Selah really ought to take this concept and replicate it in the District of Columbia. Why? Because I live there. I had the opportunity to get a cut at Selah... I wanted a barber... a quick stop in White Plains... close to where I work. I stumbled across Selah and this hairdresser (barber??) named Alex. After several drinks... I actually found myself having a conversation with the person cutting my hair. Never before. I usually sit and stare at the mirror -- a couple of drinks before a haircut is a crazy... but incredibly thoughtful and oddly appropriate concept. It works... very well. At the end of her work day, Alex doesn't wonder "how was your day"... she asks "did you have fun today?"... that's her job... it is fun. She's detailed... she's as meticulous as you'll find... but don't let that fool you... because she thoroughly enjoys her job. I had fun that day... enjoyed both the drinks and the cut. I love Alex Jackson...she delivers beautiful color and cut every time, in fact, I my husband and two coworkers go to her now and a friend is on her way! Alex truly listens, makes thoughtful suggestions and will not let you leave unhappy. In fact, she created my look for my wedding...and actually sat with me twice to make sure we had the perfect plan. My hair, as well as all my bridesmaids', was absolutely perfect. She captured my event. They even let us have a huge spead with mimosas for my bridal party- we had the best time!!! The staff is great. No job is too large for Alex. I am just scared she will be famous one day and I will have to find someone else!!!!! I've been looking for a new stylist for over 6 years now after moving away from my stylist of almost 15 years. I've gotten used to getting a haircut and then coming home and spending an hour in front of a mirror "fixing" it. After getting my hair cut today by Maria, I spent an hour in front of the mirror in total awe. Finally!! Hands down the best haircut I've ever had. After our initial conversation it was obvious that Maria is a total professional and truly loves what she does. She fussed over my hair almost as much as I do!!! After 6 long years I've finally found someone I would trust completely with my hair. I can't wait to see what she does with my color!! Everyone at Selah was super friendly and the salon has a really great vibe.....very cool but not the slightest bit pretentious. After visiting most of the salons in White Plains at one time or another, Selah Salon is the only one I would recommend. For the first time in I don't know how long, a stranger actually complimented my hair today. Even my 13 yr. old son said it looks "awesome!" Thanks Maria!! To begin, I must confess that I am a stylist at Selah Salon. But this was the first time time in my almost 3 years of employment that I literally opened myself up to a wax with Jackie! I never would have considered myself a prude, but I came to realise that that was what was holding me back! LOL! Anyway, she treated my service as though I was a stranger receiving a service, not her coworker! Before I knew it she was done, and everything was gone! What a delightful experience!!!! I am so excited about this experience that I had to write about me experience even as a coworker! Thank you Jackie! Pros: So respectfully understanding!!!! Selah’s Salon Lounge was my last minute “Google” rescue. A few days before the last minute rescue, a stylist per recommendation butchered my hair- bangs and all. I asked for trendy, and received a “did you cut your own hair” look. Unsettled and defeated, I turned to Google’s search for a fix. After all, what did I have to lose? The search consisted of the following words: Trendy, chic, modern salon in Westchester County NY. Google’s first listing: Selah’s Salon Lounge. With a stunning 70+ all star review, I decided to give them a call. Selah’s receptionist was incredibly courteous and seemed to ask all the right questions. In addition to a friendly voice, Selah’s midweek hours were until 9 p.m. I quickly told the receptionist I needed a color and cut fix asap. She suggested Maria who loves makeovers, and will go edgy but not over the top. I booked a same day appointment! Besides the staff being super courteous, the salon looked incredibly hip. Maria greeted me with a few questions on my overall goal with the cut. I told her edgy, hip and modern. I also added the words “pink highlights.” Maria did something no other stylist had done for me: She defined what a STYLIST does. I had become conditioned to stylists asking ME for direction. I’m not a hairstylist! I can offer business tips – but not hair instructions! (Isn’t that the point of going to a hairstylist?) Maria quickly said no to pink, and also suggested a cut option to bring me from drab to fab. Copper highlights and an hip cut to fit my giggly personality. I walked into Selah’s as a 31 year old college student and left as a hip and cool chick. Pricing for her work: Incredible! One can’t go wrong with an expert stylist and great pricing. My hair belongs to Maria! Selah’s Salon gets 5 stars!!! Maria is experienced at her profession, and her confidence transcends onto the client. Pros: hip - modern - relaxing Cons: none! more

I was so happy to find Selah Salon and was especially happy in having my hair cut by Maria. My hair is very long and very thick and while I liked having long hair, it was very blah. Maria took one look at me and said that I looked like a college study and took my hair into her extremely capable hands. First of all, she actually took the time to play with my hair to get a feel of it. Most stylists are quick to send you off to the shampoo station and then just start attacking with scissors. I eventually did make it to the shampoo station, where the shampoo girl was very gentle and gave a great scalp massage. Back to the chair I went and Maria started her magic. She cut my hair that not only highlighted my facial features but also she kept the length while taking off the weight. She kept checking to make sure that my hair was "connected" - front to the angles, angles to the back. I walked out of the salon with a great cut that even my husband loved and just boosted my confidence. Maria was also very polite. She was training a new stylist and asked me if she could use me as an teaching aid which I did not mind at all. I actually learned something in the process! I can't wait to go back and let Maria take a stab at coloring my hair! You would be crazy not giving Selah a chance. Pros: The whole experience was fantastic Cons: None more

Being new to white plains, finding a hair salon i'd really enjoy wasnt high on my priority list - but stumbling across Selah Salon was a great experience. Conveniently in downtown white plains, this unique setting really adds charm and character to getting a haircut. They were very accommodating to my busy schedule, even when running a little late - and after a long day at work, being offered a beer was a great plus. Maria really knew her stuff - knew how my hair grew, what it needed to keep it under control. I'm very critical with those cutting my hair, but she really knew what she was doing and did it well! I'm very pleased, and can't wait to go back for another haircut, or even a drink one night. Pros: Great service, in a great setting, and easy to get to! Cons: Didn't find them sooner! more

I have very dark brown hair and wanted to go blonde. Maria suggested we start at the beginning of the year and every few months we go lighter. Suggesting a gradual color change would not ruin my hair and over process it. I am almost at the end of the process and could not be any happier. They are a fantastic bunch at the salon that always will stop and take a minute to say "hello". I will never go elsewhere. Pros: Great Service, Clean, Affordable Cons: None more

I was so happy to find Jackie at Selah Salon Lounge. I was searching for a local place that did Brazilian waxing where you could buy your own wax. Jackie is thorough, professional and quick. I have been going to Jackie for over 3 months now and will never search for a waxing place outside of NYC again! I love that she is right in White Plains so I don't have to trek into the city. I've been to J's Sisters in the city and I prefer Jackie! Plus you get an occasional glass of wine to take the edge off! Also I used the Emla cream and it works great to numb the area. My first trip to this salon and all I can say is amazing! Alex is so skilled as a colorist/stylist and I highly highly recommend her!! She listened intently to what I wanted, but also provided helpful suggestions about what would work best for low maintenance down the line. Super friendly and chatty - what a nice change from stuffy salons that I've visited previously. Give it a try - you won't be disappointed. David came highly recommended to me by my cousin. When I saw how great she looked, I had to know who she used and I called immediately for an appointment. She only got a cut, but I was looking to also do some highlights. I'd been disappointed in the past so I was afraid to try again. David did such a beautiful job on her cut, that it gave me the courage to trust one more time to go for the highlights. WOW!! I left the salon that day looking like I just walked out of a magazine photo shoot! What an incredible job he did. The color is perfect for me and the highlights look so natural! David took the time to explain everything to me, and listen to what I wanted, and I felt so comfortable with him. I will follow him wherever he goes!!! My cousin told me that David is one of the independent stylists at the salon so I had to call his direct number for an appointment at 914-406-6656. The salon itself is so beautiful and classy. I recently had my hair done by Alex and I've been getting compliments from people ever since! She did beautiful highlights that really compliment my coloring and the cut is great! She layered my hair in a way where it moves nicely and it looks great curly or straight! I love my hair and will defintely be going back for both color and cut in the future! I went for my first brazilian after my friend and I had decided we wanted to get one together. We found Jackie on CitySearch and saw all the amazing reviews, so we figured it couldn't be too bad. We were both extremely happy with our brazilians. Jackie let us sit in the same room, made us feel extremely comfortable, explained what she was doing, and made us laugh with the good conversation. What we thought would be an utterly uncomfortable experience was in fact a wonderful, spa-like experience. I am definitely going back and recommend Jackie to anyone else who wants a brazilian!! more

Yesterday was my first experience at Selah and it was with Alex Jackson. I have never been to a stylist who made me feel as comfortable as she did. for my first brazilian, i wanted to make sure i was going somewhere reputable. jackie at selah not only came with raving online reviews but also recommendations from people i knew. i had been fearing the pain of my hair being wrenched out down there, but--believe it or not--i actually ended up laughing during the procedure. I started going to Selah because of the great reviews on CitySearch for Jackie's Brazilian waxes. They were right, she's great-- quick, friendly and professional. While talking, I complained about my hair- haven't had a good haircut in years, no matter how much I spend! I thought I was destined to look frumpy for ever.
