Not recommended 6/13/2009

Visited this place two nights ago. It ain't what it used to be. Service is very slow. Dining room is grungy. And the prices are high. Don't go there. Pros: Food's okay Cons: Slow Service, Grungy Dining Room more

Bad Food Bad Service 6/13/2009

I started going to Genny's Diner about 10 years ago and tried to make it there at least 4 times a year. but it had been a while ( 1 year) since I had been there and last week I decided to stop in and get a sandwich. It took over 45 minutes to get a Rueben sandwich. The problem was my ""rueben"" turned out to be a meatball sandwich, Tasted terrible. The waitress apoligized and they took $ 1 off my meal. They should have charged me full price because that would be the last dollar I ever spend there. Pros: There are other places to eat Cons: I ate here more

Dirty, Sticky, Overpriced 6/8/2009

The table was sticky and probably has never been cleaned with anything other than water. I had to get up to refill my drink because the waitress was gone for so long. The burger had NO seasoning on it! It tasted like grade D ground beef. The Onion rings were tossed in flour.. no seasoning. Also, the silverware and plates were all dirty. And it cost three of us $40.00 for 3 burgers and an order of frickled pickles... DON""T EVER GO THERE! I worked in restaurants and I see no way this place could pass a health code test. They must pay someone off because I would give them a Fail for sure. Pros: Frickled Pickles were good more

I loved it....will go back again 1/26/2009

I recently visited Louisville and my friends and I went to Genny's we all got the baked spaghetti which was a huge portion and two sides...it was huge...and the frickled pickles were great...everyone took doggie bags home... it was like 11.00 for one person but the portions that they gave us i eat 2 more times on the leftovers...it was worth it... yeah $8.95 is a little expensive for the pickles but split them between 2 people and its not that bad..and there were alot of them.. i will go back to genny's evertime im back up that way Pros: alot of food for the price, very tasty, pickles great Cons: the staff was rude, to long of a wait, prices a little high more

Good Food, Service & Prices for Breakfast 11/20/2008

Date: 11/17/08\r I woke up hungry and wanted a real breakfast so at around 10 AM I drove to Genny's on Frankfort Avenue. The last time I was there was about 4 years ago for lunch. It was good then so I thought I would give them a try for breakfast.\r \r I ordered fried potatoes, ham, gravy, toast and coffee. The waitress was fast and friendly. She brought my coffee and kept the refills coming.\r \r I looked around while waiting and noticed the place hadn't changed much since my last visit. The tables, decorations, fish tanks were all as I remembered them. Not a fancy place, but that's not why I came here.\r \r Within a few minutes my order was brought to my table and, wow, was I suprised. A large serving of potatoes (I mean real fried potatoes with onions and cooked to perfection), an ample serving of tasty ham, bowl of gravy, toast and more hot coffee.\r \r For some reason, when I left I wasn't hungry anymore. In fact, I wasn't hungry until supper. I think I'll go back soon.\r \r For $7.00 + tip, a meal fit for a king (or a hungry person). Pros: Good food and plenty of it. Cons: They don't open until 10 AM. more

New and Improved! 10/24/2008

Genny's Diner recently experienced a swamp fire and had closed down for a while. So I was alittle apprehensive about trying their food after being closed for awhile. I was utterly surprised to find the place sparkling clean, the atmosphere light with my favorite R&B 80's music playing and I am now addicted to their buffalo wings! Mine were breaded and tossed with buffalo sauce to add kick and a mouthful of flavor!! If you want to try their infamous ""frickled pickles"" they are excellent and more! Last week I had a ""Carter Burger"" with mozarella cheese. lettuce, pickles and a special tarter sauce, Perfect!! Good move on Genny's Diner part to remian open througout this recession, they should be around for a long while... Pros: Flavorful Food Cons: Parking and a little pricey for food more

Nasty 7/9/2008

I haven't been to Genny's in a while and was surpised to find how downhill it had gone. We arrived well before lunch time thinking we could make a quick lunch and get out. It was 15 minutes before the waitress took our order and then another 40 minutes before we got our food. \r Another surprise was the price for the Frickled Pickles, $8.95. We were told before we ordered that the size of the order had increased and that it was a meal in itself. However, when they arrived it was a very small order. Looks like the owner is trying to make up for his bad investment. When we complained we received a standard answer of ""Sorry, I thought the order was bigger"". \r After complaining about the wait for our food, another sarcastic jwaitress stated that she would just box it up and we could take it with us. \r The restaurant itself is dirty and I don't think they've cleaned their fish tank in a couple of years. Also, would it put them out to much for them to put some place mats down so that our elbows don't stick to the table?\r \r Pros: None\r Cons: Slow service, dirty restaurant, sarcastic waitress, overpriced. Cons: slow service, dirty, rude staff, overpriced more

best food for your money 6/12/2008

i was dining in the resturant when me and my husband were eating with our 4 year old when i large group of people where coming in to eat. about 10. the gentlemam that ended up coming to the bar was ranting about refills for his party. He spoke with 3 employees and they told him since the party entered at diffent times maybe there was confusion. They apologized and told him that the server would get it straight he kept on the server began to cry (THAT POOR GIRL) you could smell the alcohol on him then he starts cursing about terrible service and he wanted this girl fired . After this man kept cussing and the staff knew this man was erratic my hisband stood and said this was a family resturant and our daughter is here could he please watch his mouth then a female he was with said to us ""b$%# you need to shut up"", Another server told the man he could A- sit and eat his meal (with another server since there was an altercation) or he could go somewhere else but if he kept going she would have to call the police and be escorted out. a few the other people that were with him was apologizing to the server, another girl left crying and said sorry for her friends behavior. The man ended up outside yelling at yet another employee before leaving when the police were going to be called. personally i think that that owner was more patiant than I and was giving the guy a break by not calling the police and having him arrested for disorderly conduct. The food that we had was delicious. My server was polite and i got alot of food for my money. When we go out and eat there is no reason why you should treat somone that is waiting on you like the way this guy treated this poor girl. I just wanted to hug her and tell her she did not deserve to get treated like that. So i would recommend Genny's resturant to all of my famliy and i always do. I see why Genny's is famous for thier food i was delicious and the staff handled a difficult situation very well in my opinion Pros: the way a terrible situation was handled by abusive customers Cons: a irrate man that had to be there when my family was eating. Not the diners fault more

I wish I could give a 'zero' star! 6/8/2008

Yesterday my family & I visited Genny's in a group of 12. We had reservations & were seated in a semi-private room at about 6:15, ordering appetizers at 6:45 & entrees by 7. The restaurant was moderately busy but not packed so we looked forward to a nice evening... hmph. *No AC in this room- just a dodgy portable unit on the floor & ceiling fans overhead. It got warmer & everyone started saying their eyes were burning- we noticed a smoky haze coming from the kitchen, which opens directly into this room. We got ONE round of drink refills but most of us had empty glasses for quite a while. The frickled pickle chips weren't like I remembered- these were so thin & fried to such a crisp I could hardly taste the pickle at all. *8:15- no food; no updates. We all ordered burgers but even the two twin platters shouldn't take 1.5 hours. At 8:30 some food came out & we sat with cooling plates, waiting for everyone to be served. Our server apparently made no note of who ordered what so we had to sort it out ourselves. There were several mistakes with requested side items & EVERYTHING from the fryer tasted like stale smoke. *My husband went to lodge a complaint. He was talking to someone when our server walked behind him & said ""If you have a problem with the service you can f_ing leave."" Another server got involved & a cook came out- HE was very polite but the other server kept interrupting, so my husband & the cook went outside to talk. *We decided to just box up what food had come & leave. At the door the OWNER calls to the cook outside, saying ""I need you in here, forget about that pr_k""... about my husband! More words were exchanged & the other server came out a side door saying ""You haven't left yet?!""- we're getting into our cars & she's coming out to start more trouble with us! She was still yelling obscenities & threats as I drove away. *An awful experience anywhere, but especially at a family restaurant like Genny's- it certainly isn't the place it used to be. Pros: None, anymore. Cons: RUDE service, including the owner! more

Genny's - Bloody Awful 6/6/2008

This is the first time I have ever posted a review, but my experience at Genny's has prompted me to share. We came for lunch. We were greeted and given menus by someone who brought their toddler to work with them (think ""Sweet Home Alabama""- Reese Witherspoon ""You have a baby...in a bar""). The drinks were flat, the sweet tea was awful. The frickled pickle was not very good. After waiting 40 minutes and still not been served our lunch, we heard a plate break in the kitchen. A lady who works in the kitchen starts yelling at someone ""Stop It! Don't"" then tells a waitress ""Call the police, their fighting!"" We left right then. We were in the car pulling out of the parking lot, we had to stop because a young guy with in an apron ran behind our vehicle. We started to go again but had to stop quickly because another guy in an apron, a HUGE, BLEEDING cut at the eyebrow and a another cut towards the back of his head holding a SHOVEL came around chasing the first guy. It reminded me of Jack Nicholson in ""The Shining"" The guy with the shovel must have realized he wasn't going to catch up with the other guy so he went back in the MAIN entrance with his bleeding wound and shovel. So if there were customers who were unaware of what was going on, they weren't now. This was my FIRST and LAST visit to Genny's. The food and service was not good enough to overshadow their staff trying to bludgeon each other to death with a shovel over lunch. I guess that is why they have only a ""C"" rating Pros: Can't think of any Cons: Bleeding staff members with shovels is a HUGE con for me more

Disgusting, expensive, stomach ache city 2/4/2008

The frickle pickles were good, but not $8.95 good. For my family of three to eat that one appetizer, two burgers and a grilled cheese with drinks it cost us: $42 bucks (and a major stomach ache from the grease later). For that price, we could have dined at a place that didn't make me want to take a shower immediately afterward. Slow service, gross atmosphere (sludgy fish tanks, sticky floors), and not worth the price at all. Louisville staple or not, go to Ollie's Trolley for a truly fantastic burger. Pros: The pickles and burgers were pretty good Cons: Yucky atmosphere, Way too $$$ for what it is more

Health code violations galore 6/6/2006

I have visited diners in many states, therefore knew that they were not known for their cleanliness or attention to health codes; however, Genny's was absolutely awful. The bathroom was right near the entrance to the kitchen, and the smell of feces permeated the hot and stuffy dining room. Three of the four of us who went there that day wanted to leave. We settled for appetizers (not impressed) and tried to avoid not touching the sticky table. There were grimy fish tanks in the dining room that had probably not been cleaned in years. I can recognize that it's a staple in Louisville, however I will never return. You can find other locally owned burger places that are just as good. Many swear by Genny's, but I would rather go somewhere where I could have peace of mind that their food was safe to eat. more

TERRIFIC FOOD HERE 12/27/2005

Frickled Pickles are great! Hamburgers out of this world ..... I love it here Pros: Awesome more

This Place CANNOT Be Beat!! 6/11/2005

Two words: Frickled Pickles! While it's kind of an out of the way 'dive' of a location, the food is SPECTACULAR. Try it, you won't be sorry! Pros: Fried Pickles, Great Food, Huge Burgers Cons: Old Location more

Sit Anywhere You Like!!! 8/3/2004

Bring your appetite!!! The BEST Cheeseburger... Second to NONE!!! Thanks Frank and keep those pickles coming!!! Remember to...""Sit Anywhere You Like!!!"" Pros: Inexpensive more

There is no better in Louisville 6/10/2004

My co-workers took me to Genny's years ago. Nobody makes a better burger in Louisville, and I would dare say any other city I have ever been to. They have the best Frickled Pickles as well! If you want the best burger around you can't beat Genny's. more

Awesome! 5/7/2004

When we lived in Louisville, we fell in love with Genny's! We saw the giant green pickle and said we have to stop. The Frickled Pickled Chips are the best, the burgers aren't too bad either. We now live in NY and I have tried to make those pickled chips, but they don't come close to the original! Greatly miss Genny's. Oh yeah, love all the fish! Pros: great atmosphere, Good value Cons: , cash only more

A Legend 7/2/2003

I now live two states away and travel frequently. In all my travels, Genny's Sweet Daddy Platter is beyond comparison. A true legendary meal that is beyond description. All burgers everywhere have never reached the bar that was set by Genny's in 1988, when I first ate there. I live in perpetual burger disappointment since then and have...gasp...resorted to eating chicken!!! Pros: massive, gluttonous, perfect Cons: hard to find more
