Fantastic Experiance all around! 6/17/2008

\r The experience was fabulous from the moment we entered to the time we left. We sat out on the deck which was just perfect for a warm night. Everyone ordered different items from the menu and ended up sharing each dinner because everything tasted superb. A hidden treasure in Lake Oswego!!\r more

Excellent Meal 5/11/2008

We took our mom here for Mother's Day. I was really impressed with the service and food. I had Halibut in a wonderful sauce. The fish was cooked to perfection! Several others ordered the Filet, Lamb and Veal. All were equally happy with their choices. The server recommended some great wine and was very attentive to our needs. This is a great little find in Lake Oswego. Check them out sometime! Pros: Food, Service, Ambience more

Disgruntled Chef? 4/18/2008

Dont be fooled by the review below. The last review was obviously written by someone who knows a little too much info about the on goings of Genia's Restaurant (possibly a disgruntled employee???). I've had the pleasure of eating at the restaurant since it opened and have only good things to say about the owner. It's sad to see people stooping to this level. Shame on you! Pros: Great Atmosphere, Food, Service more

Owners blew out 4/18/2008

Word on the street is that the owner lost control when a server dropped a pitcher and fired everyone, accused them of everything but murder and hired back the profanity screaming chef. I'm not going back!\r One of the clients that was in the place at the time told me it was the worst she had ever seen from an owner. I also heard that the chef had to work to clean that place up and make changes to kitchen and restaurant area, it was a toxic breeding ground, call the health board.\r more

What does decor have to do with it? 3/15/2008

We ate at Genia's several weeks ago. I have eaten there prior to the current chef so obviously the previous review was written by a friend of the last chef that screamed obscenities while we dined. We loved the trout and the steak, however, I'd have preferred a little more ""french"" to the sauces than broth and we so enjoy looking for fabulous desserts which they do not have in abundance. The chef came out of the kitchen and talked to the patrons which everyone enjoyed and she was really interested in what they'd like to see on the menu. The wines were perfectly pared and the presentation very nice. We are looking forward to the veranda opening up to offer a light and airy atmosphere and the chef bringing fresh summer foods to the table Pros: The food, wines and chef Cons: fairly dark colors, servers more

Avoid this train wreck 3/8/2008

Let me first start off by saying that I liked the previous decor due it's romantic ambiance and cozy feel. The new design is ok, but seems to be a bit colder and impersonal. I do not understand the reason as to why it was changed. I recently read on oregonlive that the new chef is a recently bailed out corporate chef of the now defunct Hayden Enterprises Inc. The fish I had was swimming in an off tasting broth, it honestly tasted like it was going bad. The service was sub par and the place was completely empty (how can you guarantee a fresh product). I do not understand how this restaurant stays in buisness. The last three reviews are obviously the same person with similar literary styles and at best acquaintances of the management. I give this restaurant less than a year before it shuts down. I have been a faithful customer here for the last year and can tell you that I will not be returning. There is good food to be found in Lake Oswego, it is certainly not found at Genia's however. Cons: Food more

Fabulous dining experience! 3/8/2008

Chef Amy does a great job: dishes that are delicious, not overwhelming (some chefs overdo it), uses fresh, high quality ingredients, and I am STILL dreaming about her huckleberry dessert! I had a wonderful black cod that was perfectly prepared in a tomato based broth: so flavorful, yet light, with a few clams and a margueza sausage. YUM! My husband had short ribs and the bone easily slid right out, cleanly! I tasted it and it was wonderful! I love the attention to detail (even the bathroom had a great hand lotion!) from the food to the atmosphere. The dining rooms are intimate and elegant, and the service was excellent. We are foodies and this is one of our new favorite restaurants. Amy really knows what she is doing in the kitchen, and she also takes the time to make you feel so welcome. I can't wait to go back; we'll be bringing friends! Give this place a try. more

Wow. The best duck I have ever had!!! 3/7/2008

Chef Amy is the real deal. Great food, presentation, and a welcoming friendly attitude. How refreshing!!! Only a few weeks in the kitchen at Genia's and she has created what is sure to be a new favorite for the Portland restaurant fan. I had the Red Orange Duck. The breast was prepared a perfect medium rare as ordered. The leg quarter was moist, crispy, and not at all oily. The ambiance is comfortably elegant. We had the perfect evening with friends. As a former restaurant owner I get excited to see superb food service artfully crafted into a thing of beauty. I can't wait to go back! Pros: Food, service, great value Cons: Probably not the best place for young children more

A five star secret! Genias is a 3/7/2008

Chef Amy Jermain hits a home run with her Starters including the Trout Salad with Latkes and Farmer's Fresh Greens. We just thought we were experiencing a bit of culinary heaven but were taken to a new plateau when I put the first bite of Duck in my mouth. Oh my gosh! The best duck breast cooked medium rare. Perfect.. The Buffalo Short Ribs fell off the bone in their rich and savory sauce. Dessert was absolutely over the top. Pistachio Brittle for those who are a little full, the Chocolate Covered Date filled with fromage a must try and a special Huckleberry delight. This two year old restaurant is a Foodies dream come true. A must try. Amazing prices and fabulous wine list. Allie, our server is one of a kind frequently checking on us and made us feel welcomed.. Wonderful service. Unbelievably priced menu. A MUST TRY. I am a Chef and previous restaurant owner who is always looking for that great new place for my taste buds to dance and I have found my dance floor at Genias in Lake Oswego! Pros: Great Ambience, warm and friendly. Incredible flavors and presentation. more

Very good, but not 5 star 2/24/2008

I've eaten at Genia twice before and twice after they've found their new chef. The food has taken a remarkable turn for the better since the change. We dined on Valentine's Day. I think the restaurant is understaffed for high volume occasions. The waiter forgot about us, and didn't acknowledge or apologize. The food was definitely a step down from our first experience. The chef has an interesting style ,presenting several of her dishes in a light broth, such as the ravioli and the fish dishes. She varied the ingredients, from first to second visit, though the result did not transcend itself. I definitely enjoy the food, but I'll not return on a holiday. Pros: Creative and tasty, without being overwhelming Cons: A bit Inconsistent, though few restaurants do well with a crowd more

Great New Years Eve Experience 1/2/2008

We had New Years Eve dinner at Genia's in Lake Oswego. The service and ambiance were wonderful. It featured a pre-set holiday menu. Our party of 4 requested special vegitarian entrees after we got there, and we were delighted with the accommodating response to our short notice. We enjoyed and highly recommend this restaurant for their excellent food and their willingness to please the customer. Pros: Great ambiance and customer service. Cons: None. more

A new star in Lake Oswego is born 9/5/2007

Classy, comfortable and simply wonderful. We had been there once before when it was Amadeus and was not impressed with either the food or the service. What a difference!! The service was spectacular, and the food was superb. I had the Veal and my husband had the Halibut, the sauces on both were extraordinary. Please do yourselves a favor and visit Genia's. We frequent other restaurants in the area and honestly have to say that Genia's looks to be the next big thing in Lake Oswego. We will be back......soon!! Pros: The food, service and atmosphere Cons: Absolutely nothing more

If this is French, I'll eat my chapeau 7/19/2007

I recently had a business trip to the charming village of Lake Oswego, a bit south of Portland, ORE. I always try to find French cuisine on my travels and used CitySearch to find this place. I'm not sure if this is a CitySearch issue or the restaurant's, but there is absolutely no way this place could ever be called French. Where are the pastries? Where are the crepes? The food was OK, not spectacular, but certainly not French! I also see in this description it says ""kid friendly,"" and maybe I'm an over-protective Mom, but I would never bring my kids to this place--they'd take one look at the menu and start complaining about nothing to eat. Kind of disappointed and not recommended for any French food afficianado.\r \r By the way, to the previous rave reviewer, you might want to check your spelling of ""hors d'oeuvres."" Maybe French in Oregon is something rare. :) Cons: French? Mais non! more

New Favorite Restaurant in Lake Oswego! 6/16/2007

Wow! We just went to Genia's last night for dinner and what an experience! We were a little early and were seated immediately. We were then welcomed by the chef who gave us a horderve. The drinks were perfect for my picky martini drinking husband and the caprese was a delight for the mouth and eyes. The main course was amazing the steak literally melted in our mouths. Amazing. The hostess ended it with a complementary drink. What an experience. We will be going back and bringing our friends! Pros: Great Service! more

A real disappointment and extremely overpriced 6/11/2007

We were so excited to try this place when a friend raved about the live music. Our first disappointment: they discontinued live music. We stayed anyway, and had a passable dinner (me pork, my husband veal) that we nonetheless felt was extremely overpriced--over $60, not including wine (which was similarly high). The food wasn't bad, but for this much money, we expected something really special. Something that turned my admittedly delicate stomach--the wait staff cleared a table close to us and wiped away the spilled food on the cloth tablecloth, then re-set the table. I would think for a restaurant charging this much they would at least put out fresh tablecloths for each new customer. It made me look at our tablecloth with a little hesitation. The ambience of this place is also a little strange--the patio was spacious, but dilapidated. My attorney husband immediately noticed a gaping hole in the decking and just clucked (I think he saw dollar signs, LOL), plus there was occasional thumping disco music played over the stereo (luckily we weren't close to any speakers). The place was virtually empty and I don't think it will be around much longer. The owner seemed overly solicitious, perhaps because she had so few customers. Pros: Good potential Cons: Too much money for nothing special more

Veal Picatta 6/11/2007

We had dinner this past weekend at this little gem of a restaurant tucked upstairs in a lovely historical building in downtown Lake Oswego. We ate veal and tenderloin. I'ts been a long time since I've been able to find a good Veal Picatta. Genia's veal is delicious. The chef serves it with thin pasta and sauteed spinach covered in delicious pan sauce and capers! The tenderloin was also delicious. Our waiter was very wine savvy and friendly. We finished our meals with complimentary dessert wine from Germany. It was truly a fine evening. \r \r Pros: Veal Picatta & Service more

A Great Night 6/3/2007

We recently had a great evening at Genia's in Lake Oswego. I had a delicious pork dish with plantains, coconut milk, chorizo, and red peppers, very Cuban The pork was cooked to perfection. The wait staff was professional and the chef went out of his way to make us feel at home. Between courses he brought us a refreshing strawberry tarragon soup and for dessert he gave us a complimentary coconut ginger flan. We sat outside on a spacious patio on a beautiful evening, it was truly romantic. I've eaten in what are considered some of Portland's best restaurants and I think Genia's menu is one of Portland's most eclectic. The music was also eclectic. We had a great night and cant wait to go back. Pros: Eclectic / Fusion of Flavors, Friendly Service, Cool Music Cons: I didnt know about this place until now more

""We don't want vegetarians"" 5/31/2007

I don't know what editor here reviewed this place, but they have absolutely no vegetarian food, as we just discovered. We came after looking at the menu and asked the person standing out front if something could be made up without meat, who then got the chef who told me (and this is verbatim), ""We don't want vegetarians here."" I was stunned, as was my wife. I asked to speak to the owner and was informed that she wasn't there and (again a direct quote) ""What are you going to do about it?"" We left--that's what we did about it. Can't believe the attitude we encountered--we'll never be back and we will certainly tell everyone we know about this. more

Worst...experience...ever 5/30/2007

Well, I took the advice of the others here and had quite possibly the worst dining experience of my life. First of all, the ""chef"" ((I use the term loosely) is literally working behind a curtain hung up by the front entrance, and he is not the quietest, profanity-free person I've ever listened to. Second, what is it with the owner's bizarre husband lurking in the entry glaring at everyone like they're intruding on his personal space. Creepy and very weird. The food was hideous--sorry. I've eaten all over the world--this is *not* continental cuisine, it is a completely unappetizing pastiche of disparate styles that this idiot swearing ""chef"" must have culled from the 3 or 4 cookbooks he managed to read. Our meat was undercooked. When we asked to have it redone, this man came out and argued with us. I truly can not believe this place is still in business. Oh, yes, the scowling obviously unhappy waiter didn't help matters either. Like eating at the Twilight Zone, except I think the food would be better there. Pros: At least we didn't die of botulism Cons: Horrible food, weird vibe from owners, just plain bad more

change of venue, quality , cuisine 5/24/2007

1 year ago, after trying Genia's a few times, we wrote a ""recommended review"". However, the past 2 times, Genia's has not been able to meet prior expectations. It's unfortunate, as we really try to support the mom and pop restaurants and the owner is one of the most gracious, kindest people in the restaurant business we've come across. The food is mediocre and over priced. They have such a small menu and the wine list has also suffered (small and out of many bottles and over priced poorly selected wines). We haven't been back since prior to the rennovations or the new chef, but our last visits told us this place is really hurting. I think if they reconstructed their menu to encompass fresh menu items at a reasonable price, they would have something. But when they are asking top dollar with mediocre food, it's difficult to choose to go to Genia's when there are so many other places in the same price range that offer a more diverse, and frankly, better tasting cuisine. Not to mention they are no longer passport members, which always made dining there a bit more affordable. more
