Went in with a tooth ache last week thinking I was going to have to have my tooth removed it hurt so bad, but came out with a nice looking filling. I've been coming here for several years and have great confidence in your treatments. Dr. James is the best. Linda, thank you for your help with my insurance, if you can call my HMO an insurance company. It only covers the very, very basics and doesn't cover quality work, long lasting work or good looking work. Thanks Terry for the kindness you have always shown me when I have my teeth cleaned. I originally came to Michigan Avenue Dental Associates a couple of years ago for a second opinion from a recommendation by my wife The previous dentist I had been seeing always seemed to fine something wrong every time I went in. I just got tired of the same old same old, so I listened to my wife and saw the dentist whom she has been seeing who regularly has determined everything was OK with her, even though she has a lot of childhood fillings as about as old as she is and he doesn't tell her she needs them replaced. All she needs is to stop the grinding habit she knows she has been doing and Dr. James told her about it and finally she agreed to have him make her one, after she recently broke a tooth weakened from her night grinding. .He made her a night appliance for grinding.......to prevent problems from occurring, not just waiting and watching until something expensive is needed .I liked his preventative approach. She should have taken his advise earlier. So I went in and yes I still have some old fillings that haven't been replaced yet, but he said they are holding their own, no need to replace them, and he will alert me if there should be any change that really necessitates their expensive replacement. He said even though the fillings maybe ""old"", they would probably would last at least 10 or more years. I am certain if I was still with my prior dentist I would have three more expensive crowns by now. I appreciate the conservative approach Dr. James takes. . more

I write alot of reviews. Some are critical and some are complimentary. Today I visited Michigan Avenue Dental Associates and my review is a complimentary review. My experience today was unexpected and unique for me. I have good teeth. Hardly any fillings. Yesterday I broke a back tooth and it hurt like hell, I didn't sleep a wink last night.I could see that it broke in half from front to back. The tongue side of the tooth was waving in the breeze. I asked a co-worker this morning for a reference of dentist downtown. She said many people at our company go to Michigan Avenue Dental Asociates. So I called them. They fitted me in as best they could this morning for my emergency. Dr. James saw me. An x-ray was taken. Not to my surprise he said,""Unfortunately the tooth will need to be removed."" He also said I needed a protective appliance for the rest of my teeth because he noted I was a grinder. I knew I was a grinder, My previous dentist noted it too, but he never emphasized how important it was to address my night grinding. He just made a passing comment. Dr. James on the other hand indicated it was imperative to address my grinding or else additional teeth of mine would be fracturing and/or chipping, one at a time, not necessarily needing to be extracted, but needing some fillings or crowns. After a confirmatory diagnosis by another dentist, (I like the idea of a group practice that works so professionally together), he fortunately took out the tooth today. The nerve was exposed and I didn't sleep a wink last night and having it taken out today was a blessing, even though I know I messed up his schedule. I'm going back for a protective guard and an implant. I wish I had gone to this office years ago. Thanks everyone for treating my terrible problem situation so professionally. And look forward in seeing everyone at my next visit. more

I have been a patient at Michigan Avenue Dental Associates for many years and have always been very pleased with my care. Dr James always provides me Top quality care and if I have ever had an issue it was addressed immediately and to my satisfaction. I also really enjoy the care and time the hygienist Megan takes with me at each of my cleaning visits. They treat you personally , follow up with phone calls after your appointment and you don't feel as if you are just another number. If you are looking for a new Dentist I highly recommend their office. more

I am new to downtown and had to go in search of new Dentist after I had been going to the same dentist for most of my Life. I am very pleased with The Dentists and staff at Michigan Avenue. The office was clean and well equipped.I was so nervous at my first visit and Shanta made me feel comfortable and the doctors, Dr Lobo and Dr Rosha ( I saw several since they are a multispecialty office) all were very professional and and everyone answered my many questions. I appreciated the fact that I could have the work I needed done in the same office and not have to be referred out. My first visit and my follow up visits were all very good as well. I feel very happy to have found a new Dentist that I trust and know I will get top quality care. I would recommend this office to anyone who is looking for a caring trustworthy enviorment. more

I have been a patient at Michigan Avenue Dental for 8 years and have nothing but praise for the staff, Linda, Joyce, Kiki, Shanta, Terry and Megan. They make me feel special every time I come to the office for cleanings. The dentist I have been seeing, Dr. James explains all work that he will be doing. It took a long time to get it to look great; crowns and fillings and root canal and gum work all went better than I thought. My HMO didn't cover anywhere near what I thought they would cover---I should have looked over the fine print of the limitations on my policy before choosing an HMO.
