a wonderful saturday lunch!! 4/15/2010

me and my boyfriend had a wonderful time at gristmill on a saturday afternoon. the food was delicious! you gotta try the appetizer with the red jalapenos stuffed with cheese...everything we ordered (i had the baby back ribs special and my bf had the grilled chicken Caesar salad) was on point! if the weather is nice, you have to sit outside and enjoy the view of the river and the beautiful trees surrounding you. service was nice and i had a great experience. i would definitely come back! gruene is such a nice small town. make sure you stop by gruene hall, which is next door and check out some of the small businesses in the area. Pros: scenery/view, food, service Cons: parking more

No Baked Potatos here.......... 11/27/2009

You cannot get a baked potato with a steak here. All of the food is good that i have had here. from hamburgers to steak..i have never had a bad meal here. Upbeat waitstaff of college students most of the time. really nice in the winter when it is not as busy with tourists. Pros: Great atmosphere, great service Cons: They dont have baked potatoes on the menu more

Okay food, nice ambience (we liked Gruene River Grill better) 11/16/2008

The view is the real draw to this place. The outdoor patios on the river are great. Our service was also good, but the food was less than stellar. The queso dip tasted like it was just one of those pre-made Velveeta dip blocks melted down. I had fried catfish and fries, and the catfish was over-fried (almost couldn't taste the meat of the fish inside). The fries are round-cut, which is interesting, but they weren't very well seasoned. My husband's catfish was the same as mine, although his onion rings were quite tasty. Overall, the food was just okay. Maybe would be better for lunch with just a sandwich? Again, the river view is great, but that's the high point. Pros: Ambience -- river view is great! Cons: Food is just okay. more

Good steaks and that's about it. 9/21/2008

After hearing about the Gristmill from my co-worker, after we moved to San Marcos, we ate at the Gristmill on our first weekend. Service was very good - but they were very crowded and hard to hear one another talk at the table. The food - not a huge selection, but they did have a mainly large beef menu. The meat was good - but IMHO not as great as some other people have stated. Maybe I was expecting a WOW type factor, but no, just a very good meal. Was it worth it...maybe...but I found something better and it is only a few hundred yards up the street...Gruene River Grill...more selection of food and I felt it had better tasting food. But don't take my word for it...go do both restaurants and you decide. Pros: View of the river and the steaks are just okay for me. Cons: Not a large selection of food and the taste was average. more

RIBS!!!! 6/22/2007

If you like your ribs falling off the bone, and dripping in bbq sauce, this is the place for you. Hands down best ribs in SA area. The round cut fries and club sandwich we ordered were also delicious. Oh and we had the poblano chicken quesadillas to start, they were right no the money, our 1 yr old son wolfed them down too! Pros: Food-esp ribs, outdoor ambiance Cons: i didnt have room for dessert, and our server was kindof strange-but nice more

all about the atmosphere 3/26/2007

We had heard about this restaurant from friends and family who were passing through to San Antonio. We were also told to insist upon riverside seating. We did, and we were not sorry! It was noon and the sun was beating down on us, but with the big umbrella over us and the cool breeze carrying over from the river, we were relieved. We loved watching people float down the river in their inner tubes while we enjoyed a casual meal. I ordered the fresh trout ($11) while my wife ordered the beef tenderloin salad($9). The fish was a bit lean but pretty well seasoned. Her salad was huge! It was basically an 8oz. tenderloin filet cut into many pieces and tossed with salad greens and avocado. She loved it. I would've rather just had the filet on it's own =) Sadly, the dish that we remember the most wasn't our main dishes.. it was their unique "round-cut french fries"! Thin slices of potatoes - deep fried and lightly salted make perfect compliments for the food. The service was excellent and prompt. Reasonable prices, friendly service, and an outstanding view make this restaurant a "must-visit" for anyone in the New Braunfels area. Pros: the atmospere is great. Round cut french fries! Cons: avoid mid summer - it's super hot and humid and the river attracts tons of mosquitos more

Best Atmosphere, great margaritas 1/2/2007

I love the atmospher of this place; It's semi-outdoor eating areas are casual, but the decor and food are aslo perferct for date night. I live in and grew up in Texas, and have tried more BBQ ribs than I can recall...Gristmill's are the best. I can't even think of a second place contender. The menu is varied giving you many options; no matter what you're in the mood for, the Gristmill has it. Another of my favorites (just next door to the Gristmill) is the Gruene River Grill. It's a bit nicer and the food quality (ribs aside) is far better than the Gristmill. The service at Gruene River Grill is FAR better than Gristmill. Consider both when in New Braunfels/Gruene. Pros: Atmosphere, menu variety, margaritas Cons: Can be hot in the summer, long wait more

The Best Sausage and Ribs 10/21/2006

This restaurant has the best sausage in the world. I have never had anything like it. its soooo awesome. The ribs are to die for. There BBQ sauce is great. My husband gets the chicken fried steak and he loves it. They are so consistent. We used to go there every week but now live too far. (in Dallas) We really miss the place. It was priced just right. If you go I recommend the baked potato salad as a side. There is nothing like it anywhere. The atmosphere and food is top notch and the wait staff are very hard workers, you will never have an empty glass. Pros: Great for the whole family or as a nice date spot. You even get to see wildlife sometimes. Cons: There is nothing bad to say about this restaurant. more

The Best Ribs in 30 miles! 8/10/2006

I drive all the time from San Antonio, To New Braunfels, just for their RIBS!!! OH MY GOD! They're just the best! When you arrive they greet you like family, and the staff are the best in the business. Now, even over the river just adds. I love this place, and I know you will too! Pros: EVERTYTHING! Cons: Summers at hot to eat out side more
