crowded but worth it! 1/27/2011

This is the most reasonably priced market in the area, and I've never had a problem with customer service, either at the desk or correcting a price at the checkout (I notice that the bad reviews on this are both anonymous "guest" comments, and one talks about some store in NH?). For those who have issues with the sawdust they use on the floors for spills -- this is appropriate technology, folks! The Star uses chemicals on the floor that hit my asthma triggers, and probably aren't good for you either. This is a piece of old Somerville, like McKinnon's butcher shop in Davis. It's not putting a gloss on a good solid townie resource. If you care more about form than function, go to the Star's in Porter. If you want good food and friendly faces for a reasonable price, come here and enjoy playing bumper-car(t)s! :) more

Poor Customer Service 7/9/2010

Managers are trained to be "cold blooded" it doesn't matter if you are young or old, rich or poor, even old Greek grandmothers are treated like animals. They should be ashamed! I saw it more than 20 times just standing waiting at the customer service desk. The elderly customers were afraid of bringing something rotten back (with a receipt). This was in Portsmouth, NH and when I spoke to the customers in front of me, they told me "it's always like this, they refuse to take anything back and treat us like animals", one customer told me they could not sleep at night. One customer told me they allow MB to treat them like this because the food was cheaper and they had no choice. Very, very sad. This tells me a lot about Greek people and money! No Soul more

Family Friendly Priced Supermarket 1/28/2010

Good: This is the supermarket to shop at to get the best bang for your buck! Is it no surprise that the store is crowded - all these people are smart! Lowest prices, large selection, and many friendly employees. Huge selections to choose from : Groceries-all have generics/Deli/Fish/Meats/Produce. Ideal for Everyone, Especially Families and Persons of Limited Income. Se Hable Espanol!. Bad: No complaints. Market Basket is the most affordable supermarket I have ever been in! The supermarket is crowded but ALL of the checkout lines are always OPEN! Saving money is what this store is all about. The minor inconvience of overcrowding is Far Outweighted by the $$$ you will save!. Improvements: I am very satisfied with shopping at Market Basket! The only improvement needed is making the deli bigger. The wait is somewhat long and the hard working employees have little space.. Other: Overall, this is the space to save money! It is often crowded, but all these shoppers must know something! Who said food shopping should be fun. The $$$ you save far outweighs the crowds!. more

Good and cheap but way too packed. 7/26/2009

Good and cheap. I wish it was not so packed. People are so desperate for food it's crazy. I only go there sometimes and get couple items. Truereview here to tell you the truth. more

very rude manager 1/2/2009

A old lady was trying to buy a 50 to 60 packet of wheat, which was price @ 79 cent per packet on shelve but at register they rang 99 cent. And she compliant to Manager. And to be surprise manager was very rude to that old lady and told her he will not sell more than 20 packet for that price. The customer service is very poor, they need to be more professional. And make sure you always check price while at register. They put something on shelve and ring something at register. more

Go to Market Basket 11/11/2005

Market Basket can be intimidating at first sight. The expansive parking lot is almost always full, and the store is bustling with tons of customers. The prices at Market Basket are generally so amazing, especially the produce. The selection of products is nearly endless, and they feature many ethnic foods as well. Market Basket carries more household items than does a typical grocery store, although they do not have alcohol. My only complaint is that shopping carts are often in a traffic jam at Market Basket, but if that doesn't bother you, then you definitely should go. more

The third star is for its entertainment factor... 10/16/2005

The Market Basket is a very unique grocery store. It is run by the DeMoulas family. There are many pros and cons to shopping at this store. Let's start with the pros: 1. This is the least expensive food you are going to find in the greater Boston area. I am not kidding. This food is priced well below any other supermarket in the area. 2. This store carries some unique items - for instance, there is nearly an entire aisle devoted to Goya products (and the place is really not that big!) Now the cons: 1. You are not paying for customer service. When you go to this store, know what you want and be willing to figure out where it is. Hardly any of the staff are able to speak English, even a little, and even when they can, they don't really know where the items are that you are looking for. Also, it seems that most of them have never been trained on customer service. They would not think twice of answering "I don't know" to your question and walking away, rather than trying to figure it out, giving it their best guess, or pointing you in the general direction of someone who can help you. 2. They change around where things are on a weekly basis. There is no rhyme or reason to where you might find something. You basically have to guess, or buy something else. 3. The aisles are too skinny for the carts. This always creates tension between the hundreds of customers trying to get around in the store. When you go, make sure you are well rested and bring lots of patience with you - you will find very inexpensive groceries! Enjoy! more
