Small plates galore! 11/20/2007

As my headline says, this place has so many small plates it's a great place to try a little bit of everything. The nice thing is the waitresses/chefs will make anything as a half order if you ask them as well so NO need to order big ol' entrees. Some items were a miss like their Bacon wrapped Oysters which sounded yummy, but were slightly 'undercooked' so the waitress gladly took them back and gave us a free complimentary appetizer from the kitchen for our inconvenience. Otherwise they had excellent (maybe the best) Fried Tofu I've ever had along with splendid Ginko Nuts which were fried to a crisp. more

Terrific sushi bar 5/11/2007

Terrific little find in old town Novato. The day I went it wasn't terribly busy, but bustling at a frisky pace. I was seated near the window with a great view of all the passerbyers shopping in this quaint little town of ours. My first order was of some pristine looking Tuna and Hamachi. Oh my god, it was so amazingly good. Now since I whetted my appetite I was ready for some more so I decided to go with their Sashimi dinner. I was in heaven! Everything was amazingly fresh and the presentation exquisite, truly a great meal. It's a small neighborhood restaurant, but trust me it's worth the visit......or two! Pros: Fresh fish and good selection of vegetarian dishes Cons: Slow for food to come out more

The Roll Masters!!! 5/3/2007

Oh my gosh, the rolls are awesome at this little spot!!! My friend and I must of had at least 10 of their rolls and each one was friggin' awesome!!! The great thing is the chefs here let the true ingredients shine without covering it with all these gooky sauces and stuff. The Spicy Scallop Roll was probably my fave and my buddy loved the Spicy Tuna here. I will definitely be back!!! Pros: The Rolls!!!! Cons: Wait and slow service at times more

Longing on service, makes up for it with food! 9/28/2006

Service needs work, but the food is sublime! Not that the service is terrible, but seems a little rushed. The sushi on the other hand was as good as it gets. If you live in Novato a must try spot! Pros: Great Food Cons: Service and Wait more

Terrific Find 9/21/2006

Best sushiya! 9/6/2006

This restaraunt in a small quiet town becomes a party for the locals. The owner Masa, and Taka the other chef were very helpful and only recomended the the best. !!No rolls and tempura teriyaki stuff!! But they offered the Katsuo which was very tasty with the galic ponzu on top. Not to mention even the rice, lightly vinigared and pearl like shine with a sweet and suttle taste. Ocean trout was fabulous even though I am not a big fan of sake. I would also like to recommend Uzaku, great for desert! And last but not least, their Tako-su. Sour in the begining but sweet from the marinated tako finishing you off with the beuatiful green wasabi tobiko popping in your mouth. If you want them to take you serious, just ask for the best of the day, Nigiri a must, no rolls. and appetizers!!!!!! Huge appetizer selection not to mention, order some sake or beer. Don't eat the food with soda. Pros: The Food, Service. Cons: Nothing. more

One of the best sushi bars in the bay area 7/29/2006

Masa's is as close you are going to get to real japanese sushi. The owner, Masa is a great guy as is his apprentice, its a blast talking with them. As for the sushi, the fish is extremely fresh and presented very well. The kitchen menu is also very good. Some dishes to recommend are the Maguro Ponzu, Uzaku, and pretty much any nigiri sushi. From the kitchen, everyone should try their tempura, chicken tatsuta, and steamed clams with enoki. They have a nice selection of japanese beers, with one brand i've never heard of, called Echigo Beer. Their sake selection is very large too. To get the good stuff, ask either of the chefs for premium sake, which is located right behind the chefs. Pros: Food, very friendly employees Cons: Fridays are super crowded, parking more

The place to go for sushi! 2/24/2006

Excellent Japanese food and nice selection of sake from this little restaurant in Novato. I've eaten at a few Japanese restaurant in my time and the food here is by far one of the top 3 on my list. A little noisy when busy and the service can get slow, but is WELL WORTH IT! Ask for the Steamed Clams in Sake, a must for cold winter nights and the Fatty Tuna is awesome! Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Location Cons: Wait, Crowded more

True to Form Japanese Food 7/25/2005

Probably one of the best Japanese restaurants I been to in quite a while. Awesome food and very vegetarian friendly. The menu here reminds of Tapas, where you order small dishes and share with the table. I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the fish as well as the perfect execution of everything from the sushi bar. Friendly Japanese chefs and waitstaff were an added bonus to a already charming eatery. A couple of must tries were the Steamed Clams with Enoki Mushrooms, Eggplant with Sweet Miso, Beef/Asparagus Rolls and of course anything from the Sushi bar. Pros: Food, Sake List Cons: Parking, Wait, Cramped Seating more

Off the hook! 5/23/2005

Came in on a Friday night and the place was jam packed. Waited for about 15 minutes and was prompptly seated. We tried to get a spot on the bar, but was packed beyond belief. One thing I noticed was everybody seemed to know everybody (kinda like Cheers!). I really dug the neighborhood atmosphere and friendly patrons. We ordered about 5 different appetizer items ranging from Agedashi Tofu, Shumai, Japanese Fried Chicken and a few items from the sushi bar. The Agedashi Tofu was awesome, soft and hot on the inside and crispy and light on the outside. The rolls here are great (I hate places that give you huge rolls) the ones here are perfectly bite sized. The Hamachi/Asparagus roll was to die for and the Spicy Scallop roll was amazing also. We didn't try any of the nigiri sushi, but will definitely be back for more. Pros: Food, Atmosphere Cons: Wait, Parking more

Close to Japan as you can get 5/16/2005

Great neighborhood sushi bar located in Novato, California. A friend brought me here the other night and I was quite impressed with the food. It's great to go to a Japanese restaurant and actually have Japanese chefs and servers work there! There are too many imposters nowadays! Besides the authenticity of this joint the food was rockin'. Everything from the sushi bar was extremely fresh and pristine not to mention the air like crispy Tempura. Pros: Food, Servers, Sake Cons: Wait, Parking more

Great Find in Marin 3/17/2005

I went here the other night and had a wonderful meal. Absolutely the best rolls and nigiri I've had in a long time. The sushi chefs were really cool and the service just perfect. Being Japanese myself I had a wonderful time chatting with the two Japanese chefs, Masa and Taka. Definitely gonna be here again. Pros: Food, Chefs, Parking Cons: Wait more

#1 Sushi in Marin 3/3/2005

This jewel of a sushi bar is a must try for anyone living in Marin County. Very casual and easy going, this place has a great ambiance as well as great selection of hard to find Japanese food items. The owner Masa is a blast to talk with and very friendly. The all Japanese staff is also very friendly and your always welcomed with a smile. Some must tries are the Ankimo (Monkfish Liver) which Masa prepares himself and the Chirashi (Assorted Fish on Vinegared Rice). The rolls are also great as well as the superb nigiri and sashimi. I've tried many sushi bars in Marin and the greater Bay Area and this has to rank in my top 5!!! I would highly recommend reservations on Friday and Saturday nights. Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance Cons: Wait, Parking more

The BEST Neighborhood Sushi Bar in Marin 2/20/2005

After living in San Francisco and most of the Bay Area I have yet to find a neighborhood sushi bar as Masa's on Grant Avenue in Novato. Who would of thought SUSHI in Novato? Both the chefs Masa and Taka are great to talk to and all the waitresses are super friendly. The fish is absolutely fresh and be sure to ask for some of the restaurants specials that are not listed on the menu or the blackboard! I would highly recommend Masa's Maguro Ponzu and his Ankimo! Their Ponzu sauce is simply amazing!!! Pros: Great Sushi, Inexpensive, Friendly Staff Cons: Wait more
