For my first date with a gentlemen, I chose this restaurant. I have always wanted to find a reason to eat there and so I thought that this would be the perfect time. We had reservations for 6.30. When we got there, we were led to the back room which was dark and chilly. Obviously they were short on staff because it took approx. 5 min. for someone to show up then another 10 to get my drink. We sat there for approx. 20 min. and the whole time I was miserable. There were a group of college kids in the next room that was yelling and screaming. There were approx. 80 in all. I couldn't even talk to my date. I asked the manager if he would please ask them to quieten down a little so the rest of us could enjoy our time at the restaurant but his exact words were the following: ""No, I will not. They have been coming here every year for the past few years and I am not going to bother them"". I was not the only one to complain nor the only one to leave. I will never go there again. I understand that this group was having fun but if I feel that if they were disrupting the other patrons, then it is the the managers duty to say something or else risk losing business from future customers who will want to come by multiple times throughout the year. It seems to me that all he cared about at the time was these individuals and how much money he was going to make rather than the 2 of us or anyone else there. more

Unorganized and Rude 1/2/2012

Had an incredibly bad experience at this establishment on New Years Eve. We called and were told that they were no longer taking reservations, however walk ins were welcome and the wait was 30 minutes. Free valet parking was great, hostess greeted us, and we were told the wait would be 30 minutes. We seated ourselves at the nice bar in the hotel lobby had a couple of beverages and checked back in 45 minutes, ""oh, sorry, it'll still be another 30 minutes by the hostess and manager. Back to the bar.. One hour later checked back in and were told it should only be another 10 minutes. After another 30 minutes went by.... Went back to hostess stand, met by the manager (Raymond), were told that they had no idea when they could seat us, and that we should have made reservations. I calmly explained that we requested a reservation, but were told that walk ins were welcome. He became very flustered, extremely rude and walked away without even an offer of an apology. After over 2 hours of waiting, we left unfed, were told by other patrons that had eaten there already, that we didn't miss anything, that the food wasn't very good. In short, they were dishonest, rude an clearly could not manage a busy evening service. more

Ok food, HORRIBLE SERVICE 6/5/2010

I took a few of my friends here from out of town since we were staying in the Hotel Indigo. To start with, the waitress rolled her eyes when we wanted drink menus and she gave us only one for the group. When we ordered, she did not even know the drinks! She had to get a menu and look for herself. We wanted the white/shrimp sauce that most hibachi places give everyone. When I asked she brought one bowl. When another person in the group wanted some, she told them to share with me across another person! The final problem was when the cook added pineapple to the chicken after cooking it through the whole meal. This was not listed on the menu and one of my friends was allergic. The cook tried to fix it but the damage was done. When she asked the waitress to remove just the chicken from her price (she had a combination dinner) she then rolled her eyes again and acted like it was her problem. She then got the manager who agreed to take $5 off but said next time my friend should inform them of all her allergies BEFORE ordering, even if something is not listed on the menu. They then charged her 18% gratuity automatically when they did not do it for anyone else in the party!!! So even though you get horrible service, you still have to pay! The food was ok but with this service, there are several other hibachis in Nashville that I would prefer paying those prices. Pros: Hibachi food, sushi Cons: SERVICE more

Long Wait. Unhelpful Staff. 10/25/2009

I had a reservation for 14 people at 8:30 p.m., we weren't seated until 9:45 p.m. When we were finally seated we were shocked to discover there was only enough room for 12. When we tried to approach the host about our problem we were informed that we couldn't possibly have made a reservation for 14 because they only accept reservations up to 12. We squeezed in with another party so that we could all fit and 10 minutes later the host returned to tell us that they couldn't seat our entire party, to which we pointed out that we had already fixed the problem. Pros: Good Food. Cons: Awful Experience more

very trendy, strong drinks! Great sushi 1/31/2009

our visit to Goten was a fabulous experience. it was my son's birthday and he says he wants to go there every year. we had a large group from babies to elderly and everyone left happy. i had sushi but others eating hibachi loved it. Pros: free valet, great sushi, strong drinks Cons: had to wait for table more

Super disappointed! 6/30/2008

I LOVE Japanese steakhouses and we'd earned a night out! We'd heard so many good things about Goten and I was super excited. I left the restauraunt heartbroken. The service was good, but the food was subpar at best. The salad dressing was nowhere as good as everyone elses, The dipping sauces were not tasty in the least, the rice was bland...I'd rather go to a chinese buffet... Pros: The place is pretty, people come in looking nice. Really feels like something special. Cons: The food is gross. more

Great sushi, good service 4/10/2008

This was hands down my best dining experience in Nashville. The service was good and the waitress made sure to take care of us. The sashimi was excellent. Rolls tasted fresh and the wasabi portions with the rolls and sashimi were generous thankfully. Plates were brought out timely and beers did not get completely empty before the next one was brought. Type of service and quality of food I am accustomed to in Houston. Good job! Pros: food, service, prices Cons: college kids more

overpriced, not entertaining 2/11/2008

We have been to many japanese style steak houses and this one was the worst. The chef at the table while friendly was not entertaining at all. We also watched the chef at the next table and he was not entertaining either. They served ketchup as the condiment for the steak and some oily concoction for the shrimp. Plus the filet was cut very small and overcooked. The shrimp appetizer was not seasoned and the veggies were boring as well. The sushi, however, was very good and fast. It was $120 for 3 people and no alcohol! I will not go back and will not recommend this restaurant to anyone. the chain Japanese steakhouse Benihana is better than Goten. Pros: sushi fast and good, valet service friendly Cons: Hibachi experience not good, ketchup served for the steak, felt rushed more

Avoid at all cost 1/25/2008

I have been to many Japanese Steakhouse and i have to say entertainment was at a low... i felt as if they were rushing our party and the serves was no where to be found... the Sauces were tatseless and i over all i would not recommended this place to anyone... Hate to be negative but it's the truth... Pros: food was ok Cons: parking, Cost, Not friendly more

Unbelievably rude manager 8/17/2007

Have been going there for year and have enjoyed it as fresh sushi as one can get in Nashville with good Hibachi though perhaps a bit overpriced. Tonight, thought my 2 year old might enjoy the Hibachi Grill. She was startled by the brief fire at the beginning and cried for about 15 seconds(honest) then stopped. No big deal right? WRONG. The manager had the nerve to approach my wife, and ask her to take my child outside. I was absolutely shocked and told her if someone actually voiced a complaint within 15 seconds including the time it took her to walk over, then i'd like to know about it. She replied that she had kids too and was just giving me a ""heads up!"". ""Heads up?!"" in case what I wondered? I'm an Asian professional who has been eating at Japanese restaurants for years and have never been treated so rudely and inappropriately. A manager should never have the right to tell a parent what to do with their child. Hibachi grills are noisy by nature, they have child seats for crying out loud! Gimme a break, this is supposed to be a family-friendly restaurant. If it had gone on for more than a minute we certainly would have taken her out, because that's what parents do, not because we were ordered by an idiot. Well, we didn't get that chance and didn't get up except to complain later. In summary, would strongly recommend against this restaurant for any parent who might have kids with vocal cords. We'll be contacting ownership about this one. Hopefully, this is an isolated event from a manager that needs to be ""educated"" herself. Feel sorry for her kids. Pros: Good Hibachi Quality w/generous portions, relatively fresh sushi Cons: Rude management. Not good for children with vocal cords. more

Less than meduim quality for the price. If your not in a group to entertain yourself forget it. 5/23/2007

We were rather disappointed with the Goten experience. I usually give places 3 chances to make a good impression but 2 is all I could handle of Goten. I travel and make a point to check out japanese steak houses everywhere I go. I have been to over 30 different ones in my travels. At Goten the quality and quantity was not there. The meat was tough and the seafood tasted old which upset my guest and my gut. The value does not exist here. Pros: Location Cons: everything else more

DO NOT GO! 5/16/2007

I would not recommend Goten and all the splendor they have pumped themselves up to be. I dined there for an afternoon lunch, hence I needed to get in and get out. First, the waitress was very snappy and seemed very impatient. I was a little confused because I thought taking orders fell into her job scope. I ordered the chicken teriyaki and requested broccoli instead of rice ( doing the low carb thing). They served me the green tea, soup and salad....that was fine. Then, they brought out my main dish with rice no broccoli. The lady that took my order came over and confirmed what I wanted....so I was a little confused on why it was wrong in the first place. Then, they brought it back correct but the chicken teriyaki was cold. I asked if it could be hot(silly me) and I got a puzzling look and a ""hold on"" let me check. She came back said they could warm it up in the skillet but would not re-cook it and would not refund. Not sure why this was the first thing she said....maybe she was programmed. At this point, I was already late and starving. So, I stated ""okay"" and they slightly warmed it up, brought it back along with the check ( no discounts or apology). I politely paid and left. Customer service is definitely a thing of the past.........DON'T GO TO GOTEN! Thank you:) Pros: No Pros Cons: Poor customer service and poor presentation overall more

I'll go-back to go-ten 5/10/2007

A little pricey, but worth it. Really good service. This is one of the better hibachi sites in Nashville. Sushi is not bad, but I liked the hibachi better. Overall, a pretty good dining experience. We'll be back for sure. Pros: Good service, nice ambience, good food Cons: a little pricey more

Best Sushi Ever 4/2/2007

I have to tell you that this place blew me away! It was a nice restaurant that wasn't overpriced especially for the quality that you receive. The service was excellent and the food was amazing! I will definitely come back again and again! Pros: Excellent food and service Cons: No Cons! more

Very good 3/25/2007

I was excited to be able to finally find a tofu dish at a Japanese restaurant. The dish and the vegetables were absolutely delicious. My gf had the lobster, chicken and filet mignon and she just raved about it. The drinks were delicious - we had a chocolate type martini and one called the Extreme Miranda . The dessert selection (cheesecake or orange sherbet) was simple and the sherbert cleansed the palate nicely. Pros: Excellent food and service more

Sushi was not good! 4/26/2006

I was so disappointed by Goten's sushi. The rice was dry and the roll was just...tasteless! Won't go back... Pros: Neat Building Cons: Bland sushi, Smells like oil more

Best Japanese Place 6/12/2005

I have been eating there for over 5 years. I have great time everytime I go. The service is great and food is the bomb. Pros: FOOD, PARKING more

Amazing Japanese Hibachi 8/7/2003

I couldn't actually care less about sushi and miso soup and whatever else comes in a bento box that anyone can get in a multitude of hole-in-the-wall Japanese restaurants. Goten is about hibachi, and that makes it amazing to me. My girlfriend and I eat there every single month and crave the fried rice and hibachi chicken and shrimp always. Simply the best Japanese you could imagine, never been disappointed in the show, service, food, or ambiance. Pros: Hibachi food, Fried Rice, Show while eating Cons: Parking, nothing else more

Great sushi, good service 1/29/2003

This place has some of the best sushi I've had and I've been on both coasts.(aren't I cosmopolitan?heehee) Anyway I don't know what everyone is complaining about as far as service goes, the wait staff and hosts have always been very accommodating and pleasant. Sure there's a long wait sometimes at the hibachi grill, even if you have reservations and that can be a little annoying(sure you can take the reservation, but you didn't keep the reservation and that's really the most important part of the reservation, don't you think?) more
