after my dinner last night at la residence im a fan for life. first off we sat on thier outdoor patio and it was like someting out of a movie. what else, attenitve but not overbearing service, amazing food (try the Crab!), great wine list, and the perfect date atmosphere! the only bad thing was having to choose from all the desserts, my girlfriend and i loved it all so much, we will be back next week. Disappointed 4/20/2004

I can't believe this is considered romantic! My boyfriend and I were very disappointed in the atmosphere and the food. I can't tell if this place is a cafeteria, a reception home, or a bar. No definitive answer. Please unconfuse us! more

A Great Place to host a Party 1/24/2004

In Dec., La Rez hosted an end-of-semester party for a large group of med students. The experienced manager was very willing to work with us to customize the event to fit our needs but still meet our (student) budget. On the day of the party, a personalized menu and their cheerful staff created a cozy atmosphere even with over 100 people in attendance. The classic house and winterized porch are inviting even on very cold days. This is by far the best place in Chapel Hill to host a party! Pros: Great Staff, Great Food, Wonderful Place more

Refreshing 11/18/2003

Recently returning to Chapel Hill after a 12 year hiatus, I was surprised, and maybe a little concerned, to hear that La Residence had become a hopping bar. Eventually overcoming my reservations, I tried LaRes to see what all the hype was about. The food was better then ever; new chef seems to keep it on the cutting edge. Eating late during dinner service, it was a pleasure to see the young college crowd arrive. As LaRes hasn't lost focus on the food and art of fine dining service I believe the fusion of nightlife and fine dining is a win-win for customers and restaurant alike. It's a treat in downtown Chapel Hill 11/16/2003

We were driving in downtown Chapel Hill after several years of having left the area. What a treat to discover the new La Residence. I had the lamb shanks and foie gras and my partner had the tuna cube and filet. The price was excellent and the food was a true match for their reputation. It was a live music night so the staff allowed us to move to their heated patio for a blue grass band performance at no extra charge. We enoyed a delicious chocolate mousse dessert and a heavenly mocha orange cheesecake. And their was a cafe menu on the patio for those preferring to eat late. We are planning to return for more live music our next trip in town and try the light food on the patio. Try it! You will be impressed! Birthday party was the best! 11/16/2003

We just had my 21st birthday party on the patio at La Rez and were treated like royalty. THe staff were so friendly and helpful and the chocolate cake was to die for. I had the foccacia pizza and they had chicken sandwiches, pork tortas and filet hamburgers. Imagine at La Rez and it was a live music night so we got music too. What a treat. I would highly recommend if money and good food are important to you, that you try the new patio menu, especially for their live music option. I booked my engagement party at La Residence and came in for dinner to check things out... The service was outstanding, the food was spectactular- aesthetically pleasing and delicious, and the wine selction was fabulous! We cannot wait to visit this location again. Disappointed 11/4/2003

We picked this restaurant since it had been so highly rated, but frankly, I was extremely disappointed. I expected so much more from such a highly rated restaurant. The atmosphere was romantic, but I have been to more romantic places. First we were seated in a room with a really loud party. We asked to be moved and were accommodated. The service overall though was only so-so - we waited 10-15 minutes before someone came by to take our drink orders and the restaurant was not even crowded. Also, I ordered the grouper and must admit that the dish was quite bland and tasteless. But dessert was good, and the best part of the meal was the wine! But overall, I expected more. more

I have been eating at La Rez for at least 10 years. This new menu and chef are great. The menu is new and inventive. I woulds recommmend any one to give the place a try. You can go casual and eat in the bar or be romantic on the other side. Pros: new bar, Great Service more

Its the bomb! 8/12/2003

Having attended a fabulous wedding reception at La Rez in Julyl, my friend and I decided to try the restaurant for dinner last week. Its the bomb. We thought the food at the wedding was far superior to any we had at previous hotel weddings by the way. We ate on the patio and tried the cafe and regular dinner menu. And the chef ended up coming out explaining different menu items. WOW! Since when do Triangle chefs bother with this service. The lobster roll and lump crabcakes are definitely five star. The beet salad is a definite must. Even the mosquitoes were absent during our visit. And the desserts, I should have started with them. Chapel Hill has got to do better. Also, the friendly staff should rate kudos. I've been back three times in 4 weeks and its my new favorite find in the area. Breath of Fresh Air 6/15/2003

I have been to La Rez several times now and i have to say it feels like home. Not only is the food fantastic, but the place is extremely comfortable. The service is personal and the settings are romantic. For late night, things are kicked up a notch but still as high class as late night bars get. With the team being so young at La Rez, they really have their fingers on the pulse of this college community. The bartenders are fantastic, thanks for the good times. Best Dining Experience! 6/5/2003

My husband and I moved to the area 4 months ago, and we really enjoy eating at nice restaurants. We recently came across La Residence and had the most incredible dinner! We have officially found our favorite restaurant in the Triangle. The place is not only beautiful, but employs prompt and courteous staff. The food was heavenly. Our hats off to the Chef! Can't wait to go again! We highly recommend La Residence to anyone. Pros: Food, Ambiance, Service Cons: NONE! more

Downtown eat treats here 4/27/2003

In walking downtown Chapel Hill, I discovered Cafe La Rez on the side street near the downtown area. A beautiful breezy patio dining adventure was the best eating treat I have had yet this spring. The salmon napolean and tuna tartare were the best I've ever had. The eggplant Kebobs and the filet burger were beautiful to behold and another taste treat. And to top it off the desserts were to die for. Next time I am starting with dessert here. The staff was friendly and helpful and invited us back for some late night live music and drinks. We have made it back twice for the late night scene and enjoyed the crab dip and crostinis and mediterranean hot wings for a great price. New treat for old favorite 4/27/2003

I just dropped in to the new outdoor cafe at Cafe La Rez and was very impressed. The garden ambience was a delight as was the tasty and beautifully presented food. The new cafe menu they are presenting is much lighter than the traditional fare but up to La Rez's usual standards. The service staff seems to be younger and friendlier than the previous staff and the Chef even came out to discuss our food choices. All in all, it was a superlative stop in the dining scene of Chapel Hill. Pros: Outdoor garden dining, lighter menu, excellent service Cons: No weekend cafe menu more

i love la rez! from the late nite sence to a romantic dinner the late nite is great for all ages not too smokey, and a great place to just hang out not a traditional club and as for a romatic dinner it's a wonderful place overall the food the service and most of all the atmosphere i would suggest the restaurants to anyone of any age and it's so versitile more
