WHAT A FIND! 6/8/2011

What a find! This place is very homey and very much like a French countryside inn. Great service. Good and reasonably priced wine. We both loved our entrees (coq au vin and baked salmon) and the Malbec. Good desserts, too. Reasonable prices and nice portion sizes. Will definitely plan to return. more

ROMANTIC FRENCH RESTAURANT 6/8/2011

Yummy desserts, and really hearty main dishes make this a place I'd like to return to. The staff was attentive. I had the scallops, which tasted fresh. My dining companion had the beef stew, which he liked very much. The French country decor made this Midtown space feel warm and cozy. more

TOP-NOTCH-EVERYTHING 6/5/2011

The food here is top-notch- everything that I tried from the scallops, to the duck and prime rib was excellent. The souffle was baked perfectly and came out looking as beautiful as a souffle should be, but i felt that this dessert, in general, was over-rated. Service was flawless. more

Where was the delicious French Food??? 5/31/2009

What a disappointing experience again... I am French, fond of good French food, have been to many refined restaurants and could not begin to fathom how this place remains notorious. \r \r I will being with the positive comments: \r The service is impeccable, the high class hostess and waiters are very attentive and the ambiance is undeniably French. Yet this is pretty much where the resemblance stops and I am sorry for not being able to be more supportive of a business that I was hoping to be the Embassy of good French food. \r \r The food (since this is what it's all about) is highly disappointing, with no flavour surprise. I gave La Vie en Rose two shots before writing this. \r I visited it two years ago, had the frog legs. These were way too oily and did not really taste like frog legs. Apart of the creme brulee, there is really nothing I recall of the menu. There were four of us and none of us really thought the food was worth the price. Yet, I did give it another shot recently (quite honestly more because I had a gift card for la vie en rose than because I wanted to go). \r \r My husband took a mushroom soup while I had a French onion one. The mushroom soup may as well have been taken from a Campbell soup can while the onion soup had no particular flavor... Let's be honest the onion soup at the soup plantation when they have it (I am pondering my words) is way way better than the one I had at la vie en rose, how surprising!\r We had two other appetizers... the mussels which were just ok, being very weak in seasoning and a pate de campagne plate. How can I say this right without sounding like I am bashing La vie en rose... This is the WORST pate I have ever had, it did not seem fresh, the taste was like ""gone"", even its dark color looked like it had been in the fridge uncovered for a few days, it had obviously not been freshly sliced - the only good thing in the plate were the cornichons (French pickles) and the Saint Agur cheese. \r \r Entrees: my husband chose a chicken cordon bleu and I had a Tournedos with a lobster tail. He did not like what he had (no real flavor, tasted fried) yet said that the gratin potatoes were good with which I would agree. My tournedos was served with one carrot, mashed potatoes, a few long green beans and gratin potatoes - none of which seemed to be originally of good quality) - the meat was cooked the way I wanted it but the whole thing had no particular taste. \r \r Yes, they do try to make it look like very good food with an inventive presentation but the taste is way below the French standards I have been used to. I am not fond of American chain restaurants but had better food at Claimjumper where the bill was indeed way lower than at La Vie en Rose. \r \r I had a blue berry cup as dessert and my husband had a custard tart. I did not eat more than a few, the fruits were quite honestly again spoiled at the bottom and my husband regretted that the tart tasted like it had been in the refrigerator uncovered again for a couple days. \r Being a French refined restaurant does not only resides in having high class manners, old wall paper, a few diplomas on the walls, old style furnishing and very (very) dimmed lights. You need to differentiate yourself be more inventive, higher in flavours, surprising! Let's sum-up, I did not get sick with what I ate but with the idea of paying so much for such a poor quality of food. \r \r The clients of La Vie en Rose, have the right to expect excellence. This is what they pay for but definitely not what they receive and I feel like they are given a wrong impression of what real French cooking art is. \r \r Louis L., owner, it's time to wake up and get a real chef, your clients deserve it!"" Pros: Great building - easy to park / great service Cons: Disappointing pricey food more

A truly wonderful romantic meal 10/23/2008

My husband and I celebrated our third wedding anniversary here. We didn't quite know what to expect but we were very happy with the outcome. The service was wonderful we never felt the need to get the server's attention. The food was heavenly. I had the duck confit and my husband had the veal, both dishes were perfectly cooked and seasoned. We also had the escargots and the grilled shrimp with truffles chardonnay cream sauce and again both were very very good. The crowning moment of the night was the dessert. We had the raspberry souffle it was, as my husband said, ""pure unadulterated perfection."" We both loved this place, it was very romantic and the service was the best we've had in a very long time. But keep in mind that we did visit during the week and have no idea what it would be like on the weekend. Also they have recently changed their hours and are now open Sundays for dinner from 4pm - 8 pm. more

Great everytime 2/25/2007

La Vie En Rose has maintained quality cuisine and service over the past 10 years that I have had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant. The beautiful decor, warm service and exceptional food all come at a very reasonable cost, especially in an area where good French cuisine is hard to come by. I've never disliked any of the appetizers or entrees I've ordered, and the souffle is a must! I'm never worried about having a bad experience at this restaurant. more

The Best French food this side of Normandy 12/21/2006

I have been a customer of La Vie en Rose for over 15 years, and I have never been disappointed. Everything about the restaurant is first class. The building has the warm feeling of a French country manor. You enter into a foyer with a large fireplace, espcially nice in the winter time. You will be greated as though you were a visiting dignitary, and seated in a what can be a very romantic ambiance (hint - take someone special with you!) The menu includes fine French entrees. My personal favorites are the mushroom soup, and the canard (duck) confite, which is outstanding. Of couse the wine list is one of the best in Orange County, and expert advice is there if you request it. Of course, how could a great French dinner end but with a souffle, which you might consider ordering at the time you place your dinner order, as they are all prepared fresh.\r \r Of course, all of this, amibance, service, and food is well worth the prices at La Vie, which undersandably are on the high side. \r \r Merci Beaucoup et Bon Appetit Pros: Fine dining, in a wonderful atmosphere, with great service and food Cons: Pricey especially if you have a large group. more

Very nice French Restaurant 3/2/2006

We visited the restaurant during lunch hours; it's cheaper than dinner yet still serve great selection of entrees. For appetizer we had Smoked Salmon, Green Asparagus & Toast and Escargots in Garlic, Parsley and Herb Butter; both were nice. Soups are French Onion Soup and Cream of Mushroom Soup topped with a Pastry Shell. I had a Rebecca Salad, Orange Dressing with Walnuts & Dried Apricots, which is really tasty with the unique dress. The entrees Calf's Liver, Onions, Fresh Raspberry Sauce was really good with handmade mashed potatoes and nicely presentation of the plate. AT then end, I requested Souffle even it wasn't on the menu. And I'm glad I asked, it was heavenly, and they gave me all three sauces to go with, it was fantastic with all: choclate, raspberry and Grand Marnier! Pros: Food, Service more
