Best

I usually come here for lunch ? really like the sushi. freshly made to order. Sometimes I take my family and we go out for dinner. it gets crowded but it is a lot of fun.

Worst

I heard from a few family members, who are not experienced diners, that this place was a five-star restaurant with Nobu quality food! They also included that it is pricey! Well,...

Got sick 6/18/2011

I went there for dinner yesterday and when I came home I dint feel good. I was sick during the night In the morning I had a terrible headache. I was very misarable. Later today I called the management to tell them how I felt and someone by the name Suki Suh talked to me like I was an idiot . He told me that they never had any complains and that I have to prove to him that I was sick .So I told him that I would be more than happy to come to his restaurant and throw up in his restaurant. What kind of proof can you give someone? He was insulting and could care less about me as a customer. I thought that it was the proper thing for him to give me credit for that dinner and he refused saying that I have to go through his insurance. Not only that I had an upset stomack I ended up with an double headache.Unfortunatelly the owner Kay Iseta is out of the country and her manager Suki is doing hell of a good job with loosing good customers. He is very rude and needs training in customer relashions. more

Never again! 5/15/2011

My first experience was disgusting. The bartender told us that we need to pay right away, because we might disapear without paying. The managers' attitude is rude and unacceptable. They wont let you stay more than 20 min in the restaurant, to finish your dinner. We were told that they needed the table and we needed to leave. The manager literally pulled our plates from the hands, and packed it in the containers. No customer service. The food is salty, nothing special; the price is way too high, $65 for a dish. Avoid this place, there is no customer service ! more

A sad experience and a first time saying - NEVER again 1/23/2011

Dear friends - HOW DARE ANYONE say this place has any ambience or environment or anything pleasant about it outside of the food! The place is disgusting from the shopping center to the utensils, chairs, bathrooms, and food preparation facilities. There is no music etc. In fact the nasty vents on the ceiling are literally dripping with dust. As is everything...literally! The food there has always been what makes my entire family come back. But enough is enough. Tonight's experience was deliberately rude, and the service overall was lacking. This is NOT an isolated incident. The owner is way past showing any pride in ownership as evidenced by her absence and the state of the facility overall. The culture there is negative and their staffing and service shows it. The management is rude from the ownership down to the bussboys. It's sad, We all grew up going there. Bye bye Kampai. Does anyone have another suggestion for this cuisine? I can't stomach spending my money there again. more

Horrible customer service! 9/22/2010

My family and I had been going to Kampai for years, at least since the mid 1980's. Our last visit was a group of around six people. We were not going to pay on one bill. Two friends of ours came with and wanted to pay their own bill while using a coupon they paid for on another website. We had one as well. They were not on the same account, or purchased under the same name. And yet, the manager who I did not get his name, said that we could not use both coupons and that it was the coupon company rule. I know he was lying because I read the rules (the small print) on the coupon and the website before I purchased it and it never said anything about that. The coupons could not be used if they were from the same account. And these were not. The food was very good but the manager's attitude towards us was unacceptable. I was furious. We decided to never go back there again. And given how empty the place was, they will not be in business for much longer. And with that attitude they displayed towards us, it is no wonder they are empty. DO NOT DINE THERE! more

Poor Customer Service- OK food 5/12/2009

While the food was OK ,the customer service was awful. Last Saturday night we arrived on time for our dinner reservation but had to wait for them to fill the table up. We were able to order but the meal was delayed because of the other guests. The chef was good but gave the other guest one of my party's food. She had to wait an additional 10-15 minutes while very one finished their food. Then at the end of the meal as we waited for someone to return from the restroom we were told that they needed the table and we needed to leave. They allow 1.5 hours for dinner and we were over our allotted time. They were the ones who contributed to this by delaying us at the beginning by making us wait for the table to fill up. Not only were they unapologetic, they thought that what they did was appropriate behavior- so much for an enjoyable experience. I will be dining at other Japanese Restaurants as they will appreciate my business. Cons: Just like any other Japanese Steakhouse more

What I miss most 1/12/2009

I moved down to Florida and Kampai is one of the places I miss the most. I still dream about golden shrimp. more

Luggage stolen from restaurant - Do not go there!‎ 10/2/2008

Went to restaurant with my colleagues on my way to the airport (on a Wednesday evening). I asked the hostess where I can keep my luggage and laptop bag and she instructed me to keep it behind the podium. After 45 min, my cab to the airport called me that they were waiting for me outside. And when I was walking out of the restaurant, I went to up the hostess to ask for my luggage and she said that she has not seen it. My luggage had been stolen! The restaurant told me that I had kept the luggage at my own risk and they had nothing to do with it. My suspicion is on restaurant employee itself as there were very patrons having dinner and even fewer who had walked out of the restaurant during that time. So no matter how the food is - this business establishment is not reliable or trustworthy. Cons: they steal your luggage more

Stuffed, sleepy, and content. 6/19/2008

I was in town for copier training and went there with a fellow classmate. Decor was nice despite being in a shopping center. Staff was very friendly and attentive to our needs, (never had an empty drink for over a minute). The chef was very entertaining, (the whole flip the knives, food, and eggs through the air with the greatest of ease type thing) And then came the food. It was, and I don't say this lightly, some of the best food I've ever had. The fillet was cooked to perfection. The salmon was the literal definition of ""melt in your mouth."" I wish I had the recipe for the soup. Add to that the salad, fried rice, shrimp, and ice cream dessert. It was a suprise that the total for all that was only $29. I actually had no complaints whatsoever about this place and that, as my friends can tell you, is a reason to call hell and ask if they're liking the snow. Pros: No wait, great service, awesome food, great price. Cons: I was too full to stay and eat more. more

Simply THE BEST 3/6/2008

One of my all-time favorites. I go back time and time again and am never disappointed. If you're looking for quality Japanese food; this place is #1. They have remodeled and the old place was really more inviting, but the food makes it all worthwhile! The sushi is wonderful. The Golden Shrimp is THE BEST. Their filet melts in your mouth. I can live with out the garlic shrimp..... Leaves Beni Hana IN THE DUST. No comparison. For a suburban restaurant, you really need to try this one! Pros: Sashimi, Golden Shrimp, Filet.....It is all THE BEST! Cons: None! more

Nothing Special 9/28/2007

I heard from a few family members, who are not experienced diners, that this place was a five-star restaurant with Nobu quality food! They also included that it is pricey! Well, it is not of those things: Pros: I did not get sick from the McShushi Cons: Nothing is special.... more

Oh how I wish I lived closer.... 8/6/2007

Whenever my husband and I travel to the area to visit family we try to make time to go here simply for the Sushi and golden Shrimp. The food is always wonderul, flavorful, and worth the trip. :-). more

Great Steak......... HORRIBLE SUSHI!!! 7/9/2007

If you're going here to sit down get entertained and have a good steak, this is the place to go. The golden shrimps are amazing and the vegetables that come with the meals will literally make your face melt. I recommend the Kampai Special, it's a little pricey but well worth it. However the bad news is, the sushi is just......awful. The sushi wasn't fresh, it was rolled way too big, and the worst part, lacking any kind of flavor....DO NOT GO HERE FOR SUSHI!!! If you gotta have that delicious Maki roll or some fresh Nigri go to Cafe Sushi on Wells in Chicago. Pros: Great Steak and Shrimp Cons: Take the Sushi and throw it in the gutter more

For die-hard sushi lovers, effete poseurs need not bother. 6/28/2007

This place is always hoping for lunch, so you know the fish is fresh! more

AVIOD AT ALL COSTS! 2/11/2007

The concept is fun, but the quality of service here is appalling. I have never met a restaurant manager who was as unpleasant as the one at Kampai. I decided not to eat here because the service was so rash and utterly distasteful. Please heed my warning and avoid this restaurant at all costs. Cons: service, service, service more

Good sushi and fun atmosphere 10/19/2006

I make excuses to get away from work to be able to stop in here. The sushi bar is very economical and the sushi is always fresh. The chefs will make almost anything you ask for. It might take 10 -15 minutes for a small party to get seated at lunch, but the wait is well worth it. Large variety of sushi that never seems to end. The only thing that would make this palce better is more seating. more

Fantastic Shrimp Flambe 9/29/2006

I went to Kampai for the first time about 2 years ago, and I am always looking for excuses to go again and again. There's always some sort of celebration: birthday, new job, new car, new shoes... Doesn't matter the occassion. It's great for groups, or just as a couple enjoying an evening out. more

Our favorite place to attend once a week 1/28/2006

My wife and I hit the sushi bar once a week. We keep coming back because of the service and the sushi. If you ask them to do it a certain way, they will. Other sushi bars cannot compete with the spicy scallop roll. I recommend this place but be aware, this place looks like a 70's diner on the inside. Pros: sushi, service Cons: ambiance, price more

Great 1/10/2006

This have the best Steak and Sushi that I have ever had. The chefs were great and the only thing better was the food. The fried rice is fantasic with the yolk suace mixed in with it. The kobe fillet melts in your mouth like butter. I highly recoomend this place if you like good food. more
