We have eaten at Maddy's many times & have always enjoyed it, but last night was a real disappointment. There were nearly 20 of us, so, as a courtesy, we had called the day before to let them know that there would be a large group coming. We got there about 7 p.m. and it was hotter in the restaurant than it was outside - I'm talking about 90+ degree weather. Then when we went up to order, we learned that they don't have beer any longer (you can bring your own, so someone made a run to the beer store - I was told by another patron that they forgot to renew their license. Don't know if that's true, but if it is, that's kind of pathetic!), they were out of potato salad (one of the reasons I go there - it's delicious!), and out of mac n' cheese. You just shouldn't run out of those side dishes at a bbq joint! The ribs were delicious as ever, but my piece of corn was one of those little frozen ears - not very good at all! After dinner we moved to the outside deck where it was cooler. About 9:45, I went in to get a glass of water and was told they didn't have anymore paper cups, so I asked for a regular glass & was told that they were getting ready to close!!! I was with a large group who had just spent a lot of money, but I was refused a glass of water! Unbelievable! And, although the music is always good, it is so loud for such a small place, that it's difficult to talk to your table-mates. Another reason for going outside! I'm sure I'll go back to Maddy's at some point, but there are several new bbq places opened in the Decatur area that I now have a good reason to give a try! more

We had heard this place was good so we bought a Groupn to try it. As we walked in, we noticed the health rating was an 80 B. This alone almost made us walk out but we bought this Groupon and heard it was so good. We ordered ribs, baked beans and potato salad. Potato salad was made with sour cream and bacon and was VERY good. Bake beans are plain, no meat. Ribs were the nastiest ribs we had ever put in our mouths! So much fat and grissle we could barely find any meat at all. The grease was nauseating! We ate 3 ribs and felt like we would be sick so we walked out. We will never return to this disgusting excuse for a barbecue restaurant. Whoever likes this place, must not have ever had good barbecue. YUCK!!! more

one of my absolute favorite places of all time! order the rib sandwich! its a half rack of ribs between some bread ;o) only $5 !!!! I am VERY picky about my food. i have had it all and i can honestly say that these ribs are the BEST!!! and for only 5 bucks! also every night they have live blues which is almost always excellent! I eat there every week and the food never fails to impress me! trust me and get the rib sandwich! THIS WILL BE YOUR FAVORITE PLACE Pros: THE ABSOLUTE BEST RIBS IN ATLANTA!!! This little hip blues and barbeque joint is located down the street from Emory campus. I was just visiting Atlanta and the Decatur area because I had friends and family who lived here. When I asked my friend to take me to the best barbeque in her area, she drove me straight to Maddy's without a second thought. I would recommend trying the ribs or the rib sandwich. The stew is also delicious as well as the phenomenal fire baked beans. Thankfully, sweat tea is on tap. It is definitely a southern barbeque joint. Their use of a rub instead of drowning the ribs in barbeque sauce was a welcomed change from other barbeque joints that I have been to. This place gets a thumbs up from this Texan. I love Maddy's, their ribs fall off the bone and are not full of gristle and fat. If you go at night you can listen to some live blues too, always a treat. Pros: Great BBQ place Cons: can get a little loud more

Stopped in on a Friday to pick-up and order, but decided to eat in instead as there was this band the Rick Carter Project that just blew me away. They sounded like Eric Clapton when he was with John Mayall. Outstanding thought I'd been transported back in time!!! The great ribs, beer, and music made for an incredible night. Maddy's Rib & Blue Joint has the best BBQ in Atlanta! They have a great atmosphere, amazing BBQ, live music and it a really good value. Pros: Great Atmosphere, Food & Prices Cons: Nothing more

This is my favorite BBQ restaurant in all of Atlanta! I will drive to Decatur to get BBQ from Maddy's Rib & Blue Joint. It has an awesome atmosphere with live music. I recommend it to anyone. Pros: Great BBQ & Live Music Cons: Nothing more

I've been in Atlanta for 18 years and sampled many Q joints, and this one takes the cake. Luckily for me, I don't have to travel too far to sample their awesome ribs. \r I like my ribs dry so I usually have sauce on the side - YUMMY! They've smoked the ribs so well that the flavor is in the bone. \r My only complaint is that the side orders are way too small. The potato salad is yummy, but I often won't order them because there's no way I'm paying money for a teaspoon of food. \r more

We love the food at this place, however it's a little difficult for me to enjoy a meal on site with all the racket. We've actually eaten at the restaurant 4 or 5 times, but the live music was so bad that we just started carrying out. Being a KC transplant, I like my ribs. I have to say I was fairly impressed with their ribs. The meat fell off the bone at one end of the ribs and ended up a little over cooked on the other side. The potato salad was good enough that I would kick my mother in law for a bowl. My only issue was that they had no fries on the menu. In KC you gotta have fries with BBQ. It's not much to look at, but hey, it's a rib joint! And the ribs rock! Apparently the owner is a cousin of the owner of Fat Matt's, but Maddy's has definitely got the best ribs and sauce, hands down. As an Emory student who is always broke and hungry, I find Maddy's to be a godsend. The barbeque is always cheap and especially filling which leaves me money for some cold beer! Be sure to check out the monthly $2 bottle beer specials, which are always top-shelf brews such as Guiness, Red Stripe, Shiner Bock, and Warsteiner. Every night there is free live entertainment featuring local blues/rock bands. There is a full deck for outdoor dining as well if you would rather hear the music at a more managable volume. The only downside is the first-come first-serve seating, which can go quick on Friday and Saturday nights so come early to grab a table for the evening. Bonus: The service is quick and the staff is always polite and accomodating. A great barbeque restaurant and a great time. Okay, I admit this is my first review but I could'nt let the review by triciadunlap to be taken as a non-bias review. Maddy's has been one of my favorite spots for a couple of years now. The ribs are fall off the bone, the potato salad is as good as I have found, and the staff is always prompt and friendly. As for the lack of smoke, my wife definitely knows when i have snuck off to Maddy's because i come home with that great barbecue smell. Maddy's is always my choice for a great barbecue meal and a good time. I hope you folks out there try it and enjoy it like I have. more

Visited this place after work on Friday 7/27, in a word AWFUL. I went there based on the previous reveiws and I was soooo disappointed. There was not even a hint of the smoke that you should smell at a good rib joint. I was horrify to see ribs roasting on a grill! But.. I went ahead and tried it, big mistake. I ordered the combo with ribs and chopped chicken and a side of potato salad. The ribs tasted like they had been boiled and then grilled, the chopped chicken was full of fat and the potato salad had a hard crust like it was refrigerated without a cover. * Also there management might want to think about asking the employees not to sit on the counter during business hours.. very unprofessional and unsanitary. But... I digress. All I know is I'll never ever spend my hard earned money there again. more

""Good barbeque"" is a subjective concept, of course, but, for me, Maddy?s has the right idea. Reasonable prices. The barbeque itself is neither too dry, nor too soupy, and the sauce is savory with more heat than sweet. I?m a creature of habit with barbeque, so I haven't tried a lot of their menu, but I can highly recommend the pulled pork sandwich. (If you aren't a pork fan, they do a chicken version that is quite nice too.) If you like garlic, you can?t miss the potato salad, which is a garlic-y delight. I also pony up the 25 cents for extra sauce, as I?ve discovered that dipping a bit of potato salad in it just takes it to a whole 'nother level. The killer beer specials, free soda refills, and hip and friendly staff are the icing on the Maddy's cake. \r \r One or two caveats, (but nothing that should prevent you patronizing this fine establishment). Parking is really really bad. The lot is small, and seems to have suffered earthquake damage. The dining area is intimate and they have live blues, so come early on a weekday if you don't like crowds and noise. Also, the building might look a little funky and run-down for some folks, but keep in mind that you aren?t going to find this caliber of barbeque in a place that looks like Chili's. I get tired of going to mediocre bbq places. I mean this is the South and the Atlanta area really does a poor job in representing good southern bbq. Maddy's is just okay, which to me is unacceptable. Now, if you think Fat Matt's is a great bbq place, then you will probably like it here. Apparently, one of the owners here used to work at Fat Matt's which would explain why the food is just decent at best. The pork is dry, the ribs (when they have them) are not smoked properly, and the sides are a joke. As with most bbq places these days, the prices are on the high end. Save your time and money and go to Harolds if your looking for good bbq in the Atlanta area, even Daddy D'z is much better than this. PLEASE SOMEONE OPEN UP A GOOD BBQ PLACE IN THE CITY!!
