Happy Hour visit 2/13/2009

A friend and I were very excited to try the Happy Hour here. Our excitement turned to disappointment only because of things that could have easily been avoided. It wasn't crowded at all, but still the bartender was \r more interested in visiting with another couple sitting at the bar. We ordered at appetizer that involved no cooking and took a half hour to be served. A little more attention and a 'hi how are you?' or 'we are so glad you stopped in' would have had us hooked, but nothing. It is a nice, comfortable lounge, but it just wasn't welcoming. more

Better than Ruth's Chris 2/11/2009

We were a little hesitant to try this restaurant after reading a few of the negatives. Sure glad we took the risk. It was last Saturday, so they were busy. We had the 12 oz Filet and the Short Ribs. Along with that we tried the Crabcake and French Onion Soup. Everything was wonderful. Best crabcake and Short Ribs we have had. Service was very good, bartender made us feel very comfortable and we choose to enjoy nour after dinner drinks in the bar instead of the table. Wonderful, romantic evening. We will certainly be back!! If you are in the mood for Filet or ShortRibs or crabcake....you need to try it. The ambiance is far better and much more comfortable than Ruth's Chris, by far! Pros: Filet, Short Ribs, Crabcake, French Onion Soup, cocktails Cons: wine list, and a little pricey more

Best crab cake and 12 oz filet you will ever have 1/3/2009

My wife and 4 friends decided to check out this new restaurant after hearing great things about it. Driving up it looked nice, but nothing like the inside. The inside is old school meets Nuevo; it is something you have to see for yourself. It is very sinatra feeling inside, very warm and inviting but yet you feel like you just walked in to the god father of the mobs mansion. We started off with the owners recommendation of the crab cake and scallops, wow honestly I wanted to order 2 more crab cakes as my dinner, they are as good or better than flying to Maryland, because that is the only place I have had one come close. The scallops were great too, but I'm still thinking about the crab cake and it has been a week since we were there. 4 of us ordered steak, we decided to try 4 different cuts, and the 12 oz filet and the 24 oz bone in rib eye were our favorites. It is so amazing how the 12oz came out. It was a perfect crust on both sides and a perfect center. We were honestly looking at it as if it were art, because we couldn't figure out how the could cook such a thick piece of meat so perfectly, this piece of meat is a must try. Of course the bone in rib eye was more flavorful because of the cut of meat is more fatty, but oh so delicious. The New York was the best I have ever had, but I'm still not a big New York fan. I will stick to the bone in rib eye next time I go back. The owner took care of us all night, he is a very fun guy he really made the night for us. We wish the restaurant well and we will do our part in keeping this gem around. We will be back this week to try some of the seafood entrees. I?m not sure if the owner normally waits on tables or if they were just understaffed, but we will be asking for him next time too. \r \r PS. The bar may be the nicest bar in OC and the ladies he has on staff are stunningly beautiful. The bar is a must for a pre dinner drink and an after dinner drink, very fun upbeat vibe. Pros: Best steak you will find in OC Cons: Its in Orange, this place belongs in Newport Beach, NY or Vegas more

Decent 10/17/2008

Went here for a birthday dinner for parents. Thought we would give this place a try considering the reviews have been somewhat positive. \r \r Service: Very slow, didnt refill waters or pour our wine, and not very communicative. \r \r Food: The food was ok. However, based on the fact that you are paying the same price as Mortons, Mastros and Flemings, id say dont waste your time. The filet doesnt stand a chance against those other players. \r \r I wont be going here again when im footing the bill. :( more

The Best Food 10/10/2008

I ate there tonight with 4 others and we all loved it, I read these reviews just now after I had been there and find a few surprising but most were right on. The place is beautiful, no one, well unless you don't have taste can say anything bad about this place. The food was great, our server Mathew knew the menu well and gave great recommendations. We had the opportunity to talk to the owner, he was very excited about the place and was working very hard to be sure we and the tables around us were happy. It is a very good sign when you see the owner working and a part of a place like this. This is a must try we were all impressed with everything. Three of us had steak and it was cooked perfectly, the Mahi Mahi is a must, my wife ordered it and there is nothing I have ever had that is as good as their Mahi Mahi. The bread pudding for dessert was the best I have ever had, but the apple tart comes in a close second. I am happy I don't have to drive to Newport Beach for a good steak anymore. \r \r -- Pros: Great Food, great prices more

Delicious Happy Hour 9/29/2008

I am always looking for new and interesting restaurants in the area.\r I read the article (and loved the pictures) in Orange Coast Magazine.\r \r The owner met me at the bar and was very welcoming. I was there\r for a light meal, and a cocktail. The happy hour truly is ridiculously\r inexpensive for the quality of food. The entire bill was 42.00.\r \r Let me tell you what I had.. I started with the ""Hef"". A tall drink\r made with raspberry vodka and lemonade. I ordered the 5 sampler \r cheese platter complete with almonds, fig jam, honey and crostini- delicious!\r \r Next came the steak tartare w/quail egg, 5 crostini, and a large side of pommes frites.\r My girlfriend ordered an imported glass of beer.\r \r At this point I was finished, but the food was so interesting I wanted to try more.\r \r I ordered a nice glass of french chardonnay, as well as the french\r dip sandwich (which is full size, and comes with another platter of skinny fries),\r and last but not least, the incredible carne asada filet mignon mini tacos (6) with guacamole.\r The service can be a little lax as there is a minimal staff.\r \r I don't understand why the bar was not full- especially now when gas is obscene, and going home means\r watching the stock market crash, and an uncertain future on t.v. \r \r I have 3 ""TO GO"" boxes in the fridge- cannot wait to experience the leftovers tomorrow. \r \r Watching a football game, enjoying great food and sleek beautiful decor, for a minimal\r investment is the way I choose to spend my evening.\r \r Please try it. See what you think.... more

Save your money 9/28/2008

I read some of the sparkling reviews, and read about this place in the paper so we really were looking forward to trying it. Average food, and not very good service, what more is there to say? There was plenty of parking, as mentioned, and the place did look really nice inside (except for some out place looking paintings). But everything went down hill as soon as we were seated. If you live close by, it might be a neighborhood sort of place to visit, supporting local establishments is the best. But as far traveling down there again, forget it. We'd rather drive down to Charlie Palmers or Ruth Chris'. Pros: Parking Cons: Food, service, no one else was in there more

Nice dining in an area that truely NEEDS it. 8/26/2008

My husband and I went there for diner and had a wonderful time. Parking - excellent, service - excellent, food - excellent. Will go again. We will now spend our money between Manhattan Super Club and Nieuport 17th. Both places know how to serve a great steak! Pros: Ceasar Salad - and any steak on the menu Cons: nothing I can think of.... coming from a picky diner. more

Disappointed 8/25/2008

Made a reservationa 3 weeks before our anniversary. When we arrived at the restaurant they had lost it, but could accomodate us. We had eatten often at La Brasserie so we were looking forward to the reopening and curious about the redecoration. Looks like they ran out of money by the time they got to the outside. They did O.K. with the inside, but the outside looks awful. Our food wasn't even average. My husband ordered the short ribs and said the ones I cook at home were a lot better. I had the stuffed pork chop. It was undercarmelized and had almost no flavor. I don't know who these people are who are raving about this place. I suspect they are employees. My review is it is way over priced for the quality of food and service. They don't even have linen on the tables. When they found out it was our anniversary, they said Happy Anniversary. Pros: Parking was great and car was returned quickly. Very nice Valet Cons: All the rest more

Wow 7/15/2008

After reading nothing but good reviews about this restaurant I decided to try it out with some friends. All I can say is the reviews were right on. It was exactly as promised.\r \r The design on this restaurant is really cool. They have a few different dining rooms that are each decorated differently, but they're all really cool. The food is FANTASTIC. Everything tastes really fresh and delicious. We were all blown away by their steaks and pretty much everything else.\r \r Can't wait to go back. more
