I LOVE THIS PLACE!! Cafeteria style ordering not my fave, but the food was great, price great, service great and atmosphere really nice, especially the outdoor patio. Love. more

Fabulous! 1/24/2011

I just wanted to show my support for Jade. I've been living in Portland for a year and a half and people have been very willing to take me to wonderful places to eat. Jade has out shone every other restaurant I've been to. The food is simply yummy! Fresh and bursting with flavor. The staff have always been friendly and very helpful, even when I've asked for a bit more of something to take home: ] Wonderful! more

Don't Linger 12/10/2010

Usually I can't say enough good things about Jade and their food. But today, I had a surprisingly unpleasant experience there. I arrived before the lunch rush and ordered lunch and a large pot of tea. I planned to study a bit while I ate. After finishing lunch, and enjoying my tea, the restaurant became busier. I was there about an hour, and the owner asked me to leave, stating that there was a 30 minute limit on tables only ordering tea. I told her I already ordered my lunch, and was finishing my tea, and that I planned to order some dessert after the line declined. However, I told her that I would be happy to leave if she did not want my business. She essentially indicated that if I wanted to order more food, then I would be welcome to stay, but otherwise, I need to finish so she could make room for other (paying) customers. Given that I wasn't there an inordinate amount of time, and I had not even finished what I ordered, I was surprised by how eager she was to push me out the door. I understand that popular businesses struggle with managing a lunch rush, I just feel like there is a more tactful way to handle such situations. I am really appalled by the service and I feel that the owner's approach was extremely unprofessional. I don't have plans to return, which is unfortunate, because I like their food and I live in the neighborhood. My advice - - great food, don't expect to linger or you may be pushed out the door before you're finished. more

Good Food, Service is Horrible 10/20/2010

First off, Jade Teahouse is having an identity crisis... They simply need to decide if they are a teahouse with food or a restaurant with tea. The food was excellent but the service was absolutely horrible. You have to get your own silverware half of which was dirty. No help even when we were with a little child. So Jade people if you are reading this... you have amazing potential just pull it together make a little more effort - like clean silverware and make your patrons feel welcome. Even if its just napkins on the table with some silverware, that would work for me. Do this and this rating will go up to at least 4 stars. more

Really good!!! 8/27/2010

I have been several times and my only complaint is the line you have to wait in. This place is simply too small for the number of people eating there during prime time! To me that a good thing. Fresh and affordable, this place consistently makes good food. more

Oh so very, very good! 5/18/2010

I go to Jade as much as possible and I have never ordered or tasted from friends plates anything that was not really oh so darn good. Go, you will not be disappointed. Pros: Every bite is delectable. Affordable. Cons: I wish they had table service. more

Best place ever! 12/15/2009

I love, love, love Jade Teahouse! The Vietnamese meatball sandwich (banh mi style) is the best I've ever had. Try the Pho, try the coconut rice noodle soup. Everything is delicious. Oh, and be sure and order the truffle fries for the table - you will not be disappointed. And the people are so nice. There's April, Josh, Lucy, and Mark; it's a family business. Pros: Awesome Pho, Banh Mi, Truffle Fries Cons: Can't think of any more

Feels like home 11/16/2009

There's a lot we love about Jade. The homestyle Southeast asian cuisine, truffle fries, the bahn mi, the family friendliness. It's our go to spot pretty much anytime we're hungry. Admittedly it's sort of an addiction. It started about a year ago. We were in the neighborhood grabbing lunch at Garden State and stopped in for tea. April and my wife hit it off immediately. A few weeks later we were back for Vietnamese sandwiches. Then it was the Hum Bao, then the Snapper and the grilled eggplant, then for months I was hooked on the Yellow Chicken Curry. They've made it the type of place where you want to linger, to chill. It's become the neighborhood hangout spot, and now that we live in the area we're hear even more often. My latest addiction's been the fresh wide noodles, essentially a Pad See Ew, but better. That, that and the udon. Ha, and I haven't even started on the tea and desserts. Yes, addicted to those too. It's weird confessing all this, I just think it's about time someone gave this joint the love it deserves. Pros: Friendly atmosphere, fantastic Southeast Asian food Cons: Long waits on Friday and Staurday nights. more

Amazing Food & Ambience 11/16/2009

I can't say enough good things about this place! I saw it written up in the A &E and decided to check it out. The menu is mouthwatering with lots of great choices. Everything seems to be made fresh and the portions are large. The beef noodle soup (Pho) is to die for. The baguettes and pasteries are all made in-house. There is an awesome tea menu for the tea lovers. The place is beautifully decorated with calming colors and bamboo. I will keep coming back! Pros: Delicious food, friendly staff, great atmosphere Cons: Word is getting out so sometimes there is a line more

Terrible service and food! 11/4/2009

My friend and I were eating at a Thai restaurant across the street from Jade and watched as people flocked into Jade. This struck our interest and the next day, we tried Jade for lunch. I can not emphasize enough just how disappointed we were in the food, the service and the entire experience. We will NEVER go back. Pros: Friendly owner more

Bad Food and Bad Service 10/16/2009

This place doesn't even deserve a star. My BF and I ordered take-out from here because we live a few blocks from the place. They not only screwed up our order TWICE (putting red peppers in all the dishes we ordered after we specified I had an allergy then putting them in the dish we re-ordered) but the food was sub par and one dish was inedible. My BF took one bite of it, spit it out, and threw it in the trash. I will NEVER eat there again. more

Disappointed that I'm disappointed :( 4/9/2009

I've been hearing about this place and heard rave reviews about the green cake so I had to head down to Sellwood to try it out! (I live way out in the Gresham area....) I was so disappointed, and I wish I wasn't! The cake was so dry (so dry!) and as another reviewer had stated the cream was quite dense due to the cooler temperature. I looked at the food that came out and thought those looked so good and was thinking about coming back, but I'm not sure I will. I don't want to be disappointed again :( Pros: Friendly service, clean Cons: the cake! :( more

Really Salty Sandwich 3/27/2009

My husband and I had been reading good things about this establishment, so instead of heading for Binh Minh on Saturday March 21, we decided to give them a try. We were pleased with the loveliness of your facility and friendliness of staff, and settled in for what we hoped would be equally pleasing food. Unfortunately, the drunken chicken baguette and meatball baguette were excruciatingly salty. Almost to the point of being inedible. I'm guessing the problem was in the sauce, since when not biting into meat or sauce, the bread and vegetable combination seemed fine. It was almost as if the sauce had inadvertently been salted twice. We decided to take a chance on the pandanus cake we'd heard so much about, and it is quite delicious, with one suggestion for improvement. The cake was cold so the frosting on top was hard and difficult to cut into with a fork, like a 1/4 inch slab of butter, a potent reminder to the diner that what they are eating is loaded with unhealthy saturated fat that hardens when cold. It would have been nice to have that frosting soft to at least lessen the knowledge that what you're eating is incredibly high in fat, and that you don't know what kind, maybe transfat? There were many other things on the menu that looked interesting, and another table that had curry and noodle dishes said they were happy with their food, but there are many places in town that serve good banh mi that aren't too salty. It's a shame, because the bread and ingredients were very fine, much higher quality than at some other Vietnamese sandwich shops. Pros: Tasty desserts Cons: Overload of salt on the Baguette Sandwiches more

The Best Vietnamese Sandwich In Town 1/7/2009

As long as I have lived in Portland I have been on a search for a perfect Bahn Mi (Vietnames Sandwich). I am particularly fond of the barbecue pork sandwich. I learned that the baguettes and all of the pastries at Jade are baked in house. The baguette was the amazing! On the few visits to Jade I also tried out a few of the many teas they offer. I was very impressed by the taste and blends of the teas. The service was very friendly, as well! Pros: Vietnamese Sandwiches, Tea Selection more

  • We are unlike any teahouse you've ever visited. Jade is the story of the blending of very distinct cultures. East and West, Indochine; French colonial Vietnam. A unique cuisine grew from France's 70 plus years in Vietnam. We are inspired by this and our unique menu draws on both cuisines.

We are excited to be a part of such a community based neighborhood as Sellwood. We invite you to visit Jade to relax, catch up with friends, play a board game or use wifi.

Tea is healthy, tasty, fascinating, varied and full of history. Drinking tea helps us connect to the moment. Tea is a path to wellness. We encourage you to explore our vast seasonal selection of artisan teas. Water is a universal life force.
