Best

My husband and I went to Gustav's last week. I had gone to one in Tampa, Florida, off of Dale Mabry Highway, and it was wonderful, so I was hopeful that I'd have the same type of...

Worst

awful ....... expensive and watery fondue, slow service. Waiter didn't give me my choice of salad, I got the salad he wanted me to have, and he never asked if I wanted a refill ...

Had a nice early dinner with the family 2/21/2012

Had a nice early dinner with the family on Sunday. We are usually skeptical about trying new places, but heard good things. The food was very delicious and the service was great. I highly recommend the Mad Bavarian Burger....as well as the sampler appetizer. Looking forward to our next visit! more

Happy Hour at Gustavs 10/22/2011

It was mom's night out at Gustav's Happy Hour and we had a blast. It's not always about the food, it""s also about the friends you are with. We were having so much fun in the barI didn't notice anything wrong with the food. I know my wine tasted great and we all enjoyed the fondue, the pretzels, salad. We ate light so I don't know about the other menu items, but from my past experience I never had a complaint. If you aren't a food critic, the atmosphere in the bar is a fun place to hang out and have a good time! The fondue is amazing! Don't let the other reviews scare you away. If you have never been, go check it out for yourself. Try the happy four first so you're not spending as much! more

Maybe think of somewhere else to go 4/18/2011

On a sunny (amazing) Sunday drive back from Newberg wine country we stopped in to check out happy hour. \r Our service was excellent yet I found the rest to be downhill from there. We eat out quite a bit and this was by far the poorest food experience I've had. As I signed the bill I thought what a waste of money it all was. \r If you are salt sensitive (I am not. BUT IF YOU ARE) this is not your place. From the fondue to the chicken skewers to the potato pancakes- their chef knows only salt for his seasoning. \r Chicken skewers- rubbery and salty, side of rice was very good\r Fondue- good but all of our ankles will double in size by morning\r Potato pancakes- oily, flat flavoring aside from SALT\r Burger- good but nothing to go back for.\r \r Customer level seemed nothing out of the ordinary and staff appeared to be everywhere but we heard customers asking for service multiple times. Unknown what the issue was regarding that. \r \r I will just never go back. Portland has too many good resturants to experience. As we know, this is clearly a themed resturant that meets the mark on a subpar level. \r \r my rating of 'eh' is saying too much more

Terrible food, mediocre highschool service. 4/4/2011

Unfortunately this once well revered restaurant is now horrible. We were seated promptly, and our drinks and appetizers were ordered. Our appetizer platter arrived shortly after the drinks. Bad is an understatement. The crab/shrimp cakes were flavorless and mushy. The potato pancakes were more minced bland onion then potato, and the fondue for the bread tastes like spreadable cheese from a jar. The chicken schnitzel strips were soaked in oil. The sausage wasn't bad, but also was not what we were looking forward to in the appetizer. Not to mention, the appetizer platter was $13! For Dinner we both ordered the Jägerschnitzel, my wife, the chicken($13.25), myself the veal ($15.50) . I also ordered a Reuben sandwich to be made before we left as a to go order. The waitress said she had a bad memory, and to remind her later before she brought the check. After she left, we realized we were never asked, or got the opportunity to make a choice of our side dish between the mashed potatoes, or spätzle noodles (we wanted the potatoes). The waitress arrived back within less then 5 minutes with our dinner. This made us SUPER nervous, because it was a little too quick to fire that amount of food. The dinner was horrible. The veal cutlet was not a cutlet, but a smashed paillard or escalopes, and had been drowned in oil, kind of sauteed, and not really fried. They tasted of nothing but the oil. My wife's chicken was exactly the same, in fact the taste was indecipherable between the veal or chicken. They arrived with the spätzle noodles, so we said, ""hey, we are good sports, and we are still having a good time, lets eat the noodles."" The noodles were 1.) cold, 2.) just as oily, if not more so then the cutlet/paillards, and 3.) tasted very starchy, and almost mushy. we each ate about 1/3 of our plates before the grease coated our mouths. All through the dinner course, our waitress and front of the house guy (Host I assume) were gossiping (loud enough for the customers to hear) about other co-workers and their incompetence. I was about to tell my wife that I was going to pass on the ""To Go"" Reuben, because if it was even remotely as bad as dinner that I didn't want it. Just then the waitress slammed a Reuben sandwich covered in fries in a clear plastic container with our check. We paid, and left before the waitress returned to pick up the check. The Reuben was ($10.99) Total bill was almost $58.00, not counting tip $6.00 I left for the tip (I am a Great tipper when I have amazing service 30%+) This tip was for medium/poor service. Not horrible or rude, but just ehh. We arrived home, and later on I said, okay I am still hungry, I am going try the Reuben. DO THEY DUNK EVERYTHING IN OIL AT THIS PLACE? I'm not kidding, you could wring the bread out like a sponge and tablespoon upon tablespoon of oil would come out. The corned beef was ehh. The cheese was good, but the sauerkraut was bland and grey. I literally pulled my Steinfeld's sauerkraut out of the fridge to place on top of the corned beef. It didn't help much. Overall it is truly saddening to see a local establishment with an excellent reputation for service and wonderful food go the downhill route it has over the past year or so. I'm not sure if there is new management, if they were bought out, if they are using cheaper products, if they are paying less, and getting less from employees, or what is truly the case, but the food was truly disappointing and literally left a bad taste (and Grease) in our mouths, and the service left a lot to be desired. Our waitress was nice, but absent mindedness and gossip about other employees made your $15 tip into $6, and I don't pay less then 10% unless we are cussed at. The restaurant still has potential, but it definitely needs a comprehensive retooling. We will not be returning. General Manager Geoff Marlatt, are you reading this? more

Dissapointing After Previous Good Experiences 12/23/2010

I have gone periodically to Gustav's since it opened around 2002- at least twice a year. Last night I went with my wife and inlaws. We were all dissappointed.\r \r The waiter was inattentive and much more interested in serving drinks to the young ladies at the next table. He was so busy chatting with the ladies, the food was cold by the time it was delivered (by someone else) to the table. Also the quality of food (specifically Waldorf Salad and Salmon) were a large step down from previous visits.\r \r The Waldorf Salad boasts bleu cheese in the description, but if there was any, it must have been only a couple of atoms worth. One of my inlaws mentioned that she had the same issue with her Waldorf Salad the last tme she was there.\r \r We were all so dissapointed that we have decided to not return. It is sad when a good restaurant goes downhill, and in our collective estimation, it definitely has.\r more

Yummy...and buggy 4/16/2010

I love the food and truly enjoy the wait staff... just the little sugar bugs in the bar area are yucky. The manager did come out and say they've had exterminators working on it. It must just be the alcohol, but it doesn't seem like other restaurants deal with it as much :( Pros: DELICIOUS food, great wait staff Cons: little sugar bugs in bar area more

Love these guys 4/16/2009

I only really come here for happy hour, but it's always been great. The bartenders are super friendly, making sitting at the bar enjoyable. This one server in particular (who's name I can't recall) is really awesome and even remembered me and my friends and what we ordered (probably because we order the same thing every time, cheese fondue and one of the german hefeweizens). Most of the regular menu food is a bit overpriced, although I do like the turkey sandwich. But the happy hour can't go wrong. We will be back! A lot! Pros: Happy hour, cool servers Cons: Regular menu a little pricey more

Excellent ambiance. Serves large crowds. Authentic culture. 10/21/2008

I've been here many times. My only down side is that the fondue should be served over a small flame (liability issue, probably). The food is always hot, quick, and excellent. more

Wonderful German Food; Very Appealing Interior Decor; Friendly Staff 7/1/2008

My husband and I went to Gustav's last week. I had gone to one in Tampa, Florida, off of Dale Mabry Highway, and it was wonderful, so I was hopeful that I'd have the same type of experience here. I was not disappointed. The food was great. My husband loved his halibut fish with rice and asparagus. I tried it, and I told him that the rice was really flavorful, and better than any ""bedding"" of rice I'd ever had before. The manager came by and my husband told him that it was the best dinner that he's eaten recently. We ordered the sampler plate, and the chicken schnitzel was wonderful! It was thin cut and had a crispy covering. I really liked the flavor of it. The cheese fondue dip was good, too. They had a wide variety of German food to choose from, and I wish I could have tried it all. I will just have to go back again soon! Pros: Great German Food. Cons: Annoying middle post at table. more

worst Gustav's of the three 5/28/2008

awful ....... expensive and watery fondue, slow service. Waiter didn't give me my choice of salad, I got the salad he wanted me to have, and he never asked if I wanted a refill on the soup, which was part of the menu item I orded. The pork schnitzel was barely warm, and it was greasy. Only positive, the Optimator was cold.\r I won't be returning . more

I <3 Gustav's. 4/27/2008

I always have a good experience at the Gustav's in Tigard.\r \r I love, love, love their fondue.\r \r I'm a huge fan & dine there regularly. \r \r I highly recommend it & anything on the menu. Pros: Romantic, Nice Atmosphere, Close to shopping Cons: Wait, Parking Shortage more

Decent food, drama waitstaff 6/30/2007

Went to Gustav's 6-28-07 with husband. Have been many times, the food is usually good. Our waiter was nice enough, I believe he is Jamaican. As we were enjoying our meal, one of the waitstaff started gossiping with our waiter. Managers please tell your staff to take it into the breakroom, we don't want to hear it. Nothing worse than trying to relax after work, than having to hear from some gossiping waitstaff. Pros: decent german food Cons: catty waitstaff more

Great Mulligatawny 3/9/2007

Thursdays are mulligatawny days. Nice little touches like free hot cider in the lobby. Icy cold restrooms and no hot water. Food and service mostly good, but occassionally, neither one are good. I eat there almost every week. For the most part, it's consistent and the food is homestyle and surprisingly flavorful. Pros: Fondue is Fun! Cons: Lobby gets full-nowhere to sit more

Beware the Prime Rib 3/5/2007

I blame myself, ordering prime rib at a German restaurant. But Gustav's prime rib should come with a warning label - not succulent and tough as boot leather.\r \r In general, we've found the Hollywood Gustav's head and shoulders above Washington Square. Pros: Parking, wait Cons: Prime Rib more

Busy on weekends but always the best experience! 2/19/2007

We moved to the Portland area about 6 months ago and we have gone to Gustav's several times since we have lived here. We've never had a bad experience! They tend to be really busy thursday-sunday but that should be expected at any restaurant in the area. The longest we've waited for a table was 65 min but we are always greeted by prompt, curteous service. On the busy nights, food tends to take about 30 minutes so we always plan ahead and order dinner salads or have their yummy fondue! I think it's key to always remember that if you have to wait at the door for a table--then you're going to have to wait awhile for your food at any restaurant. If the lobby's busy..imagine what the kitchen looks like! We love coming here during the week for happy hour or big birthday get togethers. My favorite's: Love for Sale (alcholic bev.), fondue (app), Flank steak (entree), and chocolate mousse (dessert)! Granted the portions are large so I never am able to eat everything in one sitting but most of the leftovers are just as good as in the restaurant! Pros: Great service and food Cons: Long waits on weekends more

ICH LIEBE DIE WURST 8/11/2006

ALWAYS HAVE A GREAT EXPERIENCE WEATHER I DINE IN OR ORDER TO GO THE SAUSAGE PLATE AND TRIO ARE EXCELLENT AND MY FAVORITE IS THE BAVARIAN FARMERS SCHNITZEL Pros: GREAT FOOD Cons: A LITTLE PRICEY more

Horrible Service 6/1/2006

Gustav's has good soups and sandwiches. But today we had the worse service I've experienced in a long time. The waiter took over 10 minutes to even take our drink order - it then took him another 15 minutes to bring us our drinks and take our food order. After waiting over an hour, we requested that our food be takeout and he didn't even apologize for the long wait. We were having lunch after the big rush as well - so he wasn't slammed in terms of tables. He never checked in with us to let us know why it was taking so long, didn't bring us the customary bread rolls or even pretend to be anything but throughly inconvenienced by our presence saying ""no problem"" at least 10 times. The food is decent, it is overpriced and after continually getting bad service, I will never eat here again. Pros: Decent Food Cons: Horrible Service more
