The Stimulus Package II 3/9/2009

Fort Lauderdale Opa is an amazing place for having a party similar to my Big Fat Greek Wedding. It is an absolute delightfully orchestrated chaos where 250 people join you and your group in celebrating whatever it is you're celebrating. 35 of us had our rehearslal dinner this past Saturday and danced on the tables as the servers were throwing napkins in the air, the belly dancer doing her thing, and the owners making sure everything was perfect. The most amazing thing was their traditional fire dance in the middle of their floor with a dozen people taking a knee and surrounding the dancers and rythmically hitting their plates just before everyone started breaking them in a festive frenzy. Unbelievable ! The food is undoubtedly the most delicious and authentic Greek food we ever had. Go there. Pros: Your Group is never too small for a huge party - cause everyone joins in ! Cons: If you are scared to have fun, or dance on the tables, or of loud music. more

How to defame an establishment with total with impunity. 3/3/2009

I truly wish that review commentaries are first checked for accuracy before some xenophobes are allowed to rate ethnic restaurants like Taverna Opa in Fort Lauderdale. Pros: Celebrating in Greece without having to travel ! Cons: Loud Music, Throwing napkins in the air, plate breaking, ... more

bad food, dirty place 6/22/2008

We went to this place on a weekday and it was a ghost town. we were only one of 2 tables occupied at this place. There's metal tables and chairs, dirty floors, and get ready to sweat and get eaten alive by the mosquitos. We were dying in the heat!! there's no air conditioning and the fans do nothing to cool the place off. It was extremely uncomfortable there. To make the situation worse I got bit by a mysterious insect on my foot and after a day my foot swelled up to the point that I couldn't wear my shoes. The food was super oily and very expensive..not worth the price. We had ordered this cheese thing as an appetizer and it was oozing in an inch of oil. The waiter had brought us some bread for our appetizer but when we got our bill we saw that they had charged us for the bread!!! The side item was green beans but they had the nerve to use CANNED BEANS....I couldn't believe it...they couldn't even steam a couple of green beans themselves....it was disgusting and mushy..what a bunch of cheapos. The lamb (or so they said) was gross. I could swear it was beef because it was very tough and didn't have the flavor that lamb usually has. The rice on the second entree was undercooked and equally drenched in oil. I think they are trying to make up for the flavor with the extra oil they put in all the foods. It doesn't help! The whole time we were there only one more group of people came in. By the way there is No entertainment as they claim. There was not even any music playing. Just adding to the lameness of the place. When the people in the other table complained about no entertainment or belly dancer. The owner guy was not friendly at all but that wouldn't even have mattered if at least the food was not so utterly disgusting. Hope this info saves you guys out there from spending a bunch of money and being totally disappointed in this place like we were. We ended up spending over 50 dollar, not including tip, and left there hungry and sweaty. Cons: expensive, dirty, no airconditioning, no entertainment, bad food, extra charges such as for bread more

The place to be! 4/18/2007

Let me just say that this place is amazing! The staff is friendly and efficient, the atmosphere casual and inviting, and the food is just to die for! The bread tasted like it had just been baked and the waiter actually mashed the chickpeas and spices into hummus right in front of our table! It was the best hummus I have ever had...it had just the right amount of garlic and spices and I don't even like hummus when I buy it in the store! The Greek salad was unbelievably fresh and the dressing they use had to have been made in house cause I have never had anything like it. For my entree I had lamb and Greek lemon potatoes which I highly recommend to anyone who visits. If you have never had lamb before this is the place to try it because you will not be disappointed. It was tender and delicious, I couldn't believe I was able to finish the entire entree, but I couldn't stop once I started...it was just too good! Check this place out, it is fabulous!!! Pros: Service, ambience, food, entertainment Cons: nothing! more

Ruined Birthday Gathering 12/10/2006

My husaband, myself, and some friends went to the Ft.Lauderdale location of Taverna Opa. We called in the same day for 25 people. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived we were down to just under 15 people. The host sat us anyway. Later we were confronted by the idiot manager mentioned in previous remarks. He yelled at us basically stating that were going to get charged on the card used for reserving for all 25 people. We explained that we never were asked for a card when we reserved. He continued to confront us basically humiliating us in front of very close neighboring tables. He then cut our table down to 10 leaving five of our guests to squeeze around us. We then received a plate of moldy pita bread to which the manager claimed was first stained by spinach (no spinach around) and then claimed that the oregano used in the baking process melted (oregano melts?!?!?). All in all avoid this place like the plague. Go to their Hollywood location. Never had a problem there. The food is always great and the staff is warm, courteous, and an absolute blast. Cons: nasty manager and food more

worst resturaunt ever 10/9/2006

Worst resturaunt I have been to in a long time. Went with my husband to enjoy dinner-what a mistake! Not only did we have to wait for a table when the resturaunt was half empty, we had to argue in what section we could sit at for fifteen minutes with owner named mike-what an idiot! Ordered roasted lamb, which tasted like it was a week old. The drunken waiter that served us made overtly sexual comments in front of my husband! He's lucky to still have a head. Go to any Greek resturaunt but Opa Fort Lauderdale. more

They should be shut down 2/23/2006

After waiting in the rain and then having the owner give our table away to larger parties, we finally were seated only to have to move three times because we were put under the rain filled awning with other large parties. When we went to leave, the owner not only did not care that we were leaving but created a scene by screaming at us and saying he would never serve people like us. Run from this place as fast as you can. more

Don't chance it for any occasion 12/3/2005

We tried to celebrate a birthday party here. What a disaster! Imagine a Greek restaurant that cannot cook lamb properly. It came out either overcooked or raw. The potatoes were cold on every dish. What made matters worse was the ""could'nt care a less"" attitude of the owner/manager (joke). This is a franchize disaster waiting to happen.... When a manager walks away from the table because he cannot handle the situation it gives you some idea of why we will never return. Cons: poor management, poor food more
