Best

Lush decor, attentive service & interior Mexican cuisine are worth the hefty price tag on Fonda's menu. Brunch here is a don't-miss.

This used to be my favorite restaurant, but they are slipping. Wine by the glass is an expensive JOKE. I've had bigger portions at free tastings. Last night they were out of ou...

Best real Mexican food. 3/21/2008

Well this place blew me away. It is a weird spot in Austin to have such an amazing restaurant.. I was completely suprised as to how gorgeous it was inside with all the beautiful Spanish/Mexican art and decor. Pros: Food, parking, service, decor, art Cons: Get's busy..but that means people love it right? more

Oh my ... 1/12/2008

If I could give this restaurant 4.5 stars, I would. The most notable thing about FSM is the decor ... it is very unique, interior Mexico authentic and romantic with a capital R. The food is positively some of the best Mexican food I have ever had. FSM has a full and pleasantly unusual menu. Their flour tortillas are so f/cking good - I don't even like flour tortillas, but I ate every single one they brought me. The recommended wine was amazing. Pros: Very, very good food Cons: Both you and your date should bring a form of payment more

Authentic Mexican Cuisine?No Tex-Mex Here 11/4/2007

I feel that many don?t realize the difference between Tex-Mex and Authentic Mexican cuisine, thus resulting in some unfavorable reviews concerning the food. If you?re looking for Tex-Mex you?re not going to be satisfied with your experience at Fonda San Miguel. However, if you?re looking to taste and enjoy the authentic flavors of Mexico, this Austin favorite is where you should go. I had friends in from Dallas and everything about our dining experience was fabulous. From the beautiful interior, superior service and quality cuisine, my friends and I were greatly impressed. This is a place that every Austinite should introduce to their out-of-town family and friends. Pros: Superior Service, Ambience, Yummy Cocktails and Complimentary Valet more

Great food and ambience 9/27/2007

We went to Fonda San Miguel for a celebratory dinner on a weekend night. We were impressed by the wonderful decor of the restaurant as soon as we walked in. We had reservations so, we were immediately seated. Our server promptly served water and took our drink orders. Server was back within 10 minutes with drinks and took the rest of our order. We had tamales for appetizers, for main course I had enchiladas de mole and my husband had chile relleno. All appetizers and entrees were really good. Then we had tres leches cake for dessert, which was wonderful. It was our first time trying the cake so, I am not sure whether the cake is better than other restaurants. We spent almost 100 dollars on dinner and felt that it was well worth the experience. Pros: Food and ambiance more

Don't bother. 6/27/2007

This place is beautiful when you walk in. That is about the only good thing I can say about it. I'm so confused by the other reviews. Maybe if you get past the attitude laden gatekeepers you will have a decent experience, but it's not worth the $300 you'll end up dropping by the end of the evening. We had a reservation for four knowing that one of our friends would be meeting us later in the meal. We were thinking that we would get drinks and appetizers and order dinner when he arrived. We weren't allowed to be seated until he was there even though we had a reservation. When we explained he wasn't meeting us until later we were told if we were seated without him he would be seated at a different table and that we wouldn't receive as good of service if we sat down as a party of three??? Great way to run a restaurant. The place wasn't even that busy, I went to the bathroom when we were waiting and saw several tables available. So we sat in the virtually empty waiting area where we were told we could order drinks and appetizers but it took a server forty minutes to bring us menus/take orders and that was after I chased him down. We were finally seated and then dined on overpriced food with mediocre service. We suggested the place so it was so embarassing! Pros: Ambience Cons: Everything else more

Am I the only one who thinks its outrageously overpriced? 6/6/2007

Look, the food is good, the atmosphere is nice, and the service is excellent. But, I am Hispanic and have eaten in Mexican restaurants all over Texas, Mexico, and the Southwest, and I have to say there is no way a restaurant can justify charging over $20.00 for a plate of enchiladas. I will pay money for food, but when you cross the $20.00 mark for a plate, you better get a cut of beef, fish, or something more amazing and complex than 2 stuffed flour tortillas and rice and beans. Pros: Great service, atmosphere, the food is good Cons: Not just overpriced, but kick in the groin overpriced more

I Crave It! 2/3/2007

Ignore all negative comments! Yes it can be more expensive than a burger joint or your average Chili's restaurant. The food is prompt, the service excellent, the food is divine and so are the drinks! The shredded duck enchiladas are worth the money. Sometimes people forget you get what you pay for. It has a very nice atmosphere, and it is truly one of my favorite restaurants. Go in with an open mind and be blown away! more

Overrated-Unless You've Never Left Texas 1/31/2007

The food is good, the atmosphere is locked in the 70's What passes for the ""Best"" here is really nothing more than well prepared dishes. They do have very good mole' and fish dishes. Just don't be surprised when the decor is lacking. A note, the lighting here a night is very low. Ok if you don't really want anyone to see you. Pros: Some Good Dishes Cons: Ambience, Service and Attitude more

The Best Mexican Restaurant In America 1/5/2007

As one who has been all over Mexico, and who is hispanic, I can honestly say this is the best Mexican restaurant I've EVER been to...anywhere.....period. Simply amazing Pros: Where to start? How about the best mexican restaurant in the nation? more

Excellent Food! 1/4/2007

Excellent food and excellent service. I had heard a lot of good things about the food, but didn't realize just how good it was until I ate there! Wow...fantastic! Highly reccomened! more

Great upscale mexican food 11/2/2006

This is one of the nicer mexican restaraunts I've ever been to. The food is good and so is the service. The atmosphere is quite nice. One of the bartenders, Tom, makes an excellent Mojito. Pros: Gret ambience, valet parking, good food Cons: Expensive for mexican more

Not all that great! 9/10/2006

My boyfriend & I went there from Houston and to my surprise (we had heard so many good things) the food was decent. I will NOT be going back. Our bill was $85.00. For 2 people and 2 sprites. Oh I forgot to mention that it was a buffet. The atmosphere was good, service was OK, food was OK, but it wasn't worth what we paid. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: service, buffet style more

Horrible service and medicocre food 9/8/2006

I was really looking forward to having dinner at Fonda San Miguel and what a disappointment! Our waiter was very rude and the service was some of the worst I have ever received. My friend just wanted to leave the experience was so unpleasant! The food was mediocre - I have definitely had much better at holes in the walls! To my great surprise, I found dinner at Fonda San Miguel to be a waste of my time and money. Pros: Nice ambience Cons: Horribly rude and inefficient service, mediocre food more

Best Sunday Brunch in Town 9/5/2006

No canned tex-mex here. This is the only restaurant in town where I've found truly authentic made-from-scratch mole, and here you can find several different varieties of it at their weekend brunch, as well as melt-in-your-mouth homemade tortillas and amazing salads. A great place for real interior mexican cuisine and the surroundings are beautiful-great patio, bar. Note: The Sunday brunch menu seems to offer a wider variety of dishes than the dinner menu. Pros: off-beat location means there is always parking available, professional servers with excellent knowledge of food and wine Cons: pricey (with respect to mexican food) but worth every penny more

Artistic and Lovely 8/27/2006

This place has sold me. I crave to go back! Apparently I went here as a child but that was decades ago! My boyfriend just took me here this past weekend and I fell in love. I fell in love with the atmosphere, the artwork, the fast service, great drinks, and fabulous food! Thinking of their shredded duck enchiladas just makes my mouth water! You cannot leave without trying one of their unique and delicious margaritas! It is somewhat pricey but worth every penny in my book. This is my new favorite Mexican restaurant. Pros: Ambience, Service, Food more

Best Interior Mexican, Great Customer Service 6/26/2006

Delicious food, great atomosphere. Wonderful wait staff! Definately a treat. And try not to skip dessert. The Tres Leche and Crepes de Cajeta are worth the trip alone:) Pros: Ambiance, Service more

Long wait - ""Fast"" food 3/5/2006

After reading excellent reviews we had high expectations. We arrived to a packed restaurant and were told an hour wait. The bar area is beautiful and comfortable. However....service was odd to say the least - not friendly and overall very abrupt. We waited forever for a waiter, who had to come back twice to ask us what we wanted. Margaritas are good but small. Finally we were seated in main dining area. Again, the ambiance is spectacular but we found everything else to be below our expectations. The waiter was aloof and distracted. We ordered rellenos and ancho chile and much to our surprise, they arrived within 2 minutes ...a little disconcerning! (how long had they been sitting under a lamp?? - the side of cold rice & beans clearly indicated this). The food was mediocre at best and the prices, outrageous - does not live up to the hype. Pros: Ambience, Bar area more

User review by tikibaby 11/7/2005

By far one of my favorite restaurants in the world. My boyfriend and I went on a casual reccomendation and were blown away by this very unique place. The food is beyond reproach and the service is fabulous without being too stuffy. We ask for Connie's section every time. She's awesome! They also serve the best mojito I have ever had and I am very picky! If you can't afford a whole meal, just drop by for the amazing atmosphere and savor the best cocktails in Austin. Pros: food, atmosphere, service Cons: pricey, location more

It was just ok - VERY OVERRATED 11/7/2005

My husband and I went to Austin for the weekend (from Fort Worth) and visited this restaurant because of the great reviews and good word of mouth. We found it to be overpriced and the food was just ok. The ambience is beautiful, and the margaritas were great, but the food was nothing to write home about. Ridiculously overpriced, and the service was just not all that great. I'm sure we could have gotten better food and better service for half the price. To us, this was more of a great place for a large group, not so much of a romantic place. I am glad we made a reservation because it was packed! Pros: margaritas, fun atmosphere, beautiful site Cons: service(lack thereof), "hot sauce", prices more

FAB!! 4/29/2005

Fonda is the best place to get drinks with friends! The cocktail area is beautiful and the drinks are great! The Ancho pepper is by far the best item on the menu!! The service here is just as good as the food!!!! Patrick was the best server that anyone in our group has ever had! They need more like him!!! more
