Best Coffee in Manhattan...period. 1/28/2009

As a bonafide coffe snob & ex-PacNW downtown Portlander who's returned to NY - trust me when I say this is the best coffee in NYC. I know, I've looked everywhere. The mocha is liquid heaven. The food is fresh, creative and fantastic. The atmosphere is simple, pure, espresso house. Do yourself a favor, ditch Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts and have some real cofffee. I am a huge Stumptown fan, but Macchiato gives a neck in neck run for the money. Pros: best coffee in town, hot barista staff Cons: only one location! more

Great coffee - great pastries 2/22/2008

We have quickly become regulars at this local coffee shop. Hands down, beats starbucks any day of the week! Pastries are great and the salads are yummy and hearty. Every neighborhood should have a coffee shop like this place.... Pros: great coffee, food & atmosphere more

""Coffee as it Should Be"" 2/14/2008

I am a regular at this coffee Bar. Every morning I share 5 minutes with the other customers that are willing to wait for a ""proper cup of coffee"". What amaze me, is how the guys behind the bar, remember what coffee their regulars drink (and we are many). There is always a small line, but like a good New Yorker when I see a line I know that there is a good thing at the end of it. Try the ""Chocolate croissant"". Keep the good job guys. Pros: Short line = Worth waiting Cons: Need to be little patient!!! more

Best Espresso Around 1/14/2008

I don't drink a cup of coffee, java, or joe. I drink espresso; only espresso. Macchiato faithfully produces a superb espresso, promptly, in a proper demitazza. Their espresso is smooth, neither sour nor bitter, and has a dark and thick long lasting crema. I have not found a better espresso in Manhattan. Pros: Best espresso in Manhattan more

Meh... 7/23/2007

My boyfriend and I went into Machiatto Expresso Bad one rainy day to get some coffee and breakfast. I live in the neighborhood and had heard great things about it. While I agree I would LOVE to have one of these instead of Star-yucks on the corner, I didn't quite understand the hype. The staff was talking really loud when it was such a small, quiet place (about wanting to go home I might add). When I ordered, the barista acted like there was a huge line in back of me when there was no one. He didn't even let me get in that I wanted a cheese danish. I had to ask 3 times for it. My boyfriend's bagel looked good and fresh, and the organic coffee was OK...a little over roasted. My cheese danish was delicious, I just wish, like the rest of their pasteries, save the croissants, it wasn't so small! I guess I like my pastries on the big side, but I'm a 5'7 115 pound girl and can't imagine someone bigger and hungrier than me being satisfied with those tiny pastries! Then again, I guess Machiatto approaches them as something to enjoy with their coffee rather than to fill you up, which in this day and age is admirable. Pros: Tasty food, good coffee, quiet atmosphere Cons: Rushed service, tiny pastries! more

delicious!yum! 7/3/2007

I was on my way to work and I stumbled along this place, and am very pleased that I have! The coffee was delish and the pastries were too! I am def going to go back for my morning cup of coffee. more

a tourist/pretension/attitude-free coffee spot 3/13/2007

as one of the many bleary-eyed new yorkers who cannot begin the day without a cup of coffee, i have been quite lucky to have very accidentally stumbled upon macchiato bar. after only three visits, the staff knew my drink and made it with a smile. not only is it refreshing to be greeted cheerfully in the morning, it is also quite lovely to enjoy a cup of coffee that doesn't taste like the bottom of the urn it was brewed in. i am also impressed at their efficiency: given the long lines in the morning and that there are only 3 people behind the counter (2 of whom make the drinks), the line moves swiftly and with little confusion, which is more than i can say for other establishments, namely one whose name rhymes with ""car-trucks."" my only gripe is that they are only open until 6pm and not open on the weekend. otherwise, i have nothing negative to say. more

Glorious! 12/13/2006

Some coffee snobs post that NYC can't brew a good cup of espresso because the water here is too ""hard."" That's BS. I've just finished a Mochaccino from Macchiato, and it was perfect?rich and well-balanced, with no sour notes and most importantly, no burnt tar taste from over-roasting like the mermaids do. The only reason NYC is not in the coffee valhalla along with Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, is that Macchiato hasn't been here as long as the other towns' stalwarts. There are some good coffee shops in Williamsburg, but this is just as good, and beats anything I've had in Manhattan.\r \r I also want to put in a good word for the grilled veggie sandwich, which was awesome. Fresh, well-spiced, and the ciabatta was perfect.\r \r Lastly, the service was great?cheerful, knowledgeable and efficient. Don't expect fast food?this stuff is made to order?but it was as fast as can be reasonably expected. If anyone from Macchiato is reading, please know that a good review from me is a rarity, and I usually post here to bitterly complain about mediocre places that the Citysearch herd heedlessly overrates. Pros: New York City, meet good espresso. Good espresso, meet New York City. more

I LOVE Macchiato!!! 10/23/2006

I work near Macchiato and am SO happy a descent coffee shop and outstanding alternative to Starbucks has opened just next store!!! The service is great, the coffee is outstanding, the food is pretty good, the prices are even better. My whole office loves this place and goes multiple times a day! Pros: Great coffee, service and prices Cons: Not enough seating, small lunch menu more

Some of the best coffee in New York 10/16/2006

This is the place Midtown Manhattan has needed in forever. I both live and work in Midtown East and never had a place to go for REAL espressos. The staff is extremely nice and their place deserves recognition. Pros: Excellent coffee, good food, convenient location Cons: Limited lunch menu, little seating space more

Best Expresso 10/15/2006

Excellent expresso and great pastries. This is a must try of your way to work. They have quick service and are located right near grand central, i ussually stop by in the AM on my way to work. Pros: quick service Cons: some times a line more

FINALLY!!! A fresh approach to lunch & coffee!!! 9/7/2006

The sandwiches are absolutely delish!!! And not wrapped in cellophane!! The coffee is magnificent as well as the hot chocolate. Don't forget to have a delictable cookie or pastry for dessert. It is not your everyday coffee house...it is a refreshing alternative to the overpriced corporate coffee mills. Give it a try, trust me, you'll go back for more!! Pros: Heart of Midtown, fast, friendly service Cons: There aren't any more

BEST ESPRESSO EVER, GREAT ATMOSPHERE, FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART! 9/7/2006

I went to cafe Macchiato while in the city on business (I am in 3x per week), I found this place from a colleague that told me that if I want the best coffee in NY to go to this Espresso Bar. I have traveled the world over and had many a cup-of-joe, and this was not an ordinary experience, the people were polite, accommodating and so generous with free samples of all fresh baked products. I sat looking out a huge window and read the NY Times while watching this place boom. I can only hope that more people will try this hidden treasure. We have lunches quite often at the office and I hope that they will soon deliver (if they are not already). I did not want to let it go un-noticed that the place was also IMMACULATE - and for NYC that is a miracle on its own. Friendly staff, outstanding coffee, sandwiches that were made to order and the NYC feel makes me feel proud of being a New Yorker especially coming up on the 5 year anniversary of 9/11, it is so nice to see a establishment that cares to bring NY what they need a safe place to have coffee, healthy food and kindness - A RARE COMBO AND VERY RARE FIND!! TRY THIS PLACE!!!!! Pros: WONDERFUL COFFEE, PASTRIES AND ATMOSPHERE! Cons: I COULD NOT FIND ANY - IT WAS SO CLEAN!! more

If you miss European espresso, Macchiato will get you there like the Supersonic Concorde. 9/6/2006

This stylish cafe trounces the Seattle mermaids that surround it. If you love good espresso, the owner pours it perfectly himself. You would never consider putting sugar in your Cotes du Rhone. Likewise, it would be a shame to sweeten this espresso and miss all the flavors an aficionado can skillfully release from the brown bean. Pros: The owner loves what he does. Cons: There's only one location so far. more

Fantastic addition to the neighborhood! 9/6/2006

Macchiato is a wonderful addition to midtown. The staff is great and friendly, service is fast and most important the coffee and food is fresh and delicious. Best cappuccino I have found in in the area and the best part is everything is baked there fresh. The pastries are so rich and flavorful. Lunch is terrific as well. Fresh bread..... everything made to order.... what could be better? I can't eat another pre-made sandwich! It's a really nice atmosphere, very loungy and inviting. I wish there could be a Macchiato on every corner instead of Starbucks. Pros: Ambience, Quality, Service more
