Phenomenal California with a French accent 11/11/2006

This was my 4th visit in 6 months. Again, Exceptional service, from the first step through the door. The food is phenomenal. I brought my wife, my sister and brother-in-law. Pan Roasted New Zealand r ack of Lamb, we split this as an appetizer. MMMMMM-MM-MMM. Rib-Eye Steak incredible, Caramelized Pork Chop Potato Samosas, Pepper Crusted Hawaiian Ahi Tuna. If you like fused martinis they have you flavor.\r Chef Raphael thanks for another perfect evening. We will be back! Pros: Everything more

amazing food, romantic ambience, great service 11/3/2006

Made a reservation an hour before on a Friday night, and was given a great table (ask for a table upstairs by the balcony). I loved the ambience from the moment I walked in, the dining room was warm and elegant, very classic French. The food at Jiraffe is definitely a cut above, absolutely DIVINE! I had the pork chops (highly recommended!) which were amazing tender and flavorful, and the spiced apple chutney was something I'll be raving about for weeks, the best I've ever tasted, sweet but with a spicy kick to it (the server told me they added some crushed red pepper flakes). My boyfriend had the house specialty (some sort of fish I forgot the name), and he absolutely loved it. I have to say the portions were more than generous. My boyfriend is like a black hole when it comes to eating, and after giving him half of my plate, he said he was stuffed, that's how generous the portions are! Let me not leave out the best part, (dessert of course!) which will not dissappoint. We got the banana cream pie which had a delicate flaky crust and carmelized bananas on top with a rich but light cream filling. It was amazing, I was basically scraping the plate. \r \r Service was great. Our server was really friendly, definitely had a sense of humor, and always attentive. He was also really helpful about wine pairings and more than willing to let us sample the different wines.\r \r The only potential downside is the parking situation. We parked at the third street parking structure which is $3 flat rate at night, and walked about two blocks. I personally didn't mind the walk, especially after dinner but if you're looking to park right outside, you may need to exercise some patience (I didn't see a valet).\r \r Jiraffe is a great place to go for a romantic evening out, I'm definitely planning on going again!\r Pros: food, service, ambience Cons: street parking may be hard to find more

Out of this world Service and Food!!! 10/29/2006

From the moment we walked through the door the service received was uncomparable! The hostess and servers were very warm and friendly, and truly went above and beyond. To top it off every course served was melt in your mouth delicious! Highly recommended. more

Tiny space, but big flavor 10/21/2006

The appetizers, specifically the Tomato Tarte was surberb. My chicken was a bit tough, but all the sauces on our dishes were amazing. I wouldn't come to JiRaffe without a reservation nor would I come just for a drink. The standing only bar area is tiny. The service and the sauces makes this a place worth visiting. Pros: Superb sauces, great service, easy valet Cons: Tiny bar area, a bit of a wait more

best attitude at the door/lamb chops 10/18/2006

i went to jiraffe last saturaday with my wife.We had a 8pm reservation but ended up waiting 45 minutes. The host was amazing by offering us free champagne and free appitzers. We were getting tired while waiting but his attitude made us more comfortable and relaxed. We had a great time.Thank you mr host who loves to talk about wine whose name i dont know.We will return to jiraffe on our next visit from new york soon.We need restaurants like jiraffe more and more great host's in los angeles like the one at jiraffe.Thank you for making a great effort to make our evening a delight. Pros: host at the door/great food Cons: long wait/un comfortable chairs more

Good food but inconsistent service 10/14/2006

We've been twice and the food was amazing both times. But we were hoping for the same good service we got the first time, and the second time we were sorely dissappointed. The host was unprofessional, and the waiter hardly put in any effort. Either we got unlucky, or their standards are going down. more

the bellweather 10/12/2006

to keep it brief, I haven't been to Jiraffe for over 2 years, but it still sets the standard by which I judge all other restaurants. The service was amazing, I don't remember any problems with the noise (I believe we went on Sunday), and my girlfriend's pear salad was SO delicious, I can still taste it when I think about it. On a side note, I had a chance to chat with the owner himself when I went back to pick up my credit card which I had forgotten, and it was a real treat. Just a down-to-earth guy who honestly cares about what he does! Pros: food, service, decor Cons: no real complaints! (get reservations) more

service and food 7/26/2006

I called to make reservation at jiraffe and told the person who answered the phone that it was my first anniversary so please give us a romantic table. On arrival was greeted by a polite and sweet host who gave us a great table by the window. The evening was amazing from food to service.Thank you jiraffe for making the best evening for me and my wife.you will be seeing us on a regular basis. Pros: food, service, host at the door Cons: gets too loud more

best food in los angeles 7/3/2006

i am new to santa monica, just moved here recently from new york and still discovering new restaurants.i called to make a reservation, and got a nice table upstairs.let me tell you what a great experience i had dining at jiraffe.I have to say the food is astounding, service the best and the host very pleasant with no attitude and great manners.i would certainly recommend jiraffe to my business clients and associates.there are so many restaurants to choose from in la but nothing tops jiraffe's food, ambience, attitude at the door, service.i love jiraffe and cant wait to be back next week with my fiancee. Pros: host, service, food more

Overrated 7/2/2006

While JiRaffe's interior is exquisite, that's about all the credit I can give it. The food is good, but not outstanding, and it lacks the uniqueness and vision I expected from such a hyped restaurant. The main dining floor is cramped with far too many chairs and tiny tables. The high ceilings make for an obscenely noisy dining experience, especially if there is a party on the upper floor. I had to literally scream across our cramped table to talk with my dining partner, and even then conversation was all but impossible. Our server basically forgot we were there, never filling our wine and water glasses or clearing our plates. We had to ask another waiter to give us the check. All in all, a pretty interior and good food does not make up for the overall dining experience. I'm sure there are other French restaurants with equally good cuisine, and you won't have to lose your voice during dinner. Pros: well decorated interior, good food Cons: poor service, too loud and crowded more

politeness gets you everywhere 7/1/2006

i went to jiraffe with my friends for the first time last night.I have to say on arrival was greeted by a very well dressed and polite host.To me the first impression of a restaurant is the attitude at the door before being seated.the wait was only twenty minutes, and we were seated by the host and after he seated us he pulled the chair for my girlfriend which was a great gentlemanly gesture.we had a great meal at jiraffe, and great service as well.I would recommend jiraffe to all my friends.thank you jiraffe and the host, whose name i dont know but he had a slight british accent.i love to eat out,and entertain my friends and jiraffe would be my first choice. Pros: great host, great food more

Atmosphere can't make up for mediocre food. 5/19/2006

Starters: Foie Gras and Scallops on Endive. Foie Gras was served with grilled mango. The combination of the sweetness from the mango plus the sear on the foie gras made it taste exactly like pineapple upside down cake. Gross. Secondly, the scallops very tasty BUT I almost broke a tooth on a small piece of shell. When I told the server, she stated, ""we don't shell them here. "" Poor service. Main Course: The Veal Osso Bucco had typical ""hotel food"" sauce, it might as well have been served at a upscale wedding. It was under caramelized and had no depth of flavor. Desert: The caramelized bananas on my tart were dried out and flavorless. The custard = jello pudding. I've had better pastry from Gelsons or Whole Foods. Deserts were also WAY over chiled. Pros: Nice atmosphere, Good location, Easy street parking Cons: Poor Service, Mediocre Food, Poor deserts more

A magical dining experience. 4/22/2006

We made a reservation and were promptly seated at the perfect romantic table. The food was absolutely delicious and the friendliness and attentiveness of the waiter made the dining experience phenomenal. The pork chop were better than you could ever imagine. The attention to detail in both the food and the staff make the restaurant well worth the money. Don't trust the online menu, but you will be happy anyways. The portion size was surprisingly large for an upscale restaurant and we left happy and full, not a feeling which is common for such restaurants. Pros: food, service, atmosphere more

Not very impressed at the priace range 4/1/2006

We ordered crab salad and the pepper crusted ahi tuna, and we weren't impressed. The tuna was fresh and tender, but the pepper was just overpowering and we couldn't taste the tuna. And the soy-saucey base soup was just a little odd, the dish wasn't as delicate as I expected. I felt more like I was eating a big chuck of steak, with japanese noodles. I didn't get the whole Asian-fusion thing. Crab salad was okay, I ordered it because the waiter recommended it. I must say, I've had better ones before. However, service was fantastic, nice ambience, perfect for dates. And the place was easy to find. I wasn't disappointed, but not impressed, either, especially at this price range. You can get better stuff in Napa Valley Grille, their duck is surperb, and better wine list, too. I will probably come back, just because it's just a cute restaurant. Pros: nice ambience, easy to find, perfect for dates Cons: ok food, ok wine(glass) opt. more

A Wonderful Meal 1/24/2006

I tried JiRaffe a couple weeks ago for an anniversary dinner, and was very impressed. Althought the downstairs room (where we sat) is a bit cramped, the attentive service and delicious food more than makes up for it. I wasn't expecting an amuse bouche to start off the meal (typically reserved for the really ritzy places), and our entrees were perfect. We ordered a lemon souffle to go, because we couldn't eat any more!, and we paid the check and went outside. A few seconds later the maitre d' rushed outside with our souffle, because we had forgotten to wait for it! Now that's service! Pros: Food, Service, Not too pricey Cons: Crowded more

A Superb Meal Out 11/27/2005

I've been here three times in the last six weeks and the food and service are fantastic. The food is ram-packed full of flavor and on the occassion we were sat next to an over-loud double date the waitress moved us to a quieter table before they had even got on our nerves. Highly recomended. Pros: food, service more

tasty, tasty, tasty! 9/30/2005

my husband and i came here for our anniversary on high reviews and we were not dissapointed! our server was curtious and quite prompt, with only one small error about a second glass of wine...despite the fact of it being a busy friday night. the prices are high, but the staff was very helpfull and attentive. the food was incredible! neither of us received small entree portions and we both left quite full. also, we were offerred the corner table on the street level...request this table if you can. well worth the money spent!!! Pros: decor, food, curtious staff Cons: parking more

YUMMY.... 6/5/2005

The food is very rich w/ flavor and the staff is great especially the owner... Every time I come to the restaurant he comes to my table says hello and give me a huge hug and thanks me for choosing his restaurant. I've even seen him out at the local Farmer's Markets getting fresh produce for the restaurant. Gotta go! You'll never forget that Caramelized Banana cream pie, it's to DIE FOR!! Pros: Great Drinks, Yummy Food, Delicious Desserts more

Great Food at a fair Price 5/26/2005

A small group of us dined at JiRaffe last night and we were very impressed with the quality and quality of the food. Everything was delicious and nine courses split 4 ways worked perfectly. Outstanding Roast Chicken, Rack of Lamb, Roasted Beet Salad, Duck Breast. more

nothing special 5/22/2005

food was not bad, but I was NOT impressed...so many other good places in LA. Service was POOR! Restaurant was very hot. We were seated promptly, as it was not busy on a weekend night. I just wasnt knocked out by it. Eh.... Pros: location Cons: horrible service more
