We go to Fearington House about every other year and each time it is as exceptional as before. Our recent visit had everything: A unique menu with the food excellently prepared,...

Worst

I am from NYC and have eaten at many great restaurants and I expected the Fearrington Restaurant to live up to my standards and the hype surrounding it. I was very disappointed a...

been there 3/31/2003

Lovely setting, great service, but when service person has to explain what is on your plate, something's wrong. Everything was in stacks, so had to delicately separate to get different tastes. Cost was exorbitant. Only go if someone else is paying the tab. more

Not as Good as Four Square 3/20/2003

My fiance and I went to the Fearrington House to celebrate a birthday a few weeks back. The food was well prepared, but no better than several other places around town (less the presentation which was very nice). The service can only be described as ""lots of people, little help"". Recommendations were useless and with all those people you'd think we would have gotten more than one water refill and one stop to see how we were doing over the 1 hour period. For 1/2 the price you can get close to the same food quality and better atmosphere and service at Four Square. Pros: Presentation Cons: Bad Service, Very Costly more

Quality food but over rated. Better values at many area restaurants. Somewhat pretentious. Pros: atmosphere Cons: over priced more

Poetic Cuisine! 1/27/2003

For a rare night out my husband and I ventured to Fearrington Restaurant and enjoyed an extrordinary culinary event. To begin with the menu reads like Faulkner, counldn't put it down I actually kept it throughout the entire dinner. Clean, balanced subtle flavors throughout the six courses that ranged from delicate Lobster Bisque to sublime Foie Gras three ways. Heaven! Caviar service with a playful but focused twist. Lots of seafood offerings, our waiter said the chef was raised on the NC coast. Desserts were delicate, a perfect ending to a perfect dinner. The service was by far the best we have recieved in the Triangle. Pros: romantic, menu offerings, fireplace more

C'est decevant! 1/18/2003

The maze-like arrangement of bar and gathering, dining and rest rooms was outdone by the confusing encyclopedic menu. Meandering through voluminous descriptions of courses became a futile exercise in determining which flavors might contribute to our expectations of a fine dining experience. Our attempts were unsuccessful. Having delighted in numerous cordon bleu refinements and country French simplicities elsewhere, we were stunned by strong conflicting flavors that overwhelmed each course and provided no gustatory continuity. The soup (not a menu choice), however, was excellent; the duck, moist and tender. Disappointingly, the Kobe beef (at great additional expense) tasted of blue cheese which not only distracted from a supposedly extraordinary filet but also concealed its accompanying Italian truffles. Why bother? Service and presentation were superb but I get that at home. The food, I cannot. Overall, a major culinary disappointment. (Stomach cramps the following morning may have also influenced my opinion.) more

Best hotel in the area! 12/28/2002

Most luxurious room I have ever stayed in, including the Bellagio and the Four Seasons in NY. We stayed in the suite with living room, fireplace, bedroom, and large marble bath. The bath had heated floors, separate jacuzzi tub, and awesome shower. The food was excellent, and walking around the grounds is beautiful. Don't forget to pet the ""oreo"" cows! more

Elegant and Luxurious 10/1/2002

We had a wedding reception at Fearrington, and they made everything perfect for us. The staff were delightful and professional, and we had everything we wanted almost before we even asked. The different areas are all charming, and we could not have been more pleased with how our reception turned out. Their accomodations are luxurious and elegant. They helped us make our wedding reception a dream come true. Fearrington is a real gem. more

Overhyped 9/8/2002

After hearing so many good things about this restaurant, I decided to take my boyfriend there for his birthday dinner. The service, I have to admit, was excellent...and the appetizers were superb. I wasn't too fond of the cold soup (tasted like applesauce) and I was realllly disappointed with my filet. A restaurant like this should not mess up on the filet. It was tough, cold, and overcooked. Needless to say, I do not recommend the filet to anyone...unless you are planning to go to 'fin's' on Lead Mine road. Pros: good service, romantic atmosphere more

Relais Gourmand 9/6/2002

Since 1988, Fearrington House has received the prestigious Relais & Chateaux designation marking it as one of only 425 hotels and restaurants in the world to be recognized by this international luxury alliance. Unfortunately, Fearrington House has not had the same consistency over the years that one would expect from similar honorees like The Inn at Little Washington (outside of Washington, DC). The food, while typically excellent in preparation, seems mired in traditional approaches and lacks the fresh creativity that many other restaurants of similar caliber exhibit. Presentation is solid, if not a bit aloof. That said, the Fearrington House still remains an excellent special ocassion destination. Hopefully continued honors will not let the restaurant become complacent. Pros: Farm Setting, Professional Service Cons: Staid Cuisine, Aloof Attitude more

Just Perfect!!! 7/18/2002

We were visiting colleges nearby with our rising senior son. Happened to be our 25th anniversary and had heard good things. The evening was wonderful! Romantic. Our server, Emma, was very helpful in recommending choices - especially for our teenage son, who is a picky eater. Even he was pleased with the great food and even tried some different foods. Sommelier picked a great wine and even replaced with nicer one at the same price when the original selection wasn't available. Just a perfect evening. more

One word...gourmet 7/18/2002

My husband and I went to Fearrington Restaurant to celebrate our 4th anniversary. It was one of the most enjoyable and delectable meals I have ever eaten. The ambiance was very romantic and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to spend a romantic night with someone special. Pros: Great location Cons: Expensive more

The Most Wonderful! 7/10/2002

Fearrington is a magical place to dine, walk, or just go....the restaurant is superb, the service, the best. I fell in love at Fearrington House, named by purebred Himalayan cat, which was a gift from the man I fell in love with, after Fearrington House. The registered name for the cat was Fearrington's Magical Charm...which is exactly what you will find there....go, enjoy and appreciate your life. more

Best Romantic Dinner 7/10/2002

Fearrington offers an amazing experience. For gods sake, if I'm correct, it's the only 5 star restaurant in the state. I'm a Citysearch regular, and I've actually found Fearrington on CS before. The best romantic setting in town. Alittle pricey, but you pay for what you get. more
