The Market Basket is a very unique grocery store. It is run by the DeMoulas family. There are many pros and cons to shopping at this store.
Let's start with the pros:
1. This is the least expensive food you are going to find in the greater Boston area. I am not kidding. This food is priced well below any other supermarket in the area.
2. This store carries some unique items - for instance, there is nearly an entire aisle devoted to Goya products (and the place is really not that big!)
Now the cons:
1. You are not paying for customer service. When you go to this store, know what you want and be willing to figure out where it is. Hardly any of the staff are able to speak English, even a little, and even when they can, they don't really know where the items are that you are looking for. Also, it seems that most of them have never been trained on customer service. They would not think twice of answering "I don't know" to your question and walking away, rather than trying to figure it out, giving it their best guess, or pointing you in the general direction of someone who can help you.
2. They change around where things are on a weekly basis. There is no rhyme or reason to where you might find something. You basically have to guess, or buy something else.
3. The aisles are too skinny for the carts. This always creates tension between the hundreds of customers trying to get around in the store.
When you go, make sure you are well rested and bring lots of patience with you - you will find very inexpensive groceries!
Enjoy!
