I went to see him 18 yrs ago. He told me i was going to die within. year if he doesn't remove my thyroid. I went for a second opinion and was told i had a perfectly healthy thyroi...

Editorial review from Citysearch 9/11/2012

It's astounding that this guy is stillin business. I was reading the comments below and have had the same experiences. He belittled my concerns, I asked about t3 and armour, he told me I was barking up the wrong tree, ""looking for trouble where there is none"" etc etc. He downright LAUGHED AT ME!!! and told me I read too much and there's to much self diagnosis because of the internet\r Bottom line is I had severe Graves disease and came back the day after my very first visit to take the RAI a year ago. I don't know if that was the right choice or not, but in hindsight, I do not appreciate how rushed I was to destroy an essential organ. \r Now I can't seem to get my weight back down, I definitely don't feel ""myself"" and I'm stuck with the repercussions. \r \r I don't know if it's common practice, but to tell me to take half a pill two days a week rather than just changing my overall dosage seems a bit 18th century. How often do you suppose I actually remember, oh yeah it's wednesday, half pill day. Ughhhh. \r Due to my insurance I had to seek out another thyroid eye doctor, Dr. Kazim, who is supposed to be the best and they want all my records. I have to see him one more time for the sake of time, but I will get all my records and move on. \r this man is a nightmare, steer very clear. As a matter of fact, I'm tempted to change my GP, because he recommended him! more

Worst Doctor Ever 11/28/2011

I have had three appointments with this doctor and now I'm transferring to someone else. For each visit, I waited about an hour, only to be rushed through my appointment. My questions were interrupted, my concerns trivialized. He made inappropriate comments about my apperance--I guess he was trying to do some kind of old-school flirty old man type of thing, but it just made me uncomfortable. I'm a professional young woman with medical concerns and deserve to be treated to a calm appointment and with respect. During my last appointment, people were coming in and out of my room as the nurse drew blood, and another doctor even brought his patient into my room to weigh her. This place is an unprofessional dump and I would recommend it to no one.\r \r more

One of the Best Doctors 8/3/2011

Dr. Barandes came highly recommended by another Doctor. I will simply say that if you are lucky to have Dr. Barandes as your Doctor, you are in the best of care. Dr. Barandes is an expert in his field of Medicine and recognized by other Doctors as such. The staff is helpful and professional. I have noticed some rude patients that were handled with more courtesy than they deserve. I have read some of the critical reviews and find it to be rubbish. more

Pompous, inappropriate and smarmy 6/14/2011

Really, I should have run, not walked after my initial visit with Dr. Barandes. He does not take kindly to normal patient questioning. God forbid you dare to challenge his godlike opinion (in his own mind!). He is inappropriate (making comments about personal appearance) and rushed. He basically told me that I read too much (after I questioned him about T3 levels) and to ""just take your medicine."" Also he will not prescribe Synthroid, only the generic form levothroid. Wonder why this is...hmmmm. As my new doc said, how can someone not prescribe a drug across the board when everyones needs and physiology are different. Good question, but one I will never again waste my time asking this insincere and nasty doc. I'm sorry I wasted so many years seeing this person. more

I concur! stay away. 4/20/2011

i was a patient of Dr. Barandes several years ago and stopped going for many of the same reasons mentioned in these reviews. Unprofessional, inappropriate comments, unsolicited advice, rushed manner, and unnecessary testing. I know for a fact that a thyroid sonogram is big money for endos, and in my case was an unnecessary procedure. De riguer for those physicians looking for a fast buck. When i questioned the doctor about armour thyroid (a natural porcine-derived thyroid hormone replacement) and whether i should switch to that instead of Synthroid, he became obstinate, angry, said he would not prescribe it, and furthermore, would not continue to treat me if i chose to take that route. Then he stormed out. So i walked out myself behind him, but not before having to endure the rude, agressive office staff who, i agree, are completely indifferent to the dozen people still slumped in their seats in the waiting room, waiting...waiting. In closing, if you decide to go to him despite all the rave reviews, and then come to your senses and try another doctor, good luck getting the office to release your records. Recently, I've tried calling several times, then sent a letter requesting the release, and then a follow up call, all to no avail. In response, i got a reminder card in the mail to make an appointment at my earliest convenience. Go somewhere else, please. more

Not a good endocrinologist 1/20/2011

Despite the negative reviews of Dr. Barandes on the web, I stuck with the guy for three visits over the past year. After the last visit, however, I've decided to look for another endocrinologist. I've been concerned about the dosage of my medication on my TSH levels and my health since I was placed on levothyroxine in May of 2010. Today, after spending a good 45 seconds chatting with me, Dr. Barandes told me that I should ""find something else to worry about"" and walked out of the room. This guy is lame. Find somebody better. more

Dr. Barandes is very good. 6/23/2010

Dr. Barandes is one of the best doctors. He is very much in medicine for the right reasons, healing people. The appointments usually run late but I'm convinced it's because he doesn't rush through visits with his patients. Myself and some of my family have been his patients for years. Pros: Old school Dr. who takes his time with you Cons: slow more

Would not recommend 4/19/2010

I was very disappointed with my appointment with Dr. Barandes. Not only did I have to wait over an hour to be called but the staff was not polite. NO one ever says sorry for the wait. After sitting for over an hour, Dr. Barandes does not even listen to your symptoms. I was in and out in less than 5 mins and they were already putting another person in the room and literally kicked me out as the nurse was taking blood. It was the worst experience I ever had at a doctor’s office. It's bad enough when you are suffering with a thyroid disease and have to wait a month for an apt, for what? A doctor to brush you off like you are number or a statistic. Not only were none of my needs addressed, but I left discouraged. Pros: next to metro Cons: everything else more

dangerous 4/23/2009

Avoid this doctor, i was diagnosed with Graves disease, he gave me RAI treatment and ablated my thyroid, he didn't monitor my condition accurately, i was in a thyroid storm (extremely hyper) -he prescribed too high a dose, for too long a time of levoxyl (thyroid hormone replacement), and said that i was crazy that my tests were normal, he advised me to see a psychiatrist, and said ""join the crowd"". Thankfully he went away on vacation, & i saw his associate Dr Edwards at the time, he said my TSH levels were nearly completely shut down and that my medication should have been lowered a long time ago, subsequently this through me into early menopause. Dr Barandes is very dangerous I dont know how he holds a practice, please avoid him. Pros: Zero Cons: delinquent medical treatment & inappropriate behavior more

If you like yourself, find another endocrinologist 6/20/2008

Dr. Barandes is perhaps the most offensive person I've encountered in a while. He has been inconsistent and vague about the advice he's given me, sometimes relying on old lab reports to make recommendations rather than consulting the most recent results. He has also been unprofessional and inappropriate in his interactions with me. He has insulted me directly, often commenting on things about me that have nothing to do with my thyroid condition or health. He has made me very uncomfortable as a female, literally sitting up against me on the exam table once. His staff are aggresively indifferent (if you know what I mean), and seem oblivious to the packed reception room full of patients who are usually waiting for an appointment that was 45 minutes ago (I know this because they complain to each other). There are many other endocrinologists in NYC, and chances are really excellent that any of them will be better than this one. I intend to find out at my next appointment, which will not be with Barandes. Pros: He's not my surgeon. Cons: Awful bedside manner, sexist, disorganized, indifferent staff, long waiting times, lazy medical advice. more

Despicable Endocrinologist and Man 4/26/2008

This MONSTER saw me a few years ago when my thyroid ride was just starting. MARTIN BARANDES takes the cake. An arrogant man who thinks he is G-d, he spent 2 minutes with me and when I became upset, he ushered me out of his office immediately. He ignored my hair loss stating Synthroid did not cause it when I had paperwork from THE MANUFACTURER OF SYNTHROID stating it causes HAIR LOSS. Of course it caused it. For 20 years I had gorgeous hair.He is so bad he should be barred from practicing and I am not joking. If you want to suffer, then book an appt here and the ""charming"" staff will make you sicker than you already feel. Pros: There are other doctors in this world, it was better than prison and it was a sunny day so I walked home through the Park Cons: Cruel man, horrific manner, revolting arrogance, knowledge limited, staff vile, overcrowded room, spends 1 minute with each patient -- HIDEOUS! more

Dr. Martin Barandes 2/5/2008

This is by far, the worse physician I have seen to date. On all my appointments, I had to wait on average about 45-60 minutes...and the staff was rude, unapologetic and inconsiderate to all the patients. This doctor clearly overbooks his day and spends at most - 5-8 min. with his patients. My appts were always rushed as well...and I seemed to be burden to him with just a handful of questions. Dr. Barandes also does not return phone calls, rather--he suggests using a virtual medium to post your inquiries--about your condition...and he will assign someone else to answer your concerns! He does not spend not even 1-3 minutes on the phone with ANY of his patients! Poor customer service, long waits in the reception area, and lack of consideration from the doctor himself...I would never go back to Dr. Martin Barandes nor recommend him to anyone. Pros: ZERO: he supposedly has over 40 yrs of experience in his field--but he doesn't want to share it! Cons: 40-60 min waits for a SCHEDULE appt., indifferent/cold staff, and a doctor that just wants to get paid not provide care! more
