Large selection of sushi and sashimi. Besides the ruby slices of tuna and rose quartz salmon, they had something called "snowy sushi", which was an opaque white cuttlefish with an unusual texture that makes you want to try one more just to be sure.\r \r And the chunks of roast duck? My friend had been dreaming about returning to that duck for a long time.\r \r Oh, banana-length tempura shrimp, I will be dreaming about you...\r \r While the food is luxurious, the ambiance is fair, not grandiose, not too tacky but comfortable. The maître d' gently instructed the hostess where to seat a family with a crying baby. This was done very discretely, without hostility, sparing diners from agitation and family from embarrassment.\r \r I've been in too many Chinese and some Japanese buffets with wait staff unable to conceal what I perceive to be either contempt or an over-eagerness to get rid of us quickly...eat, make it snappy, then get the hell out. The Makino waitress did not at all give me that weird vibe.\r \r You will pay $20 for your meal. You will leave completely satisfied, with no lingering doubt as to whether you might have made a better choice. That, itself, is uncommon today. more

Excellent Japanese Buffet 1/16/2011

I was recently at Makino Japanese Buffet to celebrate a 90th birthday party! Kudos to the hosts who picked a terrific place. The food was excellent, with a large selection of excellent sushi and sashimi, and many other choices of food for those who don't eat raw fish. The desserts were also terrific. The staff was very helpful and the party was a great success. I would highly recommend you try this buffet. You won't be disappointed, but you might eat too much! more

It's really good food considering it's a buffet. The sushi is actually fresh and tasty! Buffets weird me though because I'll pile mounds of food on my plate and the sushi chefs will give me this look like "save some for the rest fat ass". Overall it's good, I recommend it. more

Was there with a client and enjoyed the overall experience. They have a large variety from sushi, Chinese and hibachi. I only had the sushi and the ratio of fish to rice was good. They were not quick in replacing the sushi and at one time half of the selection was empty. The quality could have been beteer but overall good. The price was very reasonable. more

I had been in this restaurants many times and the buffet was great, but last time and today noticed the quality is not as good as in the past. Hope they will improve more

Best Sushi-Sashimi Buffet in Broward 8/30/2008

I love this place, but maybe I've been lucky. More on that later.\r \r Talk about selection of sushi and sashimi! 50 or so varities, plus a load of salads and appetizers. Add a 2 dozen hot dishes plus a hibachi grill where you can order anything your heart desires, and you have a GREAT place to eat for right around $17. (The pricing in these buffets varies according to day of week, with weekends being more expensive by a dollar or two than a weekday.)\r \r I've never had a bad meal here, the only problem is one of self-control. You want to eat a lot for the money--sure, but the food is soooo good, that it's hard to stop going back for seconds and thirds of your favorites.\r \r There's a dessert bar plus not-found-anywhere-else ice creams like bean and green tea.\r \r I've read other reviews of customers complaining about brusk, rude waiters, but hey, this is a buffet. All they're supposed to do anyway is clear your plates from the table when you finish. They usually wait until you leave the table for more food to do it, so there's little interaction. If they smile and really are pleasant, then it's okay to leave a tip. In a restaurant like this, 5% is nice and 10% is generous.\r \r I've also read a couple reviews reporting insects. I never saw any, and have never been grossed out by anything in the restaurant, including the bathrooms which are kept reasonably clean.\r \r This is a GREAT VALUE and great food, especially if you fancy fresh sashimi and sushi. This restaurant has a ""sister"" restaurant--Kyojin-- owned by cousins on the east side of Broward County (Makino is on the west side, on University in Sunrise). more

I love Makino's. They had a fire several weeks ago and I can't wait until they are open again. The food is great, always nice and fresh. If you or your friends don't like sushi, there is a lot they can eat. Besides the food in the buffet area (breaded shrimp, chicken dishes, vegetables, spring rolls, etc ) they have a hibachi cook and a grill cook to make stir fry or grilled ribs, chicken, salmon, or beef. The staff is friendly and the place is always clean. Someone always seems to be walking around wiping things down. more

Very Happy Priced Right 7/6/2007

One of the best Japanese Buffets I have been to. The Sushi was so good I had to make myself stop eating it. The kids loved the marshmellows and chocolate fountain, as well as the fish pond. The service was great and the rest of the food was excellent as well. It was way better than another local Japanese Restaurant close by (Kyojin) and cheaper as well. I definately recommend. However...don't go when it is pouring down rain. The parking lot floods and you could be walking in a foot of water. Pros: Fish Pond, Service, Chocolate fountain, Great tasting Food! Cons: Flooded Parking, Variety of Food more

Great place for lunch or dinner always fresh food, good sercice, great price no problem with children more

Great Place, great food. 10/11/2005

My family and I LOVE to go to Makino. If you Love japanese food then you WILL be in HEAVEN. The food is all buffet style and all of it is delicous. You can choose from Hibachi (which you pick what they put in it and cook it right there for you), mild sampling of regualr foods such as rice, spring rolls, and other assorted foods, or Sushi and sashimi. Everything I've ever had there has been wonderful. Even my kids love to go! There is a great little fish pond for them to stare at while i fill their plates with food for them. Dont hesitate to go. You'd expect it be pricey with all the great food, but its rather affordable. I recommend this place to all my friends! Pros: great food, ok service, lots to choose from Cons: getting there, only japanase food, restrictive open hour more

Great Japanese Buffet! Cheap Price! 6/5/2005

after spending a lot of time of chinese food, i decided to change it around and have a go at this japanese buffet, which i discovered when one of my friends recommended to me. i started with their seaweed salad with cucumber. then switched to their sashimi - salmon, tuna, white tuna, and so on. and next to that are many different types of sushi. their ""volcano"" specialty is my favorite. and tempura shrimp are great try as well. after all, the rum raisin ice cream with fruit on top finalized my great day. superb! more
