The best thign about this salon is Kelley Baker. She is the best brow artist in the world. When she shapes your brows, your whole face looks better! Pros: Kelley Baker ...

This place is a joke! All the reviews I just read sound like they were written by the staff of this tragic salon. Rachel THINKS she's God's gift! When in reality she is not as ...

They cancelled on me twice and were not professional. 6/29/2008

I will never know if this place was good or not due to Kelly cancelling my appointment twice less than a half an hour prior. The receptionist left me a message to call back only if I REALLY wanted to reschedule....no thanks. Pros: Near my home. Cons: Can't get an appt and cancels last minute. Rude receptionist. more

I put my money where my HEAD is... 6/12/2008

I have the distinct pleasure of reviewing services from time to time as I write for several mags, blogs, and new media outlets. Ever since I reviewed Kelley's brow shaping services and Rachel's haircuts for Daily Candy, I've been coming back regularly and religiously. I do not let anyone else touch my brows or cut my hair. I have no fear referring both ladies to all my friends and I *pay* for all my services. I put my money where my mouth is and hope that you will too someday. I get professional treatment and love the chill atmosphere. I'd rather let my brows go wild then let anyone else (but me) mess with them. M. Murphy is an easy place for me to champion. Pros: Super chill atmosphere; just like the locals like it. Cons: Tourists more

Cheap in Talent, Rich in Hype 6/5/2008

There are two goddesses: one of art and beauty and one of greed and material gain. If you devote your life to art and beauty... material gain will follow . Unfortunately, at Mathis Murphy the goddess of hype and materialism have tried to leap-frog art and beauty. A legendary clothes horse taught me that a great haircut should be the accessory that makes a K-mart outfit look couture. A hair cut at Mathis Murphy made my couture look like K-mart. Mathis Murphy makes sure that the clientele is aware of their forged pedigree. "Paris and Lindsay go there all the time" is manipulatively dropped every where when researching this Salon. It is a cheap ruse, I spent two hundred dollars to find out my hairdresser Sydnee possessed all the craftsmanship of a high school vocational school. I received the all time worst hair cut of my life. The salon kindly offered to fix it for free but I didn't trust them enough, to have the wisdom to: A. listen to me. B. follow directions C. My travestly of a cut can be seen all over the Silverlake hipsters but it does not suit my face and it was not what I asked for. The craftsmanship wasn't so good either... less tan a week later I can see all off the compositional flaws when it hasn't been dried with a hair drier. The reason I have short hair is so I do not have to dry it! When I first made an appointment with Sydnee she didn't show up because she burnt her hand ( I invisioned Chernobyl, but when I asked, two days later, there were no visible marks and she barely remembered it) For me letting someone go near my head with a pair of Scissors is a leap of faith... I smacked the concrete. I'm still not sure what happened... I do not think I had Paris or Lindsay's hair dresser. I was perfectly willing to pay handsomely for the right cut but I've had better cuts at Floyd's for twenty bucks. Mathis Murphy needs to rely more on the goddesses of art and beauty and maybe then they will deserve the good press releases. Pros: Lovely atmosphere and Kelley does amazing brows Cons: unskilled staff more

KELLEY IS THE BEST! 5/31/2008

I have to completely disagree with the previous review. I have been a "Kelley" customer for many years and she is a fantastic eyebrow shaper and a great person. The previous review seems out of character for Kelley so I can only assume she had an emergency. Great talent, very friendly and I LOVE MY BROWS! I wouldn't trust anyone else EVER! Pros: Best brows on earth! Cons: parking can sometimes be a little challenges but always .wo more

The brow artist is horribly unreliable and cancelled my appointment right before. The receptionists were unhelpful and rude and gave me some made up reason why the brow person had to leave. I agree with the person who also rated this place a 1 star, the people here are RUDE! Also, how unprofessional to cancel an appointment less than 30 minutes prior?!! I took work off early to try and make my appointment and it took me an hour to get to the salon. NEVER AGAIN! I would NOT recommend this place! Pros: Nothing Cons: RUDE AND UNRELIABLE more

Kelly Baker is a Brow Artist!! 5/19/2008

Kelly Baker at Mathis Murphy is the best brow artist in all of Los Angeles. I am a longtime customer of hers from when she first started at Damone Roberts. I was crushed when she left there, but elated to find her again at Mathis Murphy. After she does my brows, it is guaranteed that at least 10 people will stop me on the street and compliment me on my brows. She and the salon are absolutely amazing and I HIGHLY recommend that you go and visit them. Pros: Professional staff, beautiful, non-pretentious salon! So NOT LA! Thankfully!!! Cons: Parking on the weekends. It is Abbott Kinney after all. more

Kelly at Mathis Murphy is a life saver. Perfect brows are essential!! They set the tone for your face and bring out your natural beauty. When I moved to LA almost 2 years ago I was afraid I wouldn't find someone that I liked. However, luckily a friend of mine referred me to Kelly and ever since I have not stopped getting compliments. I wish I could take Kelly with me where ever I go! I highly recommend everyone to go to Kelly! I go every week. I always feel refreshed and beautiful when I leave her chair. Thank you KELLY!!!! more

Kelley Baker, the original Brow Diva is Best Eyebrow Stylist in LA 5/15/2008

KatieAlexander Provided by Partner
Kelley is the absolute best eyebrow shaper ever. I've been going to her since 2002 when she started at Damone Roberts in Beverly Hills. She was his first hire, I remember he called her his "chosen one" and trained her. Kelley and Kristina were the original Brow Diva's. I'm one of Kelley's older clients in more than one way. My eyes are drooping a little and she's created a lift by waxing a nice arch which has opened up my eyes and taken a few years off my face without surgery. I'll follow her forever. I did follow her after she left Damone to be a mom and have her cute little boy (now 2 years old). Then she helped Natalie open BDB and trained her staff. Now I go to Mathis Murphy to see Kelley. I'm glad she relocated from Beverly Hills, it's a relaxed and hip environment. Kelley is always on time with her appointments. I like that. I know I can book an appointment for 3:15 on a Thursday afternoon and be outta there by 3:30. Love you Kelley. Hope you win the Best Brows in LA. You deserve it. more

Great Salon 4/9/2008

Rachel is awesome. She is amazing with color and revived my hair beautifully with rich, vibrant tones from a previous bad color job, at a different salon. She has more than earned my confidence in her. Rachel has a brilliant eye for color. The salon is decorated beautifully in a zen sort of way and has the most comfortable chairs at the shampoo bowl that I've ever experienced. The staff is lovely, very nice, considerate and accommodating. Pros: great with color, the decor/atmosphere, nice staff, honest Cons: none more

a taste of BH right here on AK 3/3/2008

Finally found something on the westside. I saw this salon written up in Allure magazine for their manicurist which was amazing by the way. She used a brown sugar scrub on my feet that is made by the owners sister. Quite an entrepeneurial couple of gals. A perfect polish that has lasted since my pedicure. While I was there I saw a girl named Sydnee do an amazing blowout and style on someone so I decided I must have one. Actually I ended up getting a Kerastase treatment and a cut. My hair felt and looked amazing ,not a big surprise considering she told me she started at Sally Hershberger then worked at Neil George. Then I got my brows done w/Kelly who started w/Damone Roberts, another place I used to go. This beautiful salon hidden on Abbot Kinney is also hiding so much talent right here on the west side. I have no need to drive into BH anymore because I don't have time and now I have my people for everything. Sydnee and Kelly are amazing ,next time I will try color here, I can't wait. Pros: everything under one roof, high quality Cons: none more

Top ten in L.A.! 2/23/2008

I own the gallery in front of Mathis Murphy Salon and am in a great position to see real results from the salon. People come outta that salon smiling! We see literally hundreds of clients go in and out every week. What we see are delighted clients. The stylists all seem to have a rabidly loyal clientele. I just had my hair cut by Djuna. WOW! Casual but sophisticated with a feminine edge. For me, the real test is the number of women who come in and ask where i get my hair done! Anna cuts Tom's hair. I do not know how to describe the incredible difference after she cut his hair. She completely changed his look to contemporary and hip. Anna has an intuitive ability that shows. He says it is the best haircut he has ever had. Rachel Lindy, the owner, was a star in the hair industry before she opened this salon. She has been known as a top rated colorist for years. Rachel just seems to give every client her very best. She is a perfectionist and her clients are blown away with what she does with their hair. She is that good. Her reputation of being among the top ten stylists in Los Angeles is deserved. Check out the press about Rachel. Yes, she has a celebrity clientele but it is her day to day excellence that impresses us. Sean, in addition to being a fun guy to be around, has a devoted following that is growing like crazy. Tiffany's look is very modern.. Sydnee is somewhat new to the salon with a huge client base. She is a very popular hair stylist with a flair for curly hair. Jen's look is sophisticated.. Kaydee, tho new, is already very popular. The salon began as a partnership that fell apart (as in so many businesses, mine included) with bad feelings. Unfortunately, that seems to be behind the negative comments below which began after the partnership broke up. Mathis Murphy is not your average every day salon. It's reputation as among the best is LA is obvious: because the talent is real. Pros: Exceptionally talented artistic and technically advanced hair stylists, Great atmosphere Cons: Parking can sometimes be difficult more

Best Haircut ever. This is one great place. 2/23/2008

My wife and I just tried Mathis Murphy Salon on Abbot Kinney. Now this is different! First the salon is located behind this incredible store. That little trek set me back a little as my wife instantly found a necklace she could not live without. But it's beautiful on her. At the salon Rachel did her hair while Anna did mine. And Kelly shaped my wife's eyebrows. Whoa, we lucked out. My wife looks gorgeous. What a difference. This Rachel came highly recommended, the reason we went to Mathis Murphy, and i can see why. This was a step above anything my wife has ever had done before and believe me, she has gone to some of the most expensive people (as in a $300 haircut!) in Los Angeles. Rachel's a seriously talented stylist. And the color she gave my wife actually seemed to glow. Anna talked me into a new look look. From the comments from my clients she's gonna get a bunch of new customers. Hair has never been my thing but i admit, i really like the look Anna gave me. To me, this is a great cut. Now I'm hooked. I liked this experience. For a guy this place is great. Relaxed and friendly. I'm in advertising so I thought I would give these folks a good rating here on City Search. This is new our favorite salon. we'll be back! Pros: Some of the best stylists in La under one roof. Fun, unpretentious, committed to excellence. Cons: Abbot Kinney's too much fun. You'll eat too much, shop too much, end up looking like a star/ more

Great technical styles and exceptional service 2/17/2008

Despite a review to the contrary, I found my visit with Kyle in late November to be one of my best experiences in a hair salon. He took the time to make me comfortable and patiently explained the details of my new style. Kyle is obviously a skilled hairdresser, as evidenced by the versatility of the cut I received. My cut was artfully crafted so that I can maintain a conservative look for business during the week and can go with an edgier mohawk style on the weekends. In addition, his pleasant and intelligent conversation made me feel at home in a place where the tension between the two partners was palpable. I was told he'd soon be moving to his own salon in Santa Monica, which I've since visited and found to be amazing. Every detail, from the decor to the staff, has been carefully done to enhance the whole experience. I've no doubt that Kyle will soon top the list of salons in Santa Monica. I brave the traffic coming from Valley Village with no regrets, just to maintain the confidence and peace of mind that a great cut from Kyle brings. I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to the new salon on Wilshire; you will not be disappointed. more

Best hairsalon on the Westside 2/6/2008

I used to get my haircut at Neil George in Beverly Hills but since my hairdresser, Sydnee Gabriele, moved to Mathis Murphy Salon, I had to follow her. This salon is way cool with the friendly people and artsy relaxed atmosphere. All the color and haircuts coming out of that salon look fabulous and professional. I think it's the best salon on the Westside. Though, Sydnee is my favorite stylist. I've been going to her for a couple of years now and have never loved my hair as much as I do since she's been cutting it. It's hard to find someone who can cut curly hair and with Sydnee the curlier the better. Any way, if you're in the neighborhood, stop on by and say "hello." more

Great Color, blowdrys and cuts 2/5/2008

Wow. Alot of lipservice for a stylist that I rarely saw at the salon and who recently left on bad terms. Seems fishy to me,anyone else? While Kyle has the skill and tweeky patience for doing great extensions, it is RACHEL LINDY'S work as a colorist, stylist, and blowdry master that really stands out. Djunda does great blowdrys and cuts. Kelly is an amazing eyebrow shaper and the environment and products sold are special, not common and cheap. Good luck to both, but I am sure her work stands on it's own merits, while his will need more development and depth. more

The Amazing Anna 1/24/2008

I have been trusting Anna Citron (and no one else) to my hair for the past few years. She is truly gifted with color. I wake up every day and love my hair. I also love that she is very honest with her clients about when they need to come in and when they don't. More than once she easily could have done my highlights and made money, but instead she sent me home insisting that I wait a few more weeks. Very talented stylist with integrity. more

best salon on westside 1/15/2008

WOW I am so shocked to see these reviews esp. the last one about services going downhill after Kyle left. If anything the energy in salon seems better than ever and services there have always been high quality, best eyebrows, nails and hair. After reading all reviews it looks as though Kyle himself writes them. His work is atrocious, my stylist sits near him and I am in salon every 3 weeks for color. And talk about RUDE that would be him he says hello to no one, never smiles. I thought business owners were supposed to be friendly.I even see him at the gym and he can't even smile at someone who frequents his business. The other owner Rachel is very warm, helpful and talented. She does many people I know thats how I found salon and she sent me to someone there. She is known for the best blonde on westside, doubt she has to do anything free to get clients. I was also told by stylist that any good press he got was result of her she did the work and gave him credit w/out him touching an editor. I don't believe he was good enough to work with editors of magazines. He should spend less time writing things on City Search and more time learning how to do better hair. Pros: beautiful salon,no attitude, quality services Cons: parking more

Lovely, laid-back salon 10/30/2007

I've been searching for a salon since moving into the neighborhood, and a couple of friends suggested I try Mathis Murphy. I made an appointment for a Saturday early evening with Kyle Mathis, one of the co-owners. Everyone at the salon was so warm and welcoming, and there is nothing pretentious about the place or the people. Kyle took great care to give me the cut and color that I wanted. At the end of the appointment, I felt relaxed and pampered, and I felt like my money paid for real results, not just the experience. I'm about due for another cut, and I will most certainly be making another appointment with Kyle. Pros: Welcoming atmosphere and staff; great haircut Cons: Parking is tough on this busy street more

Say goodbye to those pretentious vanity palaces.... 10/9/2007

and enter the comfort of Mathis Murphy. The simple, yet thoughtful design and architecture of the salon creates an atmosphere akin to that of an artists' studio....everyone pursuing meaningful endeavors. Stylists dress in a way that reflects their personal sence of fashion enhacing the creative vibe. All of this I find a refreshing reprieve from the artificial salon image I had become accustomed to. Since its opening, Kyle Mathis has been cutting and highlighting my hair. I have never been happier with my appearance. It feels more like an image makeover than a cut and some color. I travel regularly and receive frequent compliments on my hair. When I tell them that I go to Mathis Murphy in LA, they seem so dissapointed that there isn't a Mathis Murphy in their city too!! more

I few weeks ago I came across this great looking salon on Abbot Kinney.(not so great after all).I decided to give it a try(not a good idea) but anyway I sat in this guys chair after getting the once over by every girl in the salon. Were they looking at my clothes or my shoes or just maybe my hair. Who knows, but it wasnt comfortable.Back to the guy cutting my hair. RUDE! He was the kind of guy who thinks he knows more than everyone around him.(and does not), and my hair.....not so good! Big mistake trying this place. NEVER AGAIN! Pros: pretty orchids Cons: very rude people, lack of talent more
