Really nice hotel, but... 7/2/2007

I must admit, at first glance, this hotel is 5 stars. Great views in rooms, great complimentaries for guests (chauffeured Buick ride, champagne, breakfast, etc.). Rooms are done with nice touches as well. Spacious bathroom, great colors, but if you take a look a little closer, (at least the room we were in) seemed to be put together a little less care. Our room lacked a fan, even though the vent was there, it looked like someone before us for some reason had taken it out. The privacy doors to the bathroom weren't flush...just little things though. HOWEVER, when we reported this to the front desk, they looked at us suspiciously like we had done it or maybe trying to get a discount. That was the other thing...the staff could have been a little more customer friendly. Kinda cold at the front desk...but all in all for the one night we stayed in the hotel, it was worth it. Pros: Great views, complimentaries, decent sized rooms Cons: Customer service more

Most unique hotel in the Pacific Northwest 2/1/2007

Where do I start. First off the hotel was built on the ruins of the old salmon cannery. It was built to look like the original building and with the yellow and red colors it really sets itself off. Because the hotle is on a pier, you are actually right over the water. Beware if you have a room on the first floor and the storms roll in, the water does come up on your balconey :-). When you check in the front desk gives you a list of all the ships coming and going into Port Astoria so you can indentify all of them. There are also a pair of binnoculars in each room to help pick out the ships. the rooms are very uniquely done. No matter where you are in the room, you can see the water. Their are shutters in the bathroom so you can wash up, take a shower, or bathe and see the water. Or you can always close them for privacy. Every room has a fireplace which adds to the romance. The granite and marble counter tops add to the scale. Oh yeah the sinks are cool. they are the kind where the bowl sits on top of the counter instead of being flush. Every evening their is a happy hour in the lounge that serves beer, wine, and some sort of snack. They had liquor when I was there, but I am not sure if that was left over from a party. The lounge area is 2 storys with a full library. My fiance and I mingled with other couples, watched the storms roll in, and relaxed. I have been all over the world and this is one my favorite hotels I have been too. This is a must see!!!! We are making this a tradition to stay in this hotel. I almost forgot the last time we were there the spa was not in service yet, but it is now and I have heard great things. Also the old pier to the west is owned by the hotel with plans to build a restaurant there. I can't wait!!!! Pros: neat atmosphere, great setting, views of the water, excellent staff, happy hour, library, romantic, and new spa with a restaruant coming Cons: a bit pricy but nice for those special occasions more

Fantastic, largely undiscovered hotel 9/8/2006

I just got here and already love this place. The hotel has a unique, airy, interesting architecture to it. The lobby feels very warm and inviting in a modern kind of way. The hotel itself sits on the Columbia with beautiful views of it and the bridge, and they claim that every room has a view of the water (I don't know whether this is true or not). My room has a huge king bed and lots of space. The bathroom is gorgeous, having both a shower and a bathtub. Next to the tub are shutters that optionally open a largish inside window to create a continuous space with the main room and so that someone on the bed can easily converse with someone luxuriating in the tub. There's a very inviting artificial gas fireplace, and a small patio hanging almost directly over the river. It's a very relaxing, beautiful place. My rate was $250/night, and I suspect if this hotel were anywhere else (and probably once it becomes more popular), it would be at least $400/night. So, though expensive compared to your run of the mill hotel, very much worth it. It stands in stark contrast to the Hampton Inn I stayed at in Crescent City, CA, which, at $200/night, wasn't so much bad as it was boring. Pros: beautiful design, beautiful view, spacious Cons: no room service more
