Honestly, yes the food was good, but to go to a place that charges .50 to refill your drink! Com'on! more

OK food, but $$ over priced 9/27/2009

Guess I am ruined being from east Texas where anywhere you go you can get good food for 1/2 what Kathy charges. Chicken fried steak from Ma Goodsons in Tomball (home of the best CF in Texas) with all the trimmings (corn on the cob, mashed potatoes, beans and cornbread or homemade biscuits) costs about $7.95 including sweet tea. Come down a little and I shall return. Pros: The food is good. Cons: Food is too pricey. Cornbread fair. more

If you don't like Kathy's, you don't know good food 6/10/2009

Expect to shell out $25 a head for a meal, but the portions are large and the food is incredible. Don't expect a fancy atmosphere or waiter in a tux. This place is real, down home southern goodness. Everything is always juicy and mouth watering. I go now and ask the cook to make something for me, I don't even need to look at the menu, and everything is so good, it's too hard to decide. The tea, lemonade and all the desserts are also fabulous, I can't resist the peach cobbler! more

It used to be ok, but it is waayyy over priced! 5/31/2009

I used to eat there often for years. Then their main seller, Chicken Fried Steak, was never in stock and then they took it off the menu without explanation. The side portions are tiny and wayyyy over priced. However, I understand that having a business in Las Vegas is expensive. Then they get an attitude when you don't want anything else on the menu. It is a shame that a place has a number one dish and then stop selling it. I still wonder how they stay open when people would go there SPECIFICALLY for that dish! I haven't eaten there in a year and not missing it anymore. Pros: Used to have great Chicken Fried Steak Cons: They stopped selling the best selling item! more

Never Again! 4/24/2009

I told my boyfriend about Kathy's and wanted him to eat there because he lived in New Orleans for 15 years and misses the great food. We were both shocked at the pricey menu. But the kicker was the server who made no secret of how perturbed he was that I ordered an appetizer portion of gumbo instead of the regular portion. He said, ""I don't know if she [referring to the cook I assume] is going to want to do that. You're not supposed to order only an appetizer."" WTF?! We couldn't believe it! Then when he brought the gumbo, he made ANOTHER rude comment about how reluctant the cook was to serve only an appetizer portion. I'm a native Las Vegan and NEVER had I ever been treated this blatantly rude and scoffed at for ordering something! I will NEVER eat at Kathy's again. The food was good, but the horrible service left a bad taste in our mouths. Pros: food Cons: terrible service, food overpriced more

AMAZING!!! 10/20/2008

I am NOT from the south so I can't compare it to Grandmas. My grandparents where Irish immigrants. BUT I have traveled the world over and I CAN say without a doubt, the best fried chicken, yams, and bread pudding I have EVER tasted! The green beans had the most amazing flavor too! Homemade cornbread! A friend ordered the smothered steak and it was incredible! Even better than M&M's. Although M&M's has fan-freaking-tastic cornbread stuffing. Next time I go to Kathy's, I will try the ribs. I am from Kansas City originally so I don't think ANYTHING in Vegas could ever come close to the BBQ I am used to but I will let you know how Kathy's compares. Pros: the food, the food, the food, the food Cons: too far from my house! more

kathy's Southern Cooking 10/11/2008

I just relocated to the LV an a friend told me I had to check out this place called Kathy's Southern Cooking, so here I am to tell you about my experience: It was a Friday night the wait was no very long for me and my friend to get a table. We sat down look at the menu and I knew I was home! I ordered the sweet tea and my friend ordered lemonade; both were mouth watering good! when the catfish and the smothered chicken came out both were steaming hot(thats how I like my food hot, hot hot). the catfish had this cornmeal type batter that reminded me of being in my own home as if grandma cooked it for me. The smothered chicken was so tender and juicy that my friend could not resist licking a finger or two with out even realizing that she had a napkin on the table, ha,ha. I must say the sidedishes were just and delectible as the main course. Everyone must try this place so they can experience the down home feel for themselves. Pros: the food is well worth the $ Cons: when everyone eats here I wont be able to get a table more

Good food, ancient method of payment. 5/29/2008

The food was really good. Service was a little strained - only one server spread over four or five tables at once. I realize in most restaurants that is a normal ratio, but for some reason the server may not have been used to that. The ribs and fried chicken were excellent entrees. The potato salad side order was perfect, but the macaroni and cheese had a weird taste to it. Corn bread was mediocre. Overall, it was a cool place; however, the kicker came at the end when I tried to pay the bill. They split the bill no problem, but they only accepted debit cards or cash. Seeing as how I had no cash, I used my debit card, but they had to charge a minimum of $20 and also charged a service fee of $1.50. I had no other choice but to accept, so I was given the excess over my meal as cash, left the tip, and left the establishment knowing that if there was a next time, I would have to remember to bring cash. A few days later, I notice in my bank account that they put the charge through as an ATM withdrawal instead of a regular debit card transaction, so my bank also charged me a $2.00 service fee for not using a bank ATM. I don't remember seeing anything describing this situation at the restaurant, so just beware and make sure to bring cash to avoid a potential $3.50 in extra fees! Pros: food Cons: debit card handling, refills cost extra more

Overhyped and overpriced 12/16/2007

Having lived in Atlanta and recently relocated to Henderson, I was excited to see that a local magazine featured Kathy's Southern Cooking, giving it rave reviews. Come to find out once I actually visited the restaurant, it's not what critics and locals hype it to be. The lunch menu had only 5 sandwiches listed and the majority of the menu was dinner entrees (which appeared high priced...my friend and I watched several plates being served of the dinner entrees and the servings were small). My friend and I were sorely disappointed by the limited choices, the indifferent demeanor of the waitress and the average-tasting and below par serving and presentation of the food. The only saving grace was the sweet tea, but it is not enough to warrant all the raves and recommendations to endorse this restaurant. more

Very Tasty Food 8/9/2007

Wow is this food good! Everything that my family and I tried was delicious. My personal favorite was the fried chicken plate. The chicken was extra crispy and surprisingly not greasy at all (for fried chicken of course). If you like it spicy, then pour on their special sauce they place on the table. All of the sides were great as well...I highly suggest the red beans and rice. Also their cornbread is very tasty and their homemade lemonade is an excellent thirst quencher. The decor is lacking but do not get turned off by the atmosphere! And the wait for your food can be kind of long but everything comes to your table freshly prepared and piping hot. The wait staff is very friendly and always catering to your needs. If you are looking for superb home cooking then do not miss this! Pros: Excellent food, good service Cons: lacking in decor more

Good southern (Lousisiana) soul food 10/16/2006

the food is delicious. The place will remind you of your favorite ""hole-in-the-wall back home. Its a little more pricey than your typical meat-and-three, however, so bring plenty of cash, or your debit card. Country Fried Steak is fabulous, although more spicy than the typical Texas fare. Smothered pork chops fall off the bone. more

Great Food 9/4/2006

I was born and raised in the south. I've eaten at many southern based restaurants around Las Vegas and Kathy's is by far the best. The food was absolutely great. I took my family there for dinner who are no doubtedly from the South and they absolutely loved it. The pork chops were so delicious and big and juicy. The serving sizes were so big too. The greens and corn bread were mouthwatering. We will definetly be going back and I highly recommend Kathy's if you want some true southern cooking. Pros: Magnificient Food and great service! Cons: A little pricey, but the food makes up for it. more

Best Soul Food In Las Vegas 9/5/2005

I've eaten here many times and I plan on eating here many more times, and Id highly recommend it to others. However, if youre in a hurry, wait until you have more time (this is not a fast food restaurant) because the food is not pre-cooked which is why it is so good. Pros: Food- great, Service, not rushed, parking-good more
