Potentially great experience marred by lousy service. 6/11/2011

I can't recall the last time a waiter actually displayed disdain for me. It seemed the waiter at Ginza was just too put out to have to do anything for us. He was too preoccupied with lounging in a booth and chatting up the equally too-cool-for-everything hostess. He never cleared our table, never asked about the quality of the meals, was too distracted to refill our drinks and, when we were finished, he just walked by and dropped the bill on the table without a word. As good as the food was, the service was so abysmal we'll never go back. If the owners don't care enough about the customers to hire quality help then I'm not going to waste my money and time on their enterprise. And neither should you, especially when there's a plethora of great Japanese restaurants in this city, most of them hurting from the economy and dying to get you in the door. Ginza is one hole-in-the-wall that ought to be spackled up. more

Avoid Ginza 4/9/2011

This was the worst dining experience I have ever had. \r \r Rolls = lackluster and falling apart\r Service = orders partially delivered until asked for again\r Server = worst I have ever encountered\r \r We have great sushi downtown. Go somewhere else. more

EXCELLENT SUSHI 10/5/2010

Excellent sushi, environment, and overall service. As for the baja roll that isn't on the menu. It is incredible, the chefs know what they are doing and your taste buds will thank you later. \r \r Especially good if you want to fly undert he radar and not deal with the wait at Takashi. To me Takashi is over-rated. Try Ginza and you'll be an immediate fan!\r \r Skylar Taylor more

Best in Utah 9/6/2010

I'll admit it, I am a Ginza sushi addict! This is, in my opinion, the best sushi-house in Utah. Discount nights are excellent as well. The service is also incredibly friendly at the Draper location. more

Amazing sushi 3/17/2010

This place is definitely a dive joint, but the food makes up for the lack of atmosphere and slow service. I'm from a family of food snobs, and we all love this place. Best sushi in SLC! GET THE MARS ROLL! Pros: MARS ROLL Cons: slow service, no atmosphere appeal more

Best Sushi in SLC 12/28/2009

A lot of people will drive by this place thinking it is a dive... However, what it may lack in sidewalk appeal it makes up for in great sushi. I have never had a bad piece of fish from here. They also have a great variety of rolls here - and are the inventors of the Mars Twist which now every other place has a copy... The Baja Sunset is also a unique roll to try. I don't know about the Draper restruant but the 2nd south one is great. I have been to most every other one in the city and this is the best. Pros: Fresh sashimi and great sushi rolls more

Worst Sushi Experience Ever. (Draper location) 10/24/2008

We visited this location on a Friday night. A half an hour before their official closing time, they starting throwing up chairs, told us it was ""last call"" to order more rolls, and made it blatantly obvious that they were ""bothered"" to have us there so late. Again, this was 30 mins before closing! The final straw was before we even got our sushi, they asked us to pay. The woman returned seriously 4 mins later as I was trying to eat, and asked for the receipt! I could not believe the rush everyone was in to get out of there by 10!! Sadly, I take clients to the downtown location all the time, but because of this, I will no longer. The sushi was so-so as well. Only one sushi chef was nice about the whole thing. We seriously were done and left at 10:04PM, 4 mins after their official closing time!!. Poor poor service. We won't return. With so many great sushi places around, why would ya? Pros: In a hurry? They will scoot you along to get you out before closing! Cons: Poor, rushed, service and sushi that was overall ""so so"". I'll go else where. more

Superb Sushi 8/8/2008

The sushi is superb, the service is friendly, and the prices are reasonable. The only criticism involves cleanliness. The walls near diners should be cleaned spotless. Pros: Food, ambience, service, prices Cons: cleanliness more

Stay Away From Ginza!! 7/10/2008

My husband and I went to the Ginza in Draper tonight - totally disappointed. \r \r Food:\r We each ordered miso (which is usually a telltale sign when you start off with bad miso soup)\r We also ordered a few sushi rolls(which were $13.95 a roll) When they came to the table they looked and tasted pretty dull. For that amount of money - I would have expected something better than $35 worth of sushi crammed together on some salad plate. It just did not look appetizing at all!!\r \r Service:\r I was still eating and the waitress reached over and tried to take my plate! She asked ""are you all done or are you still picking at that!"" My husband and I just stared at her - what? The description for my roll said it was topped with eel sauce - nope! nothing. (had to ask for some) My husbands roll was supposed to be topped with mint leaves -nada. (not that it would have improved the taste)\r \r Anyways - if you are looking for decent sushi - STAY AWAY FROM GINZA!! I cant imagine how this location is still in business with how expensive and disappointing the food was. I'm going back to Suehiro in Ft Union. At least you can expect decent service and a lot better food. Pros: nothing Cons: overpriced food, presentation was NOT good, food tasted pretty dull, Serive was rushed more

Best sushi, beautiful atmosphere, great prices 6/20/2008

I always drove by Ginza with wonder. From the outside it doesn't appear to be the most chic place, but it truly is. The interior is beautiful, and much more spacious than you would assume from its facade. I am not a sushi expert- but have consumed my share of it, and was impressed with the rolls. I had the X-roll, and the baja roll, which was creative, spicy, and totally satisfying. Most assuredly would reccommend to savvy salt lake citizens!!! Pros: Great selection of sushi/beverages, cheap, all around awesome Cons: none, totally AWESOME more

Ginza 6/14/2008

I eaten at Ginza for years. For my birthday on March 31st, my young son took me there. This was the first time I was ever treated bad. My order was wrong, the spices were wrong, I only got part of what I ordered, and had a hard time getting my server because she was on the phone. Not to mention that they were (workers) having a bet on how fast a piece of fish can get hot on a hot plate or oven, I could not see what they had the fish on. I finally got up asked for more napkins, let them know that what I ordered was all cabbage and the ordered was suppose to come with meat, mushrooms, shrimp and other items. The server told me that they like their cabbage, I told her, so do I, but I did not order cabbage and because the sauce was wrong I would like some chili powder or some waswabi, the server told me that they did not have any. I had to ask her 3 times for water by the time we got the water, we were standing up to leave. My son paid the bill to advoid any problems because it was my birthday, I did not say anything. However, I want Ginza to know that not only was I a loyal customer, refered people to your resturant, I will never come back again. We order two of your most expensive dishes, however, all I got was cabbage with a message that that is what others like who work there. The rice was cold and hard, we never got our egg rolls, nor did I get my dipping sauce that was suppose to come with my order. Pros: used to look nice Cons: there was construction happening when we were there, plastic hanging in front more

Best sushi at a great price! 5/21/2008

Ginza has the best sushi EVER! I highly recommend getting the Miya roll. It is amazing! Also the X roll and mars twist are excellent. Pros: Food Cons: Small building more

Steve and Marlene! 5/17/2008

These sushi chefs are the best! I love the small atmosphere and relatively good service, depends on the night but the waitresses can be really friendly! One of my favorite places to eat. more

No thanks 3/27/2008

Didn't look like it would be good and it wasn't. I know some people like these tiny, out of the way sushi joints, and that's ok if they have great sushi. Sadly the majority of time they do not, which is why they are out of the way. It can happen though which is why I tried it, but I will never go back. more

Great Sushi 3/2/2008

Ginza has some of the best sushi in town! Although the restaurant is quite small, once you are seated and eating the size doesn't seem to matter. The miso soup is a great way to kick off your meal and I suggest trying the X-roll and the Mar's Twist. They also offer tasty dishes from the kitchen but sushi is the way to go. I highly recommend Ginza to anyone looking for a satisfying meal. Pros: The sushi is great Cons: The restaurant has few tables and can get quite busy more

Best sushi in town! 11/16/2007

Now, looking at the location of this place is not going to tell me what kind of food is inside. The bleak, old looking exterior might fool you, but the sushi and the sukiyaki are the best that i have ever had. The liquor menu is minimal, only sake and beer and a little wine, but they have a sparkling sake that is fun to try! The chefs are very nice, the servers- some need more training, but our server this certain night was wonderful. Fridays are busy, and we know this, but we got the best service even for how busy she was. She seems as though she has worked there for a while, she knew the menu, the ingredients, and explained the different types of fish. it was amazing. the X roll is to die for, and the fubuki is wonderful! I would recommend this place to anyone. They are a small restaurant, but have great food and service. Go there! Pros: Fresh fish, yummy noodle dishes Cons: parking, supposedly they don't own the parking lot next door more

New Location Rocks 11/6/2007

New 2nd Location 12300 South 715 East.\r \r I'm sorry that the one customer complaint I see for the new location was for poor service. When My party of 3 ate there on 11/2/07 at 6:30 PM We were promptly seated, and water was on the table within 3 minutes. Then the high tech nature of their order taking caught my attention. They use PDA to take your orders, bill you and bring a check. Great service, great food, great atmosphere.....We rolled out of there after 1.5 hours of great sushi, rice bowls, and green eggs and ham.....delicious. Go there.\r 12300 So 715 East in Draper. Pros: Great Service more

Horrible Service at the Draper location 11/1/2007

I have eaten at the Ginza location downtown and have generally enjoyed the food and service. I was interested in the new Draper location and decided to try it. After being seated, we waited more than 15 minutes and were completely ignored. We weren't asked if we even wanted water! We got up to leave and on the way out I asked if I could speak to the manager. I was directed to the owner/manager behind the sushi bar. I told him that while I have been a customer of his downtown restaurant, we were leaving as we had been waiting a long time without service. Instead of directing service to us or even apologizing, he just said that they were understaffed. Note to owner: don't open a second location if you can't afford to staff it correctly! We will never go to Ginza again. Pros: Don't know Cons: Very poor service more

Ginza is good 12/19/2006

My husband and I highly prefer Ginza over Ichiban. We have not had a problem with the staff, the rolls have always been tight and good and our food has always come to us quickly. Our favorite is the Green Eggs and Ham. I think the only downside of Ginza is the small building. It's a pretty tight squeeze around the sushi bar and there really aren't a whole lot of tables to sit at. Pros: reasonable prices, tasty sushi Cons: small area more

Small, cramped, and completely wonderful! 9/29/2006

Ginza is in a less than lovely part of town, sitting on a run down corner of downtown SLC. It is a small building that can get overcrowded with only a few extra bodies present, but what a wonderful place! The food is great and the crowded, watch your elbows while sitting at your table atmosphere only adds to the charm of Ginza. Servie is sometimes rushed and impersonal, but not to a degree that puts people off, unless those people demand a slow paced, kiss my butt kind of service. If you do, then try this place during a slow time. Dinner time, however, is the time to go if you are in the mood for good food and good atmosphere. Pros: Good food and fun atmosphere. Cons: Can be hard to get a table without waiting.... more
