Really good BBQ 11/9/2010

I wonder where i start. My name is Jon and was my first time in Jim's since as long as i can remember. It seemed to be like the same BBQ place i had been in until i was met at the door by a young man named Chris. The staff was very fast to get me to my seat and help with any questions that i had about the BBQ itself. That i was from Highpoint i was little confused that there was several types of BBQ and ways to prepare it. I actually didn't want to sit where they originally asked me to so they let me move to another seat and was surprised to see that the first person i talked had no problem at all with me moving to somwhere else. The pulled pork is what i had and my lady friend had the pulled chicken and i will have to admit i ate most of her plate along with my own. The young heavy set man that helped us was very fast with our order and checked with us several times and helped us very well. My mom even reminded me it is rare to have a place treat you like you are at home. Most places are not very personal when it comes to service. I am sorry i could not remember his name but i believe it was Gray. I had the best time there and my mother and i will come back as long as they are as helpful everytime. I will see you again next time im down from Highpoint.\r Thanks for the good time,\r Jon more

Always Great! 11/5/2010

I agree with what Mr. Gunter says 100%. This ""Caryite"" person's reviews speak for themselves. If you give Ruth Chris Steakhouse the worst review possible, then you are simply misguided and confused. I will agree, however, that Jim's Famous BBQ and Ruth Chris are on the same level as your reviews indicate. \r I had lunch just yesterday with a buddy of mine and we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. The pulled pork was as good as it always is, nice and moist with NO fat. Plates were served quickly and couldn't have been hotter. Service was quick, curteous, and my tea never got below 3/4 full. And just so people know, the ""owner"" discussed below in the older reviews is no longer the owner and the new owner is great guy that works his tail off. \r Judge for yourself to see who is right, go eat BBQ at Jim's and enjoy yourself! more

Great food, Great service and Clean 11/4/2010

My wife and I dine at Jim's at least once a week and take our family often. That's 6 adults and three kids and it is our favorite place to get together for an enjoyable experience. They serve the best ribs and catfish I have ever had and you won't find barbeque this good without driving to Hickory or Lexington. I just read a review by ""caryite90"". It was so bad I felt compelled to look up the rest of his reviews. This person doesn't like any business but he sure likes to complain. Check it out at by clicking on 'caryite90' on his review. Greg is one of our favorite waiters and one of the most caring waiters we have ever had. He maybe weighs 230 or 240 and is over 6 ft tall, but 350? Another ""caryite90"" over the top observation meant to destroy the reputation of a fine restaurant. Anyone who knows Greg will be obviously impressed with the fact that he works at Jim's to pay his way through graduate school at Carolina. Jim's also has three other servers in school, one of whom is preparing to enter Medical School at Duke. From looking at ""caryite90's"" other reviews, it is very possible he didn't even like his mother's cooking but I doubt he tried to destroy his mother's reputation by fantasizing every bad aspect he could think of. This guy has done 40 reviews on this site alone, including about 33 one star disasters. I'd like to know what this guy does for a living. It is pretty obvious though that he doesn't know anything about southern hospitality and good 'down home cooking' and he has a burr under his saddle for businesses covered by CitySearch. more

Such a Sad, Sad Story 10/9/2010

Jim's Famous BBQ…hmm, where shall we start? Once upon a Time, about 19 years ago, someone had great energy and ambition. He had a talent for making great-tasting food and at some point and time, said: I'm gonna open up my own Restaurant! I'm gonna call it ""Jim's Famous BBQ"", because I make some really good BBQ…and other stuff too! Then several years later, someone lost that energy and ambition… someone got tired and stopped caring about that restaurant. Someone let the place get dirty and didn't care about the quality of service anymore. As a result, business dropped off…there were lots of empty tables at Lunch and Dinner time! Sorry, but I had to start this out as a Story. My Wife, Daughter and I drove to Chapel Hill yesterday to pick up my Son who is attending UNC, and take him out to dinner. We had not been to Jim' Famous BBQ before. I had found out about after checking Restaurant, com for coupons to establishments in that area. I checked the reviews before purchasing the coupon, and they were mixed. But a lot of them alluded to good food, but terrible service. …BAM !!! hit it on the nose people! We arrived at about 6:15 pm. There were only about 5 other tables with people, so I thought service should be relatively quick…right? Nope! It was right at 20 minutes before we were served our beverages by Greg, our waiter. Then the first frightful event: Greg who weighed in at about 350lbs?..and no offense, since I myself am overweight. But Greg was sweatin'…and I mean sweatin'! When he came to take our food order, he leaned with both hands on our table, out of breath, and his sweat was dripping onto our table…kind of grossed us out to say the least. We pretty much were ready to leave at that point! But we were really hungry, and decided to buck up and deal with it! OK, so another 25-30 and our food started to come out. Out of four orders, none of them were even close to being right. (Would take way too much space to elaborate here). But after three attempts, I finally asked Greg WTF was going on??? He said the Cook had lost our food ticket. ???? and I'm wondering…OK, then why did you not come out and ask us what we ordered ??? Cus' Greg kept bringing out food that was not ours (or anyone else's)… 3 times! Needless to say, once we got close, we just ate and were ready to get. I paid by my Debit card, which Greg failed to return to me after running the charge. And we were so pissed by that time, that I did not notice! So today, I got to drive 70 miles round-trip to retrieve my card! But you know…the really sad thing is that this could be a Really Great Restaurant! But they just don't care anymore! So…just let them die off in Peace. Maybe someone with a great amount of energy and talent will open another Famous BBQ joint. more

Worth the drive! 7/5/2010

The second I walked into Jim's Famous BBQ I felt at ease. The setting is very welcoming and comfortable. The food choice was a little hard, but I finally settled with the beef brisket thanks to the help of the generous staff. The food came out quick, and to my surprise extremely delicious. The beef was tender and just outstanding. Even though I come from North Raleigh, it was worth the drive. I have been there several times, and I'm looking forward to my next visit. Pros: Atmosphere, food more

Enjoyable Evening at Jim's BBQ 3/11/2009

3/10/09 was our first visit to Jim's. It was a very enjoyable experience.\r We were treated to free ""lite"" appetizers while waiting for our meals. We had generous portions of the pulled & chopped Bar-B-Que. The collards were good. They are not heavily seasoned, but add the hot sauce and you're home.\r Service is enhanced by joking remarks from the staff. If you do not like laughing, stay out of here.\r \r TRY this place for yourself. I bet you'll be humming to the oldies that play during your dinning adventure. Pros: Good parking, Fast Service, Good Food, Unexpected Laughs Cons: Having to leave more

not worth the time 4/14/2008

I used to eat here awhile back, but the quality of food has definitely gone downhill. While the food comes out quickly, the service leaves much to be desired and the owner a little over the top. If you are looking for authentic southern bbq, this is not the place for you. Pros: cheap food Cons: atmosphere, service, owners more

Avoid everyday 10/3/2007

our visit to jim's famous bbq was a disaster, our waiter was also the bartender, the bbq its like been soak in water overnight with no taste, the cole slaw was like cut up pieces of stuff but nothing added & no taste..the collard greens was wiltered laying around the side of the bowl,,,,,we told the waiter that the cole slaw was terrible he then called the owner JIM & when he asked how the food was and we told him the food was bad he was very sarcastic and he is a owner that dont know how to deal with customer and we will not go back again..we have ate at this place more than 20x but this was our last.......find new a good restaurant and better service.........JIM IS A RUDE PERSON more

Lackluster at best 7/13/2007

I took some friends here because A & Sons is closed on Sundays, and I had read the good reviews. Wow, was I disappointed. The service was excellent, but the food was bland and overpriced. Also, the atmosphere felt like a Toys R Us rather than a BBQ shack. Portions were decent, but, again, not appropriate for the price. If you want better quality, cheaper prices, and bigger portions take the trip to the Q-shack. It's worth the drive from Chapel Hill. Pros: Service Cons: small portions, high prices, bland BBQ more

Excellent Food!!! 3/16/2007

I stumbled upon this little gem of a restaurant one day this week at lunchtime, and I was very pleased with my choice....\r \r I decided on the BBQ chicken half, homemade potato salad and collard greens... I have to tell you, EVERYTHING was FANTASTIC... The bbq was tender and juicy, and the original sauce is to absolutely to die for... My only complaint is that their half a chicken was too small :) The potato salad was freshly made, and was as good as my own, and the absolute BEST that I have EVER tasted by far in a restaurant... The collards were LUSCIOUS and tender, with great flavor, and they even brought you over some delicious light vinegar to pour over them... I had the Pecan Cobbler for dessert, along with a big ole scoop of Vanilla ice cream, and it was VERY GOOD... The cobbler was warm, chuck full of pecans and sweet as can be... The ice cream added a nice contrast to the sweetness of the dessert... I plan to try one of their other delicious desserts next time I am working in the area....\r \r The waitress was sweet as their sweet tea, and was very helpful in helping me to place my order... She walked around bouncing to the music and smiling up a storm... \r \r The place is brightly painted in purples and yellows and cute inside, but the rugs REALLY need to be replaced... The rugs take away from the overall cleanliness of the restaurant... But hey, the food is DELISH, the service is EXCELLENT, the location is CONVENIENT, right off 15-501 in a mall area, and I will be making this a regular stop when in Chapel Hill... \r \r Whoever doesn't like this place doesn't know GOOD down home cooking and DELICIOUS barbecue! Try it, and see for YOURSELF! You won't be disappointed!!! Pros: Delicious Food, Wonderful Service, Reasonably Priced, Great Location, Parking Cons: Rugs need to be replaced more

Has gone downhill! 3/3/2007

This used to be a good place to go and get reasonable bbq. Never anything fantastic, but very good. The last few times in they have had poor service, below average food, and the place needs a good cleaning. I would recommend finding another place in the area to spend your $! Pros: Menu great for the meat lovers Cons: Service, food quality more

Jim's, its not that great 9/15/2006

Jim's Famous BBQ was not as wonderful as I had hoped. It is very easy to find and conveneint, but the dinning experience was not up to par. For one I am proud to be a southerner and love my BBQ, but Jim's Famous BBQ is not good or authentic BBQ, not to mention the restaurant is far from clean. There was actualy a large creature (B.U.G) visable on the floor. If you ask me, that is not acceptable. Then there was the service. I'm sorry, but this was no selling point either. The servers seemed reluctant to provide anything but the bare minimum and that is not what I call service. Oh by the way when I left there was this absolutly terrible smell I just hope it wasn't the food. If you are looking for a less then average evening out then Jim's is for you. I'm off to look for real BBQ stop where there is some good old southern hospitality. Pros: Pros. What? Cons: Food, Service, Filthy Inside more

Good ribs, good service 8/28/2005

Good ribs, tasty side dishes and prompt service. My order of a 1/2 slab was out in maybe 5 five minutes after placing it. The server, Tamara(?), kept an eye on my drink and was friendly. The Key Lime pie was just right - and *not* day-glo green! Jim himself was working that night, and was cheerful to the guests. One suggestion: More napkins at the table. These are ribs we're talking about! Pros: Fast, Good sides, Mmmm...ribs Cons: More napkins, More blues music, Choice of sides? more

Former Red Hot's Now White Hot 6/11/2005

When this popular and tasty former Red Hot & Blue went independent, the big question was whether it would be better for the change. Simply: Yes. The meats, particularly St. Louis ribs, are even better than before, the sides remain solid and, most notably, a wider variety of sauces are all absolutely outstanding. The ""original"" sauce could bump others off the grocery shelves; we carry a pint or two home after every trip. And the desserts are so good you may want to start your meal with the peanut butter pie, key lime pie or pecan cobbler. more
