Best

My husband and I consider ourselves to be foodies and are very selective about restaurant dining. We were blown away. I had the pecan crusted catfish (which I only tried because...

Worst

Servings are small, especially the appetizers. There is barely enough for two. Don't order the calamari if you expect a nice portion of little squid. Main dishes are interesting,...

Horrible Service!!!!! 2/18/2007

Food is good! I had the pork chop, it was very interesting and quite good, my wife had the trout, and it was under cooked but still good. Wine list was different and very food friendly there was a server or wine stuwerd that helped us out with our wine selection and if we were to be served by him, I think the evening would have been saved! Service is Horrible!!! The male server that we had I think was new but I have been to so many restaurants that I know someone that should be taking care of other peoples evening, and someone who should at most be a server assistant! At the most. There was a manager or owner I really don't know what he was, but he was running around trying to help our server get a clue, it never happened. Over all they need a lot of work in the customer service area. Sorry, but if you are wanting a relaxed night more

I love this place! 2/2/2007

The first time I went to Firefly, I had heard about it from a coworker who said the food was most excellent. It was a saturday night in August and we were seated promptly. We weren't sure what to expect, but everything was just great. Top notch. The red Sangria was most delightful, and the appetizers were amazing. It seems to be typically American to think that unless your meal consists of the world's biggest plate of food, it's not good. Small portions are great because you can order more than one course, and not be completely stuffed. Firefly executes this theory perfectly. The second time I went was on Christmas Eve and again, the food was devine. The service was great, the food was great, and Ii always love the atmosphere so I never have any complaints. Word to the wise though, don't show up if you're starving and expect it to be quick. It's worth it though, that's for sure.\r If you aren't from South Pas, it might be a little difficult to find. Pros: ambience, portion size, service, wine selection more

Consistently Fabulous!! 1/18/2007

I have been enjoying Firefly Bistro for a few years now. Every time I go, be it with friends or family, I am warmly greeted, seated promptly and receive excellent service. The ambiance is very pretty and romantic though the temperature does fluctuate depending upon where you sit due to the tent/patio heating combination. I have been very impressed with several of their servers who are able to thoroughly describe each dish, suggest complimentary wines and even tell you where the fish is caught. Their cocktails are made with soju (rice wine) and are all very, very tasty. Each appetizer, entree and dessert I've tasted I have enjoyed. Recently I was with a large party dining there and everyone is still talking about how amazingly delicious their meals were. My only suggestion to them would be to offer more vegetarian, poultry or fish dishes. This is a great place to go for a special occaision and reservations are easy to make. Definetely Reccomended! Pros: Delicious food, great ambiance, good service more

First timers 11/14/2006

New to South Pasadena I was glad my wife and I stumbled across firefly. Friendly service, nice bar + good beer menu. Our shrimp salad was just ok. Lacking in the shrimp department. We also shared the stuffed trout and the NY with roasted potato's. We loved both dishes and cleaned our plates. Next time we will save room for dessert. Will be back and going to tell our new friends about it. more

Nice setting but food does not live up to the hype 10/6/2006

So when we got there it was very beautiful and romantic with out door seating. It was almost enchanting with it being outside with gorgeous vines and plants outside...kinda like the secret garden and the hanging tea lights. It was very slow, especially for a friday night. There was only one other couple besides us and one other guy at the bar. We had called in prior to arriving to make a reservation and specifically asked for the seating in the front canopy and when we got there they didnt have a clue. Seemed a little disorganized. We got the brussels sprouts as an appetizer, the steak and the salmon as the dish. Everything came out burned. I could only taste the carbon from it being so charred. Not to mention I left hungry. They give you like a teaspoon worth of food...ok ok maybe Im exaggerating..they give you a table spoon..there, that is more like it. Not to mention very expensive. Be prepared to pay $2.50 for a glass of soda, $30.00 for the steak and $25.00 for the salmon. The waitress was nice and prompt and seated us quickly but its not worth the $$$. more

Great ambience and food 9/16/2006

The food, ambience, and service are top notch. They offer a tapas menu on Thursday but unfortunately, it doesn't mean it's happy hour prices. Pros: Ambience, service, food Cons: No happy hour more

Friendly atmosphere, amazing deserts 7/17/2006

After a recent visit I was impressed with the helpful waitstaff and the food. The desserts, in particular, are terrific. I've had the grapefruit tart and (more recently) the panna cotta--both of which were delicious. more

Good summer dinning! 7/2/2006

\r I recently took my Husband, his brother and sister in-law to Firefly for a surprise birthday dinner. Not only did we have the best chicken and lamb that we've had in a very long time, there was a great selection of wines to choose from. The host / manager seemed lost and the bus boys were lacking. The atmosphere was very pleasant. The waitress was kind enough to bring out a candle in my husbands chocolate cake but unfortunately the cake was very disappointing and dry. We had enjoyed our appetizers and main course but found ourselves unimpressed with the finale. \r We had a pleasant experience overall and will return to your establishment on another occasion. more

very pretty place. great desserts 6/27/2006

i've been to Firerfly bistro quite a few times and always had a good time though the service can be slow and sometimes the servers seem disorganized. one thing i never miss there is dessert, it's always way better than you expect. last time i went i had poundcake, which sounds boring, but it was covered in strawberries and other things and had vanilla whipped creme and it was delicious. I'm not a real dessert person, but this is a place i make an exception. Pros: pretty dining room, desserts Cons: a little hard to find the first time more

Great food, sometimes service is lacking 6/19/2006

I have had nothing but wonderful experiences dining at Firefly. I've been here for dinner maybe 5 times over the past year. I have never had a single item of food that I could not completely rave about. Their salmon is amazing and they always have a really delicious, creative homemade ravioli dish on the menu as well. Yes, their menu is lacking a bit for vegetarians, but as a vegetarian who sometimes consumes fish, I've always found something great to try each time. Their desserts are out of this world and their wine list is exceptional. They also do a homemade white sangria which is simply lovely. The ambience is beautiful - dining in essentially the outdoors. If I had any complaints about this place, it would be through what some of my dining companions have experienced. Mainly, the problems are with the service - which seems rather amateur and carefree at times. It can be difficult to get water refills sometimes, and other times, it's not a problem at all. I've had two friends who have ordered their ribs (despite my warnings against them) and were not at all impressed with them. The service is usually quite slow - and dining here is not a quick experience. But that's not really that unusual for LA. The servers have always been quite friendly and knowledgeable about the food, but sometimes they seem to have their heads somewhere else. They often don't seem to be the brightest individuals in the world. It can be difficult to get their attention or to get them to come back and check on you frequently enough. But, all but one time that I've eaten here, the owner has personally come around to our table to talk to us - and that goes a long way towards creating goodwill toward the restaurant. Since the service issue doesn't really bother me, I find this a great place for special occasion, fun dining. Their menu is short, and they do virtually everything on it well (although the ribs are not so great, apparently!) Pros: creative menu, desserts, wine list Cons: service is sometimes lacking, slow more

Terrible, salty food 6/12/2006

The food was overly salted, the portions were small, the salmon was undercooked and had to be sent back, the ribs were tasteless and the waitress although being informed of a birthday, forgot the birthday dessert and simply shrugged her shoulders after presenting the bill. ""Oh I wrote it down special"" was her quote as she walked away. This occurred on June 10, 2006 at 8 p.m. Restaurant was half empty. Four persons, 180 dollars later and we will never go back. Check out the new French place down the block, Bistro De la Gare. We had our birthday dessert and were treated great. It turned the evening around. Life is too short for expensive, bad meals. We are really not that picky but Firefly was plain awful. more
