Mammoth Mountain Ski Area

Simply put, I've skied most of the top 10 listed and to be honest Mammoth is so much better than any Aspen Mt. it's not even close. Sure Ajax is longer top to bottom but there's nothing there like the top of Mammoth. Jackson is great but talk about a nightmare to get to, and if you're not a quad black dimond skier, good luck. There's no other place like Mammoth, 20 ft of snow can fall in 3 days, then you can be skiing in deep powder on blue ski days that you think someone painted. Simple drive from LA, or any place in Southern Cal and I'd drive right through Tahoe any day to get to Mammoth. The drive along 395 in either direction, from LA or Reno is unreal in beauty. Come spring time you get all the desert bloom, then unreal skiing. And the icing on the cake? The last 2 seasons I've skiied on my birthday which is the 1st day of summer, and on the 4th of July, and the conditions were amazing. Then you come off the hill and hang out at the many lakes and or boat down the road at Crowley, or just take a 2 hour drive through Tioga pass to Yosemite. So if you're looking not only for great skiing, cause the mountain will challenge every level of ability without boring you, you also get the adventure off the hill as well. No other resort offers so much to do in nature on and off the hill. If you ever get the chance, ski it in summer when you can do all the other things around the area as well, take 5 days and do something different everyday and ski each day as well. Oh, as for night life and things to do in town, it's ok, but you'll run out of things to do there in a hurry. Not a Aspen social scene, but wilderness like no other. Pros: A mountain for every level, snow almost year round, wonderful people, easy to get to. Cons: Weekend crowds, bad storms if you get caught in one. Limited night life. more

I'm from the Ice Coast and take one monumental trip out West each year and last March I fell in love with Mammoth! We got a foot of snow every day we were there (7 ft total)! I'm an easy going snowboarder but because of the powder I rode trails I would NEVER ride here. I rode chutes, rode chair 23, did the cornice thing (not gracefully - but went for seconds), trees etc... I would come back each year. There are so many lifts you can get any where. I think the longest we waited on line was 8 min. The staff was helpful with directions - they knew how to get you where you wanted to be. And the deal was sweetened with a great center of town with a great shuttle system. Experience it for yourself. Worth the trip and I'm coming from New Jersey! As a former Bay Area resident and long time Mammoth skier I take exception to the reviews contention that Mammoth is too far from the Bay Area. If you take Highway 88 instead of I-80 you can get to Mammoth in about 5 hours from most of the Bay Area. Still to long a drive you say? Well, there's a litle place called Kirkwood about halfway between the Bay Area and Mammoth that breaks up the drive quite nicely. By the way, when the crowds are bad a Mammoth, there's a litle area called June Mountain about 20 minutes away that will still have zero lift lines. OK, you're not going to scare yourself on any 45 degree slopes at June but it has some great advanced runs served by high-speed lifts. And your Mammoth ticket is good at June. more

As a former member of a ski team I've had the opportunity to ski every major ski resort in North America. If I were to rate ski resorts based soley on terain and conditions I would have to rate Mammoth No. 1. The high elevation and abundant snowfall make for consistantly excellant conditions and a long season. With regard to the terain they have one of the most accurate rating systems. Expert is expert and advanced is advanced, not some over hyped intermediate run. Although there have been major improvements in mammoths night life and lodging, it still lags behind other major destination resorts. If skiing is your first priority then mammoth is for you. I have lived in Mammoth my entire life. I grew up there and have always had a blast skiing there. I have never had any problems with anything. The snow is always great; there's something for everybody here. Also, the town is a great place to come and visit, it's small and homey, I would recommend it to anyone. The restaurants all have great food and most of the locals are friendly if you don't mess with them. Respect the locals please! They are serving you! Mammoth is incredible. Super long runs, great snow, fast lifts and lift lines and an awsome park that caters to skiiers and boarders alike, Mammoth is my top choice. The nightlife used to be dim, but the new village has sparked that up. At about 4 hours driving from S.D., it's definitely worth to stay a while. Great scenery with Yosemite next door. Even on a crowded day, I have often found myself alone on a run. Plus there is always the backside to explore. Certainly a worthwhile trip to take. I live in the L.A. area & I've purchased a Mammoth pass for the last 2 seasons. I love it there. I don't go locally anymore cuz I had an incident with a 6', 200 lb, guy... my legs took most of the impact from his board. There are too many wreckless people locally so now my only option is the open runs in Mammoth. The -easy & main- trails get somewhat crowded during holiday weekends but thats when you go explore other trails. The cool part about Mammoth is that there are plenty of other trails! Been skiing for 40 years all over US, Canada,SA. and Europe and I feel Mammoth is one of the most overrated areas in the US. In the middle of nowhere, hard to get to, lousey Apre-ski, crowded on weekends/holidays, lift system gone astray, poor parking program and average mountain food. more

I have skied in all of the major resorts in North America and overall Mammoth is the best overall and getting better. The only down sides in the past were lite night life & shopping and a long drive. The new village is helping with the night life and there is an airport expansion on the books; but it's a ways off. Nevados, (accross from the village), has the best food in town and Dublins in the village is great for night life. The mountain itself is excellent skiing and the lines thin out fast once you get away from the base area. For top of the line accommodations try Snowcreek. Ps Just about every year they seem to add something new to the ski area. For 2004/2005 it's a new high-speed chair by Canyon Lodge. Pros: snow quanity, grooming, great runs more

This mountain is one of my favorite ever. You can pretty much get anywhere you want without alot of travelling with lifts. The terrain parks are great because they got hits to warm up on and HUGE hits to build up to. The half-pipes are decent but not like Breckenridge (which otherwise kinda sucks). Mammoth has decent blue skiing, and fun black terrain. This mountain is just big enough to have something for everyone. It's only drawbacks are that it could be a little bigger, and the icy winds at the top of chair 23. Other than those small drawbacks it is one of the best resorts in the US. BE WARNED however, this mountain will soon suck because they are turning it into a major resort (village and all).....this will bring idiots, crowds, and $20 lunches like everywhere else. It is well worth the long haul from S.F. or LA. We travel from OH. It is a skiers location, not a glitzy night club stop. Snow is more predictable than in Rockies, and the 3500 skiable acres make for a lot of variety. Mammoth really caters to snowboarders too, but their areas are separated, so there is not a high degree of mixing of skis and boards. I Love Mammoth. The slopes are great and always well kept. The people are very friendly and lessons (good for first timers or children) are available almost all the time. The city of Mammoth Lakes is also a plus. It is very quiet and has plenty of places to stay close to the Lodges. Personally, I like Canyon Lodge over the Main and Juniper Springs because it is less crowded and closer to my favorite runs. Mammoth is kind of a drive, but it is worth the trip. Over the years I've had the opportunity to ski Utah, colorado and montana and by far Mammoth is the best, the mountain offers runs for every type of skier, and they done a great job of accommodating skiers and snowboarders, over the years its lost that small town attraction that made you feel safe and comfortable, but I can deal with it because Mammoth is a great place to ski. more

I first skied Mammoth Mtn. in the early 60's when it was still possible to ski the whole mountain in one day. Over the last 40 years the mountain has become my favorite in No. America. I can take an easy run in front of the lodge or I can head back into the canyons away from everyone. It has a run for everyone. I only ski during the week now so it is sometimes hard to find someone to ski with. I love it, I love it, I love it. A GREAT PLACE TO SKI. more
