All my needs were met 8/1/2011

Throughout my stay I had the pleasure of speaking to Ms. Salgado on several occasions. Each time that I spoke with her, Ms Salgado was courteous, friendly, and efficient. She went to great lengths to ensure that all of my needs were met. The same was true of Gema in reservations. The Gran Melia is certainly lucky to have two fine employees like Maria and Gema. more

My wife and I had a wonderful stay 7/28/2011

My wife and I had a wonderful stay at your resort for our honeymoon. All of the staff was very attentive to our needs and comfort. The four young men specifically assigned to serve us during our stay - Joshua, Angel, Eddie, and Angel - were simply phenomenal. They were personable, friendly, had a wonderful sense of humor, and again, attentive to our every need (desire, want, etc.). In addition, Jose', who served us in the Cafe every morning, and Anna, the Cafe manager who greeted us as we arrived for breakfast each day, were a pure joy and delight. We looked forward to greeting Jose and Anna each morning and starting our day with Jose. Our laughs and conversations with him about Puerto Rico and life in general have left wonderful memories we will always treasure. Everyone at Gran Melia had a genuine heart to serve, and if they didn't, they faked it well! The food was delicious, although we only ate at the Cafe for breakfast, and at the Italian and Puerto Rican restaurants for dinner - all located in the resort. There was a popular Asian cuisine restaurant, but we did not visit it . The grounds were beautiful and very well-kept. The ocean/beach is not one you can swim in, per se, but it provides a lovely backdrop that adds to the overall ambiance of the resort. Public beaches in neighboring cities are designed for what you would envision as true "beach outings". The island of Puerto Rico seemed easy to maneuver around, and you will need a rental car at this resort, as it is not within walking distance to anything of necessity or local sightseeing. We actually enjoyed driving around and highly recommend it. Overall, it was an absolutely wonderful stay, and we're already planning our return visit to Puerto Rico and the Gran Melia for our one year wedding anniversary on 12.31.11! We're calling it our second honeymoon :-) We only hope that our "family" will still be there to welcome us upon our return. more

I would go back 7/25/2011

My wife and I were at the Gran Melia during this past week and we had a great experience. The resort was beautiful and my wife was very impressed with the decor. We tried all the restaurants in the resort and were very impressed by the local cusine one, Passion. The Italian one, Tempo, was the most disappointing one (maybe the reason is that since I am Italian I expect much more). We also went to one restaurant out of the resort that was suggested by the concierge, Ritchie Cafe and the experience was average. All the restaurants were expensive and the service in most cases was locking. Great martini bar. The Hotel staff was very helpful and friendly. Disappointed on paying for parking ($15 a day). I would understand in San Juan, New York City but not at a resort like this. Overall I would go back to the Gran Melia and would recommend the resort. more

Would not hesitate to stay again 7/22/2011

I would like to congratulate you on your outstanding staff. Three member stand out among all we met: Our butlers Angel M and Angel C. Both were outstanding and made our stay truly amazing. -Angel M Got us aquainted with the resort and provide us with great service. -Angel C provided us with the most outstanding service for our private 25th anniversary dinner in a villa. We will remember this always! Lastly our waiter every morning for breakfast Jose. He has a tremendous warmth and character. He treated us extremely well and deserves praise. Overall our stay was wonderful and I would not hesitate to stay at this property again. more

Highly recommend 7/20/2011

I highly recommend this resort. Very friendly staff. Large well appointed rooms. Great breakfast buffet included in our room rate. Would recommend a car for site seeing and additional food choices for longer than a few days stay. Italian & Asian Restaurants on site for dinner. Resort adjoins Trumpt International Golf Course. Beach area private for resort only. Beautiful blue water and very calm because of reef 150 ft from shore. Sea grass along shoreline. more

Perfect couples resort 7/18/2011

This is the type of vacation my boyfriend and I needed. Soaking in the sun, relaxing, drink in hand. This is not the place to go if you are looking for a wild night life. We both had a great time, this is a perfect couples resort, it is also very family friendly, but if you need to get away from it all this is the place to go. There were plently of guests during our stay, but we were always able to find our own private place on the beach/hammock/lounge chairs, it sometimes felt like we were the only ones there. I highly recommend the Red Level accomodations, full buffet breakfast, private pool, bali beds included, free internet access, unlimited beer, wine and champange from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm, they will actually give six packs to go... The rooms were large, private balcony, really comfortable beds, immaculate. We had a couples massage at the spa, it was great, 20% off with the flair card! I'm from New York, the resort wasn't pricey at all, we ordered in dinner from room service every night or watched the sunset at the outdoor grill, it was very reasonable. We didn't eat in any of the 3 fancy restaurants for dinner, we went to live in our bathing suits and that's what we did. We also bought our own vodka with us from home and snacks, it wasn't a problem at all. They sell alcohol and snacks at the gift shop, so I don't understand why other people are saying it's against resort policy, the price of alcohol in the gift shop is very expensive. The resort is very big, they have golf carts that you can call and be picked up at your room, or you can just flag one down to get from point a to point b. The staff was very courteous, clean cut and well groomed, it looks like someone inspects them daily. Iguana's run free, watch your drink's, they like rum... We had a late flight out, they have a changing room, with a shower and all immenities right were they hold your luggage, a real nice way to end your stay. The Gran Melia is a piece of heaven on earth, can't wait to go back. more

I highly recommend this RESORT to everyone 7/13/2011

Amazing place. I could not say one thing bad about the resort and the WONDERFUL STAFF. The site was very clean, food was amazing and the beach's are breathtaking. We arrived to a very nice large room with a beautiful view. We then had a butler that was most helpful with all of our questions. There are 2 pools and if you are traveling without children I recommend upgrading to the RED LEVEL. That allows you access to the adults only pool as well as complimentary breakfast daily. The staff were great. I highly recommend this RESORT to everyone. more

We have nothing but positive comments and praise for the resort 7/12/2011

We have nothing but positive comments and praise for the resort. The food at all the restarurants was really good. A bit pricey at Tempo and Nami as well as Pasion but worth the value. If you like large cheeseburgers and fries, salads, wraps and overall good food for the price, then Cafe Soleiol and the Wet Bar by the Lagoon Pool are the places to go. What resort can you go to and get a large cheeseburger and hefty amount of fries for $14.00. Not bad for both eh? The service at the resort is wonderful, the conceriege to talk to is Jesus! He is truly a gentleman who enjoys his job. He can make all your dinner reservations and any other requests you might need happen! We had Ricardo as our bellman who took us to our room and insisted on carrying all the luggage to the room. He was very kind and friendly to us and throughtout our vacation at the resort he was there if we needed anything. We stayed in a Deluxe Gardenview Suite that was very spacious with a King Bed, large living area and balcony. The bathroom was huge with an updated roman theme look. Very nice and pleasureable to stay in. Renting a car is not the way to go in Puerto Rico! It is easier to take a taxi to where you need to go to visit or tour. Our tourista taxi driver Harry was the man for the job. He took my wife and I around Old San Juan for a tour as well as dropping us off for a 5-hour break to do some shopping and tour Old San Juan. The Fort at El Morro as well as San Cristobal is definently a place to tour and visit. The museum was nice as well, alot of history to be seen explored and seen in Old San Juan. If you need assistance with making reservations to the Gran Melia in Puerto Rico, go thru Liberty Travel. Very prompt, upscale service that takes all your worries away about scheduling a fun, relaxing vacation to the Carribean. more

Thank you Gran Melia for a wonderful stay 7/11/2011

From the time of our arrival to the time of our checkout we have nothing but wonderful memories, the staff could not be more accomadating, the grounds were beautiful, the food was excellent. Our room was a Junior Suite and it was very spacious with a wonderful view of a pond right off our balcony, our room was done everyday and fresh white towels were given. I will recommend this resort in a heartbeat. Thank you Gran Melia for a wonderful stay. more

Great bargain 7/7/2011

The resort is well laid out and encompasses the end of a peninsula. This means you are quite far from the local town which provides a peaceful and safe setting. The rooms are very large and ours was cleaned properly every day.Yes there is a charge for parking but not if you book a car with Avis (located on property). The pool is enormous and despite the number of rooms/guests, the pool area never felt crowded or noisy. No need to get up at the crack of dawn to claim chairs near the pool. The restaurants are very good, service for us was always acceptable. Most things happen at a slower pace than the mainland but hey, you're on vacation right? Menu prices are little high but one should expect to pay a premium for never having to leave the property to dine. The grounds are impecably kept. The beach may not be what some have in mind as there are some rocky reef areas and not much surf but the water is clear and warm. Paying $1000 for airfare to San Juan from Boston and 8 nights at the Gran Melia was a great bargain. After reading many of the other reviews it seems that some people just have unrealistic expectations or didn't research the destination well enough to know what to expect. more

Stay was amazing! 6/21/2011

We booked the Red Level Service for our honeymoon and we were a little nervous that it wouldn't be everything they advertised. Yes it is a bit far from San Juan but we knew we weren't leaving the resort. Our three-night stay was amazing!!! From the moment we arrived, it was one delightful experience after another. The hotel itself is gorgeous. If aesthetics matter to you, then this is the place for you. If you are a romantic, then this is the place for you. If you like to relax and rest, then this is the place for you. The food at the sushi restaurant on the property is delicious! Both women sushi chefs (we ate their twice) prepared some of the best combinations we've ever had. We really didn't think the prices were all that pricey. I mean it isn't cheap, but who wants cheap sushi? Now onto one itty bitty tiny negative.... the sheets really do smell. We had to laugh because they really do stink. We surmised that because it is so incredibly humid there, the room is constantly saturated. Which in turn might account for that not so fresh smell. Now onto the pros.... SERVICE! If you like to feel special, this place is for you. The staff and butlers go out of their way. Especially Jose our breakfast waiter, Edgar in the Royal Service Lounge, Eddie another Royal Service Butler, Angel C., and last and most importantly Angel M. He is without a question an asset and a credit to the Gran Melia. We had the time of our lives!!! more

The resort is breathtakingly beautiful 6/15/2011

My husband and I stayed at Gran Melia for a week. We upgraded our stay to Royal Service (RS) and boy was it worth it!!! RS included a decent breakfast, quality drinks and h'dourvers from 6pm-9pm and a separate pool and lounge...The resort is breathtakingly beautiful. The grounds are very well-maintained and both the general and RS pools were amazing. The staff was wonderful and very helpful. Overall, we were very satisfied with the resort and would go back to it in a heartbeat... The beach at the resort is not too great but does suffice. Personally, I loved hanging out in the RS pool sipping pina colada's or reading a book in the shade of the palapas overlooking the ocean. It’s a self-sufficient resort with a casino and good restaurants for people who want to just stay in. The sushi at the Asian bistro restaurant was pretty good but since we love exploring a new place we went out for the local food almost every day and there are plenty of places to choose from in close vicinity and at cheaper prices too. Try the local food – bbq chicken, mofongo, pork chops etc. El Yunque rain forest is situated very close to the resort and we went there 2 days. Once day we drove around the forest taking pictures of the gorgeous landscape and the next day we went hiking. It is a must-do for anyone who hasn't been to a rain forest before. Book a car online as it is much cheaper and go visit at least the rainforest, biobay (we went kayaking at night through the mangrove channel into the luminescent bio bay), and Old San Juan. Snorkeling near Flamenco beach was a lot of fun. We went on the 1 day snorkeling tour with East Island Excursions…totally worth it. Flamenco beach is gorgeous…one of the best in the world. Back to the resort, it is safe, family friendly, good food, spectacular décor and felt like paradise to me. Go enjoy the resort but don’t forget to see a bit of the island…it is simply beautiful. more

this place is a great value 6/13/2011

before we left i read some reviews that said the gran melia was great but far away from any thing.this is so untrue yes its not in san juan but it was close to the rain forest the snorkeling trips the snuba trips the bio-bay trips so it was better than staying in town I mean you are in the carribaen. now i would suggest rental car because you can explore more for less but the melia has transport any where for a fee.the service was great you couldn't ask for better.the staff was wonderful frankie head of house keeping made apoint to check with us dayly to make sure we were ok.Lus was part of the concier sevice very friendly ready to make you happy.the pool side service was also great.I did think the breakfast buffet was priced to high for what it was. but over all this place is a great value. we look forward to going back. more

VERY friendly 6/9/2011

Upon check in (which took all of 5 minutes, no waiting, maybe because we checked in on Sunday afternoon) they upgraded us to an ocean view suite which was AWESOME! The place is GORGEOUS! The staff was VERY friendly and many of them called us by name in their greeting. We had ZERO problems... the first night our air was not blowing cold, in 10 minutes they were there and fixed it promptly. RENT A CAR AT THE AIRPORT AND PAY FOR PARKING, as we did. We drove out for all of our meals and LOVED the local food.. try Beebo's BBQ by airport in SanJuan for best local food. The whole island is beautiful and we spent a whole day just driving around it looking.... AGAIN, I cannot stress how wonderful our stay was more

Amazing 6/6/2011

this resort was amazing.. everything was all enclusive.. the rooms were gorgeous and the food was 24 hours. The resort itself had several different resteruants my personal favorite was the Japanese the food literally metaled in your mouth. There was a trolly that took you to were ever you wanted all over the resort. I definatly recommend this place ! more

I am EXTREMELY picky 6/2/2011

I am EXTREMELY picky and never stay in a hotel with less than 4 stars. Everything was perfect from start to finish. We also did the Royal Service Oceanfront service. The staff was FABULOUS. After arriving at the hotel, we were whisked off to the special room where Royal Service guests are checked in. We were offered champagne during this process (or any other drink that we desired). All restaurant reservations were made for us at that time. Then we were taken to our room. The room was very nice and the jacuzzi on the balcony was great. I could write for days about how nice our stay was but the fact that we just booked a December vacation at another Paradisus property in Cancun should tell all! Enjoy!!! more

All in all- I would stay here again! 5/31/2011

Everything was wonderful! We were picked up at the airport on schedule and wisked into the most beautiful resort I have ever visited. It was amazing! Our bungalow overlooking beautiful gardens and the ocean; the amazing service and ultra-friendly biligual staff; the choice of restaurants (we didn't need a single reservation and we dined at all of them); the unbelievable pool; and the abundance of activities- all were fabulous! I highly recommend the trip to the Rain Forest - but wear the proper shoes for the best traction on the trails. Our guide for this tour was tops. All in all- I would stay here again! more

Excellent staff 5/27/2011

We loved our stay. The staff was always so friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to say hello and ask if there was anything we needed. The food was great, the service was great, the rooms were gorgeous. It could not have been a better vacation. We are thinking of going back and taking our kids based on the staff of the resort. The staff of any place can make or break a business, and this resort has excellent staff. more

Perfect 5/26/2011

Excellent quality for an all-inclusive resort. Service and staff were fantastic, as well as restaurants, rooms, everything! Try out the "Royal Service" room categories - greatly worth the extra money. Perfect for a family getaway or a romantic honeymoon destination! more
