Found something alive in my Beans! Rhymes with broach 9/25/2009

Once you find a rch in your beans, game over. I don't care how famous the bbq is -- there's baby blues in venice that's fantastic, and guess what? No rchs! Pros: Are you kidding? Cons: Rhymes with broach in my beans! more

best bbq in LA 9/15/2008

I don't write reviews on sites, whether ive had the best or worst food or service. i felt compelled to write this review, however, because JR's is excellent. the meat is fresh and slow-cooked to perfection. the spicy sauce is hotter than hell, but they put it on the side. they have sweet tea and excellent desserts. for other restaurants which have glowing reviews that drop the names of managers or the line cooks, it is obvious that the management writes the reviews themselves. But for J Rs, the hype is real. try it. more

best pork ribs 4/25/2008

JR's is a homey place that serves bbq really, really well. as soon as you walk in, you can smell that smokey-ness, which permeates the room. you know that they mean business. more

Average BBQ, Decor rates a zero out of 10 1/13/2008

I really wanted to like this place. I was happy to hear about it since there seems to be a shortage of BBQ restaurants in the area. Unfortunately, I've had better. The food was OK. I ordered the brisket. It came thinly sliced and swimming in a bath of BBQ sauce (too much). I ordered the medium sauce which was on par with what most places would call ""hot"". The sauce wasn't bas but the meat itself lacked flavor and was too fatty for my taste. The beans weren't bad. The french fries were actually potato wedges and were decent. I got my meal to-go and I am sure glad I did. To say this place is a dive would be putting it mildly. It's like a shack with a bunch of cheap tables and chairs. This place probably hasn't been freshed up in the last 30 years. I picked up my food around 6:30pm and there were only two tables seated in the whole place - not usually the sign of a great restaurant. Pros: Reasonable prices Cons: Terrible decor, average food more

Amazing BBQ, Great Service 1/6/2008

This place is amazing. The first time I ate there the owner guy upon finding out I was a first timer and was having trouble deciding, brought me out a sampler plate with all of the different kinds of meats! It was almost big enough for a full meal! I love this place and go there every time I'm in the area. Get the pork shoulder, it's incredible Pros: Amazing food, great sauce, great service Cons: it's way out in culver city! wish they had one in hollywood more

This is good, authentic barbecue. 12/7/2007

I try to go to JR's as often as I can-- this place serves real barbecue. I love the smokey flavor of their meat and their down home side dishes. The pork ribs are my favorite. There's a big old counter for communal eating and a seperate little room with a few individual tables. Service is super casual and super nice. And their selling their sauce in jars now, too! more

Sauce and beans are great 11/19/2007

I agree Phillips rules. Quality of meat has declined here. The beef ribs were just not beefy enough a la a Lucilles Pros: sauce and beans Cons: meat more

rude and unmannered 8/5/2007

I actually like the food there, and I ordered a platter and they made an error in my order. The man on the phone was not very gracious. If he had simply taken responsibility for the error and apologized instead of arguing with me, it would have been fine. Instead, he lost a good customer. I have also sent many people there and will cease to do so. Don't bother going there. There are other good barbeque places. more

Best BBQ in Los Angeles!! 5/5/2007

We discovered JR's BBQ after moving to the westside. I love BBQ, and have tried many of the spots around town. But I'd have to say, hands down, JR's is the best! My favorite is the combo - chicken/pork ribs, bbq beans, mac + cheese. The meat is tender and falls off the bone. The baked beans are amazing. A little bit sweet, a little bit smoky. Have talked to the owner to find out what the secret is. He'll only say that it's a 'family recipe'. If you want great BBQ, friendly service...this is the place to go. Pros: Great BBQ, eat in or take-out, parking more

Mother & Son team smokes the competion 7/30/2006

Ever since the Los Angeles Times said that Jr's Barbeque was the best barbeque joint on the westside of L.A. this place has smoked. I'd add Benny's BBQ for their incredible hot links & Mr. Cecils on Pico for those legendary beef ribs. These 3 BBQ palaces rule Hog Heaven on the westside. Jr's recipe for their absolutely delicious corn bread is a family heirloom as are the sauce recipes. You ain't had no BBQ until you sunk your teeth into a Jr. Barbeque beef brisket. They smoke it for 18 hours, low & slow for that truly real smokedhouse flavor. No gas charbroilers here, it's mesquite & wood or nothing. They do it right. Pros: Side dishes, sauces & brisket Cons: Closed on Sunday more

Some of the greatest this side of the Mississippi! 6/26/2006

When I was in Memphis, I visited practically every barbecue joint around, each equally scrumptious, and delectable enough to give me a two week heavenly peek into what I'd been missing, having grown up Jewish, and in the North. When at Interstate Barbeque (arguably one of the best, or so said the locals), I was talking to the proprietor about how there was no good barbeque in LA, and he sent me to JR's (run by his nephew, I believe). Boy, it lives up, and continues to every time I visit! The ribs are perfec, the sauces (I like to get 'em on the side) are tangy and just exactly mild, medium, or hot. All of the people who work there as well as the patrons are friendly to boot! My suggestion? Call ahead for a slab or two (spareribs are my choice), and go early to the hollywood bowl and make a picnic out of it! Just don't forget to grab a bunch of napkins! Pros: Fantastic ribs, people, and service! Cons: Can't think of anything! more

Searched for years for real 'cue in LA... 5/8/2006

Jeannie and Bobby (J&R) are real Memphis folks with real Memphis BBQ. Great grub, great people and a sincere, down-home atmosphere. This is my favorite restaurant in LA. Don't forget to try the Sock-it-to-me Cake if you have any room left after the ribs, pork brisket, chicken and links. Great beans and best potato salad in town, too. Pros: food, service more

good stuff 4/16/2006

nice, complex bbq sauce. this is memphis - style bbq, so don't expect the north carolina or texas style. i thought the pork ribs were fantastic, the links good - but i prefer phillips for those - brisket also great. can't go wrong with such a great sauce. i would hope that they could get that cornbread just nailed since the beans are so great. highly recommended. more

Used to be a great place!! 4/10/2006

Unfortunately, I've been noticing a decline in the quality of the food at JR's. Since I've been eating here (over the past 5 years), I have noticed that when his mother isn't present, the food loses some of its quality. The sauce has way too much vinegar and/or water and as a result, it doesn't even coat the meat. I hope they get it together in there because this was once a very fine restaurant. Pros: BBQ Baked Beans Cons: Inadequate Parking, Thin Runny BBQ Sauce, Not Open on Sundays more

Outstanding, shame I didn't try it sooner. 8/3/2005

Living in LA for the past 7 years I drive by JR's almost every day. I always wanted to try it but didn't get around to it until a few months ago. I've already been back once and I'm getting overdue. The chicken was a little dry, but the brisket, the ribs, and holy crap the baked beans, all fabulous, same with the mac&cheese and cole slaw. The chicken may have been an off day, I'll try it again. Pros: tasty food, hot BBQ sauce Cons: small parking lot more

BEST BBQ In LA 6/12/2005

I order my BBQ spicy and it is just fantastic. I live 15 miles away and make it a point to eat there as often as possible. Pros: FOOD!!!, Service, FOOD!!! Cons: parking, location, not closer to my home more

The best ""unknown"" BBQ restaurant 2/28/2005

Absolutely the best BBQ food I've had anywhere, and I can't pass a BBQ restaurant without stopping. The atmoshere is ok, but that's not why we go. The location could be better, but I will go out of my way for Bobby's food and hospitality . I suggest that he open additional laocations for my convenience. Pros: food, food, food Cons: parking more

Like home... 2/5/2005

I don't care who you are...rich, poor, just getting by...JR's is down right the best barbeque around. Growing up in a lower class family, my sister and I felt right at home at JR's. Paper plates and plastic forks and knives felt like mom was in the kitchen cooking. The staff is perfect for the food. They know what they are doing. Know what you want, and don't take your time placing your order. The hot sauce is HOT!!! ON FIRE HOT! I was bold, but know better. The place is old school...filled with autographs of celebs that love the food. You can't ask for better food, service and fun. Pros: Quality & Taste, Inexpensive, Great Staff Cons: Only one location more
