Sorry service. My daughter wanted a root beer float. The waiter and manager said they did not serve it. I asked for a scoop of ice cream and some root beer, and was even refused that. Needless to say, we have not been back even though we are locals. These guys need some lessons in customer satisfaction. more

Good food, but can be unpredictable. 8/10/2008

We have been to the G more times than I can count. Food is good, more like comfort food. However, it is inconsistent. My husband often orders the fish and chips, he loves theirs, but too often he gets a tiny piece of fish and leaves hungry. A few times he had more fish on his place than he could eat, perhaps they gave him a double order. I like their dishes, but they don't wow me. This place is always busy, drinks are great, esp the margaritas and it's clean. The food is better than traditional pub fare, BUT you pay dearly for it. For their 5 oz fish & chips it's about $17, hendering on very over priced. I order something different each time I am there, (average $15) chicken dumplings, pasta, roast pork, specials, always pretty good, but nothing that I couldn't cook at home. Service, depending upon who you get can be terrible, clueless to very good. They don't advertise, don't need to and I suppose the affluent hood keeps them in business after all these years. I, for one, would love to see more healthy, ""today"" lighter dishes on the menu. And parking can be a challenge. Anyway, they are good, but I wouldn't go out of my way to find the place if I didn't live 1 mile away. more

Outstanding place in the 'burbs to EAT! 9/20/2007

We've been eating here since 1988! They're open for lunch & Dinner, FRI-SAT. The staff is very friendly.... it is a ""Cheers"" type of place - they really DO know your name if you've been there more than twice. Pros: Weekly specials! Daily Soups! 2-5 year olds should stay home Cons: 2-5 year olds should stay home more

Outstanding for Food, Service and Atmosphere 6/24/2007

My wife and I travel for work and we both look forward to having dinner at Gubanc's on our return. We have patronized Gubancs' for more than 15 years, and have never found the food, service or atmosphere anything but superb, we especially like the varied soup menu and their daily specials are always fantastic. Our four kids have been raised eating at Gubancs and now go there as adults with their friends. Pros: Outstanding Wait Staff, Bartenders and Management Cons: Sometimes a bit of a wait for a table, but always worth the wait more

Best Cordon Blue Anywhere 6/12/2007

We went back after getting back in school mode.We were pleased with the new menu and The incredible new specials. Our server stated there was a new chef and to try the specials.Four dinners later we are again back on the PUB wagon. Service was great for a busy night.Be prepared for a wait.(Its worth it) Pros: Food, cocktails Cons: Parking, wait lines more

Best place in LO! 5/1/2007

I went to Gubanc's the other night and had the best pot-roast, and another member of my party had the chicken and dumplings which were also absolutely fantastic! Where can you even find great food like that anymore?? Thanks, Gubanc's, for the consistently great food and service. There wouldn't be anywhere decent to eat if you weren't in town!! Pros: Great food! Friendly people! Cons: There's only one and it's busy more

Don't bring your kids! 4/18/2007

Sad experience! Have been going to Gubancs for almost 20 years. Recently bringing my son, husband and friends. The Manager, Steve has completely ruined this destination for us. There might as well be a sign on the door that says ""leave your child outside"". The Mgr hovered over us without talking to us, watching every move our child made, and actually asked his wait staff to ""remove the little vase of carnations from our table so the next guest could enjoy"", my son was thriled to smell and pull in and out of the vase, normal 2 year old behavior. The vase and flowers were in perfect condition when we left. We had a confrontation with the poor waiter (who was kind and embarresessed), and when my husband spoke with the Mgr upon leaving. We dine out regularily with our child, and he's pretty great in restaraunts. In todays world, it's really dissapointing to see a family, neighborhood restaraunt have a Mrg with such backwards attitudes on how to treat guests with kids. Food is great! Atmosphere hasn't changed since the 70's. Just not a place to bring children. more

Take a step back into the Seventies... 12/2/2006

... because this place hasn't changed since 1979. In fact, botanists visit this place regularly to see what the state of ferns was ""back in the day."" Pros: Stayin' alive, stayin' alive! Cons: Mulligatawny soup wasn't available for us more

THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN THE GUBANC'S!!!! 10/11/2006

Even though Gubanc's is located in LO, I do not mind driving from Portland for the quaint atmosphere, consistently outstanding food, and the affable and efficient staff! I frequented Gubanc's with my parents growing up and now try to eat there at least once a week with friends, family or whomever. The place really is great for anything ranging from a casual lunch or an after-work drink to a relaxing dinner. The kitchen obviously places great pride in its food, and the staff is so friendly that anyone can feel comfortable! I have enjoyed trying many many restaurants all over town but Gubanc's is unequivocally my favorite place to eat in Portland! Pros: Modest yet complete and well-priced wine selection, GREAT FOOD/DRINKS, friendly Cons: don't bring your crying kids (well-behaved ONLY) more

Great neighborhood hangout.. 10/5/2006

I Love Gubancs! I've been going there every Friday night for the past three years, and it's definitely the best place in town. The food is consistently great, with spectacular specials. I like the comfortable atmosphere, and all the different personalities of the staff. Steve and Jason are great, along with Sheri, Alice and the staff. I would recommend it to anyone!! It's very fast paced, so don't hesitate to introduce yourself, and you will never be forgotten. Pros: service, great food Cons: may have to wait, due to the size of restaurant more

Horrible and Rude Treatment 10/1/2006

We ordered three meals. Two of the meals of the meals we ordered were not as described on the menu. We told the waitress right away and she took the meals away. The waitress and the owner were both very rude to us. They made us pay for the one of the two meals we did not want to eat. The waitress grabbed my credit card and put the charges on it while I was still arguing with the owner over having to pay for one of the two meals we could not eat. I gladly paid for the one meal that was acceptable. Cons: Items not as described on menu, poor treatment by staff and owner more

Good food, not family friendly 3/27/2006

Great food, but not family friendly. Only 1 high chair and no changing station. We were excited for a night out at one of our past favorite places, but had to leave the restaurant after being seated because the only high chair was in use. We asked management, and they didn't seem to care. more

User review by shep1 1/20/2006

The food here was excellent....once we were seated. Beware of the VERY small 'bar' area, and the fact that the 4 - 6 tiny tables there are considered dining room seating...what you've waited 45 minutes for. Also, don't go hoping to mingle with a 30 or even 40-something crowd. We went on a Friday evening and it felt like we were at a grandparents mixer. Maybe try lunchtime instead. Again, the food was EXCELLENT. I tried one of the chef's weekly specials, and you couldn't get a more creative, quality meal at any area restaurant. Pros: food, service, value Cons: bar area, parking more

Tired of the chain resturant's? 12/24/2005

Good home style food, great drinks and fantastic service; what more could you ask for? Combine this with Lake Oswego's eclectic clientle and it has the makings of a super evening. Pros: Varied Menu, Soup Board, Pot Roast Cons: weekend seating more

Wonderful! 8/26/2004

We frequent many restaurants, but Gubanc's is one of our favorites. The selections are wonderful..you must try their summer salads with the fresh fruits...incredibly good. The water glasses are never empty, there is never a need that we have to ask for, service is impecable. Kodos to all of you!!! Pros: Incredible Food, Great Service, Ample Parking more

Exceptional Food 8/21/2003

My cousins and I had dinner at Gubanc's a year ago, and I haven't had as good a meal since. I can still remember the sweetness of the black berries in the salad. Absolutely exceptional food, with an ambience and atmosphere that is very relaxing. It is a great restaurant, even though my last name is also Gubanc. Pros: Excellent Food, Friendly Help, Relaxed Atmosphere more

Just a great little place 8/5/2002

This is the perfect neighborhood diner. Everybody else knows it, too, so go AS SOON as they open (11 AM), in mid-afternoon, or later in the evening. Juicy burgers, fresh salads, and a nice wine list. Check out the clam chowder (third Tuesday of the month) and the halibut fish and chip special on Fridays. Pros: homemade soups, perfect burgers, nice atmosphere Cons: too busy! more
