Editorial review from GrubHub 8/18/2013

Food was very solid. The rice was amazing, portions were very small. The chicken vindaloo came with 4 small bites of chicken and 1 piece of potato drenched in sauce. They were more generous with the paneer. Chicken tikka and veg samosa were both fantastic. I asked for one of the dishes to be prepared without cilantro (coriander) due to an allergy I have and they completely ignored me and it was loaded with cilantro. They also didn't include the raita in the order not sure if its due to cilantro being in it or they just forgot but there was no comment from them either way. Overall I would definitely order from here again. more

Great food, great service. We either eat there or order every week!!!! more

Editorial review from GrubHub 1/26/2013

This place isn't far from us, so we've eaten there several times, and had delivery as well. The food is good...we've always enjoyed what we ordered. Tonight, though, we ordered a dish that came with something extra...a screw. A bit shocking to bite down on it, but worse things have happened. The real problem developed when I called GrubHub to let them know. They were right on it, apologized, and called the restaurant while I was on hold. Apparently, though, the restaurant refused to take responsibility for it. GrubHub was great, though, put through a credit for the dish, and apologized again. But come on, Indus Valley...how hard is it to say "Sorry"? Things happen...I get it. No one intended to put a screw in my shrimp curry, but it happened. Apologize, make it right, and move on. Didn't happen, though, so we won't be ordering from there again. Not because of the screw, though, but because of the response to the screw. more

Terrible service, the food in only passable 7/4/2008

Food was just OK, the service was insanely bad! I didn't get the correct order for over 90 minutes. I ordered for pickup and was told the order would be ready in 15 minutes. I arrived 20 minutes later and still waited 10 minutes. When I got home, I discvered I had received the wrong entree. I called at 7:49 and was told the oder would go out in 5 minutes. Over 30 minutes later, I finally received my food. I received no apology and no offer to comp any part of my meal. The food here is better tahn most Inida food above 96th St. but not nearly as good as Indian food in Little India or on E. 5th. Pros: Food is passable Cons: Service is abominable more

It really depends on what you get. The naan and entrees are great, but for me a great Indian food meal requires awesome samosas, and the samosas at Indus Valley are kind of a let-down. I wont name names, but another Indian food place in the neighborhood has WAY better samosas... more

Best Indian in the city 8/23/2007

Absolutely INCREDIBLE. Its up on 100 ST, but well worth the commute. My friends and I are ADDICTED. The first time we walked in we were a little intimidated as it has the atmosphere of a fine dining restaurant. But we are always so welled received, even in shorts and tennies! The service is impeccable. Smiles everywhere when you enter, thank you's from everyone when you leave. There is not even a hint of pretensiousness. The servers are ALL so attentive but dont hover around and make you uncomfortable. The prices are a little high, but its only because you are paying for SERIOUS quality. Between the four of us, we've tried almost everything and have never been disappointed. Portions are large. Try the palak paneer, chicken tikka masala, garlic naan, the simosas, the dessert simmered in honey and the one with basmati rice and milk. more

Great food and really nice atmosphere 5/2/2007

Although, like most NY restaurants, the tables are packed a bit tight, the food and service more than make up for it. The hostess and servers are all extremely nice and informative. The menu has all the Indian mainstays, plus some extras not found at typical NY Indian restaurants. The menu is well-written, with full descriptions of each dish. The slightly higher-than-usual price is well justified by the quality of the food, the excellent service, and the romantic atmosphere. Try the malabar fish masala and the onion kulcha. Pros: Excellent food, romantic atmosphere, friendly, professional service Cons: tables are a bit close together more

Best Indian on the UWS 3/26/2007

Definitely one of the best, if not the best Indian on the UWS, and maybe all of NYC. Ambience and service are great too. Try: garlic naan, mulligatawny soup, chicken tikka masala, and pretty much any of the lamb dishes. Pros: great indian food, service, ambience, good quick to-go Cons: nada more

Tasty but a bit pricey. 12/7/2006

Good food and good service. Relaxing ambiance. However, the price is a bit more for Indian food. Nonethelss, worth a taste! Pros: tasty, good service, good ambiance Cons: price more

Neighborhood Indian with five star price tags, small portions and attitude. 12/4/2006

This restaurant in the Columbia university area acts as if it were located on 5th avenue or in the Time-Warner Building. The staff is brusque, surly and impersonal, portions are tiny and prices are excessive. You can do a lot better flavorwise and pricewise around East 6th street or the large number of Indian places on Lexington Avenue in the upper 20s. \r \r The food is good enough but is no excuse for the pretentious service. Pros: Delicate flavors. Cons: Small portions, high prices, surly staff (this is for home delivery via phone). more

Fresh, elegant, and flavorful 9/30/2006

Indus Valley serves up elegantly flavorful Indian dishes. Their attention to detail and freshness is what makes the food at this restaurant enjoyable. This is most apparent in their simpler fares such as samosas, aloo gobhi, and bhendi do piazza. I love their desserts, especially gulab jamun and kheer; they taste home-made and delicate. Don't forget to check out their lunch specials --- They are fabulous! Pros: Flavorful food and desserts; great lunch specials. Oh, they deliver, too! Cons: Can be crowded during dinner time. more

Tasty Indian Food Near Columbia University 4/3/2006

I come from the west coast, where fabulous Indian restaurants are plentiful, but I was sorely disappointed with all the Indian restaurants I tried in NY until I found this one. The food is delicious, and it is a good value by New York standards. It is one of the places I enjoy taking out-of-towners who don't want to spend a fortune. more

User review by tarabrennan 2/9/2006

Indus Valley is definitely the best Indian restaurant on the upper west side. It's slightly more expensive than other Indian restaurants but definitely worth it. The meat is good quality and they know how to cook it, and the sauces are delicious. Fortunately, they also deliver. more

Weird Taste 9/8/2005

The chicken tikka masala that we ordered had the weirdest flavor I've ever tasted - as if ketchup had been added liberally into the sauce...definitely unlike anything I've ever tasted. For the amount of food we got, the price was not that great either. more

One of the best indian restaurants in the city... 7/14/2005

I've been to MANY indian restaurants not only in New York but also in Chicago, SF, and a few European cities. This definitely ranks as one of my favorites. The staff was very attentive and quick. I hope to be a regular. Highly recommend. more

My new favorite Indian place 7/1/2005

I've been to many Indian restaurants in the city and I have to say this one's my new favorite. The servers were friendly and very attentive and the food was fantastic. We had the chicken samosas, the malai kofta, and chicken tikka masala -- I nearly licked my plate, it was so good. Definitely worth checking out. more

Excellent food 5/8/2005

I am not a fan of Indian food, but I loved this place! Great food and good cocktails. I highly recommend. Pros: Food more

Yummy and accommodating 5/1/2004

We just ate here, and had a delicious meal in a very pleasant setting--with our three-year old no less. the kitchen was incredibly responsive to her request for no spices (and my husband's request for Matter Paneer, even though it is not a menu item), and the food still managed to arrive relatively quickly. You must try the mango lassi: it is sprinkled with ground cardoman and is absolutely delicious! Pros: Accommodating, Pleasant wait staff, Varied menu Cons: , no separate section, for vegetarian items more
