I was watching this place Jay Bee's on the Food Channel and I also don't live far from there so I had interest of driving there, but after reading some reviews on customer service and additudes believe me I rather eat at Tony Roma's . Believe I know as a store owner myself ""Customers service is number one"" no matter if the customer is right or wrong it's the way to make them wanna come back for more let the product speak for itself . Once the owner gets too cocky for his customers don't expect that person to come back and then spread the news for others to stay away. 1 person + friends = lost of BIG >> $$$$$$$ more

THIS WAS MY VERY FIRST TIME COMING TO THE RESTARAUNT. I WAS SO VERY EXCITED BECAUSE I HAD SEEN THE RESTARAUNT ON (DINERS DRIVE-INS AD DIVES). SO I ASKED MY SISTER IN LAW TO ACCOMPANY ME THERE FOR LUNCH. WELL WE DIDNT MAKE LUNCH SO I JUST BROUGHT MY YOUNGEST DAUGHTER AND SET OUT TO FIND THE PLACE. THERE WASNT A VERY LONG LINE AND I WAS HAPPY FOR THAT. BUT AFTER I REACHED THE WINDOW EVERYTHING WENT DOWN HILL TO ME. I ORDERED AND COULDNT DECIDE WHETHER I WANTED HOT OR MILD SAUCE. SO I ASKED FOR A SAMPLE OF THE HOT SAUCE. AND WHAT DID I DO THAT FOR. THE CASHIER TOLD THE OWNER WHOSE NAME I DIDNT CATCH AND SHE LOOKED OVER AT ME AND SORT OF ROLLED HER EYES AT ME AND TOLD THE CASHIER IN A NOT SO FRIENDLY WAY (JUST TAKE THE NEXT CUSTOMER). AND THEN SHE WALKED AWAY AS IF TO IGNOR ME. SO MY DAUFGTER SAID MOMMY WHY DID SHE SAY IT LIKE THAT AND THEN JUST WALK AWAY? I WAS REALLY EMBARRASSED IN FRONT OF THE OTHER CUSTOMERS. AS I WAITED FOR MY ORDER I THOUGHT TO MYSELF MAYBE I WASNT SUPPOSED TO ASK TO TASTE THE SAUCE. THEN FINALLY WHEN MY ORDER WAS READY THE CASHIER SAID TO ME OH YOU WANTED TO TASTE THE SAUCE HUH? SHE ONCE AGAIN TOLD THE OWNER THAT I WANTED TO TASTE THE HOT SAUCE. SO THE OWNER GOT A FORK AND SAID IN A LOUD VOICE WHEN SOMEONE WANTS TO TASTE THE SAUSE YOU GIVE IT TO THEM LIKE THIS. THEN SHE DIPPED THE FORK IN THE SAUCE AND HANDED IT OUT OF THE WINDOW TO ME. EVERYONE WAS LOOKING AT ME AND SOME WERE SORT OF LAUGHING AND I WAS EVEN MORE EMBARRASSED THEN BEFORE. I THOUGHT THAT WAS VERY RUDE OF HER BEING THE OWNER OF THIS ESTABLISHMENT. BUT SHE SPENT MOST OF THE TIME LAUGHING AND JOKING WITH THIS MAN WHO I GUESS WAS A REGULAR SO HE WAS TREATED POLITELY. BUT ANYWAY I ORDERED A COMBINATION SLICED BEEF AND BEEF LINKS. AND WHEN I BIT INTO IT I FELT THAT IT WASNT EVEN WORTH THE TRIP THAT I MADE FOR IT. I visited this place on 6/14/2008; the first thing I noticed is that they have a B grade yuck! I decided that we traveled so far, I might as well try it. The lady at the register made me feel uncomfortable and guilty for using my debit card, she advised me to bring cash next time because apparently they were going to charge more for debit card transactions the following week. I bought a sampling for the entire office so we could try everything!! The pork ribs were excellent! I loved the Hot BBQ sauce, it was a bit too hot for only 1, he's weak! lol The medium had a small kick but the kick of the Hot was perfect to me! We got the pork shoulder, very tender! And a pulled pork sandwich, it had a lot of sauce and if you are one for not a lot of heat, get medium sauce on this one. We got the Beef Ribs, a little tough; I'd stick with the pork, which were perfectly cooked. This is a true BBQ joint, not a cheesy boiled rib place. The Mac and Cheese, so yummy, authentic mac and cheese for those who have never tried it! Coleslaw was not overly dressed and very good. Beans were perfectly cooked and tasted oh so delicious! I kinda went with the other reviews on my side sampling. The coleslaw they ran out of I heard them tell people say so get it while they got it! Oh and the sweet potato pie, yum, yum! The sodas were canned and so cold! So venture out and try this place. There was a great mix of customers, everyone was friendly and hungry for BBQ. Great BBQ brings people together and this is great BBQ. There was a bit of a wait for our big 'ol order, 35 minutes. But those who ordered just a sandwich had them lickety split! The lady at the front counter was very pleasant and helpful. I will definetly be back. I bought a bottle of their Hot BBQ sauce to try to relive the delicious experience brought to you by Jay Bee's! I recently saw this place being showcased on Food TV network, and decided to try it out. My wife and I arrived around 1:30 pm and saw that there were about 10 people waiting for their food. This is usually a good sign when you see people waiting after the lunch hours. We ordered what they showed on the TV, and it took almost 40 minutes before our number was called to pick up our food. The pulled pork sandwich was not bad, but it didn't have enough coleslaw like the one they showed on TV. As for the flavor, I wasn't disappointed. Would I ever go back? I guess I would as long as I was in the neighborhood, which means I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again. My friend told me about this place and he said his friend found out about here from a Food Network program. He couldn't remember exactly where it was (and he told me the name was ""BJ's"" instead of ""Jay Bee's"") but it was easy for me to find them on Citysearch. I've got a pork shoulder BBQ sandwich, mac n cheese, sweet potato pie and a soda. I got there at 6 pm and when I parked, 3 people were leaving and there was nobody waiting. Unlike the previous reviews, the lady at the counter was smiling and very friendly and helpful. Another reviewer said the sandwich was kind of small, but when I got mine, it was pretty big (I say it had more volume than a Big Mac) and very satisfying, oh and yes, it was DELICIOUS! Except those 2 or 3 plastic tables and chairs outside of this tiny ""shack"", there are no seating area; this place is for to-go orders. This Citysearch info doesn't say so but they also take credit cards. Now, about the area, sure, it is an industrial area and sure, they did have that protective glass or whatever it's called, but other than that, I didn't think it was THAT scary place to go to. My favorite BBQ, period. The taste is great and the portions are generous. The price is extremely fair, a two-meat combination (beef ribs and slice beef with double baked beans) with a tall can of Arizona Ice Tea for about $14. Can you beat that anywhere? When I attended Dominguez, my roommate and I would always go to Jay Bee's and enjoyed the BBQ beef sandwich. This was our spot after a hard day of studying. Well I was craving some BBQ and decided to check out the old spot. That was about 8 years ago and I haven't been back since. I cannot stand it when someone is rude and unprofessional when handling my food. At the very least you can smile and greet your customer. This was new to me because I remember this place being really friendly. The person who was taking my order was huffing and puffing, wasn't helpful with the specials, and just had an all around nasty attitude. Needless to say, I left without the BBQ because I refused to give them my money and be treated like I wasn't a valued customer. The BBQ wasn't great at all. I frequented the place because of the good BBQ and the GREAT service. I was so happy when Lucille's stomped into town. At least they care about customer service AND the food is great. Ordered the pork shoulder sandwich and pork ribs. Yummy! Tangy sauce and addicting. Yes it's like walking up to a bank teller with the bulletproof plexi glass and all those iron bars...but who cares??!! The line alone tells a different story. Don't know what previous poster ""aces..."" was talking about being a white chick and people staring at her. When I was there 80% of the people in line were white. Maybe she was dressed like a ""..."" that's why people were staring. Definitely not because she's white. And I stayed there a good 2 hrs. Still 80% were white and line was getting longer...She's definitely never been to worse places. Suggest she stays in Westside and leave the really good food to us. That's one less person in line.. I'm a white girl from the westside...I don't get scared easily and didn't think there would be any problem with me driving towards Compton alone since I've been in LA all my life. Gotta say...people wouldn't stop staring at me, or my car, or my purse and I basically got my food and left as quickly as possible. I was the only white person in sight and everyone made me feel extremely out of place. I would never go there at night, and would never go back without a man with me. Visited the shack - twice now. Both times - the food itself was worth the drive into a secluded primarily industrial area of Gardena. The BBQ is excellent, great smoky flavor. The price is reasonable. The ATTITUDE is way too much. The cockiness of the owner - whose personality compares to sand-paper, is rude, crude and outright demeaning. I hate having to deal with any of ""her"" ""workers' - who blatantly ask my assistant out on a date BOTH times we have gone! If the Lady would let go of the reins, this place would be great - hire someone with a more pleasing personality. Also some improvements to the ""shack"" would be ideal, like perhaps removing the 2"" bullet proof plastic counter and use up the ridiculous entry that fits 2 people but is forced to fit 10 when ordering. The food is great when it is fresh... However, when it is not fresh, the taste matches the location of the place. I've only had one good visit of the 2 times I have been to the shack. The 1st time around, I was skeptical since he place did not look clean including those that worked there. When I tasted it the fisrt time, it was great -- slightly better than Lucille's. The second time, I can tell that the meat was not freash and had a ""funny"" tasted which caused me to throw out $40 worth of meat. Overall, I would not recommend this place! The place is in a bad location and the risk of something happening to you for mediocre BBQ is not worth it. I would have to agree with the previous comment made about this place... This place is good but it's in a bad area. I've been there a little over 10 times and the food is always good. It's very easy to over eat at this place. If you don't mind going into a semi-dangerous area to get some ribs, then I say try it. if you're not black, keep an eye open.
