Best

These guys always give me great sushi, and great service, thanks!

Overall, not bad, but not good. After being ""sold"" on the Toro special, it became clear that it was probably more special a few days ago. The Tuna was low quality and the insid...

does NOT deserve to be #1 5/13/2007

I don't understand why people like this place. The fish tastes like chlorine and is nowhere near as fresh as it could be. The prices are mostly comparable to other sushi places, but the quality is really substandard. We've tried a lot of sushi places and had some really terrible sushi - this isn't the worst of the worst, but it's getting there. more

Good sushi and good value 2/22/2007

This place has some of the best sushi in town. Many people will define good sushi as ""large portions,"" and that is plain silly. Good sushi is the right size, right cut, and right preparation. Size doesn't matter (well, nobody wants sliver sized slices). They have a good selection of creative rolls, and even have some cool Korean stuff like Korean Chirashi. The wait staff is nice (and cute!). The chefs are also very cool: if you want to chat they are open ears. But if you want to eat in peace, they will leave you be. The chef will always greet you and then say goodbye with a friendly ""see you tomorrow!"" Prices are very affordable. The setting is very casual. \r \r Be sure to ask for green tea if that is what you want, because they will bring you Korean corn tea if you aren't specific (though corn tea is good too)! Pros: Sushi, Staff Cons: Parking on busy nights more

Best sushi in town, most friendly sushi chefs 2/13/2007

Great sushi and always fresh fish. The chefs are always very friendly and be sure to ask how everything is. Service can be slow at times but is improving. Sit at the sushi bar for the best service. Pros: great sushi, friendly chefs Cons: service can be slow more

good food, poor service and use cash to avoid charging mistakes! 2/5/2007

A friend and I visited this restaurant after searching CitySearch for a new sushi place. Overall we loved the food, were disappointed with the service, and frustrated with our overdraft fees! Read on?\r We visited on a Friday night and were greeted friendly and seated promptly. We ordered and were served quickly. We noticed that we were missing one of our sushi rolls and where unable to find our waitress to tell her this. She later came to check on us, and we let her know about the missing roll and asked her for another item. She repeated this back to us, and so we thought she understood. She shortly returned with just our second order, not the missing roll from our first order. We were annoyed and she was busy, so we didn?t complain. We were given our check later, and saw that the missing roll was on it, so we had to bring it up again. They apologized and, we asked them to split our check between our two cards.\r A week or so later, I was informed by my bank that I had overdrawn my account. I was disappointed to see that I had been double charged by ?I Love Sushi? and therefore, had overdrawn the account. I was informed that I needed to confront the restaurant. I stopped by and let them know the situation and talked with the manager/owner over the phone. I asked him to call my bank and deal with them to rectify the situation. He did this, but also I received 4 phone calls from the restaurant asking me for my friend?s information because they had charged me twice instead of splitting the check onto two cards. They did pay my overdraft fees, but refused to refund my double charged amount until they got payment from my friend. I didn?t feel it was appropriate for them to ask me for her information, nor for me to give it and so chose to deal with my friend on my own. \r It seemed that they could have eaten their costs at that point, rather than upsetting their customers any further because of there idiotic mistakes. I was very annoyed and disappointed.\r Pros: food Cons: service more

I LIKE Sushi 11/3/2006

This little place is tucked away, but worth turning into for fresh sushi. When compared to the few pieces of sushi that you can pick up at the markets in the deli area for $5.95, on average, it's worth the few dollars more for the larger portions that you'll get here. The non-sushi items are good too, and Korean-style ribs are delicious as is the Fire Cracker Salad (although priced a little spendy at $9.95). Please try the tofu beef appetizer. It's really delicious. And there are a few full-course menu items that you can get as an appetizer. You won't have to spend the money on a full meal, but you can sample the dish this way. I've been twice, and the first time service was great. The second go round the hostess plunked down our menus on the table without making eye contact or saying anything. Thought this was pretty tacky. Perhaps it was because I had asked not to be seated near the door (with a cold, cold night I didn't want the draft), and if there are tables available elsewhere, I'd prefer to eat my meal in a calmer locale (without the back and forth traffic of folks entering/exiting the restaurant.) This, however, is personal preference but I wondered if that prompted the menu toss down?? Anyway, it's a good place overall. Good value for the price. Pros: Good eats overall. Cons: Wait staff could be friendlier more

Great sushi! Don't go near closing.... 9/1/2006

This is a really great sushi joint for the most part. 4/5 times that I have been there everything was absolutely PERFECT. I recently went in to write a review for my new website critiqueing oregon cuisine and everything was spectacular except for one downfall - The rice on my rainbow roll had some kind of stange sauce on it that made a few of the left peices mushy. I think this is because we came in late. (Kind of considered rude in most traditional sushi joints) and they had to get rid of the last of the rice without making a bunch more just to finish one roll. While I understand this, they did lose a few points. All the rest of what we had was AMAZING. The gyoza was very tasty, fresh ingredients, and HOT off the grill. The 'hitchhiker' roll which is Salmon on top of a california roll with cream cheese in the middle, blew me away. The right side of the rainbow roll was exquisit as usual, but that used rice on the left bugged me! I suggest going earlier in the night for the freshest ingredients. Anyways, try it out! I highly recommend it and as everyone else has said the service is spectacular. more

Like walking into a Japanese alley 5/25/2006

I love Sushi! And it's all because of this little hole in the wall cafe! When you walk in the sushi chefs all greet you like you are a long lost friend, the seating is fast, the service is great and most important...... the food is fantastic! (The sake wasn't bad either!) We tried a bit of everything. Everything was very fresh and tasty, the octopus was not tip top but everyhting else was great. My husband is a commerical fisherman and we are such fish snobs and believe me the fish was very excellent. The fish pond inside was really sweet too. enjoy! Pros: Great service, Fresh sushi, nice setting Cons: looks tacky outside more

People who dont think I love is the best in Portland dont know anything about sushi. they have the most creative and unusual maki. Freshest fish I have found in the area. Service is amazing. Sit at the bar and hang out with the nicest sushi chefs in town. more

Great For Takeout 5/2/2006

We got a large takeout order from I Love Sushi, and not only was everything fresh and delicious, but the order was correct...that hardly ever happens! Can't recommend actually eating in the restaurant since we didn't, but it looked like it was an average sushi spot (i.e., the atmosphere isn't what's attractive about the place, the food is). Pros: Fresh, Good Service Cons: Parking more

I Love I Love Sushi 4/3/2006

The restaurant is owned and managed by two brothers who know every aspect of the restaurant business and truly love what they do which is serve superior Japanese and Korean food. They learn what you like instantly and remember you the second time you come in for another delicious meal. They have the freshest fish, imagination and best of all...your meal becomes a royal banquet. I've eaten here over twenty times. I plan to eat here another hundred times! The entire crew are so nice you don't want to leave the fantasy world of dining pleasure they create when you walk in the door at I Love Sushi. Go there as fast as you can... keep 'em in business. Lovable, talented knowledgeable restauranteurs like this don't just happen by themselves... You need to go there. Your entire being will walk away completely satisfied. Pros: Superior Sushi, Superior Service, Superior People more

I don't get it 2/4/2006

I tried this place 2 times thinking the first was just an off day but I was wrong. I eat sushi 2-4 times a month and this is probably the worst tasting sushi I've had. I wish it were better because its the closest to my house. They are however very nice as far as service. Pros: Service, Close to home Cons: BAD SUSHI more

Great sushi! Yum! 8/26/2005

The sushi is very good. My husband had the combination platter that had sashimi, california rolls, nigiri, chicken catsu and soup/salad. I had the maki tempura roll and it was all delicious. My 2 year old had the blukhogi of the kids dinner menu and it was big enough to feed an adult. The Sushi chefs are very friendly and happy and made you feel comfortable. The place is very unpretentious and focus on sushi/food instead of getting drunk and partying. The prices are oh-so reasonable and we were very happy with our meals. more

Great Owners 1/3/2005

The sushi is fantastic and the service is excellent. This a great local sushi bar where they definitely appreciate your repeat business and treat everyone very well. I recommend it to all my friends. more

Never what we expected 3/9/2004

We've never understood why this place was so popular and rated so highly. Granted, we've only been there twice, but both times we were there, the food was tolerable at best, and the service TERRIBLE. It's expensive for what you get, and just not worth our time. You'd be much better off travelling north up to Star Sushi. Cons: , service, food more

D lish 2/23/2004

I Love Sushi is fabulous! I tried Sushi for the 1st time a couple of years ago here at I love Sushi, now I'm hooked. My all time favorite has to be Koji's on Macadam! I love sushi is my second fave!!! John & Joe are terrific along with the rest of their staff! more

Pretty darn good 6/20/2003

While everyone raves about Saburos, here's a place with good sushi, reasonable prices, and most importantly, no waiting for a table. The portions might not be reminiscent of a whole fish on a piece of rice, but freshness and taste certainly rivals the competitors. Restaurant Murata is tops for Sushi. more

Beware The ""Specials"" 5/10/2003

Overall, not bad, but not good. After being ""sold"" on the Toro special, it became clear that it was probably more special a few days ago. The Tuna was low quality and the inside out rolls were made poorly. The salad came with a creamy thousand-island type dressing, nothing like the traditional ginger dressing. The miso was sub-par. Pros: Cheaper Cons: Low quality fish, Poor rolls more

OverRated! 1/22/2003

Being lovers of sushi, my husband and I were ecsatic about trying this supposedly ""one of the best"" sushi places in town. We were immediately disappointed by the slow service (it took 20 extra min. for my husband's meal to come out after mine) and small expensive portions. I ordered the special variety sashimi platter, costing $16, and there was nothing special about it. My husband ordered the korean bulgogi meat dish, which was bland and not korean-tasting, AND most of his dish was salad. We were both still so hungry after our dinner that we went to Owajimaya, bought fresh sashimi, and had a second dinner at home. We decided never to go back to this place again! We prefer Mio Sushi or Sinju (or even Taco Bell) over I Love Sushi any day!! Pros: close to home Cons: small portions, expensive, slow service more

Best california rolls EVER 11/9/2002

The key here is TIMING, as the restaurant has numerous nooks for romantic couples. This is great at night but at certain times it is too crowded, and the ambience is lost. The staff is very friendly, I was greeted by the face of a smiling chef over the counter the minute i walked in the door. Food is delicious but a bit expensive. The best deal is the $15 sushi plate which includes lots of different kinds. Miso soup is good as well, only $1 a bowl! I recommend this place to anyone looking to try sushi for the first time, or couples or small groups of friends who already love it and need a new place to go to have some. Pros: Cozy & comfortable, Relaxed atmosphere Cons: Limited parking, Easily crowded more

Fun For Everyone! 10/11/2002

This is a small cozy and fun place to go! The prices are average, but the Hospitality is Wonderful! John and Joe the main Sushi Chefs are very pleasant and whip-up some great eats! I have become a weekly regular and love it! more
