MATTY B'S CLOSED PERMANETLY? 2/15/2009

I went to a great website for reservations (opentable dot com) and made my reservation at Matty B's at 7:00 PM on Valentines Day. I thought I was being romantic and smart with my money (not terribly pricey at first glance). UNFORTUNATLY, when I called Matty B's phone number to ensure our spot was confirmed on V Day the phone number does not ring like normal. It was wierd; the number dialed doesn?t get disconnected; you just hear nothing on the other line. FOOLISHLY, I passed this off as some sort of Phone Company problem and surly Matty B's must still have our reservation. TRAGICLY, upon arrival at the front door my girlfriend said ""wait this place looks closed,"" and indeed the two front doors were locked! No note, no directions, no explanation. SO I MUST ASSUME MATTY B'S IS CLOSED PERMANETLY, OR HAS REALLY REALLY MESSED UP MANAGEMENT PRACTICES. THANKS FOR RUINING VALENTINES DAY MATTY B'S. IF YOU GO TO MATTY B'S YOU ARE MAKING A BIG MISTAKE! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! Pros: I still like Matt Birk as a MN Viking, but that's it. Cons: MATTY B'S IS CLOSED PERMANETLY? more

A good experience, give it a try 12/21/2008

My wife and I had a date night last week and wanted to try somewhere we have never been. It was very a good experience. Unlike a lot of the other post we had great service and our food was wonderful. We will be going back to Matty B's very soon.\r \r Pros: Ambience and food Cons: We had a hard time finding a free parking spot but they do have a ramp next to it more

Great food and excellent service 4/12/2008

We made reservations for Matty B's for dinner before the Wild game. I decided to check the reviews on the web and was disturbed to see that they were not highly recommended. However the six of us decided to try it. Don't believe the poor reviews. The food and service were excellent. In fact the walleye fish fry was hot and fresh. The halibut was superb. And the service was great. We will be back. Thanks for a great time. PS: the Wild won in overtime against the AV's. Pros: Food and Service more

Would Not Recommend Eating Here 3/7/2008

My husband insisted that we try Matty B's. So we scheduled reservations for a time after the Wild Hockey crowd cleared out. Still the service was terrible; extremely slow and inattentive. I couldn't figure it out because there was hardly anybody left in the restaurant. They ran out of the chicken entree. My husband said his meatloaf was very good so that was the highlight of the evening. My mother (from out of town) and I ordered chicken chili only to find mostly beans and no chicken . I don't know why but the soup was so hot it took a long time before we could cool it down. If you are willing to put up with lousy service but love meatloaf...I would recommend Matty B's. Otherwise, we won't be back. Pros: Good Meatloaf Cons: Lousy Service more

Huge disappointment 2/17/2008

I figured a St Paul native, would put his heart into his ""heart of downtown "" restaurant. Nope. I made reservations for 6 with an 8:30 reservation. 3 couples, 2 from wisconsin...me from saint paul. Boy was i embarassed. There was no host at the door for 10 mins, and the bartender told us we should hunt her down. Ok, seriously. Once seated we order some apps, calamari, crab cakes, and artichoke dip. We sent our almost still alive calamari back, and it became the ongoing joke for the rest of the night. After we ordered our entrees, our server came back to tell us they were out of half of what we ordered...long story short...2 steaks sent back, very bland pork chops, and no sauce on the halibut...and horrible garlic mashies....how do you mess up on potatos? Poor Service, Horrible Food, not expensive but still over priced, Birk still my fav Viking. Pros: cold beer, great booths, decor Cons: Service, food, music was inappropriate and loud. more

Worst Experience EVER! 2/4/2008

I cannot begin to explain the horrible service, food and atmosphere we experienced at Matty B's. I like to think that my husband and I are relatively casual and OK with bad service once in a while, but this was ridiculous! The server (who shall remain nameless) was not the least bit attentive. After placing our order, he waited 15 minutes to tell us that they were out of French Onion Soup -what? He passed our table several times, noticed our empty water & drink glasses, and still managed to not ask for refills. It was almost like he was sleep walking! We didn't even get bread until after we were almost done with our appetizer! The hostess was the one to refill our H2O & bring us another drink. I hope he tips her out!\r \r Food: The nachos were average (I could have made them in my microwave) and the $38 porterhouse was HORRIBLE! It wasn't even cooked correctly...overdone & fatty. It was a very poor piece of meat.\r \r Overall, we were so unimpressed that I swore I would write a review about this place. Please, please, PLEASE spend your hard earned $$ somewhere else that actually cares about the customer (service & food quality). There are so many other GREAT restaurants in the area...don't waste your time!\r more

Highly recommend! 1/13/2008

We found Matty B's on the internet without knowing much about it. When I read the reviews on this page, I started to get a little nervous. Thankfully, we had an amazing time! We went there on a Saturday night to celebrate birthdays in the family. The atmosphere from the moment we walked in was classy without being too uptight. Our waitress was wonderful! She really took care of us and told us more about the restaurant and the owner (Matt Birk, MN Vikings player). The owner was actually there and was wonderful enough to talk to us and watch a little of the football game currently on. The food was amazing from the first bite of bread. They had a jalapeno potato bread which was excellent! The wild rice soup was creamy without feeling too heavy. The entrees were all wonderful and had some amazing flavors. Finally, the dessert was a perfect ending to the meal. The banana's foster was fun because they made it table side. Overall, it was the most fun I've had in a restaurant in a long time! We plan on going back again, hopefully soon. Pros: Great atmosphere, great food, wonderful service Cons: none! more

MN Bland 1/23/2007

We dined on a Saturday evening, during a Wild game. I was disappointed to see many Wild fans in the restaurant, in jerseys and tennis shoes. C'mon show some class people! The service was good, our waitress very friendly. She seemed busy and could have used an extra hand with expediting relish trays and orders, but she handled it well. The food MN bland. For starters we had the calamari, which was served in a coned dish with parchment paper, nice touch but maybe I am short but I had to keep tipping the cone dealy to stab the food, which caused oil to drip all over. The relish tray is a nice touch, the olive spread is very good, use it on the bread. The salad, another mess ...they serve the ""wedge"" which means you spend most of your time cutting lettuce to form your own salad. \r I had the steak which was good, the garlic ""smashed"" potatoes on the other hand could have used some actual garlic. My husband ordered the cajun porkchops When one thinks of cajun seasoning one anticipates the food to be spicy. I think they used seasoning salt, red pepper flakes and called it a day. \r I may return again, maybe will try the Mpls version I hear the menu is better. Pros: close to theaters, arena, validated parking Cons: bland food more

Very questionable wait staff 12/4/2006

We had hoped to get into the St Paul Grill or Pazzaluna but both were booked due to a show in town. We made some reservations at Matty B's and arrived early. The maitre de asked us to wait in the bar and our table would be ready in 15 minutes. He told us to start a tab and he would have it transferred from the bar to our table. We asked if he was going to come and get us and he told us ""it would be easier for me if you came and found me"". The bartenders were very friendly and the pour is generous. When we were going to track down the maitre de to get our table, I asked them to transfer the tab. The bartenders said there was no way to do that and they had no idea what the maitre de was talking about. They told us to just tell our wait person what we ordered in the bar and have them charge it to our dinner bill. We were seated at a nice booth (out of sight of the band though halfway through the meal the server asked us if we wanted to move). The tables were set nicely but they cover the linens with paper which is like wearing tennis shoes with a tuxedo. After getting another drink (we figured we were going to need them) we received our relish tray and bread and then waited for 25 minutes before our server returned . We had ordered an appetizer that they kept trying to clear off the table within minutes of receiving it. When we received our dinner, they had tried to clear the appetizer 4 times. My wife had a steak which was very good as were the mashed potatoes. I had the Alaska King Crab salad. I'm not sure what they are thinking but some shredded crabmeat with tiny, skinny pieces is not what I expected from a king crab salad. It was marginal at best. As with the appetizer, they kept trying to prematurely clear our dinner. The staff in this restaurant (except for the bartenders) needs some serious help. The sirloin was good as was the baked brie appetizer. Nice ambience. No chance of going back but it has promise. Pros: Good steak, good bar & bartenders Cons: Wait staff needs help more

Enjoyable visit 11/17/2006

I have to say, I enjoyed my visit to this restaurant. I decided to take my parents, both in their upper 70's, to Matty B's for dinner after doing some research on the restaurant. I can't say it was disappointing. We enjoyed a very solid meal in a great setting. The supper club style dining still has something to be said for it, and the meal was very good. However, I think that the wait staff needs some attention. We made it obvious that we were there to enjoy ourselves and sit back, which is what you do in a ""supper club"", but we were constantly rushed by our waiter. At the same time, he wasn't able to answer our questions regarding the menu. The food itself was very good, but it was also way too much to eat. I would rather have paid half the price for half the food. Overall, I can't say I wouldn't go back, but it may be a while. Pros: Great concept and excellent setting. Loved the decor Cons: Service just not there for the price of the food more

Wouldn't Go Back 10/21/2006

After investigating Matty B's on-line and seeing the wonderful decor, our group was excited to check out the St. Paul supper club. While the decor did in fact impress, the rest of the dining experience was a little disappointing. To start off, our party of seven was placed in the bar because they couldnt accommodate a group our size in the restaurant, despite the fact we had reservations. The food was mediocre at best, especially considering the prices of the meals. We were also told that several menu items were not being served. We were even told at one point that the restaurant didnt have milk! The band scheduled for 7:30 was nowhere in sight when we left at 9:00. While the wait staff was polite, they seemed very unorganized. Id like to give Matty Bs another chance, but considering their pricing, Im not going to risk it. They should really work out the quirks of a new establishment before opening a second location. Pros: Restaurant decor was beautiful. Convenient parking. Cons: Unorganized service and below average food. more
