Great vet 5/6/2015

We've been taking our cats and dogs (6 of them) to Dr. Reif for 26 years and couldn't be happier. He's always professional and carefully explains the pros and cons of the treatment options. He has been able to diagnose issues with simple tests, not the outrageously expensive ones other vets wanted to do. He's not super touchy-feely. He's just a really good vet with a matter-of-fact demeanor. Perhaps some interpret that as unfriendly or cold. I don't. He encourages me to hold our pets and talk soothingly while he does what he needs to do. As for rodents and biting, I've had over 50 in my life and never been bitten. I don't think it's to be expected. more

Think Twice if you have a Sick Rodent 6/6/2012

So, I brought my mother's hamster in three days ago. I know a lot of people don't view rodents as worth it to bring in but I could tell she was ill and she was a sweet little thing and so I thought, might as well give it a shot since if it's one thing this clinic has, it's non-outrageous prices. \r \r My hamster was pretty ill. When I brought her in, Dr. Reif checked her out and told me she had pneumonia and that he'd give me antibiotics for it. Then, he flips her over onto her back and listens to her heartbeat. As everyone knows, animals get stressed out at the vets and as a vet whose receptionist told me treats small animals, he must also know that rodents can bite. \r \r My hamster bit him and he dropped her to the floor. Anyone whose been to Dr. Reif's knows there's a weigh scale table that takes up at least a quarter of the room. Had he just been holding her over the table, she would have only fell a few inches. Instead, she fell from his hands to the floor - a several foot drop. From more

We've been taking our pets to Dr. Reif for over 14 years. We always get exceptional service and caring from Dr. Joel. La Plaza genuinely cares about the pets they treat. WOULD RECOMMEND LA PLAZA to anyone !! THANKS FOR EVERYTHING more

Neglect! 11/3/2010

I took a feral kitten I had trapped to La Plaza last week. This was one horrific experience. When I went to pick the kitten up, Sheryl brought the cat carrier out to me and set it down. I looked down and the kitten didn't seem right. I asked over and over, "Is this kitten okay, is he sleeping, etc" and no one bothered to pay attention or answer me. I finally opened up the carrier and when I reached in, the kitten was cold and stiff. He had been dead for some time. It is still shocking even as I write this. \r \r He was feral, but I was still paying full price and his little life was important to me. I own and run an animal service business and realize things can go wrong with animals, but the level of neglect that no one even checked on this kitten horrifies me. La Plaza refunded the cost of the neuter, not the vaccination cost, but nonetheless, I didn't want the money, only the kitten. Bassett hound survived 3/19/2010

The first time I went to La Plaza my bassett hound was not doing so well he had severe bite marks on his throat and other places, I believe the expertise and care he recieved from everyone at the clinic especially Dr. Reif. My dog survived and is doing great. Now my 12 year old cocker is having issues, I took her to Dr. Reif once again my dog is doing great after a 2 days on the proper medication.so I say to anyone looking for a vet. I will never go anywhere else. I cannot say thank you enough to everyone at the clinic. more

Freindly service, great prices 3/4/2010

I was very happy with my first visit to Dr. Reif. He was very kind and gentle with my cats, and very freindly to deal with. The prices are fantastic, I paid 3 times more for the same services at the vet I took them to when I lived in Oakland. I went in, had both my cats checked out and a one year booster shot for each and was in and out in a half hour. I would highly recommend La Plaza. more

I don't know what the negative reviews are about either...I have been going to La Plaza for over 8+ years ...always great care/outcomes at affordable prices. Methinks that other have gone when the clinic has had an extremely overworked day...I know the Joel is the Rohnert Park Shelter vet donating his time to spay/neuter work as well free exam when you adopt an animal...sometimes when I go, the staff, the place and Joel reflect the fatigue of over-work which can seem like indifference, smells and impatience...I just think they do too many things in support of animals in need where there is not much money. But then when I return to the next visit...they are cheery, helpful, the clinic smells great and so on. Because of his dedication to no-kill shelter animals, I support the clinic 100% even though the service and the place can be ragged once in awhile. If I get them on ragged day, I just call back and they respond with professional care and dedication to my pets needs (3 cats and 1 dog more

La Plaza Vet Clinic is Great! 9/25/2009

We have been going to Dr. Reif since 1996 when we got our dog. He has been wonderful. He puts his face right down to her and lets her lick him. As far as what he can do, we have gone through spaying, foxtail removal from an ear and nose, teeth cleaning, removal of lumps on her back leg and gum, diagnosis of stud tail and hip displaysia, and silly 'new dog owner' panics. This shows the range of his skills.He always answers our questions and have had no issues with not getting full details for our dog's care. The staff has changed over the years - some better than others. But overall, no problems. Sure don't understand the bad reviews - everyone has a bad day. When we see Dr. Reif outside of the clinic, he is aloof. But, I think that is how other professionals act (excluding sales people!) more

Caring Vet, Recommend 8/20/2009

I am surprised by the negative comments below...it doesn't seem like we see the same vet! Dr. Reif always pets my cats and dogs before he even examines them. I live in Santa Rosa and drive down there because I trust his judgment. His fees are reasonable and he holds a clinic on Wed nts so you can get updated shots w/out having to pay 4 an office visit. I really like him, my mom takes her pets to him and I've referred many people there who have been happy :) more

Our animals have gone to La plaza Veterinary for years. We were always happy. Lately the place has gone downhill. It is dirty, the people at the desk are as rude and unprofessional as I have ever seen. Don't waste your time We're not. more

Teeth Cleaning special 3/27/2009

All I needed was a teeth cleaning for my healthy three year old cat. But after checking with several Dr.'s in my area, they were all charging several hundred dollars. A good friend suggested I try her vet, Dr. Reif. So I did, and found his rate schedule more than reasonable.I made an appointment, found his office to be clean and inviting and his staff friendly and professional.My kitty went through the procedure just fine. I am very happy with the services of LaPlaza Veterinary Clinic. more

Dr. Reif saved my diabetic cat's life! 2/22/2009

One of my feline friends, Humo, and I have nothing but genuine gratitude for Dr. Reif and his staff at LaPlaza Veterinary Clinic. In essence, they saved Humo?s life.\r \r Humo is a domestic short hair cat, about 10 years old. Last summer, when he rapidly lost weight, I took him to the first local veterinary I found?as we had recently moved and did not have a vet yet. The diagnosis was sad and sour. Not only was Humo suffering from an advanced case of diabetes, his teeth were crumbling down and he was FIV positive (meaning, he carries the feline version of AIDS virus.) The vet said Humo did not have much to live, anyway? and that to treat him properly for the diabetes, it would cost me about $ 300 a month. He recommended to put him to sleep.\r \r The next couple of months were sad indeed, as I watched Humo further loosing weight and energies even though I could tell he was not giving up, and was still enjoying the little delights Life has for us. Dr. Reif takes good care of our pup 6/3/2008

Dr. Reif and the staff at La Plaza Veterinary Clinic are very helpful.\r We go there on the recommendation of family and friends who have been going there for 10+ years. We got out puppy 6 months ago and have always used La Plaza Vet. \r \r I like utilizing their drop in clinic on Wednesday evenings for shots when the pup doesn't need a check up; so it was just $25 for each batch of puppy shots rather than $68 for the consult and shots, which is the case if you make an appointment. During this drop-in clinic you do not get Dr. Reif, you get the talented technician but you do have to help and hold your animal. \r \r They are very prompt with helping and have great customer service. When my puppy got stung by a bee and had a minor allergic reaction and I had a major panic reaction, I talked to the receptionist and told her what was going on and she called me back immediately (less than 5 minutes) to tell me exact instructions and it all turned out to be fine. more

The WORST 4/30/2008

I had my dog neutered at their place through the "Free Spay and Neuter" program with the animal shelter. Not that it was any of the shelter's fault though, but i had expected that it would be a decent place. The stitching was extremely poorly done. We ended up having to take him to a 24 hour emergency clinic to get him looked at because he was bleeding from his stitches pretty badly. He needed antiboiotics severely. The customer service sucked! They said nothing about how I should care for him once he was home but to get a cone if he messed with it. They just wanted you to be in and out. Oh, not to mention when I walked in to get my dog the place smelled like urine. Extremely unhappy! more

BEST VET IN THE WORLD 2/28/2008

I took my cat to Dr. Reif when I first got her as a second opinion on her eyes. Her bottom eyelids curled up into her eyes. I was told by another vet that it was going to cost $1000 to fix her eyes. My friend told me to try this vet out because he was the only one that had correctly diagnosed her cat and she loved him. He ended up doing the surgery, and only charged $500 for it. My cat can see beautifully today and has no problems. I had to move to Colorado for a year for my husbands job, while I was out there I had a terrible vet experience. The vet I was going to never caught my cats urinary problem even though I took her in there 5 times cuz i knew something was wrong, she ended up dying suddenly, with no explanation. I know in my heart that this would never have happened if she had still been seeing Dr. Reif. He listened to me, knows that I can tell when something is really wrong with my animals, and does something about it. Now that I have moved back, I am not in Rohnert Park, I a more

Wonderful Vet!! 12/22/2007

I brought my cat in to be checked up after a respiratory infection because he had scar tissue and his eye lashes were growing in toward his eyes. He needed kitty plastic surgery. Dr. Reif took the challenge, removed the scar tissue and my cat can finally see. All the treatment came at a cost that was completely reasonable and the care was awesome. I have other pets that I have brought to him and he has never tried to over treat them or recommends surgeries that they don't need. He's a very trustworthy and competent veterinarian. more

I have been using Joel as a vet for years. He is honest, does not advise unnecessary lab test, surgeries, etc. His prices are great! Every animal I have ever brought to him was handled with tender affection. He is a true Vet, there for all the right reasons.Lisa Smith more

Vet 10/24/2007

I have been going to Dr. Reif for about 20 years. He was in Santa Rosa at the time. He is a different breed, really doesn't seem to care about animals I don't know if that's the coldness he has to be to be a Vet or if that's the way he really is? I really wonder if he does other surgeries besides spay/neuter? It seems when I want / need something done for my animal he says its not necessary. more

Never again 7/24/2007

I found Dr. Reif to be very rude and arrogant. He gave no opportunity to ask questions or even request a general check up (my dog was in to be spayed) and the staff seemed indifferent. I would never go to them again! They gave no instructions on how to manage my babies pain and when I called for advice it took several hours to get a reply. more

Great place to take your critters 6/16/2006

Been going there for years. Dr. Joel Reif is the vet there and he is great.\r He keeps up on the latest veterinary medicine and is great with the animals.\r He does lots of work for the local animal shelter too. PROS: Great vet. Great staff. CONS: more
