The resort is well laid out and encompasses the end of a peninsula. This means you are quite far from the local town which provides a peaceful and safe setting. The rooms are very large and ours was cleaned properly every day.Yes there is a charge for parking but not if you book a car with Avis (located on property). The pool is enormous and despite the number of rooms/guests, the pool area never felt crowded or noisy. No need to get up at the crack of dawn to claim chairs near the pool. The restaurants are very good, service for us was always acceptable. Most things happen at a slower pace than the mainland but hey, you're on vacation right? Menu prices are little high but one should expect to pay a premium for never having to leave the property to dine. The grounds are impecably kept. The beach may not be what some have in mind as there are some rocky reef areas and not much surf but the water is clear and warm. Paying $1000 for airfare to San Juan from Boston and 8 nights at the Gran Melia was a great bargain. After reading many of the other reviews it seems that some people just have unrealistic expectations or didn't research the destination well enough to know what to expect.
