Best

Im officially in love with Gladstone's restaurant in mailibu. it is so beautifull there and not only that the food is amazing too. I'm a picky person and i like me some good soup....

Worst

This is like so many places all over the U.S. Beach cities are full of these fish barns. This is one of the worst. Don't go expecting good food, service, or drinks. The only thin...

running on empty 9/7/2009

my family frequented this establishment for years, the food was good, the drinks were excellent, the prices reasonable and the service superb. however, this chapter has come to an end. last saturday sep 5 2009, we went to have lunch there. what happened to one our favorite restaurants?! the food was disgusting, the drinks watery, the prices astronomical, and the only thing that stayed was the service (Robert was our server, and he was great). for a beyond mediocre lunch for four (two adults and two kids) we were charged a whopping $160! we had to turn back our appetizer as it was cold and rubbery (fried calamari). the wedge salad was wilted and nasty, the "special" sword fish smelled very strongly like fish (old), the chicken sandwich was drier than a piece of cardboard, my child wouldn't touch it, and the pasta was overcooked. and to add insult to injury, the price tag was so excessive you would think you had a dinner at a five star restaurant. when we commented on this, our server said that under a new management things went pretty much downhill, many people complained, and the clientele attrition was rather large. well, they lost us as well. we will not be coming back and dissuade all our friends from doing so. this is shameful! the unmitigated greed of the new management is simply appalling. to run a landmark like this into the ground is simply criminal. very upsetting and disappointing. thought you might want to know. aaron gilman woodland hills, ca Pros: service and location Cons: overpriced, bad food, bad drinks more

burgers rock 8/4/2009

Had a great time. Sat at bar had good service great burger and a few cocktails. more

great place for a drink and some seafood 7/31/2009

So long as your willing to get on the PCH, gladstone's is the best place to go. It has amazing views of the ocean (restaurant is lieterally on the ocean) and the food and drinks are amazing. Came here with a few friends the other day and we loved it. great for watching the waves while having a great meal. Pros: cocktails, service, views, food Cons: the drive to malibu more

Great Spot!!!!!!!!!!!!! 7/29/2009

I went surfing and this restaurant was right by me when I got out of the water. My friend and I went there for lunch. He got the fish tacos and loved them, I got the seafood sampler and lost my mind, it was so good. The waitress was a darling. The head chef came out to see how everything was and he was super cool. Then we had this crazy brownie ice cream desert that was to die for. I love, love, loved this place. Pros: The Food, The Service, and the View Cons: None more

appalling service 7/18/2009

I don't often review services but this was so appalling I felt compelled. I sent some family members here. There was a piece of metal in one of their meals. After reporting the issue, the manager not only failed to apologize for the terrible mistake, but the waiter said "people sometimes stages these things". They were mortified at their five year anniversary dinner. This service is absolutely inexcusable. Pros: the view Cons: horrible customer service more

Go somewhere else! 4/15/2009

Scenario: You eat at a restaurant. You have oysters, shrimp cocktail, clam chowder, & halibut. Yum! right? Well, you go home an hour later and your face is in the toilet because you are throwing it all up. You also have fever, chills, fullness sensation, and borborymus for the rest of the day. What do you think you have? Food ppoisoning?? According to the manager, Yvette, that is not food ppoisoning, it's something else but she just can't remember the name of it. Food ppoisoning presents itself a day after not an hour after eating, she says. It must have been something I ate in the morning (a pear) b/c a fruit is very cleansing. Umm.. no. Well that's what happened to me. And according to several MDs I spoke to, confirmed my diagnosis. Yvette tried to blame my illness on the food combination and not contaminated food. Meaning it's my fault and not the restaurant. If it was from eating different types of food, I would not be throwing up 6 different times. It was my first time at the restaurant and most definitely my last. Don't eat here, unless you want to regret it later. And FYI, they have a F rating on bbb-dot-org and according to the health dept, Gladstone's major problem is no hot water in the food prep room. How disgusting is that? I wonder why I got sick?!? To verify this, go to the health dept website. Pros: can look out into the ocean Cons: contaminated food more

FOOD? AHHHH...NOOOO 3/22/2009

The view at Gladstones can't be beat. I do suggest that if you're going to visit, go with a full stomach. The days of fish slapped on the grill and served with lack luster sides are gone and, the food is way over priced and lacks imagination. My boyfriend and I decided to entertain out of town guest at Gladstones thinking that the "California Experience" that this place has to offer would compensate for the food. ( Gladstones has NEVER been known for the food). Boy, were we wrong!!!!! NO SEASONING, NO SAUCES, NO GARNISHMENT ON ANYTHING!!! Let's start at the beginning. The wait (with a reservation) we were o.k. with, being sat with a glorious view of the kitchen, we were o.k. with, over cooked seafood with no imagination (the kitchen staff has no idea how to prepare seafood) corn on the cobb and red potatoes boiled in water(nothing on them) and a $25 seafood salad with wilted, yesterdays iceberg lettuce? now you've lost me! To top all of this off, from our table we could hear the owner of Gladstones (we later asked who this horrid woman was) screaming, cursing at and berating an employee. Our overall experience was terrible not to mention embarrassing. I could never again patronize a business that doesn't care about it's product and treats its employees less than human. For $50 per person (2 drinks p.p., lunch) there are other places with a view. Pros: GREAT VIEWS/GOOD SERVICE Cons: BLAND FOOD/NATZI MANAGEMENT more

Go For The Beach Only 12/29/2008

This is like so many places all over the U.S. Beach cities are full of these fish barns. This is one of the worst. Don't go expecting good food, service, or drinks. The only thing going for this place is the beach. Oh, be advised, it is way, way ovepriced. Even brunch can run $50 or more per person with one or two drinks and two courses. They, of course, push the most expensive things on the menu. The surf and tur is so ridiculously priced, I wonder if anyone in their right mind orders it. Expect cold food, uncaring services who smile on cue and recite robotic information. It does have the beach. Better idea? Get take out in Santa Monica and eat on the beach. Pros: Beach Cons: Cold food more

Have you tried the chowder? How about the chocolate cake? 8/23/2008

Ah, Gladstone's....paradise with good food - and great (and strong) drinks! Try a Mai-Tai, segue into a bowl of the best clam chowder anywhere, maybe a nice fresh piece of salmon and then that Mile-High Chocolate Cake (one piece can easily feed four). Casual, fun and delicious Pros: The View, the setting, the drinks, the sourdough bread and the dessert Cons: Can't think of a single one more

Location, location, location!! 8/13/2008

One word: location! Fantastic! This place doesn't look like anything special from the road - the flags sort of looked like some sort of ship re-creation; but once inside, you'll find a charming place. The seafood is FRESH, like just out of the tank fresh, and not just the lobster but a few of us got the swordfish and you can usually tell if it's been sitting around in a freezer for a week. This was fantastic. The service was great - we were well taken care of, and when they mistook one of the sides (for a x2 side dish) for one of us, the correct side was promptly delivered, with the mistaken side left with us. Our waiter was very attentive - very experienced, giving great recommendations. It's a little pricy here for every day, but you certainly get quality, and the portions are of good size. Definitely give this a go - thumbs up!! Pros: Fresh seafood, service excellent, nice ambience, great value Cons: Not necessary to charge for parking, but they do! more

Tourist trap, but with good reason 7/22/2008

So, yes Gladstone's is kind of a typical place to go in Malibu, especially if you're visiting, or if it's prom night for Malibu High, but it holds that place for a reason. The food actually is good, the fish is always fresh and their crabcakes are definitely some of the best around. Yes, you are going to have to stand on line Yes, you might see Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears, but all of these things add to the sheer Malibu-ness of the place and don't change the fact that it's pretty good seafood with incredible views. I don't frequent this place, and never would, but it's definitely worth doing once. more

Wow... Worst food for your money, period. 7/9/2008

I know that seafood restaurants on the beach are infamous for not serving meals that equal the location but this place tops (bottoms) them all. I have lived in Los Angeles for 18 years and have dined at every seafood restaurant worth noting including eating at Gladstones about a year and a half ago. What a difference during our last visit. The crab is undercooked and my friends portion seemed to have freezer burn. Too many things to mention, long story short, after spending $400 dollars for a party of four we didnt even want to take the leftovers home. I've had better seafood in Nebraska. Too bad, its a great beach location. Pros: Ocean views. Cons: Food. Food. Food. more

Tourist trap 6/18/2008

Ate there last night in a party of 9. Great atmosphere, wait staff/service, and scenery! But ... the food was mediocre at best. Everyone in our group had the same comment upon leaving and waiting for our cars at the valet. The calamari appetizer was very over-cooked, the crab cake appetizer was much too small, and many of our dishes were under-cooked. Not a good thing for scallops and shrimp. The side dishes were very lacking in quality, or at least anything that made them special. If you want large portions, beachfront dining, and sand/peanut shells on the floor, then Gladstone's ought to make you happy. If you're expecting great seafood for the price, then keep looking. Pros: Large portions, scenery, outdoor dining Cons: Seagulls everywhere, food quality, parking more

Great View, Great Clam Chowder... 12/30/2007

The view was amazing, and the Clam Chowder was the best I ever had. Everything else was O.K. The waiters were fun and the theres really wasn't a long wait to be sitted. The place is expensive for a casual restaurant and the wait for the food kind of long... Pros: The View of the Coastline/Ocean Cons: The Wait for the food more

Average food with a great view 11/24/2007

Gladstone's located at the end of Sunset Blvd down by the ocean is one of my favorite places to take visiting family members. The food is nothing really fantastic...just plain good. But the view and location and the friendliness and attention by the wait staff all add up to a great dining experience. Make sure to take your leftovers home, as they'll be custom wrapped in aluminum swans, lobsters, or whatever else the staff can come up with. Parking is convenient nearby. Evenings generally aren't busy in my experience. Put this on your list for the tourist. Pros: Artistic take home designs Cons: Average quality food more

Great for special occasions! Delcious chocolate cake. Seafood is ok. Creative foil packaging for leftovers 10/10/2007

I always have a nice time at Gladstones. If you call in advance, you can arrange for a customized item to be put on the paper place mats (e.g. "Happy birthday John Smith") and on the electronic sign in the restaurant. Service is good. Appetizers are delicious. Order dessert and have your server wrap up the left overs for you in gold foil that is shaped like a swan, dolphin, you name it! Plus, the smelling the nearby ocean after eating and feeling the seabreeze on your way in and out is refreshing. Pros: Good for Special Occasions, Sufficient parking, Near Ocean, Good Service, Good Food Cons: Popular restaurant so there might be a wait to be seated more

Average seafood, good atmosphere 7/16/2007

The seafood at Gladstone's was just average. I had a broiled seafood combo platter and it was exactly 50/50 - shrimp was not that great, salmon was so dry, swordfish and scallops were both decent. I did like the sides a lot(I had corn on the cob and mashed potatoes). The atmosphere was good, can't beat being by the water and they have an outdoor deck and free peanuts while you wait. If you're looking for really good seafood, I would go somewhere else, but if you're just looking to eat by the water, then it works. Pros: By the water, peanuts while you wait Cons: So-so seafood more

Undercooked and stale food with bad service. Don't bother 3/10/2007

I have been going to gladstone's for well over ten years, but over the past few years the service and food has gotten worse and worse. I recently went with family who was visiting from out of town. We made reservations for dinner, and got there more than a half hour early to stand in line to give our name. It took over 40 minutes to get to the hostess desk, and by the time we got there they claimed we were late and they gave away our table. We asked for the manager who claims that they will give tables away if no one shows, even though we were there early. It wasn't until we started raising our voices that they even gave us the time of day. About 20 minutes later they finally seated us. Our food was cold, the bread was stale and we coudln't even get our waiters attention. Two weeks later I went with a large group for a birthday party and we had to wait an hour to seat ten people because they realized booths wouldn't fit us after trying to shove us into every booth they could. Everyone complained that their food was very greasy, cold or undercooked. The waiters dropped the food in one persons lap and didn't even apologize. All I can say is the service is getting sloppier and the food isn't as fresh and tasty as it used to be. If your looking for fresh seafood and good service go elsewhere Pros: Decent drinks, nice views at window tables Cons: Bad service, very crowded on weekends more

Walked out due to extremely rude host and manager 1/24/2007

The host's extremely rude service prompted us to leave before eating. I dropped in with my girlfriend last night after hearing good things about the restaurant and were delighted to see the excellent window views. A boorish host seated us and walked away. The particular section turned out to be pretty packed and cheerfully noisy - usually the kind of ambiance we like, but we were in the middle of a serious discussion about an illness in the family and needed a quieter spot. So we moved to a different table in a quieter spot and picked up our conversation. The same host who seated us noticed us, and *shouted* at us above the din across the entire room, "YOU GUYS CAN SIT THERE ALL NIGHT LONG BUT DON'T THINK THAT YOU'RE GOING TO BE GETTING ANY SERVICE!" We were flabbergasted. Any gracious person would have walked over and politely explained that the section was closed, asking us to move back or ideally listening to our request and moving us to an acceptable but quieter table. But this Gladstone host instead chose to shout at us across the room, embarrassing us (as well as himself and his restaurant) on a night when my girlfriend was feeling particularly down. We left. A few minutes later, my girlfriend was still in a huff, and wanted to say something to the manager. We went back, she asked the host to get the manager, and both of them came out with smirks on their faces. My girlfriend's native language is not English, and she was quite upset, which I suppose was a source of amusement to both of them. In explaining the situation to the manager, my girlfriend unfortunately referred to the host using a rude term. At that point, apparently the manager decided that the host had been absolved of all wrongdoing. Smirks remained. We will not be returning. more
