Best private party venue in town 10/29/2007

Cafe La Rez is absolutely the best place to have a private party or wedding reception. We had a party with about 80 guests on the patio and it was absolutely perfect! It's a lovely space that has flexibility to be host to large or small events. Planning the party was a breeze as they are very experienced at hosting parties and seem to have it down to a science. The hardest part was selecting the menu because all of the selections sounded so scrumptious, I had a hard time narrowing it down. The food lived up to my expectations and more. The next day, my guests were still raving about the food....especially the chocolate mousse cups! The wait staff was exceptional and were on top of everything. I was so confident they had everything under control, that I was able to spend time with all of my friends and just enjoy myself. If you're looking for a place for a special occasion or wedding reception, you can't go wrong with La Rez. Pros: Great food, service, ambience, ease of parking more

Still first rate 10/9/2007

A group of four of us went to La Residence on a Monday night in October. It used to be one of our regular stops for nice meals, but for some reason, we just hadn't been for a while. Like a decade, perhaps? When we arrived at 7:30, the restaurant was nearly empty. I was concerned. There was no reason to be. Everything was as I remembered. The menu was interesting, the wine list one of the best selected in the Triangle (and not short...), the service was fantastic (darn well should be with as few of us as there were - but they really were just enough, not too much, and very precise), and the food and presentation were excellent. We sat outside on a very pleasant evening. I had rainbow trout with a corn salsa that complimented and didn't overwhelm the moist and delicate fish. Everyone else enjoyed their entrees as well. And the creme brulee was super. I'd highly recommend it, and we plan to go back much, much sooner than 2017. Pros: Great food, excellent wine list, good service Cons: Parking costs money until 8:00. more

Marvelous 9/23/2007

Great food. The filet, melts in your mouth. The mussels from the cafe menu...out of this world. I've never had them with saffron before...the flavors dance on your tongue like a flavor ballet with balance and elegance. An extensive wine list and a really unique atmosphere make La Residence one of our new favorites. more

Best patio dining around 9/23/2007

We were tipped off to try the cafe menu on the patio here. Boy was it a great idea. Besides being outside under twinkly lights and overhead fans, the food was delicious. Fried Green tomatoes, Watermelon salad and Steak Sandwich were reasonably price and good too. And the shrimp and grits and chicken pie were just right for a cafe size portion. Our waiters were attentive and the mojitos were some of the best ever. Give it a whirl for light dining. Pros: patio dining, great drinks Cons: paid parking lot before 8pm more

Sorry, I have to go along with reviewer ""Overrated"". We spent a ton and got mediocre food and service. With Elaines and Lantern nearby, why choose this place? Disappointing 9/12/2007

I read so many positive reviews about this restaurant, but was very disappointed at the quality of food and service. The bread that came with the appetizer was burned and it was very noticeable. I couldn't believe the bread served liked it was. The entrees took an hour to come out and when they did I also couldn't believe four scallops were $27. The other entree had mussels that were extremely small for an upscale restaurant and the shrimp looked and tasted like they were previously frozen and were also very small for such a pricey entree. Furthermore, the place is advertised as a French restaurant but there is nothing French on the menu. I will not be back. Cons: Parking, cost for quality of food and service more

My wife and I have done 200+ events there as deejays, mostly receptions, holiday parties and have found it to be one of the best venues in North Carolina for this--excellent food, unmatched, professional staff, really tops at putting on a reception, a rehearsal event, as well as holiday and other traditional parties. Great Spot, Amazing Food 6/23/2007

I recently attended my brother's wedding reception at La Rez. Great food, great service, and great atmosphere. I would highly recomend this restaurant! You're really missing out on a very special spot in Chapel Hill if you don't try it. And by the way, for those reviews complaining about parking, there's a parking lot \r directly across the st. and it's only a dollar an hour until 8pm. After all these years 3/23/2007

My wife and I came down from Maine to celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary. So many things about Chapel Hill have changed that we almost didn't recognize the area! I can't explain how fantastic it was to be able to stay at The Carolina Inn and have our anniversary dinner at La Residence- the same places we went to over ten years ago. We were able to relax and enjoy our meal in the front room with the fireplace. My wife ordered what the executive chef himself recommended- seasonal goat cheese salad and the filet mignon, and I selected their she-crab soup and seafood linguine. Her salad came with the most delicious strawberries and balsamic vinaigrette, and the temperature of her steak was perfect. My dishes were made with the most fresh ingredients, and the seasoning was a little Southern, a little French. The service was very professional but not too uptight- Perfect after all these years! more

Highly rated...not in my opinion 3/21/2007

We had heard about this place for years, so the wife and I elected to give it go prior to a theatre gig in Chapel Hill. I was quite disappointed. The ambience was nice, the service competent, and the food was good, although not memorable. The price was absurd when you consider the total package...waaayyyy overpriced. I would not (and have not) recommend this to anyone. Pros: Ambience is decent Cons: Overpriced; have to pay to park. more

Wonderfully romantic, fabulous food, great service! 8/6/2006

My husband proposed to me at this restaurant. It was such a wonderful experience and would encourage anyone to give it a try. It is family owned but delighfully gourmet. The wine list is exquisite, the chocolate martini's are amazing, and the food speaks for itself. As someone born in France, I must say any negative reviews that you might read about this restaurant are from people who have never experienced real french cuisine. It is absolutely fabulous. I have eaten at La Rez several times, and it never falls short of wonderful. My boyfriend and I stopped in last week, and the holiday decorations made me feel right at home. Unlike other fine dining establishments in the area, La Rez is warm, from the atmosphere to the staff. The filet, pumpkin soup and cheesecake are better than any in the area. Our waiter was very knowledgable of the food and wine, and picked the perfect bottle for us! Although the restaurant may seem expensive, the portions are so large that you don't leave hungry, a complaint I have had at other restaurants such as Il Palio, Elaine's and The Lantern. Overall a great restaurant, and the first place I reccomend when friends are looking for a good date spot. Pros: food, wine list more

Going outdoors with more style 12/3/2005

We had dinner on La Rez's outdoor patio last night and were impressed with the ambience and service. We had experienced the menu in front of the fireplace with a business group and decided to try the heated patio for a more casual experience. It was GREAT! And, the food was as good as ever. If you want some good food in a place that feels like a New Orlean's restaurant patio, try La Rez. You will be happy you gave the outdoors a try. And its the middle of winter too.. Don't have high expectations... 11/29/2005

We couldn't wait to dine here after reading some of the reviews. When we arrived, the setting appeared romantic. Afterwards, we were highly disappointed. The service was unimpressive. The food tasted like it was prepared in a microwave. My seafood dish included mashed potatoes (the powdered kind). There's no way a fine restaurant serves powdered mashed potatoes! The wine and dessert were ok but it's really hard to mess that up. Later on, we discovered that Le Residence was more popular for their late night dinner menu, which included ""appetizing"" items like fried chicken fingers and french fries. I'm sure this menu is great for the post frat party when trying to sober up!! Once upon a time Le Residence must've had a fine chef. It is clear that this is no longer the case. I have been only once, for a special occasion with the entire restaurant rented out. It was phenomenal. The food--even though we only chose between 2 dishes--was amazing, I was very impressed at the flavor and attention to detal because of the mass-production that must have taken place to deliver so many meals @ the same time. more

Unforgettable Evening at La Residence 10/2/2005

I took my girlfriend to La Residence for our anniversary dinner - certainly one not to be forgotten. Ms. Gualtieri was extremely accomodating - we were given a private table by the window with a beautiful flower arrangement, rose petals, and a fantastic champagne. The service was fantastic - the chef himself came out to wish us a happy anniversary at the end of our meal. I had the beef carpaccio appetizer and the shrimp skewer dinner, both of which were fantastic. My girlfriend had the potato leek soup and the grouper entree - she's typically not one to clean her plate, but she did here. The deserts are exactly as you would expect, light and almost too good to eat. Our deserts were garnished with a piece of candy that said ""Happy Anniversary."" Service was competent, but a bit slow. Nice presentation on the food, which was good, maybe above average, but nothing outstanding. Ambience was poor...do not expect a quiet, private conversation. Always a disappointment 6/14/2005

I've eaten at La Rez a few times over the years, always hoping it will have gotten better, but each time I end up disappointed. Last meal we spent well over $100 for a simple meal for two and at the end of it the only thing they really did well was the specialty beer we ordered. Everything else was decent but extremely overpriced and ultimately unmemorable. The ambience would have been nice were it not for the constant shouts and shrieks of a gaggle of drunk sorority girls at a party in the next room that made it difficult to hold a conversation. I think I've learned my lesson now... not going back. Cons: overpriced more

The Fuqua School of Business at Duke 6/3/2004

Each year, we have hundreds of alumni return to campus for Reunion Weekend. After graduating with their MBA, they are used to entertaining and/or eating in top notch restaurants for work. With that said, La Residence continues to be at the very top of their list of places to eat for their reunion dinners. The ambiance is serene, the food is exquisite and the service is unbelievable. It is also our Dean and his wife's favorite restaurant hands down. They'll find any excuse to eat there. I have always had incredible meals at La Rez and I look forward to going every chance I get. It's the perfect place for a romantic meal, a great place to meet friends for dinner, or an excellent atmosphere to host a business affair. I cannot recommend it enough.
